Nikon D3500. Review from the reader Radozhiva

Camera overview Nikon D3500 specially for Radozhiva prepared Iskander “notapic” Latypov.

Nikon D3500

Nikon D3500

Greetings to all readers of this site! I myself have been following the resource for quite some time, read quite a few articles and extracted a lot of useful information, which prompted me to write a review on one camera from those that have not yet been shown. This will Nikon D3500, the latest model among all Nikon amateur crop DSLRs.

What is left of D3400: the same body, matrix, battery, processor, ergonomics, control, autofocus, speed, etc.

What has been changed: the design of the case has become more solid (very similar to D5500) the Fn button was removed, the vertical row of buttons to the left of the screen, the flash activation button moved to the front side, the Live View lever was added near the mode drum, instead of the LV button of the previous model.

Design

Externally D3500 became more like D5500, the camera is above level. The case is now black instead of the dark gray of the predecessor. It is executed quite beautifully, there are no brilliant elements, the carcass itself looks laconic, without unnecessary details. The mode dial began to look more pleasant than the old model - now it is not convex, but has a strict geometric shape. It reminds me of a small skillfully carved stone, and not some kind of trinket.

Ergonomics and body

The carcass itself is very small - I calmly put the camera in my pocket, disconnecting the lens. The camera is very light, according to data from the Nikon website, the carcass weighs only 360 grams. However, this may be a minus - in the eyes of customers, such a camera does not really look “representative” because of its miniature size.

The camera immediately sat in her hand, like a glove. The case consists of fairly high quality and pleasant to the touch plastic. The areas that are under the right hand are rubberized. There is a protrusion for the thumb so that it does not move up. Management is implemented very conveniently, you can safely be controlled even with one hand, which you won’t D3400. Of the minuses I want to note - my little finger constantly slides from the body, which is inconvenient when shooting. Also, the buttons on the case are quite small, which makes it very difficult to wear gloves. Especially, this concerns the navigation control and the OK button, which I always use in working with manual optics, in order to remove digital zoom in Live View after focusing with one click.

By the way, there is one minus - when installing a whale AF-P (not to be confused with AF-S !!!) 18-55 / 3.5-5.6G VR camera does not keep balance on a flat surface and “pecks” the front rim of the lens on the surface.

Despite the lack of dust and moisture protection, the camera very steadily endured all my reportage shooting in smoke, dust, snow and in the rain. Once, while shooting in the forest at +4 degrees, a pile of snow fell on the camera, which immediately began to melt. I thought that at least the microphone, sync contact and bayonet would flood - but the snow melted, then icy, but nothing happened to the camera. Now she has a considerable mileage for an amateur DSLR - more than 32.000 frames in 9 months of use, but everything works like a clock.

Nikon D3500

Nikon D3500

Screen and optical viewfinder

JVI quite small and displays only 95% of the vertical and horizontal frames. It turns out that ultimately only 90% of the scene is visible in it, which means that the edges of the image may get unwanted details that will then have to be removed when editing. Increase JVI 0.85x, there is a possibility of diopter adjustment from -1.7 to +0.5. The bottom of the viewfinder displays the focus confirmation point, electronic range finder, information about shutter speed, aperture, frame buffer and ISO operation - you can’t see the ISO value, either indicate that it is automatic, or instead show the number of frames that can still be written to the memory card. This is a significant minus, because you have to be distracted by the screen to find out the value of the set ISO.

The screen on the camera is very good. The detail is high, the color rendering is real or consistent with it, the screen does not light up in bright light. The frame rate in LV 60 fps, which negates the "jelly effect" with a strong approximation. This helps a lot when working with manual optics. In addition, the menu can be used to automatically suppress the “rolling shutter” effect when shooting among sodium or mercury lamps. This adds even more convenience when working in LV. Unfortunately, it is neither touch-sensitive nor rotary - this is the distinctive minus of all cameras of the three-thousandth series.

The menu has 2 types of display - for "lovers" with three animated reels - excerpt, aperture, sensitivity. Pretty convenient thing for those who just picked up the camera in their hands. The second type is very simplified, the same elements are displayed, but in the form of numbers, without changing parameters. Suitable for those who have already figured out the shooting parameters and their display. This screen can be made black and white, white and black (for bright light) and bluish-black.

