Nikon IX-NIKKOR 60-180mm 1: 4-5.6 is designed for cameras of the Nikon Pronea series, and there were only two models:

  1. Pronea s
  2. Pronea 600i, which for the US market was sold under a different name - Pronea 6i

These cameras have a classic Nikon F mount, but they are film type SLR cameras. APS SLR (Advanced Photo System Sgroin Lens Reflex). Nikon Pronea cameras are designed to work with IX240 film with a maximum frame size of 16.7 X 30.2 mm (aspect ratio 16: 9). During shooting, you could choose one of three crop options: APS-H 16: 9, APS-C 3: 2, APS-P 3: 1, depending on which crop factor amounted to 1.25, 1.44 and 1.36, respectively. This value was indicated on the film and taken into account during printing. Now such a film is not produced.

Nikon IX system is not widespread and in just 3-4 years has become part of the story. Many other manufacturers have also been involved in creating APS SLR cameras for IX240 film, but they have come to the same end.

For Nikon Pronea cameras in the period 1996-2002, only a few light IX-NIKKOR series zoom lenses were produced:

Unlike other Nikon Nikkor lenses, the lens type for Nikon Pronea did not indicate the type of focus (they are all lenses 'AF' type), and the absence of a diaphragm ring was not indicated (they are all lenses 'G' type) All these lenses do not use special optical elements in their optical schemes, their body, as well as the bayonet mount, are made of plastic. All have 7 aperture blades, and filters with a diameter of 52 or 46 mm.

IX stands for Iinformation eXchange, Data Exchange. This technology allows you to record the date and time of shooting, parameters exposure, framing method, etc. onto photographic film magnetic or optical. Roughly speaking, this is a film analogue of modern EXIF.

These 'cropped film' lenses are the ancestor of all Nikon DX lenses for Nikon APS-C cameras (crop factor 1.5).

Important: Nikon Pronea cameras can use ordinary Nikon lenses with an F-mount: AF (D, G), AF-S (D, G) types. AF-P, E, VR lenses will not work correctly. DX lenses will give vignetting.

Important: and here IX-NIKKOR lenses cannot be used with conventional Nikon SLR cameras. These lenses have a large protrusion on the side of the mount, which abuts against the mirror of classic cameras with Nikon F mount.


The rear protruding part of the body rim is simply sawn to a certain level, to be precise, to the point where the rear lens protrudes at a value of 70 mm focal length. The rear protruding portion of the body frame is simply a hollow plastic tube in the middle of which the lenses move. During zooming in the direction of 180 mm, the rear Nikon IX-NIKKOR 60-180mm 1: 4-5.6 rear lenses are removed from the lens mount and do not rest against the mirror of ordinary Nikon CZKs. Also, a restriction was added to the zoom ring, which now rests on a value of 70 mm and does not allow you to set 60 mm focal length and thereby prevents too much protrusion of the rear lens. Maybe something else was redone.

In the 70-180mm range, the lens works like any other Nikon Nikkor 'AF-G'FX / DX. In terms of its specifics and capabilities, this Nikon IX-NIKKOR 60-180mm 1: 4-5.6 is similar to a full-frame lens Nikon AF Nikkor 75-240mm 1: 4.5-5.6 и Nikon 80-200mm AF Nikkor 1: 4.5-5.6D.

The Nikon IX-NIKKOR 60-180mm 1: 4-5.6 has a plastic body with a plastic bayonet mount, a plastic focus ring and a plastic zoom ring. The zoom ring may visually appear rubberized, but it is not, the texture of the plastic imitates rubber anti-slip inserts. The Pronea S camera mount is also made of plastic.

The focus ring rotates 90 degrees. During focusing, the trunk of the lens rotates and drives forward. The focus ring is uncomfortable, very narrow, jerky.

Auto Focus is fast. There are no problems with focusing the lens. The redone lens will focus only on cameras with a focus motor.

The lens produces 'average' image quality with a noticeable drop in sharpness with increasing focal length. The lens is weak at 180 mm. In addition, it suffers from noticeable distortion and lateral chromatic aberrations. In the backlight, the image is clogged with glare (example). By itself, it gives a rather 'hard' picture, so the photos in the gallery are slightly tweaked with the native Nikon Capture NX-D.

What's in full frame?

Apparently a copy of the Nikon IX-NIKKOR 60-180mm 1: 4-5.6 from this review was altered specifically for the Nikon DX cameras. Full frame camera Nikon D700 the lens catches a mirror. But still, here's what I managed to find out:

  • vignetting is greatly enhanced when focusing on MDF
  • vignetting increases significantly when the aperture is closed
  • vignetting is present at all focal lengths (70-180 mm)
  • minimal vignetting is observed while focusing on infinity and open apertures. Distinguishing a vignette from any FX lens will be extremely difficult
  • the strongest vignetting is observed when focusing on MDF and strongly closed apertures. Example 1, Example 2.

My experience

Nikon IX-NIKKOR 60-180mm 1: 4-5.6 turned out to be a weak lens, but this is not surprising, since Nikon IX-NIKKOR 60-180mm 1: 4-5.6 was the first telephoto for APS cameras. I was very interested to work with the IX-lens on the digital.

This should always be taken into account when placing “film” lenses on digital cameras.

For mirrorless cameras, there is only one image that is formed on the matrix and absolutely all camera nodes work with it. In the DSLR, we have as many as 3 different images: what we see in the viewfinder (on frosted glass), what the autofocus sensor sees, and what happens on the sensor. Therefore, to hell with it, you will definitely focus on it if there is even a slight inequality in the distances to the matrix and the used focusing plane (manual or automatic).

After connecting the appropriate lens, this correction is automatically applied. Thus, once tuned in, you can forever forget about it and always get jewelry with accurate focus. From my own experience I will say that with a fine-tuning tool, I was able to adjust the correction for my 28-105 in such a way that in macro mode, at autofocus, removing the dugout flower, I was able to choose with autofocus which pestle to focus on! If the back- or front-focus of the lens is so large that it cannot be corrected with the built-in camera tools, then such a lens has a direct road back to the store. On return, as defective goods.
