Nikon 1 J3. Review from the reader Radozhiva

Review Nikon 1 J3 with lens Nikon 1 NIKKOR VR 30-110mm f / 3.8-5.6 IF Ashperical и Nikon 1 NIKKOR VR 10-30mm f / 3.5-5.6 IF ED specially for Radozhiva, prepared Alexey Ovoshchnikov.

Nikon 1 J3

Nikon 1 J3

Good afternoon, today I am publishing a review on a compact camera with interchangeable lenses from Nikon, as well as a Nikkor 30-110 F 3.8-5.6 VR telephoto lens. Compare J3 with J1 and, as far as possible, compare with the DSLRs, share my impressions.

I often update my photo park and this camera has already gone from me to another owner. However, the camera as a whole was liked and in any case deserves a review and recall.

The camera has several advantages.

The camera shoots well on the machine!

This is useful for those who do not want to bother at all, but I strongly recommend always shooting JPEG + RAW for white balance not very accurate, and JPEG from this camera stretches very poorly (which is normal). Here it is worth noting the possibility of shooting in RAW (file format at the output .NEF). However, I liked working with NEF from this camera only in my native Nikon converter. Fortunately, it can be downloaded from the official site or installed from the disk.

The screen is modern, bright, clear and readable outdoors.

Unfortunately the screen is not rotary. And that would be right here!

Menu and software shell

focused on those who do not know how to use cameras of the Nikon system, a simple shell for a beginner (but for me it's a minus).

Nikon 1 J3

Nikon 1 J3

Compact and lightweight

carcasses of the camera and all lenses manufactured under it. If not for this plus, then why bother with all this with the new line of mirrorless?

Silent shooting

(advantage over DSLRs and even over other lines of mirrorless cameras). The camera does not have the usual mechanical shutter and everything happens without sound. No 'clicks' and 'clicks'. In certain situations, this can be a plus.

As many people know, the entire line of Nikon 1 cameras are mirrorless cameras with their own unique mount, that is, using such a camera and a regular DSLR is not the same thing. The reviewed model does not replace a full-fledged DSLR for you. Do not look for a catch here, everything is so and I do not want to deceive anyone. It's just that the camera is greatly curtailed in functionality and, which is also very important, in ease of use by an advanced user (a knowledgeable amateur or professional photographer).

At one time, some photographers took this camera in addition to their DSLR, but this is already in the past. Years passed and everything fell into place. Even old D80 or D700 today they can work wonderfully for a professional, and this mirrorless miracle is a useful toy and is more suitable for girls and grandmothers. And a powerful modern processor does not help. My conclusion is based on a comparison of how it is controlled and how a particular camera responds to the user's wishes. With this baby you will go to the menu too often if you decide to change the shooting parameters and you will lose time. In general, this camera is cut in usability so much that it is too much even for a mirrorless camera. The same old Sony NEX 5 (and its variations) will be more comfortable.

But still, the camera is not bad for its segment. I will write only the most basic for potential users. The camera has a 14 megapixel sensor. This is more than enough for a amateur photographer. This is even a lot, given the more than modest size of this matrix itself. Comparing this camera and the older J1, I concluded that an increase in megapixels and, accordingly, a decrease in the size of a single pixel on the matrix did not degrade image quality. This is already good! Crop factor of this sensor 2.7 in relation to the full frame. This means that by multiplying 14.2 by 2.7^2 we get the number of megapixels at the same density in a full frame. It turns out 104.5 megapixels (more than Nikon D850, Nikon Z7). Hence the conclusion - the camera has simply prohibitive pixel density for its price segment. This can be useful for macro photography. Once I made a funny portrait of a dog and, having processed the highlights and shadows, I printed the frame on A3 format for a photo exhibition. When viewed on paper, I did not see a good transfer of fine details and small things. The camera produces real 14 megapixels, but a little work with shadows, even in the Nikon converter, spoils the photo greatly (noises immediately climb out of the shadows). The result - a very low dynamic range brings the camera closer to soap dishes and phone cameras in this parameter. Well, there are no miracles, but still it's a shame.

So dog! The first photo - there is an active D-Lightning and there are strong noises. The second photo is not.

A few more frames of the camera and lenses.