Nikon D3500

Nikon D3500

Bayonet mount

The camera uses a standard Nikon F mount. The camera fully supports only AF-S and AF-P lenses. The camera, like D3400, there is no lever for the extreme position of the diaphragm - which means that you can install Nikon lenses PRE AI without any alterations and completions. But there is one very important minus - any lens with an aperture ring will work with the camera only in mode M. Although it will be AF Nikkor 85mm / 1.4D, without a focus motor, even AF-S Nikkor 17-35mm / 2.8D - since it has an aperture ring, despite the presence of a built-in focusing motor, operation can only be carried out in manual mode. This is a very serious minus, characteristic only for this model and its predecessor.

Nikon D3500

Nikon D3500

Autofocus and buffer

The focusing module is inherited from the previous model - it uses the same Nikon Multi-CAM 1000 with 11 AF points, the central one is cross, supports AF with lenses no darker than f / 5.6, the points are sensitive up to -1 EV, however, I personally have AF on the central point also worked on superzoom with f / 6.3 in medium lighting conditions.

I did not like the autofocus itself. Considering that I mainly filmed the report on this camera - I often noticed that even the center point constantly scours in search of focus, refocuses, often there were misses that were not dependent on optics - the focus often flew to the background, and not to the photographed object. For static scenes, the accuracy and tenacity of AF is enough for me, but for dynamic scenes this camera is hardly suitable, so I gave this camera to my mother and bought it myself Nikon D300s.

There is one interesting fact - I took it from a friend Nikon D5100 and Nikkor 35 / 1.8G AF-S DX and decided to compare the speed and accuracy of the AF on our cameras. D3500 with a small gap overtakes D5100 in speed and accuracy of AF, especially in Live View. The focus of focus is also slightly better than the old camera.

The burst speed of the camera is not very large - only 5 frames per second. This is enough for a leisurely shooting of portraits, flowers and twigs, even for reporting shooting this was enough for me. Unfortunately, I did not find information about the size of the camera buffer - but it was enough for me for about 4 seconds of continuous shooting in RAW with a Sony memory card with a recording speed of 90 MB / s. This buffer size is enough for amateur photography.

When focusing on the screen, you can use the entire coverage area of the frame to focus on contrast. With the whale AF-P Nikkor 18-55, the AF on the video works surprisingly well, focusing is fast and accurate, without yaw, as is characteristic of the Nikon CZK.

Nikon D3500

Nikon D3500

Photo and video quality, stabilization

The camera is capable of shooting in a compressed 12-bit RAW size of 24 MP, or video 1920x1080 with a frequency of 60 fps in progressive scan for no more than 20 minutes per 1 clip. The quality of both the photo and the video made me happy - for me the threshold of the working ISO both in the photo and in the video is 3200, this is enough for sequential shooting and printing up to A3, as well as for viewing on a TV or monitor. The nature of the noise is a bit aggressive, as if it was "torn", not like the noise from old cameras on CMOS or CCD. The ISO range is from 100 to 25.600, but above 6400 I do not recommend going up - the image will already be too noisy and blurry. Color rendering in RAW at low ISOs is good, pleasing to the eye, skinton is not distorted. ISO values are selected only after 1 stop: 100-200-400-800, etc., intermediate values (for example, 160 or 1200) cannot be set with manual sensitivity selection, they can be selected by the camera when working with Auto ISO.

When using some modern lenses, the camera itself can adjust chromatic aberration and distortion, however, this only works when shooting in JPEG. It is not indicated anywhere which lenses are supported, but most likely this is all AF-P optics. At least my AF-P DX Nikkor 18-55mm / 3.6-5.6 VR, which went like a whale lens to the camera, was supported.

Stabilization with the aforementioned whale lens works very well - I got clear shots taken from my hands at shutter speeds of up to 1 second at 18 mm and 1/5 second at 55 mm. On video, stabilization works a little worse, but still pretty good. Unfortunately, the camera has neither electronic stabilization, nor a microphone port in return for the built-in monaural - therefore, I do not recommend using the camera for at least some serious video recording.

