Canon Zoom Lens EF-S 10-22mm 1: 3.5-4.5 USM ULTRASONIC

In short

Canon 10-22 / 3.5-4.5 is an ultra wide angle lens for cropped Canon EOS SLR cameras. Quite a popular model. In theory, this is the most 'powerful' ultrawide for Canon EOS cameras with APS-C sensor.

Primarily Canon 10-22 / 3.5-4.5 draws 10mm focal length at the wide end. The lens has a very fast and fairly quiet autofocusing. The obvious shortcomings are problems with image quality in the corners of the frame at 10 mm focal length.

Canon 10-22 / 3.5-4.5 is a very 'workable' lens, but due to its high cost, a newer and cheaper option Canon EF-S 10-18 / 4.5-5.6 IS STM is a very serious competitor for the old Canon 10-22 / 3.5-4.5.

History

Canon 10-22 / 3.5-4.5 is one of the first EFS mount lensesdesigned for use with cropped SLR cameras Canon EOS.

Canon 10-22 / 3.5-4.5 Announced 19 August 2004 year. Around the same time, the very first Canon lenses with an EFS mount were also introduced.

10 years later, 13 May 2014 Canon 10-22 / 3.5-4.5 was supplemented by a model Canon EF-S 10-18 / 4.5-5.6 IS STM with less aperture and a smaller set of focal lengths, but with a built-in image stabilizer and a stepping focus motor.

Separately, it is still worth remembering the lens Canon EF-M 11-22 / 4-5.6 IS STMdesigned for Canon EOS M mirrorless cropped cameras and announced 6 June 2013 year.

Canon 10-22 / 3.5-4.5 Available as an Alternative Canon 17-40 / 4 L for those who shoot on cropped cameras.

There are quite a lot of super-widths with a maximum relative aperture of 1: 3.5-4.5, usually these are advanced models that are positioned higher than models with 1: 4 (4.5) -5.6. So, for example, Canon 10-22 / 3.5-4.5 is considered a class higher than the next Canon EF-S 10-18 / 4.5-5.6 IS STM. By the way, the point here is not only in aperture ratio.

Canon's maximum f / 3.5 aperture of 10-22 / 3.5-4.5 is only a third step lighter than the f / 4 of many other similar lenses with a constant apertureFor example, Tokina 12-24 / 4. At the same time, F / 3.5 is 2/3 steps less than F / 2.8 for models Tokina 11-16 / 2.8, Tokina 11-20 / 2.8, PENTAX 11-18 / 2.8, FUJINON 8-16 / 2.8. The lightest of these can be considered Tokina 14-20 / 2.0. At the same time, it is important to realize that very often super-widths are used on highly covered diaphragms, which is why the maximum relative aperture is not always as important as for other lenses.

Canon Zoom Lens EF-S 10-22mm 1: 3.5-4.5 USM ULTRASONIC

Assembly

The lens is pleasant to the touch, but it feels worse than, for example, Sigma 10-20 / 3.5. The Canon 10-22 / 3.5-4.5 assembly is a bit out of reach with some Canon L-series lenses. The lens has a considerable weight, which is almost 400 grams. But on small cameras like Canon EOS 500D, the weight balance is practically not broken.

Canon 10-22 / 3.5-4.5 Uses Large Classic 'Professional' Filters diameter by 77 mm. The installation of filters with a thick rim affects vignetting. I tested the Canon 10-22 / 3.5-4.5 with the cheap Chinese CITIWIDE CPL 77mm polarizer (8 mm rim), which gave a strong extra vignette for 10 mm focal length.

There is a bayonet mount mark and a mark on the case for quick installation of the hood. The lens uses a plastic hood, which is fixed in special grooves located near the front lens of the lens. The hood can be installed in upside down for transportation. While changing the focal length, the hood does not move. It's important: lens hood EW-83E not included in the scope of delivery and must be purchased separately.

When changing the focal length, the rear lens moves in the middle of the lens barrel. The effect of the air pump is weak. On the back of the lens, the lens body is covered with a special dust coating.

When changing the focal length the front lens of the lens moves in waves back and forth. Due to the successful design, all movements occur inside the lens barrel and we can assume that it uses internal zoom (does not change its size when the focal length is changed). It turns out that if you install a light filter on the lens, then visually Canon 10-22 / 3.5-4.5 will not change its size when the focal length is changed. The maximum extended front lens is observed at 10 mm focal length, minimum - at 16 mm. The lens movement does not exceed 1 cm.

The lens has metal bayonet mount. The zoom ring is rubberized and rotates 60 degrees. Plastic focus ring, narrow, but at the same time quite comfortable. The focusing ring has a micro-play, when you lightly touch it, it can quietly 'click'.

Number of petals aperture - 6 items. Moreover, they are slightly rounded and form a regular hexagon on strongly covered diaphragms.

