Works on Helios-44 2/58

Helios-44 The 13-petal lens is not the first manual lens I've got my hands on ... Tair-11, Jupiter 37 и INDUSTR-61-L / Zthen appeared Helios-44-2but a completely unsuccessful instance and I was almost disappointed in 44th Helios Series, but having studied the descriptions, comparisons and examples of work, I decided to try my luck again. My choice fell on Helios-44 2/58 in a white case with 13 aperture blades and M39 thread (looks like that) I used it in conjunction with the camera Nikon D810 through two adapter rings: one thin transition from M39 to M42 and the second usual without a lens and chip from M42 to the Nikon F mount. And after the first test I was delighted! Already on raw sources the picture was simply amazing! Soft around the edges and at the same time sharp in the center, even on a fully open aperture! Everyone's favorite bowls are just super! Just what you need for creativity and artistic macro! For my comparatively small experience while shooting in the macro genre, I tried many different models of both Helios and other manual lenses, both Soviet and non-German (for example, the same Carl Zeiss Biotar 2/58 T, essentially the prototype Helios-44 ), but not a single lens fell in love with itself like this one anymore!

The thirteen-petalled Helios-44 is a great tool. The 00… versions are impressively sharp, although they have a highly distorted color in the warm side due to the use of bright blue enlightenment. I once had just such a lens. Subsequently, I switched to version 000 ... with replaced front and rear lenses for the optics from MC Helios-44m-7, which has the usual sharpness for Helios-44, but neutral color rendition and somewhat better good contrast in different shooting conditions.

    • Vladimir

Very accurately stated. I have both of these lenses, comparing ...

  • Sergei

A kind of impressive macro from Helios-44.
Very diverse compositions from a relatively simple lighting solution to a very sophisticated one.
But it looks good and is remembered.
Although I did not notice a significant difference between 13 and 8 petals. Are the rounds in the out-of-focus area a little rounder in a number of pictures ...
Much more interesting is the author’s lighting decisions on the composition of the frame.

  • Leonid

Oh, this ubiquitous brown tint ...

    • Rodion

It also appears in him naturally, by the way. If not brown, then yellow at least.

    • SashOK

"You talk like it's something bad"
(I don’t remember where the quote came from).

  • B. R. P.

A lot of very interesting shots, thanks.

  • Vlad

When I got a 44white, the rest of the 44ths somehow went to the shelf by itself, not that the “white” differs favorably from their brothers Helios 44 in the picture, but the 13-blade diaphragm allows you to maneuver advantageously when shooting.
Nice glass and I like it!

    • Alexander

Strange bokekhi, as if cut from below.

      • Vlad

The bokeshka is the most natural, no gluing, no hireiok, no photoshop here!

      • Rodion

So, that means that the light was distributed on a pimply film)

  • Maria

    Thank you!
You look and once again understand that you probably should not torture such lenses with alterations. After all, portrait and macro are their niche. Although I’m not quite sure whether the quality of the images worsens the alteration, the quality of the pictures is the same as the lens or not (it would also be interesting to know).

    • Vlad

Somehow I reworked at infinity on Nikon 44m-6 and noticed that twisting the rear lens does not affect sharpness and other parameters, but the torsion effect worsens, or even disappears, in short, all that’s the charm of Heliosov is lost. I advise.
There is another method that is more complicated, I have 44m-4 redone so already under the Nikon mount, everything is there, but is it worth the candle and do you need infinity on Helios?
I think not, these glasses are wonderful for completely different purposes.

      • Maria

Yes, I also think about it)

In fact, to be honest, I clicked landscapes and a group of people not near a couple of times. It is especially difficult at night with him, so the truth is yours.

I myself would hardly have started doing this at all, if only to carry it to the master.

      • Alexander

Why unscrew the lens in 44m-6? After all, it is very easily altered to Nikon, it is enough to replace the threaded flange with a regular adapter for 60r. If suddenly a shortage persists, then loosen the 3 screws securing the lens block and slightly deepen it.

        • Vlad

It’s not so! Easy?)) This is the second method, in addition to the adapter, you still need to cut plenty of it and build a spacer ring.
Have you ever remade something yourself? I doubt it.

          • Alexander

If he had not remade himself, he would not have spoken. Nothing to cut there, absolutely. You just need to drill 4 holes in the adapter with a chamfer, anyone can handle this. Yes, a gasket is needed, because lens plane without flange with a step. It is perfectly cut from the lid of a jar of cotton buds. You can also make a ring-casing, which is placed between the diaphragm control ring and the adapter. It turns out this small gap due to the lack of a skirt at the adapter. I made it out of some kind of plastic ring, very successfully lying in the nightstand.