Exposure metering, white balance

If you carefully look at the photographs at the end of the text, you can see how the camera “cools” during Auto BB in daylight among the snow. This defect is quickly corrected by one of the presets. white balance in the camera or when processing RAW, however, is still not very nice. In addition, the sensor BB afraid of orange and violet lighting - when I was shooting a disco, orange, violet and green spotlights shone. None of the pictures were normal white balance, part had to be converted to b / w, part took quite a lot of time to select the necessary parameters.

exposure The camera works well. However, it is not ideal - frames sometimes skip on the same examples when the camera underexposed the frame by about 2 / 3-1 steps for unknown reasons. I do not exclude that this could be my mistake. Overall sensor exposure works good.

Like all amateur DSLRs, autoexposure does not work when shooting on lenses without a microprocessor - these include all manual lenses of Nikon and other manufacturers. To shoot on manual optics, you need to switch to M mode and set all the settings except white balanceby hand. It is very good that the LV mode immediately displays the resulting exposure - you can change the parameters not by typing, but focusing on the screen. In addition, it is much more convenient to focus.

Nikon D3500

Nikon D3500

Work with flashes, battery and other little things

The camera has a built-in flash - "frog". It almost always rises in auto mode, but I do not use it. Minimum excerpt 1/200 second sync, FP high-speed sync mode not. When using the built-in flash with large lenses, the shadow at the bottom of the frame is visible. For example, Sigma 17-50 / 2.8 OS even without a lens hood at any focal length gives a shadow at the bottom of the frame. This does not happen with a whale lens.

I want to note the great survivability of the battery - the site claimed 1550 frames, but I squeezed more than 2500 frames of reporting from AF with stabilization, without using a flash. The battery holds the charge very well both in the photo and in the video, even in the cold. Here Nikon did his best.

The memory card compartment only holds one card SD. SDHC, SDXC, UHS-I supported. The compartment lid began to give an unnoticeable play after about six months of using the camera - but this is most likely my fault, since the camera is not designed for the same pace and frequency of filming as mine.

The camera has Bluetooth, which allows you to synchronize time with a smartphone, record in EXIF geolocation and transfer pictures to the phone. The function is not particularly useful, since the data transfer rate is quite low, one JPEG frame as FINE and 24MP in size is transmitted for about 4 minutes; You cannot transfer video or RAW.

Sample Photos

Conclusion, impressions

In fact, Nikon D3500 - brainchild of marketers. The camera has good potential, but for the price at which I bought it in October 2019, when the camera just went on sale (550 cu) and at which it is sold now (about 480 cu) - it’s easier to take something like used D5600, D7100, they have more functionality, although they are outdated, and no worse than the image quality. D3500 - A good amateur DSLR with excellent photo and video quality, a large battery supply, good body and ergonomics, but an unreasonably high price.

At first it is written that the case is the same and then begins that it is different in everything

First, “more than 32.000 frames in 9 months of use”
And then “I bought it in October 2019”

    ....

    • notapic

Bought in October 2019, then sold
The cases are similar in appearance, size and ergonomics, but they have a slightly different coating. So the new D3500 looks similar to the D5500 and the D3400.

    • Vladimir

The d3500 has a different grip, it is deeper and much more convenient than the 3400, the buttons were moved under the right hand and set a normal screen. Otherwise, it's still the same d3300 in the brain.

Video shot by me (the author of the review) on this DSLR:
    https://vk.com/wall-170842038_471
I do not pretend to cinema, I was shot for a long time, spontaneously and without a plot, I just diversified my activity a little.

  • notapic

And one more video shot on the same DSLR, but more recent and, as I think, more interesting in the picture and plot: https://vk.com/wall-170842038_495
If you want to criticize, then criticize, but do not forget that I am not a professional either in photography or in video, and I do not pretend to have superb ratings of my work.

  • UstasFritZZZ

I understand that the weather is the same everywhere now ... but at least I took a couple of photo examples on a sunny day. And then sheer grayness and despondency.

    • notapic

Could you give me a sunny day? I had a camera for 2 days, during which I had to have time to shoot what I needed.
By the way, in the comments, I threw off 2 links to videos that I shot in the summer on this camera. There is the coveted sun - and if you want, you can open a group in VK, there are enough photos on sunny days.

    • Iskander

And I liked the rider. Who is it? What is this city?

