Canon EOS 50D Short Review

For the provided Canon EOS 50D camera many thanks the store ProFotoSalewhere you can find many new and used photoapparts of different systems, including similar camera Canon EOS.

Canon EOS 50D with lens

Canon EOS 50D with a Canon Zoom Lens EF-S 18-55mm 1: 4-5.6 IS STM lens. increase.

The Canon EOS 50D was introduced on August 26, 2008 and was the last model in its lineup. 10D->20D / 20Da->30D->40D-50D. Subsequent model by logical number - Canon EOS 60D lost some of the functionality and became a level slightly lower than the above main line. Some of the functionality from the 50D was taken over by a higher-level camera - Canon EOS 7D. As a result, the 50D split into a line 7D->7D MarkII and ruler 60D / 60Da->70D->80D->90D.

If in short, for its time, the Canon EOS 50D was a smart advanced amateur camera with an APS-C sensor. The main properties that you should pay attention to:

  • 15 MP CMOS sensor, which was a champion in pixel density for its time. The same sensor or slightly modified / modified later used the camera Canon 500D. Original RAW with 500D and 50D are very similar. The maximum size of the created image is 4752 X 3168 pixels. RAW files use 14-bit color depth.
  • The camera works in the main range ISO 100 to 3200 with the ability to expand to a value of 12.800 (H2 value). For the extended ISO range, you should enable its use in the user settings of the camera menu. For our time, the noise level at high ISOs is not good, but the camera holds well even ISO 800 values.
  • Buffer frames fits 16 RAW or 60 JPEG L images with all additional image enhancement functions disabled. These are the functions: 'Corr. periphery lighting', 'ISO range expansion', 'Noise reduction. at long shutter speed', 'Noise reduction. at high ISO', 'Highlight priority' and 'Auto brightness correction'. When using fast CF cards, continuous high-speed shooting lasts more than 30 frames in RAW format.
  • shutter can use minimum shutter speed 1 / 8000 with, and the maximum burst speed is 6.3 fps (similar to its predecessor, 40D, which still had a slightly higher speed - 6.5 fps). Follow-up camera Canon EOS 60D lost such a rate of fire.
  • 50D uses CPU DIGIC IVon which a huge number of cameras were built. This processor first appeared in the 50D and was then used in a huge number of different models: Canon EOS-1 D Mark IV (two such processors), Canon EOS 7D (two such processors), Canon EOS 5D Mark II, Canon EOS 60D / Canon EOS 60Da, Canon EOS 500D, Canon EOS 550D, Canon EOS 600D, Canon EOS 1100D и Canon EOS 1200D.
  • Auto View Live View. This is one of the few cameras that has a Live View mode and at the same time no movie mode. Then there were wonderful times when the camera was originally designed specifically for photography (and the grass is greener!). Other similar cameras: 40D (first camera with Live View, no AF in Live View), 450D (first camera with AF in Live View), 1D Mark III, 1DS Mark III и 1000D. There was another 20Da with Live View, but with it is another story. In Live View mode, the Canon EOS 50D uses conventional focusing by contrast, there is a face detection function, and an increase in the selected area is available.
  • JVI based on a pentaprism with a magnification of 0.95 X and 95% frame coverage.
  • 35-zone SPC metering sensorwhich was used even by Canon 5D Mark II.
  • 50D inherited from 40D his 9-point phase focusing module, all of which are cruciform. The central cross-shaped point has an additional cross-shaped sensor of increased accuracy, located diagonally to the main one (the so-called X-orientation), which works only with lenses F≤2.8. The main center cross-type sensor has a special zig-zag structure that improves focus by about 2x when using a 2.8 aperture lens 40D and a 50D subsequent camera built Canon EOS 60D / 60Da. In the future, this module migrated to the younger line of Canon EOS cameras and was seen in models Canon EOS 650D и 700D. 50D has a function lens adjustments under accurate autofocus.
  • in this model the display for the first time appeared 920.000 points (640 X 480 X 3 RGB), which has become a certain norm for a huge number of subsequent models. Up to 50D, all Canon EOS cameras feature weaker displays.
  • 50D has one memory card slot Compact Flash (CF) and easily digests memory cards of almost any size. Newer models starting from 60D began to use memory cards like SD.
  • The housing basically has a metal chassis of magnesium alloy. Design and control almost like 40D.
  • Since this is an advanced amateur camera, in the middle of its menu there are many diverse functions that help in the life of the photographer.