Nikon 1 J3

Nikon 1 J3

The camera has a retractable built-in flash. I liked the opportunity to direct the flash up and get the scattered reflected light pulse, but the power is not enough. Well, a small camera is a very low-power flash.

I really did not like the 10-30 whale from this camera. Just look at the photo at the end of the article. I don’t know what it is, it may have been a lot and have been using this lens inaccurately, but the quality is horrible.

Nikon 1 J3

Nikon 1 J3

The telephoto lens turned out to be just wonderful, although you need to get used to it and you should not expect miracles from it. The quality is at the level of the good old Nikkor 55-200 VR but there is one thing but! If you cover the diaphragm at least to F / 9, then the quality drops due to diffraction, and then more. A small sensor - small lenses, small megapixels in addition will help you see a drop in detail ...

The ergonomics of the camera are very simple, the right side is completely free of connectors and additional controls.

Nikon 1 J3

Nikon 1 J3

On the left side there are activator flashes, communication ports with a computer are covered with plastic plugs.

In general, this is a logical continuation of the amateur line, a good, useful toy. Investing in a Nikon 1 system and buying high-aperture optics on the J3 for hundreds or thousands of euros is not a very good choice. May those who did this forgive me, but I am sure that these people are few.

In the process of writing this review, I recalled J1 and compared with J3 in work. I got the impression that the developers made the J3 even more amateur by redesigning the menu so that all the more or less advanced settings (at least viewing bar charts) are hidden away and you just do not use them.

  • Dima

Did you really only “test” it during your ownership and didn't take a single really good photo?

    • Alexey Paris, author of the review

Yes) I shot very little on it. But in the review there is a portrait of a dog, it turned out pretty well.
I have a lot of cameras and optics for different systems and used it just for fun.

      • anonym

        Lucky Dog.

  • zengarden

Some photos have a noticeable tild-shift effect; Is this software made by camera?
And some like through a muddy glass - such as a soft effect?
In general, an advanced soap dish for travelers ...

    • Alexey Paris, author of the review

both are filters from the camera. The 10-30 lens was not in the best condition and was soapy. Information on what was shot under each photo is imprinted.

  • Pokemon

    Fu Fu Fu.
Familiar led on compactness and changed d90 to 1j4.
Horror. Micra4 / 3 and crop / 1.5 are an order of magnitude promising and matrices give a normal DD for their sizes. And here, even on an iPhone, a photo can be more successful than on this horror from Nikon. The unit is failure. It was necessary to unite with the m4 / 3 consortium. But no.

  • Andrei

Damn, not a single standing foty! That's what a life-giving machine does.
The quality is comparable to the soap dishes of the beginning of the zero, some shame.

    • Alexey Paris, author of the review

I do not agree, the quality is comparable to the advanced soap dishes from kenon and sony of the last three or four years (2013-2015). They are also comparable in price. The fact that the soap dishes of the beginning of 2000 showed did not go to any comparison.

  • Andrei

It seems that in some photos about the lens, the finger was wiped off after the pie

"A modern processor does not help her in this"
“I concluded that the increase in megapixels” (comma)
“I once made a funny portrait of a dog”

Thanks for the review. Really a soap dish-soap dish

    • Alexey Paris, author of the review

Thanks for the corrections, you are always very attentive and it is very nice and helpful.

  • UstasFritZZZ

A bunch of mistakes, some kind of slurred story. Until the end did not master.

  • Andrei

Well, why did you attack a person? He tried, did, showed the "charms" of the camera. And you - fuu, uzhosnah ... What are your claims to Alexey?

  • Sergei

It would be interesting to compare with the Sony RX 100, the cat. also an inch matrix. Thanks for the review.

  • Alexander

Indeed, why did they attack the person ...? He tried and made the review as it is, honest ... No need to get mad with fat ... Make claims to Nikon ... This camera is the top of an unsuccessful device ... Why was it made ...? Everyone has something like that and they needed ... Why ...? Immediate sales - that is, just selfish interest ... And nothing else ...

    • Alexey Paris, author of the review

      Thank you, smiled).

    Nikon 1 J3 - game for women)))

For the first time I am reconciled, but mirror-like photo cameras - that quick vibir!

