7artisans 55mm f / 1.4

Hello. My name is Alexey. I want to talk about the recently acquired 7artisans 55mm f / 1.4 lens for the Micro 4/3 system. The lens was purchased. here.

I don’t do photography professionally, but for several years I’ve been photographing at jazz concerts. First it was a jazz club, then invitations from performers to shoot their concerts. I needed to experimentally master such a shooting, adapt to the lighting, choose the technique - the camera and lenses.

The 7artisans 55mm f / 1.4 lens is an inexpensive lens with a large aperture and manual focus. It is produced by the newly formed (in 2016) Chinese company 7artisans. The lens is available for mirrorless systems with mount E-mount (Sony), X-mount (Fujifilm), EF-M (Canon), Micro 4/3 (Panasonic, Olympus, etc.).

Design features

The optical scheme on the manufacturer's website is designated as a "Gaussian scheme", more precisely, a "double Gauss scheme" - a general scheme, which includes the "Planar", "Biotar" schemes, and is used in many models of lenses from well-known companies.

The stroke of the focus ring is about 120º, the stroke of the aperture ring is about 60º. The focus ring is wide. The ring is located closer to the bayonet mount. The aperture ring rotates smoothly, without clicking on the aperture value.

Focusing is carried out by moving the entire lens block, the rear lens also moves. When focusing, the front lens does not rotate.

The diaphragm consists of 14 blades. Petals are gray, matte.

The manufacturer claims that the lens has low chromatic aberration.

Impressions and experience of use

After unpacking, you immediately pay attention to the excellent appearance of the lens and a beautiful packaging box.

The mechanical design of the lens is not bad, the assembly is high-quality, but there are some signs indicating an inexpensive model: the focus ring in the “infinity” position does not clearly rest against the limiter, the limiter is somewhat springy and bends.

The focus rings and aperture move smoothly, viscously. The focus ring is wide. The ring is located closer to the bayonet mount, but it’s convenient to focus on the focus. Since the aperture ring does not have fixed positions, this does not allow the aperture to be set to the touch. Another unpleasant feature - when you rotate the aperture ring, you can touch the focus ring, and bring down the focus.

On my copy of the lens in the extreme position of the focus ring, a slightly noticeable flight for infinity occurs.

Image Features on f / 1.4

When shooting with aperture 1.4, the image has less sharpness and depth of field, less contrast. The image looks “blurred”, with a “soft effect”. This is more noticeable on remote objects (buildings):

Important notice! In the above photos, the image on aperture 1.4 is faded because it is overexposed, because the camera set the minimum shutter speed of 1/4000 and ISO200. It was possible to enable low ISO (ISO 100) in the settings, but I noticed this problem after shooting.

Aperture 1.4 makes it harder to focus. If this is a portrait, then the person in the frame may shift, and will come out mildly due to the small depth of field.

Having tried to take a portrait photo on aperture 1.4, I noticed that at a greater shooting distance (about 5 m), the photo does not look so impressive, although there is noticeably more blur in the blur zone. With a small shooting distance (about 2 m.), The volume and separation of plans are much better felt in the photo, and the soft effect, which reduces sharpness, is less noticeable.

I also really liked shooting subjects from a short distance (about 1m.) - at aperture 1.4 there is good sharpness, the volume and depth of space are well conveyed. In the samples below you can see a photo.

On contrasting objects outside the central part of the frame, edging of the same color, shifted to the center of the frame, may be noticeable:

On some frames at aperture 1.4 on contrasting objects a slight violet fringing was observed, which is absent at aperture 2.8:

An example of a f / 1.4 potter:

The photo was taken from a distance of about 1,5 m. Lighting - a chandelier, fluorescent lamps 2x18 W. The front is backlit by a camera flash, the flash power in the settings is reduced by 1EV. Processed from RAW file, color corrected, sharpness added. Noise reduction is the default. RAW Converter - SilkyPix Developer Studio 4.4 SE. Intra-chamber .jpg without processing is at the end of the review among the test photos.