My experience

I have long wanted to make a review on the 50D, I have been meeting with this camera since 2010, and it will be reviewed soon on one of the standard Canon lenses.

I am very sorry that the 10D <-> 50D line has been discontinued. What is the lack of a quick selection of the focus point at Canon EOS 60D. In any case, even nowadays, the 50D is a very good camera for all amateur photographers. A lot of information on the Canon EOS system can be found. here.

The 50D is the kind of camera that can be used perfectly by both amateurs and professionals. At one time she was very successful model, which was used by a huge number of photographers. Actually, I have nothing more to add, the Canon EOS 50D is the workhorse of its time.

  • Salavat

Wonderful camera! Despite the fact that I changed the system, I still respect the 50D and never sell it for any reason. I also have a 1D carcass with a matrix unique for our time, which is not eligible for sale.

  • Pokemon

    Arkady, is there any hope that there will be full reviews of 5Dmk2, 5Dmk3, 5Dmk4, 5Ds / 5DsR, 1Dsmk2, 1Dsmk3, 1Dmk4, 1Dx?

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Wait and see

  • Alexey

Very happy with the camera. I bought it for 8000 rubles for an almost new copy (+ EF-S 17-85 mm f4.0-5.6USM). Nice to use - you feel a solid and once expensive thing. Fast, accurate. It is very convenient to take pictures of children at matinees and during games.

  • witness

Waited for this review FIVE years!
    Very nice camera!
I already managed to sell it and yesterday, on April 9, 2020 I took myself a Canon 7D (already the third in a row), a worthy successor to fifty!
    All - beautiful cards!
And Arkady - Respect and Respect!

    • Maximum

And how do you like the transition from 50k to 7k, are you satisfied, can you recommend it?

      • witness

        Maxim!
Just now I noticed your question when I once again began to read an article about Canon 50D. If the information is still relevant or will be of interest to others, the transition from 50 to 7 was without problems, since these devices are the same in ergonomics.
In 7k I liked 19 points (and they are all cross) and a new battery.
        I definitely recommend it.
        Sincerely,

  • Vyacheslav

Beautiful camera with very wide functionality. It is important to add that there is an add-on for Magic Lantern firmware for it. And all the functionality thereof, including VIDEO shooting up to 1920 by 1080. Without audio, of course, there is no hardware support from the factory.
Another feature - hot pixels on the sensor with increasing sensitivity and / or exposure time - is very common on the 50D and 500D models. However, it does not bother much, but night shooting is a pain.
And so the chic case, well, it is very similar in control to the 5D MkII - they were published almost simultaneously. In practice, a huge plus is the autofocus microadjustment, for fast lenses you can't do without it. And the price is now cheap. I have been using it for 8 years.

    • Vyacheslav

It is worth adding that there were two problems that could be fixed independently.
The gum on the upper disk near the shutter button starts to scroll. A toothpick as a tool and several microdrops of superglue under the gum eliminated the defect.
And the timeless operation of the shutter button is treated by pouring some reasonable amount of alcohol into the battery compartment, pressing the button repeatedly (the button down, of course), draining the alcohol, blow-drying the hair dryer, and then a couple of weeks until the alcohol completely evaporates the button will be too sensitive. Now the norm, already 2 years. Everything is done at your own peril and risk!

      • Vio

or for 800 UAH in Kiev change the button :)))

  • York

A wonderful machine, a real hard worker - an unpretentious, tenacious, really very reliable camera.
I still have it, periodically even taking off with a half-brace.

He has a rather noisy matrix, peculiar to the canon of that time, but that's all.

Well, it’s not for nothing that alternative firmware was sculpted just for half an hour, and people still use it successfully.

