In short

Nikon AF-S 300 / 4D high-quality telephoto lens from the beginning of the two thousandth. Major update previous version.

In general, this is a worthy lens of a professional line. Fast, accurate, heavy, long and beautiful.

The 300mm focal length is the focal length transition from telephoto to super telephoto. Due to its maximum aperture of f / 4, this lens can be easily paired with teleconverters.

In the summer of 2019, the Nikon AF-S 300 / 4D is still an up-to-date model, is being sold new and supports official service.

Compared to 300 / 2.8 class lenses, the 300/4 lens line is more 'simple', however, all 300/4 versions are Nikon Nikkor professional lenses and are included in the Nikon Professional Service list.

Assembly

The lens came to my review with an original nice Nikon CL-M2 case. The survey Nikon AF-S 300 / 4D is in good external and technical condition, according to the owner, it was bought new and was used with care.

Nikon AF-S 300 / 4D is very well assembled. The lens body is made entirely of metal. Build quality is fully consistent with the professional focus of the lens. The lens case has a characteristic “wrinkled” coating typical of past Nikkor professional lenses.

The weight of the lens is a little more than 1400 grams (together with a tripod foot). For example, the popular Nikon N AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm 1: 2.8GII ED VR weighs even more. I was comfortable working with the Nikon AF-S 300 / 4D on cameras Nikon D700 и Nikon D90 with battery pack.

Nikon AF-S 300 / 4D 'is equipped with' a special function - a gold ring near the front lens, which means it can be attributed to the professional lenses of the NIKON NIKKOR line. Previously, this ring was placed only on TOP lenses with ED-glasses, but over time the situation has changed.

Nikon 300/4 AF has a wonderful retractable hood. The hood is easily and securely fixed in the extended and retracted states. Black fabric covered inside. The hood extends even with the front filter installed.

The Nikon AF-S 300 / 4D has a removable metal tripod foot. To remove or install it, you need to combine the mark with the arrow (strip + triangle) on the foot with the strip mark on the lens. The position of the foot is fixed with a special clamping fixed screw. The foot freely rotates 360 degrees around the axis of the lens. There are 3 point marks on the foot for quick installation of the lens and camera in a horizontal or vertical position, on the lens itself there are 2 point marks and one strip mark for aligning with the marks on the foot. During the rotation of the clamp there are no characteristic clicks that indicate the correct orientation. On the inside, the clamp has a fabric seal. The foot can only be removed from the lens that is detached from the camera.

Important: Some professional photographers have noticed that the tripod foot gives off excessive vibration, which makes it difficult to shoot comfortably with a tripod at long exposures. It is often advised to change this foot to another from a third-party manufacturer.

Important: the rear element is deep in the frame of the lens barrel. If dust gets on the lens or stains from condensation remain or the rear lens becomes dirty somehow, it will be extremely difficult to clean it.

Nikon AF-S 300 / 4D also exists in a white body color.

Focusing

Nikon AF-S 300 / 4D focuses quietly enough thanks to 'SWM'-motor (Silent Wbird Motor - quiet wave motor) and refers to the lens'AF S'type (with built-in motor focusing), and therefore it will automatically focus almost on any Nikon digital SLR camera.

To be precise, the lens will work correctly on any central locking system and central locking system except Nikon D3400 и Nikon D3500. This lens belongs to a rare type of Nikon Nikkor lens that has an aperture control ring and a built-in focus motor. Such lenses cannot be used correctly on these cameras due to their lack of aperture limit lever.

On the lens housing you can find focus switch 'M / A - M'. In the 'M / A' position, auto focus works with constant manual focus priority. The 'M / A' mode is very convenient and useful - for manual focusing or focus correction, you do not need to additionally switch the lens to the 'M' mode. 'ModeM / A'disables auto focus immediately after the start of rotation of the focus ring. To start auto focus, just click the focus activation button again.

The minimum focusing distance is only 1.45 meters, which is small enough for a 300 mm focal length. You can shoot with a maximum magnification of 1: 3.7. (the same coefficient, for example, has Nikon 70-200 / 4G).

Nikon AF-S 300 / 4D has a window with a scale of distances in meters and feet. There is no label for working in the infrared spectrum, but there is a depth of field scale, but only for the F / 32 value.

Nikon AF-S 300 / 4D has an optional 'Full ∞-3m' switch, which limits the focusing distance. The symbol ∞ means infinity.

  • In the 'Full' position, automatic focusing is available over the entire range of distances - from ∞ to MDF
  • In the '∞-3m' position, auto focus is available in the range from 3 meters to ∞.

Note that during manual focus, the limiter does not work. On the lens of the previous generation Nikon ED AF Nikkor 300mm 1: 4 used a more interesting distance limiter with the ability to select a range of distances manually.

