7Artisans 35 / 1.2

In short

7Artisans 35 / 1.2 is a modern manual high-aperture prime lens for cropped mirrorless cameras. One of the most compact, fast and inexpensive similar fixtures for cameras with an APS-C sensor.

It is interesting for its low price, high-quality assembly, interesting bokeh and maximum relative aperture of 1: 1.2. Of the obvious shortcomings - a soft picture at F / 1.2 and a few other small features.

7Artisans 35 / 1.2

7Artisans 35 / 1.2

Assembly

It's important: 7Artisans 35 / 1.2 is available in black and silver. The review shows a lens with a black body color. The silver color of the case can be useful to those users who have silver or white / gray cameras.

The lens came to the review in very good condition. The front cover is metal, without latches. The lid is just tightly attached on the lens body. On the inside, the lid has fabric seal. The lid does not spontaneously spontaneously, is pleasant to use, but it can still be lost if the lens is not handled carefully.

In general, the lens is well assembled. 7Artisans 35 / 1.2 has bayonet mount metal and the lens case itself is completely made of metal, anodized aluminum is used.

The weight of the 7Artisans 35 / 1.2 lens is only 150 grams. In the hands of the lens it feels like a solid, albeit tiny, thing.

The diameter of the filters is 43 mm, a full-frame lens uses the same diameter 7Artisans 35 / 2. 7Artisans does not try to optimize its lenses for one or two filter diameters and almost every lens uses its own size, which is sometimes not very popular.

The design is nice, and the lens itself is very compact, ideal for small Sony cameras with an APS-C sensor.

Diaphragm consists of 9 petals and forms a hole in the shape of a regular hexagon, while in the photos in the blur zone pretty round discs of blur appear at any aperture value. The diaphragm can only be controlled manually using a special ring. The aperture ring rotates smoothly, no clicks and fixed values, you can set any intermediate value in the range of F / 1.2-F / 16, which is very useful during movie shooting.

It's important: unlike other lenses, where the aperture ring rotates with clicks, and the transition between any pairs of aperture numbers has the same step, the step between pairs of 7Artisans 35 / 1.2 numbers is always different. It is reduced from F / 1.2 to F / 16. This makes it difficult to conveniently and quickly set values from F / 4 to F / 16. And for the F / 11 mark, there was no place on the scale at all (the distance between F / 8 and F / 16 is very small). In this case, F / 11 is present on the IPIG scale.

7Artisans 35 / 1.2

7Artisans 35 / 1.2

Focusing

The focus ring is narrow, metal, ribbed. The ring rotates on 135 degrees (3/8 of a full turn). Focusing is smooth and enjoyable.

During focusing, the trunk of the lens runs forward but does not spin. During focusing, the entire lens block moves.

On the ring there is a scale with a focusing distance in meters and feet and a depth of field scale. The minimum focusing distance is only 35 centimeters, and the maximum zoom ratio is small, approximately 1:8.

7Artisans 35 / 1.2 has a small 'Focus Breathing' effect (changes in viewing angle during focusing). During focusing towards the MDF, the viewing angle decreases.

Focus Shift (focus shift, changing focus distance due to iris)

Have a hard stop (hard infinity mechanical stop) for fast and accurate focusing in all temperature conditions

Important: focus-picking with 7Artisans 35 / 1.2 and Sony Alpha 3500 at F / 1.2 does not work well and is difficult to navigate. It is best to use instant zoom in the selected focus area for precise focusing.

It's important: Initially, the lens comes with a special mount that mounts on the focus ring and makes manual focusing easier. In the review, I visited the lens without this holder.

7Artisans 35 / 1.2

7Artisans 35 / 1.2

Image quality

7Artisans 35 / 1.2 is pretty moody on open diaphragms. At F / 1.2, it shows poor sharpness.

It's important: the lens has enough curved field of sharpness and non-linear drop in sharpness to the edges and corners of the frame... A curved field of sharpness means that if the center of the image is sharp, then the corners are not, and vice versa. A non-linear drop in sharpness means that sharpness from the center to the corners of the image may drop in places and rise again in places. Everyone's favorite Soviet Helios-40-2 1.5/85. The superposition of these two effects is clearly noticeable even when working with focus picking while focusing on a homogeneous plane (for example, a brick wall). During focusing, you can see how focus picking highlights the center part, then the edges and corners of the image. You can even notice how focus picking creates concentric circles during focusing that converge or diverge. The curvature of the field is almost completely leveled by the depth of field expansion during iris and at values after F / 5.6 it is no longer noticeable.

