In short

Super-Multi-Coated TAKUMAR 1: 1.4 / 50 ASAHI OPT. CO., JAPAN - an old classic 7-aperture lens on the Planar 6/XNUMX scheme. Nowadays, it can act as a creative, inexpensive lens.

From previous version Super-Takumar 1: 1.4 / 50 Asahi Opt. Co. Lens made in Japan (production codes 378, 37800, 37801, 37802, indicated on the MAN./AUTO switch) The Super-Multi-Coated TAKUMAR 1: 1.4 / 50 model (from this review) features more aperture blades, updated Super-Multi-Coated coating and two additional connections for automatic iris operation with compatible cameras.

One reason for the update Super-Takumar 1: 1.4 / 50 up to Super-Multi-Coated TAKUMAR 1: 1.4 / 50 became the camera's release in the same year Asahi Pentax Electro Spotmatic (or Asahi Pentax ES), aka Honeywell Pentax Electro Spotmatic (or Honeywell Pentax ES), which required upgraded lenses with M42 mounting thread to operate in automatic aperture priority mode. Modernization touched not only Super-Takumar 1: 1.4 / 50, but also many other Takumars.

Please note that the lens / lens bleaching from the viewing lens or the optical glass itself has turned yellow (closer to orange or brown), as shown in the picture below. Most likely this is due to thorium enlightenment or to the addition of thorium to the rear lens, which, or because of which, the initial transparency degrades. During real photography, such yellowing significantly affects the image quality, automatic white balance coping is not always good.

Important:

  1. There is a lot of information about its radioactivity (this is due to thorium enlightenment or the addition of thorium to the rear lens).
  2. Not all Super-Multi-Coated TAKUMAR 1: 1.4 / 50 lenses so terribly paint a picture in yellow / green (warm) color. Most likely yellowing depends on age or some other factors.
  3. The level of radiation, most likely, can not do anything bad to its owner. Bad can only happen if you wear Super-Multi-Coated TAKUMAR 1: 1.4 / 50 as a pendant a year or two.
  4. Automatic white balance copes well with yellowness, but using preset values white balance (daylight, shadow, etc.) make the picture just awful. Shooting with automatic white balance under mixed lighting conditions also produces very poor results.
  5. Some users try to fight yellowness with strong ultraviolet radiation, or in other ways. Look for information on the net, leave useful links in the comments.
  6. Despite the yellowing, the real apertureexpressed in T-steps fell weakly.

Super-Multi-Coated TAKUMAR 1: 1.4 / 50 well assembled, has full metal case. The focus ring has no rubberized inserts, rotates approximately 180 degrees. The ring travel is smooth and pleasant. For many Takumars, the smoothness of focusing is one of the best among all lenses of the past era. The original front cover without latches, just snug against the frame of the case, it can easily be removed with a random movement.

During focusing, the front retractable body does not rotate. Focusing occurs by moving the entire lens block.

Manual Takumaras with M42 x 1 / 45.5 thread can be divided into 4 types:

  1. Completely manual (in terms of installation exposure). Only one aperture control ring. Everything is done manually.
  2. Pre-set. Also manual (in terms of installation exposure), but with two aperture rings: settings and presets. Everything is done manually.
  3. Semi-automatic. Aperture ring + protrusion (pin) for aperture pusher + can be M / A (Man./Auto) aperture mode switch. In automatic mode, focusing is carried out at a fully open aperture. When the shutter is released, the aperture closes to the desired value and opens again. Exposure set manually.
  4. Fully automatic. Aperture ring + aperture mode switch + protrusion for the diaphragm pusher + additional protrusion (pin) + additional driver for transmitting the aperture value to the camera. Measurement exposure and focusing is carried out with the aperture fully open, the camera understands the value of the set aperture and sets the exposure corresponding to it. During shutter release, the aperture closes to the desired value and opens again.

On the mount side, fully automatic lenses such as the Super-Multi-Coated TAKUMAR 1: 1.4 / 50 from this review have an additional very small pinwhich is associated with the MAN./AUTO switch. This pin should not be confused with a conventional pin for automatically setting the desired aperture value when the shutter is released. The MAN./AUTO switch works only when this pin is pressed, for example, when the lens is attached to the camera, or when the rear protective cap is attached to clamp it. It is not necessary to try to change the position of the MAN./AUTO switch by force, otherwise it may cause damage.

  • Ilyas

    Thank you!

  • anonym

It is clear from where Helios 44m was ripped off ... .x

    • Rodion

There is nothing common in the design of lenses.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Takumar and Helios are structurally and optically heaven and earth. And a slight external similarity is just a coincidence.

    • Nikita

Helios 44 was ripped off by Carl Zeiss Jena Biotar

  • Rodion

Please note that the designated version is just thorium (it was exactly the same, checked with a dosimeter on occasion).
And its geometric luminosity is 1.4, but taking into account the light transmission - about 2.2-2.5, or even less. Of course, this is individual and can be corrected by irradiation with mercury UV. But I did not meet exact measurements.
The rest of the lens is chic, it has a very beautiful picture on the open. The bokeh is great.
However, whether anyone needs all this with such a T-aperture is a question, of course. I once refused in favor of 13 lep. Helios-44 with MS lenses (reviewed here).

    • Arkady Shapoval

The review option is a bit lighter than the Nikon 50 / 1.8 AF-S, because the T-stop in this instance is not bad

      • Serhiy Todoriuk

I had one, I gave a picture like a Kenon poltos at 2.0-2.2 on an open expopair, I just yellowed how terrifying it was. For a day of frying under UV (soft), yellowness disappeared and was no more than with the old white helios, but alas, the t-stop nifiga did not grow and the lens’s lumen was at least more neutral, but a light gray filter was wound in front ..

