Unusual third-party lens incompatibility

A brief note about the very unusual problem of some cameras in the family Canon EOS with Sigma Art lenses.

Unusual third-party lens incompatibility

Enlarge picture. This is how incomplete camera compatibility is manifested. Canon EOS 6D Mark II (and some other similar ones) and the lens Sigma ART 50mm 1: 1.4 DG HSM (and some other similar ones). Shared a photo Angelina Startseva

This incomplete and rare incompatibility is exactly what manifests itself, as shown in the photo in the title of this post (enlarge photo).

In all photos in a bunch Canon EOS 6D Mark II, Canon EOS 5D Mark IV (and some other similar ones) and the lens Sigma ART 50mm 1: 1.4 DG HSM (and some other similar ones) on open diaphragms dark / translucent appear concentric circles and stripes.

The treatment is quite simple: In the camera menu, disable automatic distortion correction. For example, on a camera Canon EOS 6D Mark II on the menu "Aberra correction the lens”Should be set to Corr. periphery. lighting .: OFF, Corr. chromium. Aberration: OFF, Distortion Correction: OFF, Diffraction Correction: OFF. Also, the latest lens firmware may help.

Most likely, the camera malfunctions due to the built-in profile of a particular lens. It may also be part of a new way to “fight” third party lenses.

If someone came across a similar on their camera, please indicate the model of the camera and lens in conjunction with which such a disgrace occurs.

Sigma has long given an official response that it will not do anything about it. The reason for this effect is rather complicated, I know, but writing a long treatise here does not make sense. In fact, this does not interfere with the shooting, so you can just ignore it.

    • Basil

"The reason for this effect is rather complicated, I know, but it makes no sense to write a long treatise here."
Alexey, this is brilliant! Why not write to me that I will not write ...

      • Alexey

for a detailed answer, I will have, firstly, to cite data that fall under the NDA, and secondly, to go deep into programming. I don’t think that all of this here will be understandable and / or interesting to someone. and yes, it’s NOT specifically done that way.

        • Igor

Have you signed this same NDA?

A lot of people are engaged in programming now, this is not a housewives forum after all, so do not be shy)

    • Andreykr

In fact, Sigma in March 2018 released a firmware that fixes this jamb, and in 2016, when it was discovered, it was simply advised to disable the correction in the settings.

      • Sergey

On art they released, but on the ex series they wrote to me "we do not support the old one." Sigma ex 50mm 1.4 lens. If anyone is interested, the problem is aggravated by the fact that, apart from 1dx mii, on the mirror, it froze a little. (On the canon 1dx mii, he lies a lot under certain conditions.) The situation can be smoothed out a little using spot metering. In canon r mirrorless cameras, for example, he lies godlessly and even a point one does not always save. Apparently it is triggered on the area on which it is focused and, accordingly, this vignetting map is chaotically correcting it. Disabled in the menu to regret it is impossible. The coefficient is floating, you can't enter an amendment with your hands either. Consider when buying. All good shots.

  • Artem

Considering that this only affects old versions - I think no one did this on purpose

a very clever move by the manufacturers. Imagine that a customer is going to buy third-party optics, picks up a test in a store and here you are, he gets such an image. then he takes his own optics and everything is in order, of course, he already has no desire to buy non-native optics, since he subconsciously thinks that other non-docking can happen, because an ordinary buyer will not immediately figure out what the matter is. Today, Apple has paid nearly 500 million to older iPhones, admitting that it deliberately slowed down older phones with a new update to get people to buy new phones. I suspect that they always used this technique, but I had no idea about it, although while I was using technology from this company, when new versions of the operating system were released, even 3-5 year old cars began to slow down strongly, although they had what they needed. Capitalism, as they say ... As for the incompatibility of lenses - I personally had such a situation - many years ago the Tamron 17-50 / 2.8 sometimes hung on the Nikon D90 (to fix it, it was necessary to disconnect and reconnect, this happened about once a month), that the same lens but under the Pentax mount on my K-01 never stuck and generally gives excellent results.

You should not look for a black cat in a black room, especially if it is not there. This effect was not obtained / created specifically.

      • Evgen

        ... black ...

      • Roman

This is not black, this is a red cat.

      • Dim

Even if you are not paranoid, this does not mean that they do not follow you! :-)

  • Dmitriy

This also happened, I bought a new 6d mark 2, before that there was the first version, and also the sigma 50 1.4 lens of the old version, turned off the lens correction and everything became buzzing, at first I was upset that I had to change the lens.

  • Sandijs

Do these concentric circles appear when using Zeiss lenses?

    • Michael

      It seems about sigma

    • Erbolat

      Zeiss is not Sigma!

