Masterpiece Button

Masterpiece Button

"Masterpiece" button (wondering who owns the copyright for the "photos" from this preview?)

Machines have learned to generate faces that do not exist in the real world. It sometimes takes me a few seconds to understand that in front of me is not a real photograph, but an artificially created face. Sometimes I don’t understand at all that there is an artificially created photograph in front of my eyes. Actually, such an experiment was the starting point for this small note.

To understand a little about what is at stake, I advise you to read the different materials at the following links:

  1. https://www.izakayasushilounge.com https://thispersondoesnotexist.com/ each time the main page is updated, a new unique person’s face (portrait) is created. The image size is already 1024 * 1024, which is oh so good
  2. Nvidia taught the car how to create faces using given input parameters. You can watch a very interesting video clip here. here
  3. There are a lot of similar things. For example, the removal of excess from photographs (something that often has to be done at work in Photoshop) can be observed here
  4. Noise handling, link (rate moment with koala and removal of inscriptions)

All this is very interesting.

Personally, as a practicing photographer, most of my time is spent on:

  1. viewing all footage from the session and choosing the best shots. The task at first glance is simple, but carefully reviewing at least 1000 pictures, deciding which picture to keep from a series of pictures, and which one to delete is the most difficult task. It’s not difficult to remove, it’s difficult to take. The most difficult thing is to select photos for further detailed revision
  2. it takes a lot of thoughtful processing of the selected images. Everyone wants to be the most beautiful or to see their loved ones in the best possible light. All this requires a colossal investment in a 'Photoshop workbench'. It is difficult for amateur photographers to estimate the level of loading at times when several thousand frames are recruited per week. It’s not difficult to remove, it’s difficult to process

Most likely, in the future, such developments will significantly simplify and help me and other photographers in selecting the best frames and finalizing them. And also this thing should help:

  1. time goes on, processing skills are growing, and there is not enough time for everything. At the beginning of my work, I have a lot of interesting photos, which now, with new processing skills, would play with other colors. It would be great if I could feed the whole network of my old photos to the neural networks, and get 5-6 excellent frames at the output, which are not ashamed to show anywhere
  2. skinton issue will be resolved. Skinton will be anything you like, it will not depend on the sensor of the photoapp, nor on the processor, but only on the wishes of the photographer
  3. you can come up with many more useful things, you can voice ideas in the comments

It would be very nice if the software package quickly and efficiently, and most importantly batch processed the necessary photos with an individual approach to each individual photo. Most likely in the future such a mechanism will already be built into the cameras. Most likely there will be a complex hardware-software complex that can immediately issue photos in a certain way, with given wishes for a future photo. Again, most likely it will be possible to easily simulate the pictures of any (any!) Photographer, in any style with any effects.

Old and new will merge and the masterpiece button will still be created. This whole topic with neural networks and all the like that revolves around AI at first seems like a funny toy, but the attitude towards it changes over time. First of all, this will force photography to a new level. In the comments, as expected, there will be thoughts that no one can replace a good photographer, but, alas, in many photo tasks it will not be so.

“It would be very cool if the software complex quickly and efficiently, and most importantly, batch processes the necessary photos with an individual approach to each individual photo. "

and at the same time not cost like a wing from a Boeing ...

    • Arkady Shapoval

I am sure that over time, a good software package will cost like today Photoshop or any other similar product for the non-industrial software market

      • Vlad

The question is - what is left for photographers?

        • Arkady Shapoval

This is a complex philosophical question. I would answer that I accept the new rules of the game and continue to create / earn money / enjoy photography.

        • Koba

with such technologies, with the newly minted Stanley Kubrick the Younger, the Americans will soon make a manned flight to Neptune and Uranus, or even to another galaxy ...

        • Koba

And yet - 90% of the work of the so-called. professional photographers who earn money by photography is a craft that is simplified by new technologies, and this is good, and those who will be engaged in art photography, say, the same photographers in isolation from everyday life, may even return to black and white film photography, buy an old one Leica M3 or Nikon F3 and imitate Cartier-Bresson, in the good sense of the word. New technologies do not add to the number of new talents anyway, but simply a huge amount of photographic garbage is created in the world every day by simply registering frames, especially thanks to mobile phones. I read somewhere that in China alone, more than 6 billion photos are sent daily in chat rooms, mainly who ate what and where they slept ...