  • koba

The 50D had questions about the matrix noise, like there are even more of them than in the 40D. But no matter how much I watched files from Kenon cameras (even full-frame ones), they were all shot on ISO100, apparently users know that even on ISO200 they start to make noise (my 5d3 does the same thing!), And it is very difficult to process files from them. This is one of the minuses, everything else is a plus. This camera in excellent condition in China can be bought for $ 75-80, users strongly disliked it and their prices are very low, and on the other hand, you can see a huge number of excellent shots from them, so in theory, for a very cheap price, you can get an excellent camera ...

    • Onotole

I shot it a couple of times - I categorically did not go. Even by the standards of those times, the picture quality was not particularly impressive, but by modern standards it is completely trash. And the point is not even that the matrix is noisy, the point is that the very nature of the noise is unpleasant, “digital”. It happens that the matrix makes noise at high ISOs, but the noise somehow resembles the grain of a film and does not even annoy (like in D4S, for example; maybe some other ones - I did not shoot with all cameras in the world), and so, this is at all NOT about 50D.

      • koba

I've found a new "application" for such old but quite semi-professional cameras - this is for beginners who want to study photography, drag them here and there and get their hands on, and at the same time take quite decent pictures. Also for adapting old lenses, which is somewhat difficult for Nikon. The 40D and this 50D are totally fine for this, the 40d is even better and cheaper. Where else can you get a camera like this for under $ 100 in excellent condition? There are also plenty of opportunities to shoot at home, subject, etc. Also, take them for such filming where there is no great responsibility and drive them until they die, and the cameras are tenacious, as far as I know ...

      • Vio

“Looks like a grain of film and does not even irritate” - have you lost everything with grain :)? Yak is not grain - is that rubbish? Bigger parameters for a child?

  • Vio

for completeness, it’s important to add that in the xxD line the autofocus adjustment function was not present everywhere, but in a strange way alternated:
Canon EOS 40D - no fine tuning
    Canon EOS 50D - yes
    Canon EOS 60D - No
    Canon EOS 70D - yes
    Canon EOS 80D - yes….

What is the reason for this behavior of Canon - I do not understand.

I disagree with the statement that Canon has split branches with the Canon EOS 50D. It's just that Canon EOS 7D is a new branch after all.

With noises - yes - complete crap in comparison with new cameras and especially with my Nikon D750 especially :))) - Nikon D750 at 6400 is much better than 50D at 1600 (photographed the New Year tree).

Otherwise, it has everything a photographer needs. I think to sell, and then I think to leave. I don't know myself…. Just two systems to have at the same time is not hunting

    • Arkady Shapoval

Focus adjustment is not the only criterion for dividing the line.

      • Vio

I agree, but I mentioned it SEPARATELY :) - in addition to what was said

    • Alexey

The sixty is a bit “strange” in terms of AF adjustment - yes, there is no possibility of AF adjustment by the user, but there is the possibility of saving, using the service software in the ASC, AF corrections for seven different lenses.

  • Ilyas

Workhorse. I myself had the same until I pulled out 1 lamella (it fell off)

  • Paul

I still use it! The second owner. 65k run, dropped a lot. For some time it didn’t work. Now again in the ranks of the fighters) I love her, a very convenient and cool device!

    • Hob

“I didn’t work for a while. Now again in the ranks of the fighters”

Did you earn it yourself? Or after renovation? This is not an idle question - my Konica Minolta A200 recently fell (albeit while in my bag) from a height of 2 meters. For a couple of hours I couldn’t get focus and made strange sounds when I turned it on, and then it started working as if nothing had happened (it’s not known how long). There is also a Canon 50D, I like it, but with a mileage of 62 thousand it started to show Err1 from time to time (when I set the shutter speed to less than 200/20)

  • Ruslan

I have a 50d and her older sister 40d. Very solid and reliable devices. Acquired about a year and a half ago. Now their prices have dropped indecently low. Highly recommend especially to beginners.

  • Alexander

    Good day, Arkady.
The following question arose about this camera: while reading reviews on other sites (when yours was not there yet) I came across reviews that 50d washes the picture terribly, and then I saw a studio test at all - https://prophotos.ru/reviews/13069-canon-eos-50d/4
Have you encountered anything like this while using the camera?
I just can't understand - many praise the picture, many scold it precisely because of this "soap"

  • Vadim

The Canon 40D also has reduced sRaw formats. I had it.