The focus ring is very wide and comfortable, rotates 180 degrees. During auto focus, the focus ring does not rotate and you can hold the lens behind it.

Auto Focus Speed - high... Although the lens does not focus at lightning speed, it refocuses on nearby objects very quickly. This causes the lens to create a distinctly audible hum during autofocus. When changing AF direction quickly and frequently (when the lens 'jerks') there is a slight crackling noise from stopping and starting the motor.

As far as I know, the Nikon AF-S 300 / 4D uses the second generation of Nikon SWM motors. There is a lot of information on the net that the motor in this lens is a weak point. Motor breaks down more often than other similar lenses.

Very important: The focusing speed depends significantly on the illumination and complexity of the scene. In low light conditions, for example, when the lens is closed by the front cover, the focusing speed is low, and the lens travel time from MDF to infinity and back is very long.

During focusing, the front and rear lenses remain stationary, as the lens uses internal focusthat is indicated on the case by the letters'IF'-'Iinternal Focus' - 'Inner Focus'. You can easily use any filters, for example polarizing or gradient.

When using auto focus through JVI on cameras Nikon D90 (with unpretentious Multi-CAM 1000 focusing system) and Nikon D700 (with advanced Multi-CAM 3500FX Focusing System) The lens showed excellent focus tenacity.

It's important: on camera Nikon D90 (maybe some others) with focus there are two tangible glitch:

  1. When in JVI strong defocusing, lens doesn't want to focus at all and responds poorly to repeated pressing of the focus activation button. He doesn’t want to do a full sweep of the lenses in order to at least catch on to something. During diverse plots, this happens quite often and starts to get nervous. The situation does not change from the position of the focusing distance limiter. If you help the lens a little - twist the focusing ring in the right direction so that the defocusing becomes less, then the lens 'comes to its senses' and begins tenaciously and clearly aiming where it should be.
  2. Even worse, he often starts trying to drive away the lenses and focus in the wrong direction. For example, if you set the focusing distance to 3 meters, and then you need to focus on infinity (for example, on a house in the distance), the lens begins to focus not towards infinity, but towards MDF. This most often happens if there is a strong initial defocus.

Focus Features:

  1. Important: The focus quality of the Nikon AF-S 300 / 4D in Live View is highly dependent on the camera used.
  2. Nikon AF-S 300 / 4D has a pronounced 'Focus Breathing' effect (changing the viewing angle during focusing). During focusing towards the MDF, the viewing angle decreases.
  3. Focus Shift (focus shift, changing focus distance due to iris)
  4. Nikon AF-S 300 / 4D does not have a hard stop (hard infinity mechanical stop) which allows you to accurately and quickly focus the lens to infinity under any external temperature conditions. For accurate aiming at infinity, you cannot just bring the focus ring to its extreme position.
  5. The lens transmits the distance to the subject in the camera and is D lens.
  6. The lens is compatible with AF converters: Nikon TC-14EII, TC-17EII and TC-20EIII
  7. Unknown compatibility with Nikon FTZ and Nikon FT1 adapters for Nikon Z and Nikon 1 mirrorless cameras. Most likely, everything should work well
Nikon ED AF-S Nikkor 300mm 1: 4D IF Silent Wave Motor

Nikon ED AF-S Nikkor 300mm 1: 4D IF Silent Wave Motor

Diaphragm

Diaphragm lens consists of 9 rounded petalsthat form a flat hole. Aperture closes to F / 32.

It's important: The aperture blades are located behind the last lens of the lens. If you look at the aperture blades from the bayonet side, you can see them 'naked'(see) It may seem that the lens does not have enough rear lenses - but in fact it’s just that unusual optical design. A similar diaphragm is also available in Nikon 180mm 1: 2.8 ED AF Nikkor (and its modifications).

The lens uses a manual aperture ring (view) To be able to control the value aperture from camera or for automatic installation aperture on modern central control valves, you need to turn the control ring to the F / 32 value, after which it must be fixed with a special lock with a red-orange mark, which is located to the right of the marks aperture. If this is not done, then on the display of some cameras an error will be displayed - 'fEE' (ring is not installed aperture) Some cameras having diaphragm rheostat, allow you to control the diaphragm using this ring, but only in metering modes exposure 'M' and 'A'. You can read more about this issue in the section on Non-G Lenses. Ring aperture rotates with clicks, the values F / 4, 5.6, 8, 11, 16, 22, 32 are plotted on it; it is not possible to set an intermediate value between pairs of numbers using the aperture ring. Intermediate values can only be set using the camera menu.

One of the implicit benefits Telephoto lenses with a maximum aperture of 1: 4 is the ability to easily use them with teleconverters.