If cloud computing is built on the capabilities of NVidia, then theoretically, for owners of video cards from this manufacturer, the program should be fast free.
Since each connected site will be part of the computing system, and other people's projects will be considered at its computing power.

Only one problem - not even an alpha version of this software shell has been released. On GitHub you can find sources in python, but they are unlikely to interest photographers ...

        • Arkady Shapoval

This is not a problem, for all this is only developing. When everything is ready for the mass consumer, getting and learning how to use it will be no more difficult than downloading a regular program.

          • Reader

You are in a hurry. To create a program at once and so that "she knew how to make coffee and ran to the store." As long as the programina becomes what you say, we’ll grow old, and I don’t know which version and build program it will get to. Surely when you started photographing Photoshop and the developer were there now, but there is still no “masterpiece” button.

            • Arkady Shapoval

No, I'm not in a hurry, but sharing information and personal opinion. If I were in a hurry, I would relax and just rely on this very button :)

  • Ishtar

For the tedious work of processing photos, there are specially trained people-photoshoppers. IMHO, the photographer should enjoy his work - the choice of interesting angles and artistic style, to take unrealistically cool pictures in their essence. And Photoshop will bring the skin tone and so on to the ideal, while they have not yet been replaced by artificial intelligence, but soon it will be so! And when that happens, the line between the “ordinary person” and the “professional photographer” will be erased! The machine will do all the tedious work. And then, all that will remain valuable is the invisible handwriting of a talented photographer, style, idea ...

The main difficulty is the formalization of the conditions of choice, and most importantly, the formalization of emotions. The smile is not always pleasant and friendly, although the lips are stretched and the teeth stick out.
Yes, it will be able to choose good pictures. But nothing more than good.

  • Nicholas

Site https://thispersondoesnotexist.com/ in general, not bad, but if you look at more than 20 photos, then you begin to notice some software clichés. For example, frequent facial asymmetry or implausible teeth, lips, mouth. There were mistakes - sometimes technical (strange, inexplicable spots in the photo), sometimes semantic (a woman with stubble on her face).
But still, this site is a definite breakthrough

    • Alexey

All people's faces are asymmetrical. Absolutely symmetrical faces look "inanimate". Apparently, you meant an unnatural, hypertrophied asymmetry.

  • Alex fg.

I can’t believe what I saw! Thanks for the info

The main thing is that the customer likes it. Honestly, I often see people have such peculiar tastes that I don't want to waste time on processing - I am already silent about "skin tone" and "bokeh" ..)

A specialist (photographer, color corrector, art critic), who knows how high-quality photographs look, is unlikely to be satisfied solely with machine processing. And yes, technically correct photos are not a masterpiece yet)

There is Photolemur, which, with artificial intelligence, makes masterpieces from RAW in one click. I tried it. It can give the result in one photo out of a hundred. So while dreams, dreams. The trouble lies elsewhere. If they do a real AI, then we will all have to fold, since we will not be able to compete with it ...)

    • Arkady Shapoval

Ftolemur is completely different. But, of course, as I noted in the article, now the trend is at the stage of gaining power and so far no one really believes in it.

  • Dmitry Savritsky

It all started as art and creativity, and degenerated into Photoshop, and even automatic.

    • Arkady Shapoval

I would not say that photography started out as an art. And photography is also used in a fairly wide number of areas where it is not an art, but an applied tool. And photography itself, which belongs to art, “degenerated” rather into digital photography, where the same Photoshop is just one of the conditions for its existence. I could be wrong, this is a delicate topic.

  • Alexander

The note is about nothing at all ... Of course, you can guess on the coffee grounds about how photography will change under the influence of new technologies - but this is just wasting time.
It's a strange thing that on the blog, under the influence of grumbling and offended forum hamsters, they began to delete really interesting and even useful articles by enthusiasts, and instead, more and more boring and faceless announcements of new products from manufacturers appear. Well, they have the right ... As they say - the owner is a gentleman.
And I, perhaps, reviews on photography will be better read on Yandex.Market and more useful and interesting.