London-Paris is once again trying to squeeze the creator out of itself. If the photo did not work out ... Maybe go into the fishing line?

    • anonym

Read in lePku ...))) or applied something maybe. Sadness is melancholy.

  • Artem

Indistinct photos, adds an incomprehensible story. Honestly, it's no longer funny to read that. The author clearly has problems with his hands, because so far he has not shown anything in any review, maybe the camera is not "" "shit" and the hands do not grow from there? There is a profile branch on one profile forum there and something is squeezed out of such a camera, and you will excuse me for === if you take a picture, like it will do.
Why photo with camera processing? To show what? nonsense in general
And a request to Arkady, do not publish more of this author, nor the correct narration, nor normal photos

    • Arkady Shapoval

Thank you, I heard a wish

    • Vladimir

And where can I read your review? Or better take this camera and show how to do a review, with the right photos and text. I think Arkady will post your review here. The easiest way to water a person is g *** ohm. Unlike many, he put his work on display. And here you are, instead of telling what is wrong and how to fix it, you start to make a pro out of yourself.
This summer I met a photo blogger Sergei Dole. Maybe someone heard about him. So he did not hang around, but suggested what and how. Although his level is much higher than mine and I think many of you. Help others and you will be counted.
Arkady thanks for giving the opportunity to other people to try to do a review. I think someone in life, this can come in handy.

      • Arkady Shapoval

It's my pleasure. I think, at least in the comments, grains of truth will slip here.

  • alexey_laa

A drone camera like this is probably a good fit (good combination of light weight and a larger sensor). It is also known about Nikon 1 cameras that they have a high shooting speed (15 fps photos, 1200 fps video) - interesting for active and dynamic shooting.

The review may be weak, but the author was able to tell something about his experience of use.

I would like the site page “Reviews from Radozhiva's readers” to have some recommendations for authors to create high-quality reviews.

    • Michael

For the drone, a lot is not needed, it’s heavy and remote control just can’t do it.
It seems to me that hanging a bayonet on an inch is the height of stupidity. Not the type of user to have more than one lens

  • Alexey de Paris (author of this review)

I was somewhat indignant at the presence of extremely negative and abusive comments. There is a feeling that all the writers have autumn aggravation and severe depression. Yes, I wrote a somewhat careless review from a grammatical point of view, so rarely I write something in Russian. But otherwise, what can be the claims to me? An amateur camera and filmed everything in passing. You very much confuse the desires of the photographer and the capabilities of the camera. Have you been waiting for studio portraits with professional lighting at the end of the article? Can you imagine the model's face when she sees this pindyurka? The photographs show what the camera will give out in everyday use in the hands of a novice photographer. This is a short review because there is a detailed review from Arcadia on the Nikon 1J1 check it out. It contains the technical part, that review was written about the new camera, and this review describes the experience with this camera and the fact that the camera is not for an honest photographer. Camera to play around and drove. This is written at the very beginning. The point of the review is to show real possibilities in everyday use. You wanted me to send the wedding to this miracle of technology and give such a result to people for money? No need to squeeze out of amateur technology what it was not designed for. Here in France nobody normal does that. Now for sure. You can buy an old professional D300 camera and fifty kopecks for it at the cost of a Nikon 1 J camera ... and you shoot with pleasure. Do you understand at all the train of my thoughts? I am not writing specifically for you, I am writing this all for the person who chooses the first camera and after your comments may think that I have not revealed the potential of this miracle of technology. On cameras of this series, even video is written worse in quality than on a modern average smartphone. It's just such a toy, your murmur is just chatter and you can mislead people. And this is not good here at all.

    • Arkady Shapoval

In the countries of the former CIS, commentators are not as polite as in the west. Read comments always need to be adjusted for this feature.
I did not notice any abusive comments here, this is prohibited by the rules of the Rainbow :)

      • Alexey de Paris (author of this review)

Or maybe we will begin to move to a new level of courtesy? Maybe it's worth a try? Or will we align ourselves with those who want to slide even lower? to the level of complete misunderstanding and empty aggression?

