Overview of the Nikon Lens Series E Zoom 70-210mm 1: 4. increase.

In short

Nikon Lens Series E Zoom 70-210mm 1: 4 is an old manual focus telephoto lens designed for Nikon film cameras. The lens uses the PUSH-PULL (trombone) design. Good at open apertures, not bad for his age. It attracts with a constant relative aperture throughout the focal length range, low cost and decent image quality. Based on this lens, a very popular autofocus was released Nikon AF Nikkor 70-210mm 1: 4.

'Nikon Lens Series E' lenses are one of Nikon's simplest lenses. These lenses went as standard cameras for Nikon entry-level film cameras (Nikon Super Compact Bodies: EM, FG, FG20). The 'E' series can be safely called the whale lenses of its time. They were designed as cheap lenses for a wide range of users. Typically, these lenses had slightly worse body and optical quality than the more advanced Nikon lenses. Nevertheless, the series 'E' is widely appreciated by many amateurs for its light weight and good image quality. None of the E Series lenses no name 'Nikkor'which refers to all 'real' lenses from Nikon. The 'E' is most likely associated with Nikon's first low-cost EM camera, for which a line of similar lenses was developed in the first place.

Nikon Lens Series E Zoom 70-210mm 1: 4

Nikon Lens Series E Zoom 70-210mm 1: 4

Appearance

Nikon Lens Series E Zoom 70-210mm 1: 4 is very similar to his older brother Nikon Lens Series E Zoom 75-150mm 1: 3.5. Lenses have the same control and look very similar to each other.

Assembly, control, focus

Lens body made very high quality. The piston ring and diaphragm are not rubberized. During focusing and changing the focal length, the rear lens of the lens remains stationary. When changing the focal length, the lens length does not change. You never think that the lens belonged to the budget line. Everything was done no worse than on other similar Nikon Nikkor lenses of that era, for example, Nikon Zoom-NIKKOR 80-200mm 1: 4.5.

One ring is responsible for focusing and changing the focal length. To change the focal length, pull or push the piston ring, to focus - rotate it. Nikon Lens Series E Zoom 70-210mm 1: 4 Uses'reversible PUSH-PULL'- the maximum focal length value is available when the piston ring is closest to the camera mount.

The Nikon Lens Series E Zoom 70-210mm 1: 4 focus ring rotates approximately 180 degrees in normal focus mode.

It's important: the lens has macro modewhich is only available at 70 mm focal length. At the 70 mm focal length position, the focus ring can rotate beyond the 1.5 meter mark, and the MDF in this state is only 56 cm. When the focus ring enters the orange zone, it becomes impossible to move the piston to change the focal length. To change the focal length, you should leave the orange zone (make the focus distance more than 1.5 meters). Given the macro mode, the focus ring travel is 270 degrees.

During focusing, the front lens rotates and extends forward. On the case there is a focus distance scale, the depth of field scale (in the form of colored stripes) and a label for working in the infrared spectrum. The lens has a hard stop (hard infinity mechanical stop) which allows you to accurately and quickly focus the lens to infinity under any external temperature conditions.

Nikon Lens Series E Zoom 70-210mm 1: 4 has a pronounced 'Focus Breathing' effect (changing the viewing angle during focusing). During focusing towards the MDF, the viewing angle decreases. Due to the fact that the focus ring is wide enough and has a large and smooth stroke, the effect of 'Focus Breathing' is almost not noticeable during focusing.

Unfortunately, the lens changes the focal length under the weight of its own piston. Effect spontaneous piston movement on the copy from the review expressed very, very strong.

How to use Nikon manual lenses (such as this one without CPU and with manual focus) on any modern Nikon interchangeable lens digital camera described in the section 'manual optics'.

Image quality

First of all, I want to note that the f / 4 aperture, in terms of sharpness, is good enough with the lens. But on cropped cameras with a high pixel density, when viewing a picture with an increase of 1 to 1, the age of the lens is still felt. But on the covered apertures in the F / 8-F / 11 area, the old Nikon Lens Series E Zoom 70-210mm 1: 4 works at the level of some modern similar lenses.

The weak point in image quality is friging (example) On covered apertures, aperture blades easily create nuts, but overall the lens has a nice bokeh.

In sunny weather, F / 4 allows you to use short excerpts at low ISO, which makes shooting comfortable, and you should not worry about blurry images due to shake. At ISO 200 and F / 4 in sunny weather excerpt It is in the region of 1/1000 seconds.