  • Dmitry (e_dimas)

The instructions for Canon cameras say that with third-party lenses you need to turn off all lens corrections, because they (corrections) may not work correctly.
    Read the gentlemen's instructions.

    • Elvira

What if correction data is not available?

So in the settings they wrote !!

  • Sergei

I caught the same effect with Canon EOS 6D Mark II + Sigma 50mm 1: 1.4 DG HSM (not ART version). He treated by disconnecting “Corr. periphery. illumination ”.

    • Sergei

Sergey, I also have a Canon 6D2 and a Sigma 50 HSM. So here is the actual question, have you noticed that focusing on the phase sensors (through the viewfinder), everything is fine, like with a native 50mm / 1.4 sapop. I mean the exposure, the frames are the same in terms of illumination. If we shoot in live view, then the frame is darker and goes into yellow tones, shooting with a 50 / 1.4 sapop the picture is identical to that shot through the viewfinder.

  • Ivan

I caught such a joke on a canon RP camera when trying to connect a 50 / 1,4 HSM to it, plus to concentric circles - autofocus worked only across the screen, it was not possible to select a focus point. the problem was solved by disabling all image enhancers

  • Victoria

Thank you very much for the information, saved.
    Canon 6d mark 2 camera, sigma 85 1.4 lens

  • Nmk

I also have a 35mm art for 6dm2. But he also gave an error. I found a solution to the problem with some Asian blogger on YouTube, turned off all the corrections, it works just fine.
You don't even need to build a focus

  • Eugene

Sigma 85 DG 1.4F + Canon RP there are rings, the instruction helped

  • Victor

I have this situation with my recently acquired EOS 6R and Sigma 35 | F1,4 Art

  • Vladimir

camera kenon R decided to put Sigma 35mm 1,4 ART

    • Alexey

so what? everything has already been said.

    • Oleg

At first I thought it was such a patterned tile)

  • Alexey

Faced R6 + sigma ex 50mm 1.4. Thanks for the article, it helped a lot-)

  • Irina

Hello. I faced another problem, and a serious one. There are no answers yet. R6 + sigma 50 1.4 is not art, when used with a flash, the picture becomes dark on the screen, to such an extent that it cannot even focus properly. Disabling or enabling Exposure Simulation does not help. Everything is dark, and occasionally this glitch does not appear at all. The camera lens does not define as sigma. Only the focal one writes. Maybe someone came across?

    • Svetlana

I came across. I use a bundle of R6 + sigma 85 mm 1.4 (not art) - I figured out the circles easily, thanks to the author of the article, but when shooting in the studio, the picture on the screen is dark, almost black
(imitation of exposure is disabled, since I shoot in the studio with flashes), at the same time it focuses perfectly and the captured picture gives out excellent. BUT it is impossible to work, because it is corny that you do not see the model on the screen. I don't know how to fix it, it can turn off some setting, but there is no understanding of which one. The lens is put on through a proprietary adapter. Who came across and knows how - please tell me. Thank you in advance

    • Veronica

      A similar situation with canon 6 d mark 2+ 35 1.4 sigma (art)
When I put on the flash, I can only focus on the video finder, since live view does not focus and only produces a dark screen. Or, you have to switch to manual focus. If anyone has solved this problem, tell me how, please!

  • Natalia

There were exactly the same circles as in the photo. The camera turned off in life mode, no buttons worked until I pulled out the battery and put my Canon lens on. The bundle was canon 6dm2 + sigma 35 mm 1.4 art.

  • Olga

Hello everyone . There were also circles, they were removed, but now the problem is different ...
Camera canon r adapter while temporarily took Viltrox, lens sigma Art 1.4
When I look through the viewfinder, it’s as if I see an adapter, right around the screen it’s like a gray circle is glaring. Can anyone come across

    • Arkady Shapoval

what kind of lens is that?

  • Alexander

Thank you so much for the tip on disabling peripheral illumination correction! Everything is great now!

  • Laurent

    Merci pour cette solution

  • Elvira

    Tell me please.
canon 5D mark 3 with any of the lenses takes round photographs (((
I tried through the settings, it did not work.
    Lens Override Correction
    “correction data not available”.

    • B. R. P.

Well, the lenses are round))) what did you want. What lenses exactly? maybe they are cropped.

      • Yuriy

5 lenses and all circular fish-eye, no matter what you put - the pictures are round :)

  • stephane

A câmera travou e "rejeitou" a lente

  • Irina

Is there any way to remove these dark rings on the finished photos?

    • Arkady Shapoval

      only in RAW

  • Daria

Thanks for the useful information! The 6D mark ii kit with Sigma 35 mm 1.4 art showed these circles. Set up according to the instructions, everything works!

  • Gas

Also have 6Dmk11 and have the same problem with Tamron 85mm 1.8 had to remove all corrections to work.
