Review on the classics from Nikon. Today I will write about my experience using the Nikkor 50 mm F1.8 lens. This version of the lens was produced between 1985 and 2005.

Compatible with all Nikon cameras. It AI-S lens. On older cameras, the lens can operate in automatic metering mode and transmits the aperture value.

I consider this lens, like many other old Nikkor, a real classic. At least on a film camera of his time, even on a modern DSLR, he looks irresistibly. This is an important aesthetic moment.

Here's an example of how this lens looks on the Nikon D600.

Here is an example of how this lens looks on Nikon D600.

Nikon has a lot of similar lenses and their prices do not bite. The lens is really compact and very light. What is surprising is that this real Nikkor is a bit lighter. Nikon Series E 50mm 1: 1.8 (MKII) [145 grams versus 155]. Fifty dollars are usually the smallest. From this we can conclude that this is one of the most compact and lightweight Nikkor lenses.

Technical specifications

Focal length - 50 mm
Maximum aperture - 1.8
MDF - 60 cm
Aperture - 7 non-rounded blades.
Filter diameter - 52 mm.
The mass of the lens is 155 grams.
The length is 36.5 mm.
Lenses have a proprietary multi-enlightenment.
The optical design is identical to the first Nikkor autofocus fifty dollars and Nikon E series lenses.

The lens is interesting in that it has light weight and good image quality. This is my very first fifty dollars on the Nikon system. Having bought it in due time for Nikon D90, I immediately appreciated the new features. I recommend buying a fast aperture after a whale lens. This will give you new opportunities for creativity. You can well get your hand on manual optics.

A few more photos of the appearance of the lens. Aperture makes nuts in bokeh.

For color, I took a few more shots with a Nikon 1Dx camera. Pictures from it are also in the gallery.

Gallery of photos. All photos were taken at different times and on different cameras. The shooting was carried out at different settings of image profiles. From this color are significantly different.

I want to bring two frames shot at 16 mm and 50 mm. Pay attention to how much the over-width of 16 mm distorts. The strongest difference between a portrait and a funny cartoon photograph is clearly visible here. Sometimes I like to take portraits for 16 and even 14 mm for fun? with a full frame. Maybe someone else shares this fun experience?

Sample photos (200 photos from 7 cameras!)

Examples are made on 7 different cameras: Nikon D800, Nikon D600, Nikon D7000, Nikon D100, Nikon D90, Nikon D1x и Samsung NX10.

I see this lens as a good budget wagon in full frame. Suitable for a portrait, but there are options for lenses with bokeh (blur) more interesting, with a large focal length and a higher aperture.

Write your questions in the comments. I got a pretty solid equipment list and if you want to know my opinion or consult, I will answer your questions.

  • Vyacheslav

    Thank you.

  • Oleg

It is not the super-width that “distorts”, but the laws of geometry. If the pictures were taken from one point, the proportions of the face would be transferred to them in the same way.

    • Arkady Shapoval

It seems to me that a 16mm shot for fish.

      • Roman

Yes, it looks like a fish on a full frame. The super-wide, of course, has promising distortions, but it does not oppress the prospect, it just pulls the edges.

        • Alexey Ovoshchnikov

Yes, the full name of the lens is Sigma MF Fisheye 16 mm f / 2.8 Filtermatic MC.

    • Alexey Ovoshchnikov

We are talking about photography and here specifically distorts the lens. So physics is everywhere in our lives) Even if you take pictures from one point, the distortion on the 16mm lens will still not go anywhere. Simply, it will be a full-length portrait. A caricatured, very elongated portrait in this and a trick.

      • Oleg

Perhaps, but in those pictures that are attached to the review, the difference in angle eliminates the distortion of the optical system itself.

        • Alexey Ovoshchnikov

Believe the distortion from 16 mm on a full frame (and on a crop) nothing levels out. She will always be either strong or very strong. Then I will review this 16mm lens and look.

          • Arkady Shapoval

Distortion can be completely zero by 16 mm, with modern lenses it is within a few percent. The distortion of the fish eye lens is not initially corrected, this is its chip.

  • Basil

The “view on the lens” sounds uncomfortable. Correct "lens view"

    • Maria

Neither is stylistically very good. It's just that “lens view” is more commonly used.

  • Alexander

    A little expensive.
Helios-81N will not yield, especially in terms of price / quality ratio. Hole 1,8 and 2 - not much difference.

    • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

But the difference in workmanship and picture quality is great. After I bought the first nikkor, I will never take this Soviet slag

  • Serhiy Todoriuk

Jahlive bokeh, as in autofocus D version. Well, with a sweep of optically it’s sound of bad weather, like all the optics of Nikon.

  • Vitaly P

The question is not the topic - who knows how the D100 implements the Auto ISO function? There are only “on” and “off” in the menu, but when this function is enabled, the unit still shoots only at the selected ISO value.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Nikon D100 only supports function in S and M. modes

      • Vitaly P

        Thank you!

  • Alexander

Thanks for the review. For a long time I want such a collection. Tell me, where can I get it?
Helios may not concede, but on my copy the very smallness of infinity is not enough ..

    • Ilya

I understand that this is almost unrealistic, I myself tried to search on Avito, but I found a maximum of fifty dollars with an aperture of 1,4 (AI-S)

    • Ilya

can be found on ibei, but prices there are often exorbitant
This one has the minimum price, taking into account the delivery (delivery is free for this one, for the rest of the lenses on this site the delivery is on average about 4k rubles)

    • Artyom

Why do you need it? The focusing ring travel is small, the bokeh nuts are curved, the resolution is worse than that of the Yongnuo 50mm f1.8. Completely manual, and in addition, its lenses are prone to fungus.
      I'm really interested.

  • Vladimir

All the above photographs could have been taken with a normal zoom, it would have turned out no worse, a large aperture of 1,4 or 1,8 makes sense to use only in low light and to separate the subject from the background - portrait, subject, etc., at a small focal length distance

    • Alex

Yes, my iPhone doesn’t take much worse pictures... (just kidding)

  • Sergei Mikhailovich

This copy (which is in the photo in the review) was released for the American market (serial number starts with 4, plastic focus and aperture rings). This is the so-called second version of the “pancake”. The third is an E-series lens with single-layer coating and mediocre mechanics. And the most interesting was the first version, it was produced for the Japanese market. Serial numbers began with 2, the body was all metal with a rubberized focus ring. That is, the “pancake” was one in three versions. It's funny.