      • Ilya

Helios lenses of the 44mX family can be converted to infinity for Nikon very simply - by replacing the back cover with M42 thread with a Chinese M42-Nikon F adapter. Namely replacements. You'll have to figure out how to lock/adjust the aperture jumper, but you don't have to experiment with the optical design. Nezenitovsky 77m4 also gets infinity after such manipulations.

  • Igor

Question. Macro rings were used here, probably? Or does this Helios and carcass immediately give the effect of such a macro?

    • Anastasia

Used on some frames, not even one. For example, a portrait of a night moth, 3 rings were used

  • Irina

All photos made by Helios, I like. Just super, look superb.

  • Igor K

The photos are beautiful. But here the merit of the photographer is more than the technical characteristics of the lens. :)
    Thank you!

    • Anastasia

Igor, of course you are right, doing macro art photography, not encyclopedic photography, post-processing of the photo is of greater importance in the perception of the final result. But you are wrong that the beauty of these photographs is due solely to post-processing. Yes, all photos have been color-corrected, some photos have filters applied, where stacking is used, but all this does not change the overall picture of the original photo. Believe me, I realized this from my own experience, I used many different lenses in my work ... why would I have it then? )) Well, if I had one of the simplest, then it would be a matter of photoshop :)) But it's not that simple :)
Tell me which photo you have the most doubt about in terms of the post-processing used, which in your opinion changed the technical work of the lens to something unusual for it, and I will show you the raw source without processing, and maybe you will change your mind;)

      • B. R. P.

Dear Anastasia. If possible, show the source of any of the photos of the lizard on the mushroom. Thanks.

        • Anastasia

I'll throw it at home in the evening) for example, many people think that the rain in the photos is superimposed on the texture, but no and the rain is not superimposed, the atomizer, that's all miracles)

        • Anastasia

What kind of photos with a lizard are you interested in? there are several with a lizard just ...

        • Anastasia

aaa I saw everything ... any ... ok now I'll throw it

        • Anastasia

I had to reduce it by 3 times in order to comply with the requirements of the photo for upload, but here it is the original as it was shot, the raw source

          • B. R. P.

            Thank you, Anastasia.

          • Michael

Of course, I’m arrogant) Can I still have a frog No. 3?)))

            • Anastasia

Color correction and a filter were applied to simulate the setting sun, but as you can see on the source this was originally intended, for this purpose a flashlight and a bottle of dark glass were used.

            • Anastasia

something the photo did not attach

            • Anastasia

apparently the size was large, reduced

              • Michael

                Thank you!

          • a guest

This is a recognizable pale soapy unnecessary helios. The gallery of hours-long drawings in Photoshop is interesting in some way, but why? Now it is fashionably true ... And what's the difference then what to shoot? At least for a hole from a tin can and draw what you want ..

            • Arkady Shapoval

The trouble is that you won't get such pictures for a hole from a tin can, even with strong post-processing. By the way, the author of the works has repeatedly shown that the basis of the photo is a natural live subject. As far as handling is concerned, it is only mostly toning. Therefore, your remark about "drawings" in this case is completely incomplete

        • Anastasia

embellished with flower blossoms, cropped, but all in essence

      • Igor K

Anastasia, this was by no means reproached to you, but vice versa. Well, it seems to me that you will remove the beauty on any lens. :)
In general, of course, it would be interesting to look at the source.

        • Anastasia

Beauty, yes, maybe, but not all lenses allow you to technically accomplish what initially appears in your head as an idea) That is, of course, the photo will turn out pretty and on another lens, for example on Vega 11u it will be more detailed throughout the frame, but fairy tales no longer it will turn out, it will give a completely different picture. Therefore, the lens is selected exclusively for certain purposes.

        • Anastasia

          attached source codes above :)

      • Anonymous

Why do you need to prove something to someone? This is a typical trolling not versed in the topic, in order to once again humiliate the optics of the USSR, no matter how good the examples are.
And it’s clear, the author knows how to make a high-quality picture, that is, not the first year in photography, and Helios is used for a reason.

        • Arkady Shapoval

They already wrote on Facebook that this is the merit of d810 :)

          • Roman

Silver bullet. Everything is attributed to merit, except for taste, talent and efficiency.

          • Anastasia

She, the "masterpiece" button is included, but what about :))

            • Arkady Shapoval

Well, at least they did not write that this is the merit of a memory card, which is predisposed to recording good shots. And the more expensive and larger the memory card, the more and easier masterpieces are written there :)

              • Roman

Those suffering from audiophilia will definitely specify for the cables.