Sharpness

  1. the f / 1.2 lens is weak, the image is very soft even in the center of the frame with low contrast
  2. the situation changes significantly with the aperture covering up to F / 2.0, where the lens shows satisfactory sharpness in the center of the frame
  3. there is a noticeable drop in sharpness to the edges and corners of the frame (taking into account the curvature of the field)
  4. excellent center resolution occurs after f / 2.8
  5. resolution at the edges of the frame returns to normal on covered apertures after F / 4 (taking into account the curvature of the field)

Distortion

  1. barrel-shaped distortion
  2. the distortion is uneven, in the region of the corners the image is distorted more strongly

Vignetting

  1. noticeable vignetting observed most strongly at f / 1.2
  2. vignetting decreases with focus towards MDF. Most noticeable when focusing on infinity
  3. vignetting almost disappears at f / 5.6
  4. vignetting easily fixable in the editor

Aberration

  1. a large number of spherical aberrations (at F / 1.2, the lens even looks a bit like monocle)
  2. spherical aberrations are well reduced due to aperture
  3. are present and chromatic aberrationbut they are small

Rest

  1. on covered diaphragms it will not work to achieve the beautiful effect of a 14-ray star
  2. from bright light sources you can get a lot of glare, while they can be of enormous size
  3. bokeh interesting, nervous

It's important: On the Sony a3500, most likely on some others, the camera’s sensor suffers greatly from the color shift (colorshift). The edges of the image are painted in pink / pink-purple. The color shift does not depend on the focusing distance or aperture value. This is not a lens flaw, but a camera lens flaw.

Important: at the time of the creation of this review, there was no 7Artisans 35 / 1.2 profile for popular RAW converters. You can create a profile yourself or wait for its release.

bonus

A bit of photographic fun. What is the review on Radozhiva without examples on TOP Nikon D40. Below is a photo on 7Artisans 35 / 1.2 and Nikon D40... Sony E mirrorless lenses fit easily into the Nikon F SLR mount and are pressed / locked there with the bayonet blades. The only thing is that the lens itself does not snap into place. Outwardly, it seems that the camera has a native lens. In this state, due to the difference in focal lengths, you can only shoot macro. But how fun it is! Macro at 35mm f / 1.2!

My experience

7Artisans 35 / 1.2 is a godsend lens. Convenient focal length, prohibitive aperture, high-quality assembly, very compact sizes, low weight, bokehy bokeh and low price. Take and take off! For a long time I have not seen a similar set on a single lens.

I'd love the best work on F / 1.2, but with such a price tag it is almost impossible. F / 1.2 is more suitable for some creative experiments. Anyway, 7Artisans 35 / 1.2 is more a creative lens than a boring standard staffer.

I liked the lens, the 'magic' of F / 1.2 still makes itself felt. The 7Artisans 35 / 1.2 is fun to shoot, its optical flaws sometimes cease to worry at all. 7Artisans 35 / 1.2 somewhat reminds me of Soviet Jupiter-8 2/50 и Jupiter-3 1.5/50.

Video review

Results

The 7Artisans 35 / 1.2 is a very interesting lens. Can be a really creative tool for crop mirrorless camera owners. Has a number of strengths and weaknesses.