When using a tele-converter with a magnification of 1.4x, the lens turns into '420 / 5.6', while you can automatically focus on all Nikon digital SLR cameras.

Even when using a teleconverter with a magnification of 2X, when the lens turns into '600/8′, It can automatically focus on some cameras. You can find a list of cameras whose focus sensors are designed to work with a maximum aperture of F / 8 here.

If use teleconverter 2X with Nikon AF-S 300 / 4D lens on cameras Nikon D7100, D7200, D7500, D500 and additionally enable the framing mode 1.3x, you can get EGF 1170 mm (300*2*1.5*1.3), and the maximum opening is F/8.0. On cameras of the Nikon 1 series, paired with a 2x teleconverter, you can get EGF 1620mm (300*2*2.7). But most of all EGF available on cameras Nikon D2x и D2xs, where you can enable 2x crop mode and get EGF 1800 мм (300*2*1.5*2).

Image quality

Despite its age, the Nikon AF-S 300 / 4D shows good image quality.

Sharpness

  • in the center of the frame on F / 4, the lens has good sharpness
  • there is a drop in sharpness to the edges of the frame
  • great Resolution at the center of the frame at F / 5.6-F / 8
  • sharpness does not increase when the aperture is closed more than F / 8
  • the sharpness margin should be sufficient for at least teleconverters with 1.4x

Distortion

  • lens has very low distortion

Vignetting

  • the overall level of vignetting is at a level typical for such lenses
  • noticeable vignetting is observed only at F / 4-F / 5.6
  • on Nikon DX cameras, the vignette is invisible even on F / 4
  • vignetting is enhanced with focus towards MDF
  • vignetting is easily fixable in the editor

Aberration

  • low chromatic aberration
  • spherical aberration rate is low
  • the level of refrigeration (aberrations coloring contrast elements in the blur zone) is low

Rest

  • nice, rich color reproduction
  • the aperture at F / 5.6-F / 11 is well rounded; a polygon is already noticeable at lower values
  • the lens can catch glare and small flare, it is advisable to always use a retractable lens hood
  • in many scenes, the lens can create nice bokeh

There is a lens profile for the lens in popular RAW converters.

My experience

Nikon AF-S 300 / 4D has a good balance of assembly, aperture, image quality and price. These lenses are bought primarily for any specific tasks. Usually this is shooting animals, sports, portrait photography.

Most of all I am interested in such lenses for portrait photography, but 70-200 / 2.8 is also suitable for these tasks.

With the Nikon AF-S 300 / 4D, you simply enjoy the shooting process.

Results

Nikon AF-S 300 / 4D is what a good telephoto should be like. Nowadays, it is somewhat outdated, but still suitable for a wide range of photo tasks.

10 main advantages:

  1. good optical performance
  2. quality assembly
  3. convenient retractable hood
  4. detachable tripod foot
  5. 77 mm classic diameter for filters (previous version of the lens used 82 mm or drop-in filters)
  6. the ability to use autofocus teleconverters
  7. fast and fairly quiet ring focus motor
  8. M / A mode with the ability to constantly focus manually in auto focus mode
  9. internal focusing with excellent MDF
  10. nine-blade aperture, which gives smooth discs of blur on covered apertures

10 main shortcomings:

  1. a lot of weight. For example, Nikon N AF-S 300/4 E weighs almost half
  2. no image stabilizer. For example, one-year lens Nikon ED AF VR-Nikkor 80-400mm 1: 4.5-5.6D already used the first generation Nikon Vibration Reduction stabilizer
  3. lack of basic dust and moisture protection. For example, a new Nikon N AF-S 300/4 E at least rubber mount seal
  4. tangible effect of 'Focus Breathing' (changes in viewing angle during focusing)
  5. a lot of information about the unreliability of the built-in focus motor
  6. Nikon camera owners had to wait 10 years for the release of the fast (in terms of focusing) Nikon AF-S 300 / 4D. Back in 1991, Canon had a similar Canon 300/4 L USM with a fast ultrasonic motor (this is more a drawback of the Nikon system as a whole rather than the Nikon AF-S 300 / 4D)
  7. the tripod foot can only be removed from the lens that is detached from the camera
  8. the tripod foot gives slight vibrations, lens shake, which is critical at slow shutter speeds
  9. the rear optical element is located very deep in the frame of the case, and even behind the aperture blades. In case of pollution it will be extremely difficult to clean.
  10. there is a noticeable amount of glare in the backlight

Reasoning about the “obsolescence” of technology makes sense only in one case: if you can distinguish this particular model from an analogue by the picture, and see the advantages or disadvantages ...

Otherwise, the technodroch is austere, triangular and meaningless.