    • Arkady Shapoval

      A lot of subjective. So:
      1. Articles are not deleted. All articles from readers are, as always, here. https://radojuva.com/main-photo/readers-review/ (link in the right side column). In the tape there is only one last review from the reader.
      2. All articles from all readers can be found in a bundle here. https://radojuva.com/2015/12/end-of-line/ (a link is in each of the reviews from the reader)
      3. In this note, I not only wondered about the change, but also described some of the difficulties in my work, and also gave links to already working very good things, for example, such as removing unnecessary artifacts or working with noise. As for me, this is a very interesting topic and not to write a note about it is a terrible sin
      4. Announcements are also needed, many users are interested, for example, from the last announcement, Olika collected more than 70 comments.
      5. Of course, the taste and color of all markers are different, each his own, I have a positive attitude to any opinion, even if it does not coincide with mine. Everyone is free in his choice - this is great happiness

  • Charles

Robots work hard - is the person happy?

  • Alexander

Great ... There are plastic tomatoes, there are also plastic cucumbers ... Soon there will be photos "plastic" ... You read such articles and think, do we really live in the Matrix ...? Advertising on TV and on the radio, which everyone hates and no one watches or listens to, Photographers who do their best to photograph everything they can and sell to magazines that no one buys or watches either ... Soon, based on wishes of the photographer and the photographer does not have to do anything, he pressed the button and the picture with plastic faces flew to the magazine ... Or maybe soon there will be cameras that will fly around the world themselves and shoot and send pictures to publications, but a person (no longer a photographer ) will not even know where the button is at the camera and will just lie on the couch and wait for money from such a camera to arrive at the account ...? Then the question is - why do we need such a photo ...? Photography is an art and pleasure, not a hoarding process ... Sales of cameras in Russia, and not only cameras, are falling rapidly, but everyone stubbornly keeps silent about it ... A camera now is no longer just a luxury, but a very expensive luxury, and now you will think a thousand times before buying a new camera ... Until 2014, I bought myself a new camera almost every year, at what different manufacturers, because they cost humanly ... And in 2014, apparently the hucksters thought it was not enough and they made a mess in December, turned everything upside down and now they are glad that they gave a shit to all the people ... Now I save those cameras and lenses that I have and now I am not going to buy anything new ... Because the greed of manufacturers and hucksters has already reached an unimaginable limit ...

    • Alex fg.

In dollars + - the price is the same, and then think for yourself

      • Novel

Write to Putin. Get on your knees. Usually helps.

The logic is simply amazing. Your film Nikon could work for decades, well, you would buy it and use it until now, why are you looking at other cameras? So that it would be, as in the blessed USSR, only not our condo Zenith, but the damned bourgeois Nikon. What's going on in these crazy heads ...

      • 1Ds_mk3

        Alexander:
So buy a film F75 or F65. This is now cheaper than going to the store for ersatz products.
Alexander, in a poor standard of living, it is not the capitalists and the $$$ that should be blamed, but the fucking damned who has arranged a paradise life for all Russians since 2015. Compare your salary and salary of the senator or deputy, the difference is from 15 to 30 times. Think again, who is to blame for the way Russians live now and remember two things: 1) Who did you vote for last February at the re-presidential election in the Russian Federation? 2) Whose Crimea?

        • Alexander

I don't blame anyone at all, I just state the facts ... And I was not stuck either in the 70s or in the 90s ... And I don't need a film Nikon ... And he did not work for me for decades, but Nikon used to release a camera a little maybe more than once every ten years, and now it spanks the same crap every half a year, which is getting worse and worse ... I just outlined the situation, which you can't imagine worse ... I have a bunch of Nikon cameras, Olympus cameras and Sony cameras ... I have a bunch of lenses and Nikon, and Sony, and Tamron and Sigma ... And all this stuff was bought until 2014, when the prices for it all were humane ... All this crap is enough for me for a lifetime ... But now it's been a long time I have never heard that someone would want to buy a DSLR, although until 2014 I had a lot of friends from my acquaintances ... If earlier some super budget DSLR like Canon 1200 or Nikon 3100 cost 11 units together with 18-55 and such cameras were not previously bought only by the Martians, but now these same budget cameras cost so much that no one looks at them ... And people do not care about manufacturers who “do not in any way connect prices with the level of domestic salaries” ... These are their problems ... But facts remain facts ... Photo shops, including those in Moscow, are slowly closing, and there are no buyers in them for a long time ... Someone lost their way or who has free money ... And then I see here some very clever comments are made and live in 2020, in which there will be even more chaos ... Well, well, live guys ...

