The fastest zoom lenses

Super fast zoom lenses

Super fast aperture zoom lenses and abnormally high aperture zoom lenses

While preparing the Sigma 18-35mm 1:1.8 review, I decided to see how many fast zoom lenses with aperture F<=2 are in our advanced time. As it turned out - not so much, and some of them have already been discontinued. In the list below, I have included only classic interchangeable photo lenses with the support auto focus:

TOP of the brightest autofocus zooms:

As a rule, immediately after zooms, photographers begin to get involved in wide-angle lenses. Because it becomes much more interesting not to remove a distant object, but to convey the panorama that has opened to the eye as widely as possible. Such a lens is especially in demand during urban photography - dense buildings do not allow you to move a sufficient distance away, which allows you to fit everything you need in the frame. Or while photographing parties. Fifth remark: wide-angle lenses are very fond of realtors and hotel owners. Thanks to this lens, the rooms look bigger than they are.

      1. How is your comment related to the topic of the fastest zoom lenses?
      2. A “zoom lens” is any lens with a variable focal length. A zoom lens can be wide angle, they are not different entities.
      3. For shooting architecture, it’s best not to use any wide-angle lenses (including those with variable focal length), but specifically shift lenses. They are also optimal for high-quality interior photography (the necessary panorama of the interior with a minimum of perspective distortion is built from several shots taken with the help of lens movements with a stationary camera).

This comment is more like a bot response, which simply copied the text from the Internet for some key phrase. By the way, it was him that I already saw somewhere. I wonder what the author of the comment was thinking about when he posted this nonsense.

        • Denis

but he wrote everything correctly and readily
and, conversely, Olga’s statement is controversial, I always thought that after a zoom the next would be a fix of 35,50 or 85mm

        • Joe

          1. Your comment is not related to the topic under discussion and does not contain useful information. Please do not clutter comments with such posts.
          2. Study photography, learn to understand technical terminology and think rationally.
          3. If you do not understand something, do not rush to call what you have read nonsense - at least, this demonstrates the low level of your communication culture, at the most - your incompetence.

That is why immediately after whale 18-55 the most popular one is 50 / 1.8, and next to it, or 55-200, 55-250, 70-300, yeah.

  • Victor

I read many times about the uniqueness of the design and optics of these two Olympus zooms: 14-35 and 35-100.

  • VasilVasil

“During the preparation of the Sigma 18-35mm 1: 1.8 review” where this review is, please link to the studio. I was also interested in him.

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Will be soon

      • Denis

        promises to be very interesting)

  • Victor

Out of this whole group, only 2 per full frame

  • VasilVasil

Just such Sigma 18-35mm 1: 1.8 DС HSM A and Sigma 50-100mm 1: 1.8 DС HSM A, for APS-C DSLRs and allow you to bypass the advantage of 1 stop (and here 1,33 stops) according to ISO on FF. I have not taken this Sigma 18-35 yet, but I am tuned. In this case, the price is obviously more attractive.

    • Arkady Shapoval

They allow you to use ISO at a level lower than with 2.8 at full frame, this partially equalizes image quality at high ISO. But at the same time with the same 28-70 / 2 the full frame is still in isolation

      • VasilVasil

Sorry, Arkady 28-70 F2.0 who produces for FF, for what money and at what weight? And this Sigma will just make it possible to compensate for one stop of ISO due to 1,33 stop of the diaphragm. By the way, add the product code A24 to your list of prospective reviews of Tamron 70-2.8 / F2 G032, I think this is a serious device.

      • Alexey

but, monies, this glass is only for UPC and at a price, let's say, very few people can afford (from amateurs, and professionals do not need to read reviews). but in general - there are a lot of beautiful glasses, for example, for cinema, only there prices start from $ 50000, so the mention of expensive glasses, of course, is useful, but for the readers of this resource it is hardly applicable :)

        • Arkady Shapoval

oh well, 18-35 already for 700 dollars
          tokina 14-20 already for 500
          Data on https://www.bhphotovideo.com/

          • Alexey

I'm talking about 28-70 2.0, and not about sigma, which, of course, is good

    • TT

If you need a suitable result, then do not take 18-35.
About 3 years ago I thought the same thing. In reality, the docking station does not help, even with the best possible adjustment, and you also need to spend a lot of time on this.