      • Rodion

IMHO, but T-stop is better to evaluate with manuals not linked by electronics. Relative to the standard with the light transmission coefficient known from the passport (Helios MS are good in this regard - they have close to 1). Then the conditions will be equal - different chips (from the adapter ring, from the branded glass, or even a missing chip) often change the operation of the exposure meter.

        • Serhiy Todoriuk

If you shoot in M, then nothing affects the work, compared with helios the result of expopair with kenon is the same.

          • Rodion

            All right.

  • anonym

yaschica ml 1,4 is better in color and sharpness

  • Michael

Arkady, typo: “… for automatic iris operation with compatible cameras.”
    Thanks for the review.

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Fixed

  • Beggar Pi

It is gratifying that takumarchiks go to the people on the reviews of Arcadia. Keep it up! And yes - I went too far on the 200ke ... Thanks for the review !!!

  • SKY HD

Good day. Thanks for the review. It was interesting. Tell your impressions of working with sharpness.

    • Arkady Shapoval

      I expressed them here.

  • SKY HD

Thanks. Could you recommend a fast fix at 40-50mm 1.4-2, which was nice and convenient to work with focus.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Which camera to work on? And immediately voice the budget

  • SKY HD

Kenon crop. (100d, 1100d, 350d). Budget - if it really helps to catch good shots, then up to the price of Canon 50 1.4. It seems to me that something old will give a more pleasant picture than modern ones. They're autofocus though. for example, I took 37a for myself - I was sooooo pleased. working with focus is a pleasure. (here too, if there is something 100-140mm faster than Jupiter and the same pleasant work would be grateful. the camera is the same)

    Senks in advance!

    • Ololoev

Take Helios 44 any. It is not so expensive. Through the adapter it already gets up on Canon quietly. f2, I think it will be enough for you, but more is already indecently more expensive.

  • anonym

There is one unpleasant feature of these Takumars, Yashiks, Geksanons, and so on - they are very fond of withdrawing from the parcels by the customs. Also, there is already infa about the lenses selected during screening at airports. In general, fixed gamma ray sensors make life difficult for photographers.

  • SKY HD

helios is not an option. tried it several times. There are 2 pieces. I don't get them into focus. maybe such an assembly came across. I do not know. almost by all the time .. or are they just so "harsh" ..

    • Ololoev

Look for Tair 11a ... f 2.8, but he is not for everybody. There is a review here too

    • Alexander

With a manual, you can normally get into focus only on close-ups such as a facial portrait or a flower. If the object is further than a couple of meters, then nothing is visible, you have to rely on the prompt in the camera, and this is a lottery. Arkady correctly said that if you don’t get Helios, then with 1.4 it will be even worse.

      • Sergos

this is a serious "advantage" of DSLRs - it is difficult to focus or impossible at all on manuals

  • SKY HD

I need a more expensive option. not in the sense that this one is cheap, but in the sense that you need 40-50 f1.4-2. 2.8 I do not consider .. but something Arkady is silent .. :)

    • Arkady Shapoval

And what can I say, if you didn’t get into Helios, then you won’t hit with 50 1.2 / 1,4 (it’s twice as difficult, because the aperture is twice as wide). Because I personally see only the path to autofocus options

    • Koba

I am very sorry, but what about the excellent Tamron 45 / 1.8 VC? In China, it can be bought for $ 220 for a version closer to the new one, and there is autofocus, and the optics are excellent, and the stabilizer is excellent, and the body is excellent ... And the open aperture is fully operational, and even sigma art is superior in sharpness, especially in the corners. And from manual Sears (Rikenon) 55 / 1.4 - but it is difficult to find, from expensive and elite - Voigtlander 58 / 1.4, but for 450 and for life. The Sigma 50 / 1.4 EX is also available for $ 200, also a great option with a working F1.4

      • Pokemon

For the money you specify, you can buy in the Russian Federation only Sigma 50 / 1.4 EX DG in a shabby condition. In good for $ 250-300.

  • anonym

I heard that the yellowness from the rear lens will go away if you hold the inverted lens for a day or two in the sunlight. Its UV, they say, removes yellowness. What do you say, photographers?

    • Pokemon

I treated one Sigma with a “blue” UV lamp. Medical devices do remove some yellowing. But you have to sit there for a long time. It will probably be more productive in the bright sun.

    • anonym

Yes, I completely removed from such yellowness. Mb more than a day or two. Back lens to the sun.

    • Novel

Any source of radiation removes yellowness, visible light, not only UV, will suit just like just sun. Powerful LEDs or on the balcony on a sunny day. Or even just at home outside the window, but for a long time.

  • Alexey de Paris

Just a great review! Excellent demonstration in the video version on YouTube. I now know for sure that having a Pentax SMC 50 mm f 1,7, this lens is no longer needed. In the open, well, very strong optical defects. Once again I was convinced that you should not expect a good lens from this model.

  • Andrey T.

If you like SMC Takumara, then the absolute gem of the line is 85 \ 1.8. Here it is also necessary to clarify what is meant by the "ideal pair", especially in relation to 50 mm, since in connection with fifty dollars, personal taste preferences are very significant. As for Biotar, the picture quality of the 17-blade version is so good that it deserves respect. Then it won't fall apart in your hands ...

  • Igor

RED RADIOACTIVE SPRAYING IS MY FAVORITE.

  • anonym

Great optics. Okay, comfortable, beautiful, reliable.
The yellowness disappeared in a day on the windowsill - in due time ..
Now in the south everything is much faster).