    • Arkady Shapoval

I can easily counter that this remark of mine was taken for a reason. One example is the operation of the stabilizer, where everyone will see a blurry picture under the same conditions. Also, usually those users who allow themselves to throw themselves with such loud and not very beautiful words, in the overwhelming majority, this is what they most often do.

      • Shaked

        +1

  • Vitaly N

The model for the photo lens is somehow different ... Where is the N8008?

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Here

      • Vitaly N

What's not here? And then Sonya looks like a lid ...

  • Novel

Well, the low weight of 300 / 4E is due to design features, this is an analog of the Canon DO, as I understand it, the same Fresnel lenses.

And so, the disadvantages, of course, are significant ...

  • Nikita

    Interesting portraits turned out!

  • B. R. P.

Flowers - finally set off! It can also be a light macro. Thanks to Arkady and Boris for the review.

    • Novel

This is not an “easy macro”. This is the ability of any high-aperture telephoto camera to separate the object from the background due to a small depth of field. A flower 8 centimeters in size occupies only a small part of the frame - what kind of macro is this ...

      • B. R. P.

There are still dragonflies there) but, of course, it does not reach "real macro".

  • Anonymous 2.0

An interesting use of telephoto in portraiture, I'll take it into service)

  • Kostya

portrait using a telephoto, always obtained

  • Dim

The girl poses well, it turns out pretty naturally.
    Boris has interesting pictures.
Nevertheless, if it’s better to carry such a fool, it’s still better than 80-200 2.8, it’s more universal as for me, and not so that the picture is worse.

  • Jury

Thanks for the review. With D700, even on a cloudy day, a good color is obtained if saturation is added RAW-4587

    • Vitaly N

In the original, colors are more natural. Although who likes something ...

    • Dim

I would say in the original the colors are better suited to the mood. Bright red and green are the main colors and sharply contrast with each other, plus against the background of the sea and the beach - a pacifying landscape, the girl in the appropriate image is more languid than a vamp.

      • Dim

Although I'm not lying, just green is an additional one, consisting of two other basic blue and yellow from that and contrast.

      • Arkady Shapoval

        All right

  • Onotole

"Such lenses are interesting for portrait photography, but the 70-200 / 2.8 is well suited for these tasks."

Moreover, 80 (70) -200 / 2,8 is much better suited for this business - it is lighter and more compact (80-200 is even lighter), but the main thing is incommensurably more versatile - far from everywhere, even the street has the ability to move 20+ meters just to fit the entire model.
And if we add a teleconverter 80 to 70 (200) -2,8 / 1,4, then at the output we get +/- the same 300 / 4.0. But whatever one may say, nevertheless, wider angles are in demand more often, while the opposite will not work - there are no reverse converters converting 300/4 to 200 / 2,8.
So all the same, 80 (70) -200 / 2,8 will be much better

    • Novel

“Moreover, the opposite will not work - there are no converters converting 300/4 into 200 / 2,8”.

      Do not believe it! https://metabones.com/products/?c=speed-booster

      • Onotole

To put it mildly, not the same thing, this thing simply reduces the projection area, and will not allow the use of the entire area of a full-frame matrix. Not to mention the fact that with mirrored systems this does not work at all.

        • Novel

But formally she does just that. :) Turns 300/4 into about 200 / 2,8: D True, only full-frame and only on EOS-M, but nonetheless.

  • Arkady Shapoval

    Who are you?

    • pasha

Sounds like a cry from the soul of some repairman

  • Kirill Yankovsky

Well, finally, the long-awaited review! The picture is good, but it clearly does not reach the old 300F4 AF with its incredible plastic, chic and film texture. The AF-S has a sharper picture, less aberrations, yes - but rough and technical like the 70-300VR

    • anonym

For soft there are 300 / 2.8, 200/2, and 300/4 purely for sports, birds, where everything should be sharp. The old 300/4 had an even more pleasant contrast.

    • anonym

300/4 afs, too, was made under the film, if that

  • Gregory

    Thanks for the review!
Apparently, I'm not the only one who suffers with the autofocus of this lens, since there is item 5 in the minuses :))
Really strange autofocus: I bought it under d800, then changed the camera to 810 and that's it, autofocus stopped working (you turn on the camera and there are quiet clicks inside the lens), I set it to 750th, also nonsense. You bet on d80 / 90 / 300s / 700, everything works. And one more thing: it does not work on 800ke with the latest firmware, but with the old everything works)))))
And yes, the picture is wonderful from this glass)))

    • Boris

Gregory, do you think autofocus will not work with all instances of these camera models and lenses in this bundle? and how to solve this problem?

    • Max Cold

Gregory, if it is still relevant, let me know - I will tell you how to solve this problem with the help of a soldering iron and a small piece of wire. I had the same thing with the D750, there are problems with grounding inside the lens