    • Victor

Everything is very simple, do not repeat the mistakes of others:
      1. Sigma this size and weight with a typical 24-70 per ff
      2. But at the same time it has a noticeably smaller zoom range (~ 27-57 equiv)
      3. Controversial autofocus
      4. On ff, you can put, in addition to everything, a cheap fifty fifty 50 as a light "staff", where you will look for a cheap 1.8 / 35 for a crop, I do not know)) And there are a lot of similar examples.
      5. The difference between crop and ff is not only in the flu and working iso (which could be partially compensated for by this sigma)

  • Irina

Thanks for the useful information. I have an old Canon, I plan to change the camera. I’m looking for a fast zoom lens, since I often have to shoot indoors for my site https://po-krymu.ru but so much data that the head is spinning. It will now be a little easier to make the right choice.

  • Anatoly

I ask you to tell more about TOKINA ATX-PRO lenses, from fifty dollars and more - I do not like wide angle. Best regards, Anatoly.

    • Arkady Shapoval

In conditions having F <= 2 (otherwise Tokin could have been sketched here from 2.6) During the preparation of the Sigma 18-35mm 1: 1.8 review, I decided to see how many fast zoom lenses with aperture F <= 2 are available in our advanced time ... As it turned out - not so many, and some of them have already been discontinued.

  • Novel

Good day to all! The Tamron 35-150mm F / 2-2.8 lens reminded me that I had such a Sony-717 camera. She has a fast zoom lens Carl Zeiss Vario Sonnar f / d 2-2,4; f = 9,7-48,5 mm (equivalent 38-190 mm), filter diameter 58 mm.

    • Victor

The 717 had a matrix with a fingernail, as in modern mobile phones.

      • Novel

The article is not about matrices, but about lenses. It's called "The Fastest Zoom Lenses". At the very end of the article it says “Do you know any more? Be sure to include them in the comments.”

        • Novel

          Sample photo Sony-F717.

        • Rodion

This is all cool, only we are talking about lenses for systems with interchangeable lenses. In addition, do not forget that for small matrices it is usually easier to make a lens with a larger aperture than for a large matrix with the same EGF.

          • Novel

Well, actually, yes, I agree, we are talking about removable lenses. Although it is not formally written anywhere. I admit my mistake. Personally, I was strongly “hooked” in this article by the Tamron 35-150mm F / 2-2.8. In my opinion, this should be a very convenient lens for amateur photography, i.e. for me. And in combination with a mirrorless camera, you can say the reincarnation of the Sony-F717 at a higher level. Tell me, please, who knows where this lens can be bought? Haven't found it yet.

            • Victor

Interchangeable lenses are mentioned in the article itself, starting with the words “I added to the list below ...”))

For amateur photography, 35-150 is a kind of choice, well, it seems to me.

              • Novel

Oh yes, really guilty, I missed this phrase ... A peculiar choice? I don't understand, what's wrong with this choice? For my taste - a universal set of focal lengths. A wide angle will only sometimes be missed.

              • Victor

Rodion correctly noted below - a universal set for a portrait painter.

If you shoot everything in a row - non-universal and cumbersome.

            • Rodion Eshmakov

Here it is nevertheless indicated: “In the list below, I have included only classic interchangeable photo lenses with support for auto focus:”, although not so obvious and catchy.
35-150mm is a pretty handy set of focal lengths for a full frame if you shoot mostly portraits. I have a set of fixes for portrait photography, just from 35 to 180 mm as a rule.

              • Novel

Yes, I agree, I did not notice this phrase.

        • Victor

Well, if you have a removable lens on Sonya, then there are no questions.

          Although I have vague doubts

And there are a lot of compacts with bright nailed zooms (up to f / 1.4 (!) - LX7), a dozen or two will definitely be typed.

          • Novel

Well, that was interesting for me too. I thought that Sonya's aperture zoom is rather an exception.

  • Konstantin

The newly introduced Canon 24-105 f2,8 deserves to be on this list!

    • Arkady Shapoval

Of course it shouldn’t, it’s only 2.8, it was the same a long time ago Tamron 24-105 / 2.8, and the list says “with aperture F<=2”, or did you not notice this feature?

      • Oleg

        tamron 28-105

        • Arkady Shapoval

          essence does not change