      • Vladimir

And I know :) Salavat Yulaev in Ufa. In summer, he is prettier, of course. Thanks to the author for the review.

        • Iskander

I thought so roughly (either from Siberia, or from Mongolia). Thanks:)

  • Denis

the camera is new, and the matrix is already all smeared (5th line, left frame)
on some frames the optics are foggy, everything is cloudy)
and the colors of the new AF-P lenses are gray, no matter what they say. with CCD matrix and 18-55 or any camera with 16-85 lens - everything will be more colorful

    • notapic

Nothing was fogging. This is the picture Jupiter-9 gives on an open diaphragm, set through an adapter M42-Nikon F with a lens

      • Denis

        understandably. I thought everywhere 18-55

    • Igor

"With a CCD matrix and 18-55 or any camera with a 16-85 lens - everything will be more colorful"

What prevents just spinning saturation in the color profile? They are as if edited directly inside the camera.
And if you shoot in raw, it will not be difficult to screw up the color to the desired result. Raw is what you need.

      • Denis

someone likes it when they add saturation in the editor. in my opinion it only gets worse

        • Vladimir

If you're so big on color, then buy Dan Margulis's "The Classic Guide to Color Grading". And make yourself a heel of profiles / presets to your liking. Reading one little book will give you an understanding of how to make the colors the way you want, and not how the manufacturer has laid in their profiles. You can also read Itten's book about the peculiarities of color perception and color compatibility.

  • Igort

The case is the same, but the case is different. Something here hurts the eye.

    • notapic

It is, in essence, the successor to the D3400 - but the materials of the case cover are different, the arrangement of the buttons has been changed, which made the camera visually more similar to the D5500 than to the previous D3400. So yeah, the case is both this and not.

  • Sergei

boring description, boring stories and frames. the resource has lost what distinguished it from others

    • notapic

In this case, I expect constructiveness from you. If you so want to find fault - then compare most of the reviews here, at least by the number of points and words in the text under consideration.
I took photographs more technical than artistic - to show the real work of the camera at high ISO, lens distortion at a wide angle, etc. Artistic shots with processing do not reflect the real abilities of the technique, there you can draw a picture of a professional full-frame from a photo from a cheap smartphone. But this will no longer reflect the real situation, noise level, etc.

  • Vlad

“The brainchild of marketers” is absolutely true, there is nothing to add.

  • Igor

    "The same building"
In the D3500, for the first time in its existence, the 3XXX line has greatly changed the design of the case.

"The design of the case has become more solid"
In the sense of? He's the same as you said. Keep in mind: design is not only about color and texture. Shape, dimensions, arrangement of elements, materials are also design.

"The camera does not keep its balance on a flat surface and" bites "the front edge of the lens on the surface."
A doubtful flaw, because on any camera at least 90 percent of the lenses will not match the height of the carcass. It would be a drawback if the lens were not removable. But alas.

“I thought that at least the microphone, sync contact and bayonet would flood - but the snow melted, then it froze, but nothing happened to the camera at all.”
The Nikonov's most vulnerable place from moisture is the release button and the on / off lever. Do not abuse such exploitation).

"Nikon D3500 - the brainchild of marketers"
Such loud statements should be supported by arguments and examples of NEW cameras, and not used ones, otherwise, according to this logic, any new device is a “brainchild of marketers”.

"But at an unreasonably high cost."
Compared to what? Only Canon 1300D and 2000 / 4000D are cheaper than it on the market. The first one is already morally outdated, the second two are a refarb of old cameras in new cases with very low quality materials and greatly reduced functionality. So which camera is worth the price for this money?

    Enough constructive?