Canon Zoom Lens EF-S 10-22mm 1: 3.5-4.5 USM ULTRASONIC

Focusing

Canon 10-22 / 3.5-4.5 uses ultrasonic focusing motor Canon USM (Ultrasonic). The lens uses a large and powerful ultrasonic focusing motor ring type. The difference between the ring ultrasonic and the reduced ultrasonic motor is shown and described. here.

Focusing very fast. On camera Canon EOS 500D the lens behaves very well.

Noise from the focus motor is almost inaudible, but still a small level of noise is present and will affect the sound quality when shooting video using the microphone built into the camera.

During focusing, the front and rear lenses remain stationary, as the lens uses internal focus. It is possible to use any filters without problems.

The minimum focusing distance is only 24 cm, while you can shoot with a maximum magnification of 1: 5.9.

The lens has a window with a distance scale with marks in meters and feet. The scale is small, on it there are labels only for 0.24, 0.4, 1 m and the label is 'infinity'. Such a scale in itself is of little use and is present more for show (justification of this thought here).

In manual focus mode, the ring rotates 90 degrees, when it reaches the extreme positions it does not rest, but continues to slide, without affecting the focus.

There is only one switch on the lens body that is responsible for the focus mode - 'AF / MF' (auto / manual focus). Auto AF is supported by Canon continuous manual focus control FTM (Full Time Manual Focusing), which implies that you can rotate the focus ring at any time. According to the instructions, manual control is available after focusing on the subject in single-frame autofocus mode (ONE SHOT AF). Canon FTM details well described here.

Features:

  1. The effect of 'Focus Breathing' (changes in the viewing angle during focusing) is very poorly expressed.
  2. Canon 10-22 / 3.5-4.5 has no special focus problems in Live View (tested on Canon 450D).
  3. When changing the focal length, focusing is a bit confused.
  4. The lens does not have a hard stop (hard infinity mechanical stop) which allows you to accurately and quickly focus the lens to infinity under any external temperature conditions.
  5. There is no depth of field scale and labels for working in the infrared spectrum.
  6. Focus shift (shift-focus) was not noticed during operation and testing.

Image quality

The lens was designed at a time when the camera with the highest pixel density was Canon EOS 20D at 8 MP (summer 2004).

Canon 10-22 / 3.5-4.5 is optically good. With an over-wide one, one must take into account that almost all lenses in the corners and edges of the image do not give the best image quality, and therefore at this point you should always make a discount.

Sharpness

  • good resolution in the center of the frame over the entire range of focal lengths on an open aperture. Significant improvement in sharpness when closing aperture
  • sharpness in the center of the frame by 10 mm and an open aperture is worse than on an open and 22 mm (that is, at the wide end, the lens works worse than on a long one)
  • a serious problem is the angles of 10-12 mm of the focal length, which come back to normal only with a strong aperture. It is possible to achieve really good sharpness in the corners only in the range of 13-22 mm

Distortion

  • there is a small barrel-shaped distortion in the range of 10-14 and pincushion by 14-22 mm
  • maximum distortion is visible at 10 mm
  • the nature of distortion is unified, easily corrected in the editor
  • less distortion than many other similar lenses

Vignetting

  • the overall level of vignetting is at a level typical for such lenses
  • vignetting is most pronounced at 10 mm at F / 3.5
  • with increasing focal length, vignetting at an open aperture decreases
  • vignetting almost disappears at f / 5.6
  • vignetting is easily fixable in the editor

Aberration

Other

  • the lens does a good job of backlighting, but you can still catch glare
  • aperture blades form a regular hexagon on almost any concealed aperture value
  • on closed diaphragms you can get a pronounced effect of a 6-ray star

The data on this lens is in most popular RAW converters (it is definitely in ACR, Lightroom), which makes it very easy to correct distortion and vignetting with one click.

This lens is “sewn up” in all cameras released after 2004, and therefore it will be easy to get automatic correction of some optical defects of the lens. For example, on camera Canon EOS 500D, released in 2009, with the Canon 10-22 / 3.5-4.5 installed, the 'Correction' function works. perifer. lighting '(i.e. vignetting control).

My experience

The Canon 10-22 / 3.5-4.5 is a nice-looking lens with stable focusing and a predictable picture. But in general, the price tag for Canon 10-22 / 3.5-4.5 is too high.

Original Canon 10-22 / 3.5-4.5 and Nikon 12-24 / 4 at the start of sales they generally had some kind of space price tags. True, in 2003-2004 there were no other good alternatives for these super-widths, but decades later many worthy competitors appeared.

I recommend looking at a more modern Canon EF-S 10-18 / 4.5-5.6 IS STM, which in general is a better choice than the old Canon 10-22 / 3.5-4.5.

There is nothing more complicated than selecting a width / oversize. Typically, the selection of such lenses is approached more carefully than with any other lenses.

In search of such a lens, you should still pay attention to pretty professional options from third-party manufacturers: Sigma EX 10-20 / 3.5, Tokina AT-X PRO 11-20 / 2.8 и Tamron SP 10-24 / 3.5-4.5 VC.