          • Andrei Other

Relative concepts are expensive or cheap, and they are measured solely with the ability and desire to melt away with a certain amount of money. Regarding salaries, machinery in the USSR cost much more.
Why do nobody need a DSLR now? The layman needs compact devices that allow everything to be quickly uploaded to the Internet. IPhones with samsungs do an excellent job with this task. And mind you, these smartphones are priced at the top of crop or unpretentious ff. So the price is not the main thing? You can talk about quality as long as you like, but if the quality suits you, why wear more?

          • Arkady Shapoval

In dollars, the price of cameras of the same line is + - at the same level. But when the dollar rose sharply 2-4 times the value of the currencies of some countries of the former CIS, it began to seem that the world conspiracy was against photographers.
Manufacturers of cameras go to the upper segment, because the phones dragged themselves over the blanket with camera sales. Because they do less, better and more expensive.
Also, the market is saturated with “DSLR” / “cool cameras”, now it's not as “wow” as it was in 2011. Now they are with many and this does not allow them to be “photographers”. So the excitement subsided. In the same way, the trend is falling for other things, for example, the same iPhones, because everyone is already full, there is a lot of other things, etc. (who does not know, for the first time last year there was a decline in sales of phones from Apple). Etc. etc.

      • Noone

What a nonsense. And about Nikon and about prices and about the USSR. 2020 on the nose, and a man stuck in the 70s

      • B. R. P.

Manufacturers of equipment in no way associate prices with the level of domestic salaries and with the purchasing power of CIS citizens. And no way will help.

        • Valery A.

Nevertheless, we see models in one store at a gray price, and at a white one, 20% more expensive. They can do it when they want.

          • Andrei Other

You probably don’t know how gray goods differ from white.
White goods are imported by an official distributor, cleared, certified, advertised and sold in bulk to dealers.
Serovozov can skip any of these points and very good to save.
At the household level, the risks are minimal, so I don’t care from whom to buy a camera. Here in production or business, where they may ask for the lack of certificates, or for a day there is incommensurably more goods, gray goods are dangerous.

          • Alexander

Yes, I noticed that after the mess, arranged in 2014, gray photographic equipment appeared in the stores ... But this, on the contrary, is good ... The price is lower, but the guarantee is the same ... The only difference is that under the guarantee you need to carry to this very store or send ... Well, to us Tatars, what's the difference ... The price is lower and good ... And the lens, for example, the same, is no different from white ...

      • Andrei Other

In order for pricing to be built on the basis of Russian salaries, they must be produced in Russia. And we do not produce anything. And any product should cost so much as to adequately pay the calories spent on the production. Do you want to get a decent salary? And why then do you allow yourself to think that photographic equipment manufacturers should work for a penny? For some reason, VS5 believes that they are the smallest salary, they are offended, but the neighbor for no reason demands billions for his work.

        • Denis

+1, I would not say that photographic equipment costs sky-high money
everyone will find an option for their income

  • Peter Sh.

Oh death, oh the horror of our days!
    How to live further?

By the way, reporters in decent media are forbidden to send processed photos.
Well, now you can make a movie about what you want. Especially in the light of the fall of cryptocurrency and the loss of huge money by Nvidia, etc.
That's when I myself can figure it out with my own hands, then we'll talk.

And so, yes. Many benefits could be gained.
Although the robot will never completely replace the photographer, of course.

  • anonym

And why then will professional photographers be needed?

    • Carl Zeiss

      “Then”, when exactly?

    • Andrei Other

Well, professionals will always be needed, and mediocrity and those who do not know how to change will be left overboard.