        • Arkady Shapoval

This is a good start, of course. The author must always be ready for any criticism

          • anonym

There are many people who could write their review on some subject that is available but prefers not to do this, preferring only criticism of others, in any case, I like that this is a free site, even if the review is not perfect, people spent their time on it

        • Valentine

Alexey, do not read the comments. In the comments, every expert and professional. Whoever really needs it will see and understand the useful information from this review. Other reviews, who are not enough of this, are also not prohibited from reading. This is not the first article where criticism is greater than the review itself, and not the last. Meanwhile, the blog has existed for a long time and enjoys authority among its readers. Therefore, write - it's great when the information is different, presented by different people, from different countries.

    • Good M

Do you know what I'll tell you? About exacerbation is to honey workers. And about the fact that you do not know how - so at least try to remove something worthwhile. And not immediately turn on vsmysle - and Cho I'll take you here if the camera is shit. Chet pomoYmu substitution of concepts. The fact that the camera was slag all imagined without your passages. Well, I would try at least a couple of frames not to be able to expose. Arkady over there gets acquainted with mammoths 40-50 years old and nothing - we read and look not sick at least.

      • Mish $$$ OK M

As you correctly pointed out, yes - disgustingly poisonous. Well, if Paris doesn’t bring me anything, I burst into tears without reading to the end. And yes, call me bad, remembering to sprinkle ashes on my head.
And I have a shit phone for 40 ye ... I went to rub the rope - the world will never be the same again!

  • anonym

Nasim Mansurov received good photos with something similar. I don’t remember exactly, but it’s better to stay away from this subject preferring crop Kenon or Nikon in the sense of crop 1,5 or 1,6

  • dragon yes not snape

Friends, I'm sorry that is off topic. Need some advice. Black Friday broke out and the d610 costs the same as the d7200. I almost decided to buy the D7200 because of the advanced aftofocus, cool video and incredibly malleable ravine. And here it seems like you can take a simple fullframe for the same money. For the purposes of an advanced amateur. What to take? Really unsolvable dilemma.

    • Pokemon

For what the soul lies more, then take it.
Well, it depends on the availability of lenses and needs.

    • Arkady Shapoval

      I advise d610

    • Alexey de Paris (author of this review)

I would advise 610 if the price is the same. The camera is better in highlights. It can compete in the quality of the photo with a professional D800. Do you have full-frame lenses?

    • anonym

      Definitely 610.

      • dragon yes not snape

Thank you so much for the advice !! I take d610.

  • peter

If there are normal crop lenses then the d7200 is the best choice.
If there is nothing sensible then d610. But all the same, with d610 then you will want something better.

    • Arkady Shapoval

      and d7200 does not want?

      • peter

It is quite possible, but as I wrote "If there are normal crop lenses, the d7200 is the best choice."
If I shot portraits alone, then the d610 is a great choice.
For reporting I’d better take d7200 (autofocus is clearly better), for the subject and drains I’d better shoot at 7200 (sharpness due to the lack of a filter and color due to the matrix is better). But here the presence of zoom sigma lenses with aperture of 1,8 helps to unleash the potential of the crop.

  • peter

It is necessary to take at least d750

  • Yuriy75

I have been using Nikon3 V1 for 1 years, it’s not bad for constant wear, but everything spoils the standard 10-30 mm lens. Loops are flying, apparently due to the folding design. In terms of sharpness and color, there are no complaints about it. The camera has 10 megapixels, the ditches stretch well, better than the old Canon 1100D.

  • SashOK

Thanks for the good review, not a very good camera;)
To the author, do not pay (those) attention to all sorts of losers who can only throw mud at someone else's work. Their destiny is to take a picture of your shit and talk about what purchased pictures they get. Complete idle talk!

By the way, why did Arkady stop doing camera reviews? The same Nikon D7500, D500 and many others are waiting to be tested by Arkady;)

    My impressions of J2

  • barabas

from the middle of the 2nd page - a better photo (got used to it). allows the use of c-mount lenses without cropping

  • Pawel

The review is superficial, but this is not a DPPreview to disassemble each menu item, for the initiative and help to newcomers in the choice - respect, the photo was arranged for me, I don't know why the experts were furious. I noticed that basically people are divided into two types: some say the Camera is a barn, it is better to shoot with a smartphone, while others say that it is a quite suitable device, you can also take film glasses and you can put film glasses) for me I would buy a sensor from D40 in such a case without hesitation (eh dreams-dreams)