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Fixed

  • Basil

I bought it the day before yesterday for a child to master photography, and for one thing I played with it myself.
Of the advantages, I would put in the first place the possibility of fine adjustment of focusing to the lenses. If on the whale it is not so critical, then on the lenses 1,8-2,8 it already obscenely missed before adjusting.
The second plus is ergonomics. Taking 50D after the five in hand, all the main buttons are in their places. Yes, the auxiliary ones on the left ran down, but not critically. Moreover, once I had a 40D, and she also has them under the display. But picking up a 60D or a three-digit series, it becomes not at all obvious where to press ...
Of the minuses - the picture is always soft / soapy. Tried all my lenses. None of them have ringing sharpness, although there are no questions about sharpness on the top five, especially if you hide behind. Those. on 50D, the image seems to be quite sharp, but I want more. Especially I found pictures from 40D - it was sharper. If you twist the sharpness during processing, then it turns out tolerably. Although if you do not know what is sharper, then everything is fine))).
I also noticed that the amount of noise according to ISO is distributed in the same wavy manner as on 5D2. And I would say that 50D ISO 640, perhaps, has a ceiling where you can pull a little more out of the rav. At 800, even without pulling up the exposure, you already have to turn the noise reduction.

In general, the 50D is an interesting animal. Actually, if you buy some 17-50 / 2,8 for him, then the child will be generally fine. But I wouldn't buy it myself. Maybe as a spare camera.

    • US6IBD

A little remark on the sharpness misses on fast lenses.
I sometimes come across this on Nikon D610. This problem is not solved by fine-tuning the lens. If you shoot the target, the sharpness is perfect.
In my case (and possibly in yours) - these are focusing screen errors. When shooting models at full height in nature, despite focusing on faces, the camera sometimes catches, located very close to the focusing area (spot), a contrasting object with many details and focuses on it.

      • Basil

A curious moment. I'll have to watch.

In my case, the 50D had a stable back focus on both test patterns and subjects. And on all lenses tested. Just on a dark whale lens, it was partially compensated by an increase in depth of field.

      • Alexey

someone confuses warm with soft. FE has nothing to do with phase detection autofocus. and the capture of neighboring subjects in AF is because the actual area of the CCD AF sensor is larger than the drawn AF square.

    • Alexey

”Ie on 50D, the image seems to be quite sharp, but I want more. Especially I found pictures from 40D - it was sharper. ”1. Most likely AF is not accurate, and its mistakes are perceived as soap. 2. 40D has a larger pixel, so the apparent sharpness is higher. 3. I hope the shooting is in RAW?

      • Basil

        1. Misses corrected by fine tuning autofocus.
        2. This is unlikely. And the autofocus is checked and the aperture is closed. But the picture is softer ...
        3. Rav, of course.

I add a test pattern of 100% crop center.
The same lens as on the 40D is gone. But both frames are covered by one stop.
        50D 35mm / 2 at f / 2.8

      • Basil

        And 40D 70-200 / 4 at f / 5,6
Both pictures are quite sharp, but the 50D looks softer.

        • Alexey

I was right. at 40D, the pixel size is simply larger, which is why it seems sharper. and on 50D the usual picture, as it happens without a sharp. and the full frame will be the same.

        • Alexey

I played with the sharp and noticed that on the 40D the picture was shocked by the camera. so the test is incorrect in principle)

          • Basil

Both pictures are cropped from a ravine with a sharp to zero.

            There is also 5d2 35/2 at f / 2.8
In my opinion, it is closer to 40D.

            • Alexey

Sharp there is definitely not zero. this is noticeable when trying to cheat.

            • Alexey

looked into EXIF - there is a sharp wound there when converting.

              • Basil

I also loaded the raves there.
In whom is it wound? in 40D?

            • Alexey

and in the case of a frame at 50D, the sharp is really at zero. in all other frames - the sharp is far from zero. see it yourself in EXIF

              • Basil

In this I am not strong. What parameter to watch?
When shooting on the camera, the sharpness was set - for how long I don't remember.
But when converting, the slider is equal to zero.
I always thought that the set sharpness parameters when shooting affect only the jpeg. And the rav is raw and then you can twist it as you like. This is not true?

