NIKON NIKKOR 28mm 1: 3.5 ('K' or 'Nikon New')

In short

NIKON NIKKOR 28mm 1: 3.5 is an old wide-angle lens for Nikon film cameras. In our time, it is interesting only for a very high-quality case and a low price. At one time it was a wonderful prime, but now F / 3.5 is considered too small for such a lens.

This lens belongs to the so-called 'K' or 'Nikon New' version, which preceded the Nikon AI lenses. This series was produced from 1975 to 1977. All previous models, for example, NIKON NIKKOR-H Auto 1: 3.5 f = 28mmwere built on the basis of the same 6/6 optical scheme, which is also used by the hero from this review.

It's important: NIKON NIKKOR 28mm 1: 3.5 'K'-series is mechanically similar to conventional Nikon AI lenses and easy to install on any modern digital SLR cameras Nikon.

F / 3.5 is 2/3 steps darker than F / 2.8 in many subsequent Nikon 28 / 2.8 lens models (K, AI, AI-S, E, AF, AF D). It is believed that for a wide-angle lens, high aperture It’s not always important, because, for example, in landscape or architectural photography, most often used are very covered diaphragms.

Appearance

The design of NIKON NIKKOR 28mm 1: 3.5 is classic, typical for that era. A striking external feature of the lens is a chrome-plated decorative ring between the aperture control ring and the DOF. Another memorable element is the multi-colored indication of marks for the depth of field scale and aperture values.

Approximately in the same style all Nikon 28 / 3.5 / 2.8 / 2.0 lenses were released right up to the autofocus version Nikon AF Nikkor 28mm 1: 2.8 (MKI, 1986).

Assembly, control, focus

Lens body made very high quality. Metal is used for all parts of the body. Focus ring wide, rubberized, comfortable, rotates approximately 180 degrees. The focus ring moves smoothly.

During focusing, the front of the body frame with the threads for the filters extends forward, but doesn't spin. The focus ring shifts slightly toward the front lens during focusing.

The diaphragm device consists of only 7 petals.

On the case there is a focus distance scale, a depth of field scale (in the form of colored stripes) and a label for working in the infrared spectrum.

How to use Nikon manual lenses (such as this one without CPU and with manual focus) on any modern Nikon interchangeable lens digital camera described in the section 'manual optics'.

Image quality and sample photos

The lens does not like backlight, it has a noticeable amount of aberration on the open aperture, but in general it shows good sharpness in the center of the frame already with F / 3.5. Edges and corners are pulled to a good level with F / 5.6. There is noticeable vignetting on the open diaphragm and a slight distortion. But the lens does not have any serious problems.

Results

Nowadays, almost any inexpensive universal full-frame zoom lens at its wide end (24, 28, 35 mm) uses F / 3.5. And from a fixed lens is expected a higher aperturewhich NIKON NIKKOR 28mm 1: 3.5 cannot boast of. At the same time, this lens is very pleasant to use and produces good image quality, especially when you consider that it is at least 45 years old.

Nobody drowns for an old man, almost the same age as mine.

  • B. R. P.

Beautiful color in the photo. Once I almost bought such a lens.

  • Evgeniy

about the same 28mm 2.8 ai, nice little thing

  • twm

    A little offtopic
    > Sony α3500
seems like an ideal (super-budget) option for manual windows. How is she doing with focus picking - accurate? My picking on a fullframe from Sony (A7 is the first) left an impression that it was not without problems: it “smears” - unlike Fuji and the old Nexes.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Pick-up is like pick-up, similar to other budget Sony E APS-Cs of the same era.

    • Alexey

this is a cache, even a larger offtopic, but on kenon, with ML support, it is almost easier to shoot on manual glasses than on a BZK.

      • Arkady Shapoval

Specifically, if we take this manual 28 / 3.5 K, AI, then Nikon in this case has the correct EXIF and automatic iris control. What neither Canon with ML, nor BZK is present or much more difficult.

        • Alexey

Of course, it is impossible to obtain automatic control of the Nikcor lens aperture on anything other than the Nikon camera. but my answer was a bit to another question.

        • Alexey

(thoughtfully) how many I rent on a variety of manual glasses, there have never been problems from the inability to automatically control the diaphragm. despite the fact that I’m not always shooting in the open. I just set the required hole based on the conditions and / or plot, I focus and shoot. metering on kenon is not mistaken. and, focusing on the hole being removed, I avoid problems with the focus shift.

  • twm

And the gallery from Natalia - I enjoyed it: the summer is very felt.
The photos themselves report enough glass.

  • Koba

This is what some older lenses can be respected for. What is the focus of picking, there is a marking of 5 meters on the distance scale, so we set the aperture to 5,6 and everything from 2,41 meters to infinity falls into the focus zone, that is, we get hyperfocal. Measure 2,5 meters by eye - sheer trifles. That is, in most cases, autofocus or focus peaking is not needed. But there are the same 28mm lenses where the scale ends at 2 meters, so you need to find those who did it, and kill them even in old age.

  • Vyacheslav

    Does anyone know if there is a big difference between Nikkor-H 28 / 3.5 NonAi and multi-coated Nikkor-HC 28 / 3.5 NonAi?

  • Sergei Mikhailovich

I have the latest, AI version with a new optical design. What can I say, even for today the lens is excellent. Works in all weather conditions, producing consistently high-quality results. I don’t take portraits or groups of people with it. For me this is a purely landscape lens. In conjunction with Nikon-F and Nikon-FE, it works wonders. I recommend it to everyone who has not found a faster version. By the way, the chrome ring is not decorative at all. It is specially designed for the photographer's fingers to grip when changing lenses. Very useful in a hurry. Do not forget that Nippon Kogaku produced only expensive professional equipment until 1980. If we compare the design of Carl Zeiss T* lenses for Contax cameras manufactured by Yashica (Kiocera), we can say that Nikon is far ahead in terms of convenience. Papa Zeiss, no offense, plz...

  • Sergei Mikhailovich

Kyocera. Autosubstitution replaced with stupidity. It's like shooting a landscape or portrait with a digital Nikon. In order not to fight his stupidity, I put it in manual mode. My new D780 is too intrusive compared to F4, F100. Spirit of time…
