Interesting ... I am the owner of the Tokina Macro 100 F2.8 D AT-X PRO, which has everything just fine: both with the constructive and with the quality of the displayed image. Actually, the interest in the question: what prompted Tokin to release an update to his macro frame?

For example, I am very sorry that the Nikon version did not add a built-in focus motor, they left the same old method of switching focus modes and generally did not significantly update the previous lens.
But if you look seriously, then they lowered the status of the lens from ATX-PRO to atx-i.
Yes, the logic is really not entirely clear. Everything remained virtually unchanged: the optical design, constructive, only slightly changed the appearance. The most significant change, as far as I can tell, is now a completely different box design: it was gray in a box, with a blue stripe, now just white with blue :)

Perhaps at least on the Canon version, autofocus is improved.
It is unlikely that they even did nothing sensible in the Firin 100mm Macro with autofocus - loud and slow, on a classic motor, like ATX-PRO for Canon.

I also have Tokin 100 / 2,8 macro ... the lens is wonderful and the point in updating it is practically nothing, without changing a very mysterious .... perhaps purely marketing, so that they don't forget :-))

Say it to Laowa with their ultra-wide-angle 15/4 macro or furious 24/14. Or Canon's Macro 65, which gives 100x magnification. Or a whole bunch of photographers taking beautiful XNUMXmm photos using stacking and macro lenses.
price, price, price respected :-)))) ... but if you want to have a bigger one - then extension rings or 2 or 3x focal magnifier between the camera or the lens :-))) really, the quality ...
new technologies are always cheap, of course, for manufacturers, not users, that is, in terms of prime cost, not retail cost. Sometimes it is even impossible to get hold of some parts that were previously produced by suppliers, but now they are no longer being produced. In addition, you always need to present to users that a new updated version of the product has been released, at least in a new design. Autofocus on the old Tokin 100mm Macro (which I have at the moment and consider it to be just a great lens, especially considering the price on the second-hand market - $ 200!) Really misses sometimes, and if it was slightly modified, then everything is just fine. Plus, shoppers get great glass at a reasonable price, especially when compared to modern brand counterparts with their draconian price tags. One more thing - the old versions of lenses have now turned into really old ones, that is, the prices for them may drop a little more, especially against the background of migration to mirrorless cameras.

Most likely this is the last modern autofocus lens, which will be with a Nikon aperture ring.
And who will prevent Nikon from releasing a separate series “for connoisseurs” even for Z with a ring, even if it is an electronic ring. After all, some Af-s have a diaphragm ring.
no one will interfere, but nobody will do a mechanical ring on auto-focus lenses. Tokina did in this macro-hundredth, as it is just the same old lens 20 years ago with a slightly new body.
All native af-s with aperture ring are very old lenses, there is not a single new one (they are all indicated here). The most recent of these (the “newest”) is the 400 Nikon ED AF-S Nikkor 1mm 2.8: 2006D II.
Useless lens. The same thing for new money, and even with a screwdriver for Nikon. Looks like it’s bad business with profit at the tokens once decided to sell one glass twice.