            • Alexey

looked all over again. in RAW files the same, that is, soapy, sharpness. and in JPEG only in a file shot at 50D, the sharp is zeroed, while in others the sharp is wound. in general, everything is as it should be. no miracles.

          • Basil

Now I looked ... The site seems to be pinching.
The files downloaded above are here
            https://yadi.sk/d/Zv2y2q0H3mnmAQ

            • Alexey

              1. image style was S, sharpness there +3
              2. in RAW, yes, everything is reset and no camera settings, except for noise reduction and ALO, are applicable to it.
3.Yes, you can make anything from RAW during processing.
              4. I see with my eyes in the EXIF JPEG the sharpness twisted in the camera row.

              • Basil

                1. This does not affect the equal? or does it affect?
                4. It is not my purpose to mislead the public. Therefore, the Rabbi posted it.

Hence the opposite question: what should be done to get the same picture with the 50D as with the 40D or XNUMX?

            • Alexey

EXIF can be examined using exif.regex.info/exif.cgi

            • Alexey

              either using http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/
              so study

            • Alexey

the site is moronic) in general, take a close look at how and with what, with what settings you convert RAW. because the difference between frames is ONLY in this. there is nothing to do with the camera.

    • Basil

Alexey was right. My crooked hands were comparing the incomparable.
Dig deeper with the twists. It turns out that with the same processing at 70-200 (though different specimens) at 200mm f / 4, the detail in the 50D, I would say that even a little better than in the 5D2.

I posted the files of the crop center using the same link.

I will try again. But it seems in the first review I underestimated the 50D.

      • Alexey

I do not use either FSH or LR, so I can’t say for sure what they will envelope there by default. you need to set everything yourself with your hands and not trust everything by default.
I shopped RAW files from 40 and from 50, the picture is identical in sharpness, taking into account the lower resolution of 40. I have large monitors and high resolution, so the picture from 40 looks sharper on its own because it's just very small :)

      • Maria

5D2 could not compare with other Canon cameras, but when comparing with Nikosha, the first thing that struck the eye - 5d gives the pictures a great artistic quality, but they, IMHO, are less sharp.
Sharpness is equally increased, either by setting the settings on the camera to the maximum, or by fine-tuning in the Canon's native converter (if it is not maximized on the camera, especially in portrait mode). But the maximum sharpness when printing can come out sideways. Canon has blank white pixels. In the Nikon converter with a sharpe, only noise can be added.

What is the reason, I do not know, it would be interesting to find out from specialists.

        • Alexey

something all in a heap ... intra-camera sharpening is much coarser and causes many artifacts in JPEG, than if sharpening was increased in the same FS or LR, even FastStone sharpens more correctly and without artifacts.
and it's strange to talk about some white pixels - this does not happen with a correct sharpening. in general, examples are needed.

        • Alexey

and 5D frames with its large pixel size will always be noticeably sharper than many other cameras. essno, with bright and sharp optics and normal light. and after the sharpe on the post, of course))

but about printing, you can roll a book, there is a wagon of its own subtleties. what to print, what to print on, what kind of RIP is used, what ink and 100500 other features.

        • Alexey

re-read it again - realized that we are talking about TWO cameras? 5D and 5DMkII?

          • Maria

No, we compared 50d and 5d, if I'm not mistaken.
I wedged in (maybe out of place) because there were also gaps with defiance on Canon.

Now I will not take into account the sharpness on the camera.

So far, I work only with native converters, I can’t even put a fsh (license for the problem, and indeed with software).

Examples are not yet available. I'll throw it off in the subject, so that it is substantive, later. The main thing is not to forget you and to whom you can write, Arkady, unfortunately, does not have a ls on the site for communication (((

The impression is that the Canon programs of relatives have a more coarse sharpening (sharp SDF), or something. Seen at maximum zoom.

In general, the 5D Mark II in the photo, in which the converter artificially increased the sharpness of a strange pixel pattern, as if a woven pattern. In Nikon, it is softer, although a little noisier.

