Photographic equipment for rent

In the last couple of years, I quite often rent something or borrow photo equipment from my friends for a short while.

The idea of renting photographic equipment is not new, but now this topic is very relevant. Anyone can afford to touch quality photographic equipment. A professional can try something new, take an additional camera or lens for his daily shooting.

This article was written primarily under the impression that some Western photographers are moving to a new business model where photographic equipment is not at all an obstacle to getting good shots and where photographic equipment for rent has become part of the business model of a particular photographer. That is what can be discussed in the comments.

Disadvantages of photographic equipment for hire:

  1. The main drawback of rental equipment, I consider the lack of such services in small cities.
  2. Popular models of photographic equipment often badly worn and it is not known whether they will withstand the next thousand frames.
  3. Popular models of photographic equipment are quickly disassembled and it is not always possible to take exactly what you want.
  4. After shooting, I want to go straight home, and not bring the photographic equipment back to the service / office / friend.
  5. Time and money are spent on rent, which you need to lay in the general price tag of photography.
  6. New photographic equipment can change the current, long-verified process of obtaining good shots and make it take longer to dig into settings, RAW converters, processing methods, toning, etc.

A few small nuances that you should pay attention to when renting a camera:

  1. Make sure sRGB space is used. Very few people know how to work with Adobe RGB, and if you don’t immediately adjust the color space correctly, then it can be painfully painful to work with photos. I met several times that before me, users shot in Adobe RGB.
  2. Make sure that focus adjustment is turned off, or make sure that it is done correctly.
  3. Check if unnecessary text is specified in the comments. The same goes for specifying copyright for photographs. No one needs to in your photos in EXIF there was some Vasya Pupkin.
  4. Check the picture control mode and adjust it for yourself, first of all, if the shooting is in JPEG. From the past user, there may be some kind of twisted-eye preset twisted to the maximum.
  5. If possible, check such important settings as the range of auto ISO values and minimum shutter speeds, the auto focus mode, adjust sound alerts, etc.

From time to time I use the rental to understand whether or not to buy this or that technique, because it is one thing to review, even yours, Arkady. It’s quite another matter when you can make an impression yourself.
There was a tempting offer to buy the Nikkor AF-S 28mm 1.8G, but I hadn’t shot with wide-angle fixes before, and decided to take the same for a couple of days to test, fortunately, the price was around 100 UAH / day. Now this is my main lens in full frame.

    • BB

Tell me, in what city is there a rental?

      • Q12

        Kiev, https://photorent.kiev.ua/

        • San.Sanych

Tell me, is there any thread in Kiev photo-video salon / center that would come and how to hold several cameras in photo exhibitions in your hand, feel ergonomics?

          • Bogdan

I was in Paparazzi on Pushkinskaya - I liked it, I twirled the Olympus 12-40 in my hands, which I am thinking of buying. I advise you to check the availability of what interests you in advance.

    • Philip

And AF-S 28mm f / 1.4E is so generally a song. Perhaps the sharpest glass from the "okoloshirikov" in Nikon

  • Roman

sRGB / Adobe RGB - the color space of JPEG files, when shooting in RAW, you then choose what you want. Or the problem is that you focus on the image on the camera screen, and then you get not what you planned? But there are more nuances in the exposure, and not in color, it is difficult to affect the color during shooting. Especially in nature.

    • NEO

      1. The working space of the display system is sRGB, when viewed on the client's computer, the color “floats away”. The viewer displays in sRGB by default, and the AdobeRGB. The most deplorable result is carrots on their faces.
      2. Do all monitors support AdobeRGB? What to look at it correctly?
      3. The working space of 99% of photo laboratories for printing sRGB photos. Try feeding them AdobeRGB and get some
      4. If the workspace in Shop is sRGB by default, then you need to rebuild and adjust one to the other, while if the final product is sRGB, then there will still be losses when converting from AdobeRGB to sRGB.

These are the clever people who think that "a wider coverage of the color palette" will help them, just do not understand anything and then have even more problems with color.

      • Michael

When shooting in RAV, all of the above is not relevant) This is stated above

        • Roman

          People do not read what.

        • Just me

As far as I know. All the RAWs are then still converted to zhp and the converter (at least for the first time) will ask: what color space do you like to drive the photo into?

          • Roman

LATER. Therefore, when shooting in RAW, the choice of the target color space is not important, it only affects the final JPEG.

