History

Nikon Zoom-NIKKOR 35-105mm 1: 3.5-4.5 was introduced in January 1983. Originally, lenses were released for the then-new Nikon F3HP and FM2 cameras.

Is the first AI-S lens with variable maximum relative aperture, while retaining 'ears'for compatibility with older cameras. It is often found in the literature that it is AI-type, but in fact it is already made according to the specification AI-S.

A year after the announcement of Nikon Zoom-NIKKOR 35-105mm 1: 3.5-4.5, a similar more powerful one was released Nikon Zoom-NIKKOR 35-135mm 1: 3.5-4.5, and a year later, Nikon Zoom-NIKKOR 35-200mm 1: 3.5-4.5 was released.

In those days, the ranges of values on the lens were written with a tilde '~': 35~105mm 1: 3.5~4.5, and zoom lenses had a Zoom prefix: Zoom nikkor.

Based on Nikon Zoom-NIKKOR 35-105mm 1: 3.5-4.5 autofocus was released Nikon AF Nikkor 35-105mm 1: 3.5-4.5 (MKI) with the same optical design, but in a completely different package.

Today, echoes of similar lenses, such as Nikon Zoom-NIKKOR 35-105 / 35-135 / 35-200 1: 3.5-4.5, can be found only in modern Tamron 35-150 / 2.8-4.

Appearance

Appearance of Nikon Zoom-NIKKOR 35-105mm 1: 3.5-4.5 is beautiful and unusual. The appearance was greatly influenced by non-standard controls and the classic multi-colored coloring of the control marks on the old Nikon Nikkor lenses.

Assembly, control, focus

Lens body made very high quality. The piston ring has a nice grip and is made of something like a very hard rubber (but not plastic and not metal).

During focusing and changing the focal length, the rear lens of the lens is movable. When you change the focal length, the length of the lens changes.

One of the most difficult tasks during the design of the lens was to make this lens with a thread under the filter on 52 mm.

One ring is responsible for focusing and changing the focal length. To change the focal length, you should pull or push the piston ring, to focus, rotate it. Nikon Zoom-NIKKOR 35-105mm 1: 3.5-4.5 uses classic design 'PUSH-PULL'- the minimum value of the focal length is available when the piston ring is closest to the camera mount. The lens becomes maximally long in macro mode.

The Nikon Zoom-NIKKOR 35-105mm 1: 3.5-4.5 focus ring rotates approximately 90 degrees in normal focus mode. The rotation is smooth and pleasant.

It's important: the lens has macro mode. To turn it on, press the metal button near the orange arrow, which are located on additional control ring, and turn this ring in the direction of the orange arrow. In this position, the piston moves from the 50 mm focal length mark and flies slightly over the 105 mm focal length mark. In the macro mode, the focusing ring cannot rotate on the MDF, but only up to the 4 meter mark, but the distance scale does not show the real values of the focusing distance. There is a special indicator of the multiplicity of the maximum magnification with marks of 1: 5.5 and 1: 4. You can turn the macro mode on and off at any time. To turn off the macro mode, turn the additional control ring in the opposite direction, after which it will automatically snap into the inactive position.

During focusing, the front lens rotates and extends slightly forward. The design of the piston is very interesting, it consists of a part on which the scale of the focusing distances is applied and on the piston itself. During focusing, these parts move relative to each other a small distance. On the case there is a focus distance scale, the depth of field scale (in the form of colored stripes) and a label for working in the infrared spectrum (in the form of an arc).

Nikon Zoom-NIKKOR 35-105mm 1: 3.5-4.5 has a small 'Focus Breathing' effect (changing the viewing angle during focusing). During focusing towards the MDF, the viewing angle decreases. Due to the fact that the focus ring is wide enough and has a large and smooth stroke, the effect of 'Focus Breathing' is almost not noticeable during focusing.

The lens does not change the focal length under the weight of its own piston. Effect spontaneous piston movement this lens is not peculiar.

How to use Nikon manual lenses (such as this one without CPU and with manual focus) on any modern Nikon interchangeable lens digital camera described in the section 'manual optics'.

Image quality and sample photos

Nikon Zoom-NIKKOR 35-105mm 1: 3.5-4.5 creates a good picture, as for its time.