            • Alexey

From what I read, the opinion, perhaps erroneous, was formed, that someone simply does not know how to use the software)) there are no problems with sharpening with the canon. at all))
in general, examples of photos are needed.
(if you are in contact, then tell me how to find you there)

          • Maria

Sorry for the offografiya, but the essence, it seems to me, conveyed

  • Alexey

Arkady !!! Your site starts to really piss off! What the hell with links ?! How can I help someone if the answers are deleted with them ?!

    • B. R. P.

A thousand times Arkady wrote that comments with third-party links are moderated and do not appear immediately.

      • Alexey

well, stupid. non-operational. and then, above one link it still missed. but another one is gone. and how to help a person ??

    • Arkady Shapoval

nothing is removed. Nothing is moderated unless absolutely necessary. Comments with 2 or more links are submitted for review and await. Also, sometimes the system puts comments from the same user on moderation if he puts many links in the comments.

      • Alexey

So how do I give people an answer in the form of multiple links?

        • Arkady Shapoval

Go ahead and wait for the moderation. I apologize for the inconvenience caused.

          • Alexey

a message with a link appeared. but I don’t know if the late answer would be of any use to the questioner.
but in general, can you create a section for me on the site where I can write all technical comments without any problems? and to them and give all links.

            • Arkady Shapoval

I can't, but you are now on the approved list, so you can write just like that. If there are any delays, let me know.

  • Mr. Boggy

Eh, when I took my 60d, which did not bring me satisfaction, I did not know how badly small pixels and dependence on niche lenses for crop would not go to full frame later on the picture ... It's a pity that the race of megapixels and fake isos went too far. I don’t understand those who praise the opportunity to crop, are you a photographer or a newspaper typographer? Thanks to Arkady for the review, well done man!

    • Pokemon

For framing, 60D / 600D resolution is quite enough ... if someone does not, then something is wrong “in the conservatory”.

      • Alexey

when I know that I will have to crop a lot, I take 5Dsr, there is enough permission for everything.

I'm wondering what the limitations on controlling the exposure compensation are based on on cameras of this type: not only did they make a separate on / off lever mode, but also require first half-pressing the shutter release button, and then have time to make an amendment. Inconvenient PPC. As a result, the ergonomics of the Rebel are even more comfortable in terms of exposure compensation.

    • Victor

I don’t understand people at all who say the word “ergonomics” in relation to this brand of cameras.

Most often it's some kind of nightmare.

  • Dima

It's a pity that the matrix is old there and in terms of noise it is even worse than 20. The rest is a very balanced device.

    • Dubrovsky

Oh well, okay, all the same, Instagram will gobble up quality. And who looks at pictures on their computers these days. But the whole is not too shabby second and even click all rubbish, you don't mind the shutter, Will to creativity, finally!)

  • Dima

And yes, adjusting lenses ... sigma owners will understand) I tried it myself, a really useful work piece.

Hello. I bought this unit in perfect condition, mileage 12k. I didn’t pay attention right away, and then it was too late. The light meter does not stand still, runs back and forth, for example: if you set it to zero, you look, and it has already gone down by one or two or three divisions. Strange, but he always goes to the minus side, after a second again to zero (as he exhibited), you just want to click and he again went into minus. BUT, the pattern has not yet been revealed, it happens after a while for no apparent reason everything falls into place, and the exposure meter works exactly and as it should. You turn off the camera, turn it on the next day and again the same thing. I also noticed in the viewfinder the display sometimes blinks, it does not completely go out, namely, it blinks slightly for a second or two. I don’t want to carry it to the workshop, since we have no normal craftsmen here, and even the price will be more expensive than the device itself. I liked the device very much how it sits in the hand, and it shoots perfectly on the street, and the MP is only 15, not a little, not a lot, but in rooms with a flash it is gorgeous. So the noise does not bother me at all, since I do not raise ISO above 400 on any crop camera. Okay, back to the problem: can it be repaired, can something be cleaned, maybe it has oxidized, because as I said after 10-15 minutes of use, everything becomes normal with the exposure meter. Thank.

    • B. R. P.

Your camera drank some water, however.

    • Alexey

disassemble, rinse everything oxidized with pure alcohol.

Good day everyone. I have a question that may seem stupid. I changed my 4000d without looking at a 50d in excellent condition with a range of 29000 frames, and then I heard from many that the detail was lame at 50d, I didn't have much time to test the camera in the field. Am I wrong? Of the options to change were 50ka, 550 and 600d.