Results

Nikon Lens Series E Zoom 70-210mm 1: 4 has a convenient set of focal lengths and a constant aperture. Nowadays, it can be used as a creative lens, primarily for a portrait or various kinds of photo tasks where a short telephoto is required. The lens shows good sharpness, especially on covered apertures. The weak points in the lens are the spontaneous movement of the piston, poor resistance to flare and strong friging. Like Nikon Lens Series E Zoom 75-150mm 1: 3.5 this Nikon Lens Series E Zoom 70-210mm 1: 4 I recommend for leisurely creative shooting.

  • Vladimir

Thanks for the review. Is the optical design of the Nikkor AF 70-210mm F / 4.0 apparently different? MDF is definitely different.

    • Arkady Shapoval

The scheme is exactly the same, I mentioned it several times in the review. MDF changed, since af.

      • Vladimir

I am sorry, I usually do not look at the table, since the most important thing in the review is your opinion, Arkady, about the lens.
I have a Nikkor AF 70-210mm F / 4.0 in my collection, I bought it according to your advice, and it seems to me optically more interesting than the glass from the review.

      • koba

Optically, they are completely identical, the af version does not have a macro mode, unfortunately. I have an af version and consider it to be just a great lens, even on an open aperture. It is actually even better than many people can imagine, the bokeh is simply excellent, it isolates the object tightly, the colors are beautiful, the distortion is essentially absent, not heavy, it works fine on my camera, but there are frequent refocusings, made for centuries. This manual version costs up to $ 100, although the af version is already not so expensive, I took $ 130 in state 98.

        • Pineapple

I confirm. The AF version is beautiful. The colors are sometimes even too bright, on f4 sharp so that you can see all the smallest imperfections of the skin on the faces, you have to tinker with their removal. For telephoto is easy. I have 80-200 2.8, but you can’t take it especially. 210 soap.

          • koba

Mine does not even wash at 210 ... I myself am surprised. I already wrote somewhere that despite the fact that this is not the B version, last year I shot indoor models, about 1000 frames, all with a flash, and even on one I did not get an exposure error, after that I personally lost everyone meaning to pay attention to this function.

  • Rodion

It seems that this lens will be noticeably inferior to the Vivitar S1 70-210 / 3.5, even the one I used to be in.

    • Arkady Shapoval

The s1 is still great optics, and the Series E is the 'simplest' Nikon lens.

    • York

Well, S1 - after all, the top was at its time, and they cost money, and the picture was quite recognizable.

And this nikkor is just a good inexpensive dark zoom.

    • Igor-K

Vivitar is more interesting. Friging is smaller [except for Komine], the dermatology on the open is clearly less. But Nikon is easier and easier to implement macro. Nikon's 75-150 from the E-series is bright, though Kiron did it. I compared this lens with the AF version, AF 70-210 \ 4 draws noticeably better! I think it's due to enlightenment.

  • Basil

Series E was produced in pieces of 5 species. Photographers bypassed them, although much cheaper than Nikkorov. There was an opinion that there was some kind of plastic lens inside. Which gets cloudy over time. They were released to the pioneer EM. Optics are not so razor-like niccor, they were sold at 100 bucks was cheap, while 1.4 fifty was 550, and 1.2 650. I mean the 90s

    • Arkady Shapoval

There were 5 different focal fixes and 3 different focal zooms, as indicated in this review. In addition to EM, there were 2 more of his heirs - FG, FG20, which were also equipped with Series E. As time has shown - everything works with a bang :)

  • Maximum

I would not say that this lens is much inferior to the Vivitar Series 1 70-210 f / 3.5. I have both of these glasses, and the Nikon Series E seemed a little more correct in terms of color reproduction and generally liked it very much. But even more of these focal length lenses I liked the Canon 70-210 f / 4 with FD mount. By the way, I will sell my copy of Nikon Series E 70-210 f / 4, exactly the same as in the test of the respected Arkady, but in a slightly better condition. The hood for this lens is “HN-23”

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Thank you

  • Alex

Tell me how to attach this lens to a tripod, without a tripod there is constant blur when shooting in low light, and I also wanted to try to shoot a video. In the picture: the colors are better than those of any whale and my MS Jupiter 37A, but the back one does not hold

    • B. R. P.

Based on the design, it is unlikely to work. Put the camera on a tripod.

      • Alex

the lens is very heavy, I'm afraid the mount will break off

        • B. R. P.

Well, this one is not the heaviest yet) is unlikely to break off.