  • Alexey

I did not understand the hype and gloom. There are new programs that facilitate the processing of photos. What's so bad

  • Denis

    I do not share enthusiasm
such programs have been used to create photobots for a very long time

  • Dmitriy

It seems to me that photography as an art is gradually disappearing. With an abundance of programs such as Photoshop, etc., photographers have become more photoshopers. You look at the picture and understand that the camera will never take a picture like this, that everything is smeared out in the program. All this is sad.

    • Andrei Other

How do photo enlargers with reagents differ from photoshop?

      • Oleg

The enlarger projects onto the paper only what is on the film ... no filters, no sharpening, no color change. The comparison seems to be not entirely successful.

        • Michael

You can see right away that you are very far from film photography. All of the above is done when printing from negative, just a little more complicated in execution

          • Oleg

Perhaps my knowledge in this area is not very deep, since the last time I did this in the 80s, as a teenager, naturally at the most amateur level - Zorkiy-4, Svema film, a development tank, baths, a couple red light district, bathroom and a simple enlarger.

        • Novel

Did you know that even Photoshop's Dodge / Burn tools look like their film counterparts? Dodge - a mask on a stick to cover some area and underexpose it when printing it, Burn - a hand with fingers folded in a circle to overexpose and darken. So a bunch of all sorts of techniques were used for developing and printing, which then migrated to Photoshop. And these legendary old photographs are the same “photoshop” and wild retouching, and work with color and whatever.

      • Arkady Shapoval

If you dig a story, you can find that at one film time everyone was obsessed with retouching their black and white photographs. Now the round of history that we went through is simply repeating itself.

        • Oleg

In the archive of grandfather and grandmother, he himself saw a photo with his own eyes, everything is black and white, and some details are in color, and it is clear that it was not handicraft with pencils, but when printed. so yes. And then a photo enlarger is more like the current lightroom than a photoshop. Lightroom and other converters are a photographer's tool, Photoshop is still more than a designer. I believe that all creativity has a right to exist.

    • Alexey

Is “smeared” on canvas not art? I think on the contrary, with the advent of Photoshop, photography is increasingly becoming an art. Its boundaries expand, many restrictions go away, the photographer becomes partly an artist, drawing in Photoshop. And then yes, sadness, for someone who is incapable of painting, albeit with the help of software.

      • Dmitriy

Painting on canvas is called art. If half of the photo is finished in Photoshop, then maybe you need to call it a picture, or a photo picture. Of course, you can’t sometimes do without retouching a photo, but there are limits to everything.

        • Dmitriy

And so this is tantamount to the one who is unable to sing, let him open his mouth under the plywood.

          • Alexey

Well, art photography is moving in the direction of photographic paintings, there is nothing wrong with that. Art or art? It depends on how to "smear", also in photography. Comparison with singing is somewhat attractive, but also, depending on what to believe under singing in this case. And listening to digital recordings of vocals, hasn't it become a norm in our life, this is plywood, or Netrebka every time to listen, call home, or go to a concert.

        • Arkady Shapoval

If we are talking about art, then there are no boundaries. There are only boundaries of perception.

  • Dmitriy

It turns out I'm not the only one to think so. This makes me happy.

  • Air force

Gee, how you all hurt) reality will be even worse for people. Hugo Corporation rivets drones. One drone flies to a location, and takes a picture at the right time of day and weather. And puts it in the bank of photos. It is on the one hand
On the other, you take a selfie on your smartphone. And feed to the cloud. The cloud counts and gives you the results. Everything. Elektroovets defeated people. We throw out our toys and go to beg

  • Dim

Stanislav Lem has a story about an electronic poet who brought to ordinary suicide, as he easily algorithmized their work and accordingly excelled them in all aspects of creativity.
The only moment that it soon seems impossible to get a photo of reality, but the only thing fantasized by the machine

  • Dim

There will be not a “Masterpiece” button, but a button to make “in trend” or something like that: you direct the device somewhere there or simply indicate the coordinates of the “picture”, the machine, according to the analysis of “likes”, quickly forms a photo session with any content

  • Dim

Quite recently there was a scandal with the “Cambridge Analyst”, if the elections can be calculated, then it’s primitive, completely satisfying the individual and his friends, a selfie for two times. I think this is the prospect of the very near future and no skill will overwhelm “big data” + psychology. Alas and ah