At aperture 2,0, sharpness improves markedly, portraits look normal. Increased depth of field, less likely to fall out of the field of sharpness. Aperture 2,0 is also convenient for focusing, i.e. In portrait mode, you can set the aperture to 2,0, and no longer touch the aperture ring.

At aperture 2.8, sharpness becomes good in the center of the frame and satisfactory at the edges, and is suitable for shooting buildings, street photography.

The lens normally tolerates side light. I noticed a flare in the image if there was a bright street lamp nearby, or if the subject was dark, and a lighted window or sky was near the edge of the field of view.

Backlight (soft sun behind the clouds) does not produce large flares in the field of the frame.

Bright sources of light in the frame (spotlights, car headlights) on a covered diaphragm give 14-ray stars - small and quite beautiful.

Sharpness test

There is no mark for aperture 11 on the lens, which I did not immediately notice. :) When shooting a test series, the whole range of aperture values on the lens went through. Thus, there are test shots for aperture 1.4, 2, 2.8, 4, 5.6, 8, 16. The information content of the test does not suffer from this.

Below is a test photo (mosaic on the wall), and individual photos - crop at 100% magnification for the lower left corner and the central part of the photo for different aperture values.

Advantages and disadvantages

Positive aspects of the lens:

  • High aperture
  • Lens design suitable for portraiture
  • 14-blade aperture
  • Compactness
  • Metal frame
  • Low cost

Negative sides:

  • The absence of a diaphragm position lock does not allow you to set it to the touch without looking
  • Aperture 11 is not indicated on the aperture scale. If there was no space, one could draw a dot or a stroke there, as is sometimes done in such cases
  • The focus ring can be touched by hand when setting the aperture, and to bring down the hardened focus
  • The part of the frame near the mount that you can grab the lens with by hand is small, and this complicates its installation on the camera

Photo examples

Below are test photos - in-camera .jpg without processing, data was added exposure. Since for a manual lens in EXIF the aperture value is not saved, this data was added manually from memory and from notes when shooting, and there may be inaccuracies.

Conclusions

The 7artisans 55mm f / 1.4 lens is a good and inexpensive lens suitable for portrait photography on crop cameras and for shooting in low light. Aperture 1.4 is conditionally working (weaker sharpness, more noticeable distortion). When shooting at close range, aperture of 1.4 can have good sharpness and the photo looks very impressive.

The lens can be an alternative to modern autofocus lenses. Advantages compared to modern autofocus lenses: the cost is 2,5 times lower, aperture may be higher. Disadvantages: less perfect optics, design, weaker image quality. Lack of autofocus can complicate focusing and reduce responsiveness. The lack of an image stabilizer increases the percentage of bad frames due to camera shake. However, the new mirrorless cameras are well suited for manual (non-autofocus) lenses, provide image stabilization and facilitate focusing.

For the same purposes as the 7artisans 55mm f / 1.4, you can use old manual lenses, but they can have problems with the state of optics and mechanics. Also, such a lens should have a margin of resolution for working with crop format sensors. Advantages of old manual lenses - the popular (at one time) and proven 50mm f / 1.4 model can be bought at a lower price (1,5 times).

An important point. There are many lens options on the well-known Internet commerce sites for the low price of obscure brands, or even “noname”. Some of them are described for video surveillance systems, some may be imitations and have little to do with real lenses for photography. I had the same situation when buying, and I did not want to buy a pseudo-lens. In my case, I drew attention to the available reviews, a review on the Internet, a group for this model on the Flickr website with examples of photos. I also noticed that the manufacturer’s website has links to official stores on AliExpress, eBay, Amazon, where it can be seen that many orders have been made and there are many positive reviews.

I wish you all successful shots.

Comments: 95, on the topic: 7artisans 55mm f / 1.4 lens. Review from the reader Radozhiva

  • Michael

"Weaker image quality" - somehow hurts the ear)
Thanks for the review. Interesting thing

    • alexey_laa

Well yes. You just had to write “the image quality is weaker”. And so it turns out that there is weak, and here weaker. Then I got confused in my own wording.

  • Max kotov

What can I say. At 2.8 it is tolerant, at more open everything is strange, most likely not. Bokeh is generally fine, but nothing interesting. You can take a picture of him, I would not have left such a crop for myself.