    • Victor

I did not see the point in replacing either by 50, let alone 550 and 600d

      • Andrei

The author himself defined his question. Uncertainly, of course, but hit the spot.

    • Novel

Such ... You got a more durable all-weather case and a slightly better display + a couple of extra frames with a little-used top display at the cost of losing three megapixels of the sensor and Wi-Fi.

Autofocus is still the same 9-point. Detail per se is an extremely controversial parameter, which implies that the frame was shot with perfect focus in ideal lighting conditions. If your camera cannot capture the image in the dark, and then it also generously sprinkles it with noises, then the detailing will not help here. IMHO, if you now associate with DSLRs, then either this is a compact 250D, or a fancy 7D Mark II, or one of the latest 80D-90Ds. Well, a couple of the last 1 DX Mark II - III, if you have money and an understanding of why this is. Everything else, neither as an independent purchase, nor as a source of exchange, deserves attention.

    • Novel

And, well, I forgot the 5D Mark III - IV and 6D Mark II.

    • Michael

No, it was right. True, there was not much point in changing

    • ISKANDER

When I started shooting with DSLRs ten years ago, I left the 50D in the past mainly because of its matrix and price, starting with the 550D. Since then I have used 550d, 1200d, 700d, 7d, 300d, 350d, 60d, and now about half a year 50d. A very big fan of the 18 megapixel matrix, I thought for a long time whether I would seriously want to shoot with something worse in terms of picture quality. Even a few years ago I bought 50d and returned it back - I did not like the nature of the noise (it is there in stripes, like a checkered notebook). Banding again, which I did not remember on the 18MP matrix. But now I understand that in 90 percent of tasks, the picture with 50D suits me. The rest of the camera is very close to 7d, except for autofocus. so the camera is very good, and from my point of view 4000d is much better. But the picture quality in difficult shooting conditions - when there is little light - is somewhat worse. As a person who has seen the flowering of digital cameras, I look with bitterness at cameras 2000d, 4000d and the like. for example, even in a bad dream, it would never have occurred to me that it was possible to remove the central sync pin of the hot shoe ...

    • ISKANDER

P.S. I forgot to say what I wanted to answer - the detail in 50D relative to 4000D does not change significantly, practically in any way. In general, I do not understand how she can “limp” there. The nature of the noise is different, the color palette is different (this is a very subtle difference, only with experience), but otherwise - comparable pictures. If you shoot in tens of thousands, then 50d is an excellent hammer for reporting. if a thousand a year - then a brick on the neck)

  • Mr. Boggy

And as for me, maybe I did not go the most convenient way, but really in terms of the picture, its similarity to seeing with the eye, it was when I bought the first 5d, there was not enough money for the second, but I also arranged the first one. A picture, on a crop, it will never be like ff, here the law of physics and the size of the matrices decide. Now so many cameras have come out, you can take pennies of different generations from your hands, you don't have to sit on crops, the optics for ff on ff are very good, the pictures come out more analog, and the sharpness is easier to get.

    • Mr. Boggy

I switched to ff in 2013, there is a penny, 1dc first, and crop 1,3, 1d mk2 for amateur reporting. As you get used to the pro series, then amateur crutches seem to be.

There is a 30D, does it make sense to upgrade to a 50D? Is she really the enemy of the 30D?

    • Novel

If it's short, there are two chairs ...

If longer - go and compare how the two models differ.

If it is shorter again, it makes no sense. Usually, a person understands what limitations he has run into and knows whether these limitations have been overcome in the cell that he sees as an alternative. If you just think that purchasing a new model will somehow improve the quality of your current images, it won't.

    • Victor

      Question from 2008 :-)

  • Novel

Friends, I need your help. I am the owner of this model, an interesting problem manifested itself, when the power is on, the camera starts to turn on and off with a very fast frequency, the display and the top screen flicker, and a lot of broken files appear after shooting. What could be the problem? Native battery, CF normal

  • Paul

I love my old friend the Canon 50d, so much so, I recently had a New shutter mechanism fitted, I've own her from New ,and won't be changing her for a newer model. a good canon camera is for life.