              • Anastasia

Right! Without a card, generally anreal !!! The whole point is in the map :)))

        • Roman

From the point of view of optical characteristics Helios - that the fortieth, that the forty-fourth - a mediocre lens that has a number of disadvantages. This is a given. By today's standards, Soviet photographic equipment is terrible. How mediocre are most manual lenses from the 70s and 90s. BUT! A person with an artistic flair is able to use these flaws to the advantage of taking pictures - somewhere softness is suitable, somewhere color rendition, somewhere twisted bokeh. Sharpness can be raised artificially (if necessary), color rendition can be straightened (also if necessary). Therefore, we once again state tediously: task -> skills -> means. The funds are even tertiary, not secondary. It makes no sense to put them at the forefront and consider them in isolation from the process.

    • Roman

Here the merit of the photographer, as elsewhere, in the first place. There will be no miracle, the lens will not help. Anyone will not help if there is no one to shoot (and sometimes nothing).

  • Trueash

Recently I had the opportunity to compare my 44m, brushed and sawn with Nikon, and Nikon 50 / 1.8D. On impressions, Helios gives a softer, low-contrast picture; Nikon is more “correct” - but boring.

    • Maria

very often I catch myself thinking that before the lenses seemed to themselves give out something artistic.
Now any artistic technique is also achievable, IMHO, but you will have to conjure more with the light in the frame.

  • Oleg

A bit off topic, but close. I like watching on YouTube DRTV - a test of the photographer with a cheap camera. A lot of water, but in general it's interesting how the pros shoot with all sorts of barbie cameras and other toys.

PS It's very good that there were pictures “before”, and not just “after”. Now you can clearly see what kind of picture you can get with such and such a lens and how it looks after processing.

Composition of the author’s processing: crop, LUT, contrast, tonal contrast, color tinting, a bit of dodge-n-bern, clone bokeh.

  • SashOK

Cool macro photo. No, just WONDERFUL macro photo!
Question to the author: are you shooting it all directly in nature, or are you making compositions at home (or in the studio) and are shooting there in a calm environment?
Okay, if there are little twigs, flowers, but you can't just make lizards and frogs and insects pose ...

    • Anastasia

Thanks! Always in nature. I’m looking for a suitable composition from what I see under my feet, it can be supplemented with light details from available tools (a flashlight, a garland, as for example was used in a photograph with a toad, the source of which I attached above). Frogs and frogs can pose for a long enough time, if you hold them and warm them in warm hands before that, at least for the time that they sit quietly (and this happens up to a minute), it’s enough to take a lot of shots (I’ll attach the photo of the backstage of the photo shoot with the frog below , showed it already on fb). It’s much more difficult with insects, it’s quite difficult to persuade them to pose in one position, so you have to resort to tricks, for example, ants and ladybugs like sweets, so sweetened with vodka water is a wonderful treat for which they can stop for a few seconds to feast on :) Sometimes it’s useful know the biorhythms of insects and use this to enable calm shooting. For example, moths are inactive during the day and can be safely removed in a sleeping state. (I’ve taken several night butterflies of different types in this way) Of course, if you disturb her very much, you will wake up and fly away anyway, but if you catch the take-off moment, you can also get a gorgeous shot :) How did I manage to catch this in the photos of the butterfly kind of Blue Order Ribbon on a mushroom wave. In the process of shooting, she began to be active and move around the mushroom and stretch her wings, so wonderful shots turned out :)

      • Alexander

Good time) as for me - your photos are perfect in a creative, author's idea of nature)) multiplied by a personal sensation of light and color. Respect and respect. Frogs, frogs, lizards - cold-blooded, with a variable temperature)) dryness for them increases activity))) cold - lowers)) they would be in the refrigerator before shooting) or do you tame them?)))

      • Dim

This photo and the original "lizard" should be added to the article. And change the name to, say, do a macro or something.

    • Anastasia

In general, there are some photos that were taken at home, not from those presented here, but in general, and shot with other lenses, these were snails and a spider-horse.

  • Vladimir

    Divine !!!
    Bb +++++

  • Alexander

For some reason, I am sure that here at least helios, at least arsat, even use specialized micro nikkor af-s and vr - there will be something the same, or different, but similar. Because in this selection of photographs there is no technorock ... only art. Creative, very, very staged, thoughtful, talented and therefore brought to perfection through the eyes of the author.
    Sincerely.

  • Victor

And can I ask about the secrets of such post-processing? Is this all done manually by standard Photoshop tools, or some third-party plugins?

  • Anastasia

Tsvet.korr usual tools fsh and camera equal, somewhere stamp and brush to clean the background, somewhere cropping, well, brightness, color. Balance, nothing special there and there is no processing