Good sharpness in the center of the frame already with open apertures. Of course, there are serious flaws, such as a strong loss of sharpness at the corners of the frame at 35 mm and F / 3.5 and strong vignetting. Separately, it is worth highlighting an unusual picture in macro mode.

Sample photos with RAW source files helped me make a photographer Natalya romanenko (instagram). Convert RAW source files with Nikon D700 the original Nikon Capture NX-D v 1.4.6 utility.

Download RAW c source photos Nikon D700 can at this link (36 files, 500 MB). Please note that the maximum aperture of F / 3.5 was indicated in the camera menu, but when you change the focal length to 105 mm, it becomes F / 4.5, therefore the aperture value in EXIF may differ from the real ones. One focal length value was also set for 105 mm.

Results

Nikon Zoom-NIKKOR 35-105mm 1: 3.5-4.5 is a quality lens of yesteryear. It is not of much interest these days, but it can serve as an inexpensive and interesting all-round full-frame lens. The main advantages are a very high-quality assembly, the presence of a macro mode, small 52 mm light filters and increased, compared to simpler brothers, aperture. Image quality can also not be called bad, special attention deserves an unusual picture in macro mode.

  • Neo

A cool three-dimensional picture on a macro, and the lens itself is well preserved

  • Nath

The lens is very cool, it conveys colors remarkably, contrast and most importantly, to get beautiful shots you need to be constantly paying attention to it, for example, when shooting a landscape it is not always possible to twist it to infinity, you can get a sharp shot, often you need to adjust sharpness and be present Here and now.

    • Andrei

      What is it ???

  • Jury

Such lenses respect the appearance and workmanship. I have a later autofocus 70-210mm f / 4-5.6D, so even it is taken much more seriously than plastic 55-200 and the like.

    • Not a bot

what's the difference how it is perceived, is it better to take it off? Is it more convenient to work with?

  • Pokemon

Interesting convex picture on a macro.
Either it seems to me, or optically it is more interesting than the autofocus Nikon AF Nikkor 35-105mm 1: 3.5-4.5 D (MKIII), which I had.

  • B. R. P.

    Wonderful color reproduction.

  • Pawel

FINALLY, I have been waiting for this review for 3 years, I even started writing it myself to send Arkady, a very cool lens. I consider it a lens with a built-in retro filter, the yellow coating of the lenses contributes to this. It is very beautiful and of high quality - a monolith. No backlash in 40 years. It can also be used as a means of self-defense). Seriously though, the lens is perfect for creativity, a novice videographer or a collection. Arkady, I will ask you to insert a couple of lines about enlightenment and reveal the topic of parfocality (there are disputes)

    • Arkady Shapoval

      He is not parfocal

  • Aries

you need to add ... the macro mode works in the range of focal values of 50-105mm, which is convenient for cropping, unlike 35-135 macro only at a focal length of 135mm

  • Maksim

Very high quality lens. In macro, I often corrected the focus with the piston; this method seemed very convenient to me. High-quality contrast picture, excellent color reproduction. I shot them on FA, F4, d700. Photo from D700

  • Maksim

    one more photo

  • Maksim

The only thing, I registered it in the camera as a 105 mm lens, and with an aperture of 4,5

    • Arkady Shapoval

I write it like that too

  • Wladimir

    - I bought this lens for myself about 7 years ago - the seller offered me this manual for about 20 dollars and then I was simply struck by the workmanship of a real Japanese lens - I bought it for the collection and was not even really going to shoot something on it, but it turned out that they you can shoot well in macro mode - they shot all kinds of flowers and other small things on Nikon D-600 and Sony HEX-5 through an adapter.

  • Andrew

The lens exists in two versions.
The most massive is the early version.
Later, small, produced with a modified optical design.

  • Sergei Mikhailovich

For me, this latest version lens works in conjunction with Nikon-FE. I really like the picture from it. Small distortion can be easily corrected in a graphics editor. With such a set, if I shoot on film, it’s not difficult to wander through forests and fields all day long. It gets to the point that when going to the forest, I leave my digital Nikon at home and take only the FE with this lens.