A normal CMS-enabled viewer uses the profile attached to the file, by default interpreting files without a profile as being in sRGB. And now even the T-stool VK has stopped cutting profiles when loading. So the problem of AdobeRGB / sRGB is no longer so dreadful. Conversions, conversions and losses always occur, let's start with the fact that your calibrated monitor also has its own ICC profile and the image in any color space is still converted by the CMS according to the scheme - xRGB -> XYZ -> RGB monitor. Distortion, of course, is introduced, especially if you convert a dozen times back and forth, but they are not that significant. Well, unless someone, as usual, photographs not plots, but dies filled with color, then yes.

          • Roman

            > it only affects the final JPEG

More specifically, on JPEG generated by the camera.

          • Arkady Shapoval

Typically, raw converters do not ask, they simply convert with what they have by default.

  • Anatoly

Rent is justified when buying and when money is not pecked by chickens, and it is not always possible to find $ 3000-5000. So scho maєm te, scho maєm. And we shoot for fun;)

    • BB

I did not understand you: when there is a lot of money, you can buy equipment. Rent is justified when money is scarce and you don’t need equipment every day.

      • Michael

Apparently the amount of the collateral was meant

    • Oleg

When the chickens do not really peck money, people will not even bother with any rent. I bought, say, Nikon D4s, I took pictures, I didn't like it ... I heard from someone that Canon is cooler - I bought 1D X Mark II, Nikon gave it to my mistress.

      • Pokemon

The last time I heard about such a quirk was from a Moscow municipal deputy from the cursed United Russia. The man quietly bought himself a new D810 (before the release of D850) and 24-70 / 2.8. But the camera turned out to be nepatsan and not cool, so I bought myself ... D5. And later he asked how she focuses if she does not have a backlight flashlight. I am ready to swear on the Bible in tseokvi that this is true. Just another deputy with a monthly income of 550k per month. Clean and white. Despite the fact that he honestly admits that his job is not dusty. And laughter and sin.

  • Oleg

But isn’t it easier to reset the camera settings and then configure only what you need? And do not worry about whether there are notes in the commentary or copyright.

    • Zhenya

Well, if some of the settings are unlikely to be very different for everyone, why should all of them be immediately reset to zero?)

  • Aries

I have seen several times that users have shot in Adobe RGB before me. …………….
this profile has a greater color range, it is preferable ..

    • Arkady Shapoval

Perhaps only one who does not know how to work with him will only worsen the situation.

  • R2D2

I often rent lenses. I calibrate on my carcass and take off, there are no problems.
300-500 UAH per day, and any problem is solved with focal. But there is no problem spreading $ 1500 so that this lens stands on a shelf, under 1-2 shootings per month.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Especially if it is a telephoto camera and when winter comes, and the main shooting is people.

  • Sergei

It makes no sense to rent whale and popular inexpensive lenses, designed for ordinary fans.
The amateur needs such lenses himself.
Renting is interesting primarily for beginners with a limited budget and for expensive lenses for responsible shooting.
The convenience of this service depends on the flexibility of the deposit - not every beginner pro has a free $ 1000 - $ 1500 for at least a couple of days. If the lenses of the client are accepted as collateral, then this greatly simplifies the matter.

    • Q12

NO. It has. Example: EF 50 Compact macro.

      • Roman

And what's the point in it? 1: 1 only with an adapter, which is not everywhere. Better than 100 mm, not even L.

        • Q12

As the owner of 100 macro, and 24-70 f4 is, I’ll say this: - I don’t use the scale you specified, from the word at all. I don't take off the ant's eye. I shoot textures and there for a panorama you need 8/10 frames with a scale of 1: 4. And for a small object compact macro is it.

          • Roman

Well, he is very specific. Optically good, of course, but as for universal glass - so-so. Noisy, slow, no stub, fifty dollars. A very compromise solution, and compromises on all sides.

For the ant’s eye, by the way, even 1: 1 is not enough; this is an additional lens of the Raynox type per hundred square meters plus rails and stacking.

    • Gregory

"... an amateur must have it himself." For an amateur there is a lot of things, you have to figure it out - "do I need it?" And here is the opportunity - to touch, touch.

  • US6IBD

Even if the camera has an AdobeRGB color space, you can convert to sRGB and work with it when developing in Photoshop.
But even after processing in AdobeRGB, you can “save the file for the WEB” to have normal colors. Since all publications on the internet will be in sRGB for a long time. And ACDSee only understands it, otherwise it will show the wrong color. But the standard Windows viewer shows any color space correctly.
Before printing pictures, it is better to check the color balance in the viewer.

  • Novel

For a long time and on an ongoing basis I have been using photo equipment rental.
    Normal rolling office
    - allows you to book the desired iron and glass in advance
    - makes pre-sale and post-return preparation, including full reset, adjustment, cleaning, etc.
    - sends equipment to the desired city and can be returned, if desired, also via mail.
Unlike a purchase, rent is immediately deducted from taxes on expenses. Therefore, the purchase is essentially unprofitable for the business - there are also large expenses and can only be written off within the framework of depreciation.
There is no horror of software reconfiguration if you work within the line of a brand that ensures the continuity of color between carcasses.
So, there’s just no reason to buy carcasses and lenses today if you have a normal rental.