10 main advantages

  1. low price tag (total about 120 dollars)
  2. maximum aperture F / 1.2 (very high aperture)
  3. convenient focal length for working with cameras with APS-C sensor
  4. good build quality: the lens body is completely made of metal, including with a metal bayonet mount and a metal front cover. Optional holder included
  5. smooth focus ring, 135 degree ring travel
  6. very compact sizes, there is a depth of field scale and focusing distances
  7. 9 aperture blades, which always give a fairly rounded hole, the aperture rotates smoothly, without intermediate values
  8. good sharpness in the center of the frame after f / 2 and excellent on more covered apertures
  9. interesting bokeh
  10. great creativity

10 main disadvantages

  1. very soft picture at f / 1.2, including in the center of the frame. Perceptible curvature of the field of sharpness, non-linear drop in sharpness from the center to the edge
  2. no CPU pins to form the correct EXIF
  3. rare thread for 43 mm filter
  4. a threaded (non-bayonet) hood should be used
  5. front cover without latches, easy to lose
  6. a small step at the aperture ring between the F / 4-F / 16 values. The diaphragm ring is easy to accidentally hook and knock down the set value
  7. there is no lens profile for popular RAW converters, the lens is not 'hardwired' into modern cameras
  8. in backlight or side light, you can easily get the corresponding artifacts (example)
  9. strong spherical aberrations on open diaphragms, palpable chromatic aberration
  10. focus picking does not work well on F / 1.2, there is a very strong color shift (most likely these problems are associated exclusively with some cameras, for example, the Sony a3500, for which test shots were taken)

UPDATED: a review of the second version was released on Radozhiv - 7Artisans II 35mm 1: 1.2.

The alternating curvilinear field of sharpness is associated precisely with attempts to correct it. In this sense, this lens is not unique.

    Outwardly a bit like I-50-2

About high aperture. I recently bought a speed booster adapter (focal reducer) 0,71x for installing lenses with a Nikon mount on a Micro 4/3 camera. Allows reducing exposure by 1EV. Thus, if we take Nikkor 50mm 1: 1.4, then with the adapter we get a 35.5mm 1: 1.0 lens.

    • Arkady Shapoval

but only the adapter, like any converter, eats away part of the image quality

      • Pavel Gorbunov

        Adapter to adapter.
I purchased a Viltrox EF-EOS M Speedbuster 6X adapter for my Canon EOS M0,7 yesterday.
I shot test shots with Canon EF 40 / 2,8 STM pancake with and without adapter.
The difference between the images is only in reducing the focal length of the lens-adapter bundle and in reducing the exposure by 1 step.
The sharpness in the center of the picture and at the edges is visually the same as with the adapter, that without it, however, I iris the lens to 5,6-8.
Color reproduction and contrast also do not change.

        • Serg

try it open and see the fall. on a closed then what for is a booster

      • alexey_laa

It is clear that additional optics should introduce distortion into the image. Now I’m shooting more at him. I also read in the description of such adapters that they increase sharpness (or rather MTF). This could be explained so that the unsharp elements of the original image become smaller relative to the size of the new image after the adapter. While I understand it. :)

      • alexey_laa

Comments on the article were filled with comments on another topic. I'm not on purpose. :) There was an idea to write some review on your adapter. Such an adapter is interesting for crop cameras in that it uses that part of the image of a full-frame lens that is not used with conventional crop. For cameras with a crop factor of 1.5, the lens with the adapter should give the same image on the smaller sensor that gives the full frame.

      • Alexey

Arkady Shapoval, let me disagree, it all depends on the quality of the optics used in the speedbooster, it's not for nothing that the more complex the optical scheme and the more low-dispersion lenses, the better the lens. Tested on Canon EF 50mm f1.8 STM. At F1.2 aperture, wonderful photos with excellent detail within the depth of field, even a half-length portrait of two people with excellent detail, made a comparison with the Sigma 18-35 f1.8, I did not notice any particular shame except the depth of field, although the landscape is sharp at the edges at F6.3 .XNUMX

    • Pavel Gorbunov

You won't get aperture 1,0 and the corresponding blur, because the aperture value on the lens does not physically change.
Only the light transmission of the lens-adapter bundle will increase by 1 stop, which will be accepted by the camera's automation as an increase in aperture.
Example: in the adapter-lens bundle (Canon EF 40 / 2,8 STM), the camera processor sets the aperture value on the display to 2,0, although the aperture value is set to 2,8 on the lens itself.

      • Rodion

In the sense of? And what does the number of apertures on the lens have to do with it, if the speed booster changes its physical scheme - makes the focus smaller while maintaining the absolute aperture? It really will be 35/1, the only trouble is that distortions of higher orders will climb and eat up the quality.

        • Pavel Gorbunov

What does “distortion of higher orders” mean?