    • notapic

      1) I held both the D3400 and the D3500 - I'll say that tactilely they are quite similar, even in the hand they are about the same.
      2) It has become more impressive outwardly - and yes, relying even on your words about the location, shape and dimensions - the buttons on the left side are shifted (in general, the location of almost all controls is the same as in the same D5500, which is a higher class)
      3) The camera barely holds horizontally with a whale lens. Why is this a flaw? The camera can no longer be put on the surface to take a long exposure shot. D5100, D3300, D7100, who visited me, normally keep balance with whales. It is a pity that the company scored on this.
      4) I just cited this example to say that the camera does not have protection, however, it holds back such tests quite well. But more I tried not to allow this, now I have a protected D300s - it doesn’t care about water, dust, cold or heat at all, even though it can chop nuts or heads.
      5) Among competitors in the same price category, sold now, there is Nikon D5300 - the price is $ 20-30 higher, but the user gets Wi-Fi, 39 AF points, a rotating screen and more convenient control from the body, an advanced menu. The same Canon EOS 200D has better video and AF in Live View, the price with the kit is the same, and there is also Wi-Fi, NFC, Bluetooth, matrix cleaning, 14-bit RAW, microphone output. The D3500 lacks all this, which costs about the same.
      6) For this price, you can buy used brand new, more advanced cameras like Canon EOS 7D, Nikon D5300-5500-5600, Sony A6000 - and all of these cameras have much more capabilities than this CZK - yes, new they are already difficult to find, but there are many offers with a range of 10000, 5000 and even less than 1000 frames - in fact, these are generally new cameras. So it's easier to either wait until the price continues to fall, or take a used one in a new state and get more functionality. I did so after this camera.

      • Igor

        1) But it was about design, and it is different.
        3) Any desktop tripod for 700+ rubles can easily solve this problem, and immediately with all the optics, and not just with 18-55, or if you are perverted, some kind of very light lens, such as a 35-ki or half-lens. And so any professional standard zoom such as Nikonovsky 17-55 2.8 will fill up any camera, like any large telephoto. And this camera was intentionally made as light as possible.
        5) I looked at the prices right now. I found the cheapest D5300 kit for 32990. With 200D kit the same price. The D3500 with the VR version of the lens can be bought for 27990, without VR - 26490. Body can be bought for 23990. That's a huge difference. Instead of a 200D with a dark 18-55, you can take a D3500 carcass and Nikon's DX 35 1.8 with Avito to it, and there will still be a couple of thousand rubles left.
        6) It is impossible to find a 7D with low mileage and in perfect condition, because this is a reportage camera used for weddings, no one in their right mind bought it for family photos and lying on the shelf. The videographers will have little mileage, but they don't smell like an ideal state. And there is already a morally outdated and very noisy matrix by modern standards, which is now being put into the most deshman 4000D. The functionality is great, but the image quality is noticeably worse, especially at high ISO. The D5300-5500-5600 don't have much more. For video, it’s easier to buy 200D for the money, and for photos, the microphone input and the rotary display is a usless one, and the D3500 has the same matrix.

    • Michael

Duc, but there are new cameras that are not the brainchild of marketers?)
I don’t see any differences in the work of cameras released over the last ten years.

      • Vladimir

Because the manufacturers of DSLRs milked this cow, to the last. And now, when mirrorless people buy more willingly, there is neither the strength nor the desire to break their lineup with new cool models. More or less, the d850 is knocked out of this series, but even that without normal autofocus on LV did not reach.

  • Oleg

    50 shades of grey :)

  • Michael

    Arkady, typo:
"The camera is capable of shooting in 12MP compressed 24-bit RAW, or video."
The word photo is clearly missing.

    • notapic

It seems to me that it is quite logical that there is no RAW video in the camera. 12-bit RAW in the size of 24 megapixels meant a photo - video in MP is not measured, and in equal measure only top-end mirrorless cameras, sharpened for this, can shoot it.

      • Michael

Is logical. But the sentence with the word photo will be certain)
Like: "the camera is capable of taking photos ... and video ..."

        • notapic

However, you have a share of your truth, and I have. Next time I will take into account the specifics, it’s good that they noticed this.

  • DM

And I like my d3200, I carry it with me everywhere, I do not mind. Full frame (D610) is increasingly staying at home (weight, dimensions, extra attention). All the same, it’s more correct to invest in optics and then you can already work wonders.

    • Michael

It is a pity that optics under DX are not released much = (

  • BB

I only held the three thousandth series in my hands, but there were no special questions about the AF D5100. The focus points are not enough - yes, but the accuracy and tenacity in average conditions - no. It is clear that in comparison, for example, with the D7100, the AF is weaker and slower, but on the whole it suits. Perhaps it also depends on the lens: my workhorses are 18-105, 18-140 and 70-300 / 4,5-5,6G

PS I wonder why all of a sudden the company decided to radically cut the management, for the sake of compactness (although in width it is the same as 3400 and 3100)?
... this stupid LV lever in the D5100 never liked - talentless use of the lever, IMHO. It is much more logical to use it in the D3100

    • Victor

I completely agree about the lever.