  • Novel

According to the experience of communication with the rental service of recent years
The guys really love the lenses of a modular design. They are easily repaired, cleaned and adjusted, which is very important for rental.
The legislator of this design was kenon, now a similar design is used in the latest models by Sony, Tamron and Sigma.
Number one among carcasses in popularity - it was kenon due to the convenience of post-processing, now a mix.

  • Konstantin

Renting is profitable only for a day or two. I wanted to take GoPro 7 on vacation in Egypt for 10 days - they calculated UAH 3500 for the rent! And this is 30% of the cost! As a result, for 4000 hryvnias, I took her in a light B / W condition on the OLH.
Why did I go with a used camera so what? But if I drowned the rental, I would have to pay as for a new one, which is complete nonsense (and such rules are in all rentals). Why, in the event of a breakdown, is the cost of a new product paid, and not the real price of a used camera?

    • Q12

Rent is always profitable. Shooting tomorrow, and buying is both time and money, and good money or a complete lack of time (in your case, this is already "planning a purchase"). And if shooting requires 300 f2.8, then there is absolutely no way without renting ... And the one who has such a lens, in most cases, works in some kind of "Reuters" with all the consequences ...

    • Novel

Rent is beneficial if you need different equipment and or from time to time.
If you need one lens and it is not removed from the carcass and all year round in work, it is better to buy.

  • Sergei

For an ordinary amateur photographer, it is often quite enough to see a couple of normal reviews of those inexpensive lenses that he is interested in.
Therefore, renting a new product for a day to resolve the issue of acquisition is not always necessary.

And you don’t have to rush to grab the advertised novelty, often after a year you can wait for the prices to drop or take a slightly used one.

    • Novel

It's not about the reviews, but about $$$ and logic.
A good lens costs about $ 2000 or more today.
Second-hand they often just do not.
Such a lens can be used for a couple of weeks a year, well, a month. The rest of the time will be on the shelf.
Sense of such a purchase? Renting is clearly more profitable in all respects.
Buying a lens is only profitable when the lens is constantly in use.

      • Konstantin

There is always a point in buying, if it is not a 1-2 day rental. Lens for 2000.e. (50000UAH) is leased for 500-600 UAH per day. In total, about 1 month of rent per year will cost about 15000 UAH. The lens will pay off for you in 3,5 years, and taking into account the fact that 50-60 of its cost will be torn off with your hands in case of sale, then it’s profitable to buy. Otherwise, after 3-4 years you are without UAH 50000 and without a lens.

        • Roman

Well, yes, I've looked at rent in Lviv - 24-70, 70-200, 16-35. 100 Macro (which is not expensive anyway and, in principle, will not interfere with the collection). Almost everything. I would try some kind of tilt-shift, 50 / 1.2, 180 Macro - and they just don't exist.

        • Novel

Is it all right or wrong?
First, how many lenses do you need?
If one, then you can buy. And if 5 lenses? And this is $ 10. What's next? How much can be attributed to expenses on purchase and how much for rent?
The purchased lens becomes cheaper, and at the time of rent the available funds from the purchase can be used as working capital so as not to take out a loan for a business at a horse-drawn interest or simply put into the bank if there are any available.
So the choice of purchase vs rent is ambiguous and strongly depends on many factors.
Usually, rent is more profitable for a business and gives more opportunities and is simply cheaper.
For an amateur, everything is more complicated.

        • Novel

          Rental varies greatly by country.
          Conditions, price, discounts, convenience, choice.
Ukraine is one of the poorest countries in Europe with an average wage of about 300 dollars per month, like?
Such low hourly rates make it pointless to rent expensive equipment at a reasonable price, but how much does an experienced photographer earn per year in Ukraine? It turns out a classic circle of poverty - bad equipment gives low labor output, which gives low wages, which makes it impossible to buy normal equipment, and even there are no available loans.
For example, in Ukraine last year, as many as 1000 mortgage loans were issued throughout the country.
The photographic equipment rental business is limited by all the current problems of Ukraine.

        • Roman

Thank you, Cap, what would we do here without you.

  • IGOR

What's the difference - what is set up to you in the camera - sRGB or Adobe RGB. If you shoot in RAW, then neither the color space (sRGB or Adobe RGB), nor the white balance, nor the Picture Control set in the camera settings, affect the RAW image. All of these settings are taken into account when shooting in JPEG format.