Standard aberrations - coma, astigmatism, spherical - are geometrically represented as third-order polynomials, as I recall. Beam distortion is described by a formula of this kind and makes the greatest contribution to the drop in image quality and its deviation from the “ideal” one. Higher-order aberrations are described, respectively, by degrees greater than the third.

            • Pavel Gorbunov

In general terms, I understood, thanks.

        • Roman

It turns out that the modern shirik is some kind of long-focus medium-sized lens (conventionally), to which a speed booster was attached, or even two, because of which it requires such disproportionately large front elements?

          • Rodion

I'm not sure about the widths - traditionally it is more of a telephoto lens turned upside down with an enlarged former rear group to provide a large angle of view (retrofocusing).
But here 7partisan 35/2 from the previous review is essentially a tessar with a speed booster, which is funny enough. A similar technique was used when calculating a 50 / 0.7 Zeiss planar - there is a massive rear lens group that plays the role of a collecting system.

            • Alexey

Here is a great article on this subject. http://www.marcocavina.com/omaggio_a_kubrick.htm

            • Pavel Gorbunov

“I’m not sure about the widths - traditionally it is rather a telephoto lens turned upside down with an enlarged former rear group to provide a large field of view angle (retro-focus scheme).”

              It?

              • Rodion

This is just not it - Jupiter-12 is the analogue of Biogon, which was obtained from Sonnar. In other words, this is an extreme version of the development of the 50/2 type standard Sonnar lens.
                “It” is Mir-1, for example.

  • Konstantin

Well, this ... I liked Yongnuo 50 / 1.8 for Sonya from the previous review better. This one is just a toy for a couple of days.

  • B. R. P.

It seemed strange bokeh in some pictures. It is also strange that they are not equipped with front covers with a clip.

    • Rodion

Indeed, for so many years we have not seen anything like it. No one is turning to this scheme nowadays.

  • Koba

Yes, in China this lens is sold for $ 130, as it turned out, for Canon M, Nikon mounts (no mistake - Nikon, although which mount is not indicated), Sony, Micro 4/3, Fujifilm. A very interesting lens, it has all the drawbacks, but this is what can be wrapped in interesting photographs in some cases, otherwise the world is already a little tired of completely fixed, large and expensive lenses. 35 / 1.2 and weighs only 160 grams, and with F4 it gives a sharp picture, that is, in fact we have two lenses in one, sharpness is required (usually it is required at closed apertures) - please, a fancy blur is required - for God's sake! There is no autofocus - it is for the best, it will last longer, and if it deteriorates after a few, then lose a little. Personally, I would buy such a lens and try to shoot it in the evening or even at night, somewhere in the Chinese villages (it's a pity that my FujifilmX-E2s does not have a built-in stabilizer!) ...

  • Adon

7partisans have an interesting 75mm f1.25, I want to try this one.

    • Koba

as it turned out, they really have one, but for a full-frame Leica it costs an exorbitant $ 430 ... It's amazing that this lens has very good sales in China and users gave it the maximum average statistical score. Dig deeper into the reviews and it turned out that formally it does not have special glasses, but in fact all the glasses in it are made of crystal, so it is so heavy and will probably give a picture of old watering cans or fochtlenders. It will be really interesting to test it here, but this is from the realm of fantasy ...

      • Rodion

We've already talked about "crystal"?) Crystal in a chandelier and in a dish, optical glass can only be lead in this case. But you can't get away with PbO alone - you can't have all the glasses with it) In general, the lenses in which the creators abused lead glass tend to turn damn yellow.

        • Koba

maybe, and for sure those who wrote about this did not mean that all the glasses are from that breed ... it may also well be that the large weight is simply due to large glasses and a metal frame ...

  • Jankowsky

I looked at the examples and made a conclusion for myself - it is very clear that this is an ultra-budget lens in the best Chinese traditions (a lot of aperture is almost for nothing, indistinct loose color rendition). I compared it with my masterpiece Kamlan 50 \ 1.1 Mark II - which gives a premium picture in all respects. But this 35 \ 1.2 on the open is worse even than Kamlan MK I, which have already appeared on the flea market for a penny.
In addition - I have 3 Sony E APS-C cameras including the A3500 and none of them have ever seen color shift matrices with both Camlans. Just my opinion - I could be wrong about the 7artisans brand

    • Alexey

and the color shift will not be with all the optics, but only with the widths. and retro-focus. because there, very oblique rays fall onto the matrix) with a fifty dollars it’s very hard to get.