Canon 10-22 / 3.5-4.5 is a good ultra-wide for a cropped DSLR, it is not the most balanced solution, but at the same time Canon 10-22 / 3.5-4.5 is the most 'powerful' original ultra-wide for cropped Canon EOS SLR cameras. New Canon EF-S 10-18 / 4.5-5.6 IS STM is a more balanced solution, but also does not have some of the advantages inherent in Canon 10-22 / 3.5-4.5.

10 main advantages

  1. very fast auto focus (USM ring motor is used)
  2. focus type internal
  3. virtually internal zoom (the front lens does not leave the frame rim when changing the focal length)
  4. good build quality: metal bayonet mount, rubberized zoom ring, bayonet type hood with the ability to install the reverse side
  5. many special optical elements in the optical scheme (aspherical and ultralow dispersion)
  6. the ability to use 10 mm of focal length (for example, Tokina, Pentax and Sony A do not have similar lenses with 10 mm)
  7. the presence of a lens profile in most popular RAW converters
  8. smooth and proportional drop in aperture from 10 to 22 mm of focal length
  9. good sharpness in the center of the frame, slight vignetting, slight distortion
  10. good glare resistance

10 main disadvantages

  1. high price, while Canon 10-22 / 3.5-4.5 is not an L-series lens
  2. lack of an integrated image stabilizer (for example, it has Tamron 10-24 / 3.5-4.5 VC)
  3. the lens hood is not included, the lens hood is very important for an ultra wide angle lens
  4. focus ring is plastic and has a small pitch
  5. not the highest aperture (e.g. Tokina 11-20 / 2.8 aperture significantly higher)
  6. 77 mm large filter diameter (e.g. Canon 11-22 / 4-5.6 diameter only 55 mm)
  7. there is no all-weather protection, there is not even a rubber O-shaped lens mount seal (for example, a lens PENTAX 11-18 / 2.8 AW has a very high level of protection)
  8. only 6 aperture blades (star effect on only 6 rays)
  9. very low resolution at 10 mm at the corners of the frame on open and covered apertures
  10. very strong level of chromatic aberration in the corners and edges of the image by 10-12 mm

I suggest introducing an experimental function: a paid request for a review of lenses, for example, reviews for 5 lenses are planned, for 50r you can vote for 1 out of 5 lenses and affect the order of reviews)

    • Oleg

This will help if there is an armful of lenses for review. Otherwise, you need to fold on the desired lens so that it is bought and reviewed.

    • Denis

not this way. Let's say the cost of each review is $ 100. on a specific page you can see how much has already been collected for each of the lenses. when this amount is typed in one of the lines, the review is published. and the one who donated the most receives 50% of the collected amount back. so that there is an incentive for greedy users to donate more)

Regarding different weights, there is such a nuance that any body has different weights at the equator and the pole, as well as depending on the height above sea level. Of course, if you do not climb Everest, there will not be much difference, but nevertheless it is.

In used condition, this subject can be found for 10000 rubles (if you look).
But it will be interesting mainly on the old crop of 8-10 megapixels.
Plus expensive 77 mm filters (UV, polar, star).
    Used 10-18mm / 4,5-5,6 is slightly more expensive - about 12000 rubles.
But the picture in the corners at the short end is more interesting for him.
Therefore, I took it, despite the old Canon EOS 400D.

The works of Mikhail Dubrovinsky are magnificent, but how many of them remain from the original photo?

The problem of over-wides is that if you took one, then the second is difficult for you to find application. For example, let’s say I might want some 70-200 / 4 or 70-300 to be compact, and another 70-200 / 2.8 for portraits, and 150-600 to them, so that for the birds and cover the upper part of the range . That is, at least two televisions are ok. And to them you can still macrofix 100 and portrait 135 - it will not be much superfluous.

And what about shirik. Based on the tasks, what is more important - more aperture for the sake of small flu and dark conditions or compactness. And then everything is debatable. And it turns out that due to the cheapness and compactness of 10-18, Canon is the perfect choice for crop. Well, or 10-24 from Tamron, because it is universal and with a stub, but if you have 10-18, you’ll already consider taking it or not. Well, at full frame you can still think about 11-24 in a pair to 16-35 (both, especially the first one, are very expensive) and the 8-15 fisheye as a very convenient dual lens. Or a full-fledged circular fish, or a good shirik with interesting distortion, which can be used or straightened out.

10-22 was good at the time as a semi-pro solution from below to expand the range of the amazing 17-55. The same filter size is 77 professional millimeters. It is still quite good, but it has been cheaper and better for a long time.

We tested the lens on a Canon EOS 80D camera. We can say that we were lucky with the shooting conditions. At ENEA at the end of May, the bright sun was replaced by heavy rains, and with such a wide viewing angle there really was a place to roam!

Good day. Dyakuyu for ts_kaviy that detailed look. Make sure to be a weasel of standards on the Canon 5d mark II frame, which is a clear lens for crop cameras. Dyakuyu.

will not be in any way