  • Iskander

The menu in Nikon is stupid, but in tride :)

    • BB

      you just haven't seen Sonya's menu ...

      • Iskander

        Chur me, chur!

        • Vladimir

Sony has crammed as much on their menu as there are not even all professional nicknames. Focus picking-yes please, a zebra that shows overexposures when shooting not only turns on, but also adjusts. And this is without restriction on the carcass segment, even in the relatively cheap a6000 it is.

          • Vladimir

Plus customization of buttons and fn menus. And in the new cameras, they thought of making a "favorite", where you can shove all the frequently used functions and generally not climb into the main menu (yes, yes, I know that Canon and Nikon have been doing this for a hundred years, but on my a7 of the first generation this no).

  • Dim

At the D5200 and D3300 itself, it seems that even with the HDR turned off, the camera tries to draw shadows, while even at ISO 100 in the photo with contrasting scenes, I notice noise in the shadows. Wildly annoying is the low synchronization time of 1 \ 200, if it were like on D40 1 \ 500, then, apparently, it would be too bold according to the sellers. One joy, the long-suffering Sigma 30 1: 1,4, normally worked on the D5200, as it is not strange.

    • Michael

Come on, d-lighting is on - it draws shadows

    • Michael

And the synchronization time for all cameras + is like that. D40 is more likely an exception. For canon, this is traditionally 1/250, for pentax 1/180, for Nikon 1/250 in advanced 1/320 models.

      • Dim

Yes, I’m just in contrast with the D200 and D300 with their 1/320, it seems that the numbers do not differ much here and there, and in conditions where there is no fast synchronization on D3 ***, D5 *** any increase is a big plus.

        • Dim

          Yes, D-lighting is on. Thanks!

      • Iskander

I have a 100D and a 600D 1/200. Kapets, the flash impulse lasts thousandths of a second, is it really so difficult to allow the shutter speed to be set faster? (this is me to the manufacturers). I tried to freeze a drop of rain at night with a flash, so no, some comets are obtained. Infuriates! Even in Smena-8M 1/250, and in Zenith even shorter!

        • Oleg

It is assumed that the flash is mainly used for portraiture when no one is moving fast. And for special shooting you need to take special equipment.

An approximate calculation of freezing raindrops (I do not pretend to be accurate).

The diameter of a raindrop with normal precipitation is 0,5 mm.
The average speed of such drops is 5 m / s.
          So if
          - impulse 1 sec, we get a 5-meter drop path during this time
          - impulse 1/5 sec - 1 meter drop will pass
          - impulse 1/500 sec - 1 cm
          - impulse 1/5000 sec - 1 mm

It turns out that the impulse should be somewhere in the region of 1/5000 sec, so that a drop of 0,5 mm diameters would go only 1 mm and generally look frozen in the frame. Something like this.

It's simple: the sync delay (BC) is the minimum possible constructive exposure time that can be fulfilled by a mechanical shutter when the frame window is FULLY opened. At faster shutter speeds, the frame window is never fully open. For example, if you set a shutter speed of 1/400 s at (BC 1/200), the following will happen: the first curtain will start moving, opening the frame window and after covering half the vertical distance of the frame window (in the case of a lamellar shutter, as on Nikon or Kenon ) the second curtain will “catch up” with it. Thus, the frame window will not be completely open, however, technically, we get half the amount of light that hits the matrix or film. Shorter exposures result in a further reduction of the exposure slit, i.e. the second curtain begins to catch up with the first one even earlier. Hence the problem of synchronization with the flash comes out - it is impossible to expose the entire frame with one flash pulse, because only part of the frame will be highlighted. As for the Zeniths and the like, there is much more sun. For example, at Zenit-E - 1 / 30s, because there is a focal plane shutter, which is much slower than the modern lamellar.

At Zenith, 1/250 sync speed actually

          • Ya-alex

            In which?