    • Rodion

You would show masterpiece shots from your masterpiece clan, besides sunsets and geraniums on the windowsill. For sunsets, by the way, a camlan is not needed.

      • Pavel Gorbunov

Not on Kamlal yet ... 🤪

  • York

On the open - it's funny, soap, but a kind of "with a karakhter". You can even play around.

And why should they shoot at f / 8, I don't know, then AF should be taken ...

I’m wondering what these Seven Handicrafts have with serial quality?
Once played with CCTV, like all sorts of Fujians, there really are two out of ten you can’t suddenly find two identical ones in the picture (as well as in workmanship, hehe).

But the price of Fujian is a ruble per bundle, and these guerrillas somehow don't want to buy in bundles.

    • Serg

I don't understand at all why he has to close the diaphragm, the meaning is lost as such)))
and even more I do not understand when they begin to close the diaphragms of any helios, killing the character of their bikes and bringing them closer to the usual all familiar lenses.
so these lenses are good for their artistry and softness, etc. and if you need a closed diaphragm, I would better put a good glass))))

  • Michael K.

And I liked the picture. Quite moderately contrasting. Yes and artistry is present.

  • Sergei

There is a fairly detailed review and test of this subject in English.
    https://alikgriffin.com/7artisans-35mm-f1-2-review-sample-photos/

  • Alex

Interesting photos from him, especially with the Nikon D90.
Sorry, the aperture of pictures taken with Sony is not indicated.

  • Kirill

From my point of view, the hero of the review deserves all praise: it is retro in a modern design. The metal (aluminum) case with a brass mount of the bayonet mount is solid and reliable, there is no need to talk about the quality of plastic - there is no plastic.

  • Arkady Shapoval

    Posted small lens video.

  • Trueash

Arkady and other experts, there is a question - not really about this lens ... In short, in the review of some lens on this site I came across the phrase: “... this lens has a large depth of field ...” (it seems that there was a talk about some kind of GDR but never mind). Does this mean that the depth of field also depends on the optical design of the lens, or what other features besides distances and aperture? And if so, which 35 has the most depth of field compared to others, all other things being equal? I want to pick up something for shooting offhand (27 is still a bit short).

    • Arkady Shapoval

does not depend, almost the same (and the differences regarding focus-breasing are extremely small)

      • Trueash

Thank you, so the task is simplified. You can take any you like

  • Sergei

Threaded hoods from Ali have a 52 mm thread for the filter, so it's not so bad.

  • Andrei

It is a pity, Arkady, that in this review in the cards of examples you did not indicate the aperture on which the pictures were taken. Indeed, in my opinion, for the characteristics of the lens in the pictures, this is much more important than the value of shutter speed and light sensitivity.
Of course, the lens is quite interesting, although it is clear that f / 1,2 is more of a marketing feature here than a really working aperture. But with what aperture and how the lens pattern changes according to your examples, alas, it is not clear. Although, in any case, this lens is probably better than the old, even branded lenses, it is not known how many times they fell and got over, and besides, those sold on the secondary market are sometimes twice or three times more expensive than these “seven masters”.
I can imagine how much you have suffered, shooting with the open camera on the Sony A3500 - after all, despite the good matrix, the viewfinder and screen of this camera are simply awful and are only suitable for building a composition. By the way, my focus-peaking on it was also not very intelligible on the open one on many lenses - on Helios-103, Jupiter-8, Jupiter-11, Industar 69. With coverage up to 5,6, it begins to more or less highlight the contours. Even on the third model of the Nexov picking, kmk, it works better.

Among the alternative super-fast prime lenses, you cited a Neewer lens. I would like to throw my own ... well, opinion at this Chinese manufacturer))). Bought them 3! top-end flashes for the Sony E system. I was puzzled by the search for a transmitter to build a full-fledged wireless flash light kit. Faced the fact that this transmitter is not supplied to us - in the USA - yes, to us - no. (In general, many of their products have a typical lifetime for Aliexpress - today a hit, and three months later, following the link to the product - a 404 error.) Transmitter ordered and bought on ebay. The purchase came without instructions. For a long time I tried to find a support section on their website with a transmitter control circuit - alas. The site does not contain absolutely any documentation on the products that this company allegedly produces (in fact, as I later realized, clones of the same products are sold on Ali under different brands and Neewer is just one of them). In addition, from time to time the site was hacked (or maybe the TIC was increased) and, mainly on weekends, instead of the catalog of photo accessories from the monitor, there was porn. In the end, I wrote to the company, described the situation, listed the order numbers in which I bought their products, asked only to send a pdf with a description of the purpose of the trigger buttons, well, or at least give a link to download. The answer was “Dear friend (they all are“ dear friends ”), thank you for purchasing our company's products. Please look for the manual for the transmitter where you bought it ”))). Everyone decides for himself what a company is worth with such an attitude towards its customers.

    • Rodion

How do you suggest, I wonder, to indicate the aperture in the pictures, if it is not transmitted to the camera? Remember what?

      • Oleg

Write down on a piece of paper, keep a journal, such a snapshot, such a diaphragm, a signature. Not valid without a signature.

        • Rodion

Still need to be notarized, I think.

          • Andrei

Do you think a person writes a review just like you do your comment, or thinks over what he wants to say to the reader, trying to confirm what has been said 10! footage shot at different locations? I have been reading Arkady's reviews since then, when you probably did not even hold the camera in your hands, and these 7 partisans are far from the first manual lens that he reviewed. Let me tell you a secret, for the most part, all of them have aperture values “not transmitted to the camera” (horror!). And nevertheless, in most reviews, the aperture value is indicated in the picture. (You are probably right, and it was not without a notary). Moreover, if you have heard of such devices as film cameras, most of them do not save))) the parameters of the picture, but somehow the reviewers manage to specify these parameters. If we are talking about a technical review, for which most of us come to Radozhiva, then the aperture value is perhaps the most important parameter of the image, by which one can judge the quality of the lens, and it is the ISO and shutter speed that characterize the camera more, therefore, consider the attached frames without the value of the aperture and guess - "here is still 1,8, or already 2,2" - about the same as watching videos on Youtube. There, too, nothing is "transmitted to the camera"))))

            • Victor

              I will support Andrey.

Seeing the value of the aperture in use on the manuals would be quite useful.

            • Rodion

The aperture value as a whole is clearly visible in the picture, as well as in the combination of ISO + shutter speed. It is impractical to write down the aperture value for each photo - this is not a shooting, but a torment that is not worth it.
When I need to show something to readers like you, I use a special test series of images with fixed aperture values, which do not carry any artistic semantic load. However, this is not important for every lens.

              • Andrei

I don’t know what you show “to readers like me”))), but if it’s difficult for you to write down the aperture values, sorry, I’m not interested in your reviews, we have about the same number of ololo reviewers today as there are “elite wedding photographers ”. As for your ability to determine the aperture by ISO + shutter speed (I hear this for the first time, learn to live)))), can you determine whether the cats in the third row of photographs were taken at the same aperture or at different ones? The shutter speed and ISO are the same in both frames, but the lighting differs by at least two stops. And, navangyte, please, what aperture is there? Already f / 4 or still f / 2? If this is not important to you, then what are we talking about?

              • Arkady Shapoval

I will try to indicate the aperture used next time. Part of the meaning I voice in the video about this lens... I am sorry for the inconvenience caused.

              • Rodion

The cats were removed at 1.2-1.4 times, which can be seen from the nature of the field distortions. Here you don't even need to look at exposure and ISO.
There is really nothing to talk about.

              • Denis

Hello, I want to take a 35mm lens from Ali, I need * compact * and cheap, but of the highest quality, there are a lot of species, there is not a single comparative test, the prices are also different. Tell me what to choose for the highest quality picture from 35mm, for Crop Sony cameras

              • Rodion

                Try Meike 35/1.4 or 7artisans 35/1.4 II.

    • Michael

You can determine the aperture just by the shutter speed and ISO)