            • Michael

Perhaps I just don’t remember the opposite of what figure the letter X stood. Maybe it was less. Zenith-TL seems to be called

            • Michael

I wrote to the fact that FIG on Zenith sync speed is shorter than on modern Nikon Canon

              • Arkady Shapoval

                On film Zeniths usually 1 / 30-1 / 60. The last Zenit-KM 2005 already 1/125

        • B. R. P.

In Smena there is a central shutter, synchronization over the entire range of shutter speeds, in most Zenits - 1 \ 30, Kiev-19 - 1 \ 60. 1 \ 250 in Nikon FM2, for example.

        • Vladimir

The flash momentum is very uneven, that is, the first fraction of a second of light is a lot, and then a little. To make a quick synchronization time, you need to have a shutter that pulls the curtains faster. (Shorter than the synchronization time for the shutter slit runs through). A good shutter costs money, it’s not without reason that in amateur cameras the minimum shutter time is 1/4000, and in the remaining 1/8000

“When the camera just went on sale (550 USD) and for which it is being sold now (about 480 USD) - it's easier to take something like a used D5600, D7100”
More likely not easier, but more reasonable. It’s easier to take a new camera, fewer problems when buying.

    Thank you for advertising yourself.
If you used different lenses to view the camera, incl. and manual, it would probably be advisable to indicate their names on the posted pictures, or at least indicate this in the text (as was done at the beginning of the attached video).
On some pictures (7,8,12,21) the impression of specks of dust on the matrix is really. Although I understand that at such apertures as indicated, these are not dust particles, but most likely it was snowing. Do not take pictures when it is snowing. And learn to shoot it correctly, and generally take pictures correctly, then there will be no such greyness.
And forgive me, your pictures are neither artistic nor technical, especially the last two. And to shoot for a Nikon camera review with a manual through a Chinese adapter with a corrective lens is generally a tough thing)). Aerobatics))
Learn the materiel and the theory of photography, learn from authors such as this https://radojuva.com/2016/03/sigma-150-2-8-macro-dg-hsm/ write reviews and take pictures.
Good luck! And do not be offended. The first pancake for many comes out lumpy)

SLR cameras are bought to use a viewfinder, this series does not actually have it, it is so small physically that it is only one test to use it ... the files of the third series are also worse than the 7000 series, the only plus of these cameras is their ultra-compactness and low weight. bu D7100 now costs about 350 dollars, and that says it all ...

    • Denis

much less than the D3200? when I replaced the D5100 with the D7100, and when I used the D5100 back, I did not feel any discomfort. brought focus where necessary, pressed a button and that's it

  • Igor

    Thank you for the article!

'the button for activating the flash has moved to the front side' - the button has moved to the rear panel after all (on the front panel - bayonet).
Regarding the backlash of the memory card compartment: on my D5100, the mileage is 127k (since 2011), on some days the compartment was raped several dozen times. There are no backlashes.
And autofocus was fine with me. Of course, on the D7100 / 7200 it is significantly better.

at the expense of the battery - nonsense. you could not squeeze 2500 frames. it is not physically real. and the declared 1550, he also does not issue. with all power-consuming settings turned off, using only single-frame photography, Nikon d3500 produces only about 1000 frames. all the talk about fifteen hundred is marketing. convention. it's like with a laptop, when they say 7 hours of operation, they are silent that they mean idle mode.

    • BB

If you turn off photo viewing (and the screen eats a lot), shoot in series, I think you can squeeze 1500 for sure

      • Nicholas

everything that can be disabled, of course. and the battery is new and the camera is new and everything works fine. and was bought precisely because of the promised 1500 frames. otherwise Fuji TX23 or 30 with additional batteries would be bought.

      • Nicholas

        typo X-T20 *

    • Sergei

I easily squeezed 2000 frames out of this camera.

      You are doing something wrong.

  • Sergei

On the 8th photo from the back (where the tree is), the sky is in stripes (posterized). I think this is because of the 12 bit color. Amazingly, for example, I have never seen this on Canon 1100d, there is an assumption that there are 14 bits. I think that is why Canonies are less colorful than Nikon's classmates, but the latter are sharper.

    • Jury

The file size is 127 KB, most likely because of this

    • Hamlet

Is this a joke? In fact, 12 bits cannot be distinguished from 14 bits, except that during processing there will be more type of information (not noticeable by eye). And artifacts are a consequence of JPG compression.