  • Limbo

A good review :) Do not tell me by the way how did you edit and fit the exif?

    • alexey_laa

Exposure data here is manually added using GIMP. I looked for suitable utilities, but still, there is no diaphragm data from the manual lens in EXIF, and you need to enter it manually.

  • Sergei

It looks good, soundly. On this, the IMHO dignity ends. Domestic Helios and Jupiters (for less cost) will give a more interesting result.

    • alexey_laa

For comparison (pictures on aperture 2.8):

      7artisans 55mm f / 1.4 (https://ibb.co/cQh0RK) and Helios-81H 2/50 (https://ibb.co/h6FWYz)

Helios is probably sharper. But on my copy there are some uninteresting sparkles inside, because of them halos appear around bright objects in the frame. I went to the store of the Arsenal plant (there is still some equipment there). The seller said that this is inside the problem with the anti-reflective coating (sprinkled?). In the same store, he showed me another copy of such Helios. I looked, and inside, too, I noticed a little such sparkles. I thought - maybe such Helios at this age already all have such problems?

      • Max kotov

With Soviet lenses, how lucky, the scatter is big, alas. 7artisans looks more contrast, the resolution is similar. But I still don’t understand what to do with it at 1.4, unless you say that such an artistic design :)
        Thanks for the review, here!

        • alexey_laa

Aperture 1.4 is also unusual for me. I have not used this lens myself for long. But when shooting at a concert, a large aperture is needed quite often. In some scenes, the lighting is strong, and a lens with a normal aperture is suitable for shooting. But if the lighting is weak, then an aperture of 2-2,8 is needed. The shutter speed can only be increased if there is no movement in the frame. You can raise the ISO, but the noise is most noticeable in dark frames. It can be especially difficult with a drummer who sits in the far dark corner of the stage and at the same time actively moves. Another complication is that on longer lenses, camera shake is noticeably stronger. And the image stabilizer can help with camera shake, but it will not help when shooting fast moving objects, so that there is no blur, you still need to shorten the shutter speed.

          • Max kotov

Yes, everything is not easy with concerts, you have to shoot at a high ISO and use noise reduction in post-processing. From not relatively bright, I would probably recommend Zenitar-M 50 1.7. Bokeh is pleasant for portraits, it costs about the same as 7artisans, but I have not tried it on mirrorless mirrors. My copy slightly colors the picture, but the resolution and the picture itself are pleasing.

    • Michael

Well, they are darker. And Jupiters are not the focal ones either. Not classmates at all

      • Andrei Other

which are not the ones? 50mm instead of 55mm?
        10% does not affect anything.

what kind of luminosity is it in question, is it necessary for an acceptable quality to close the aperture to 2,8?

        • Michael

85 and 135 are not at all 50. Acceptable quality has no relation to aperture ratio. Moreover, Helios on the open is also weak, although 2.0

          • Andrei Other

And why do you compare portraiture with staffer?
            If you need 50, then take Helios 44 - 58 \ 2 or Jupiter 8 - 50 \ 1,8 as the most budget options.
If you add a little, then Olympus is 50 \ 1.8. He cost me 20 euros with the delivery.

            • Michael

It’s you who are writing about Jupiter and 50mm, and they (with the exception of perverse RF) are all from 85 mm.

              • Rodion

In the sense of? 7partisans for mirrorless, how long has Jupiter-8 50/2 and Jupiter-3 50 / 1.5 for M39 an Orthodox perversion of steel?

              • Michael

There, it seems, not M39, but a contact, and even without a focuser.

              • Andrei Other

There, it seems, not M39, but a contact, and even without a focuser.
                =============================================

Oh how! How did Jupiter 8 be placed on Zorkiy before?

            • Michael

And acceptable quality with Helios will not work, so no difference

  • Rodion

I wonder if he is better than the old manual trash of the same class? In general, in terms of bokeh, the optical quality is so-so. Even on M4 / 3, the edges are clearly bad.

    • Max kotov

Well, covered up is tolerant yet.

    • zengarden

And what else can be drawn from a six-lens double Gauss?
I have another lens (probably of the same manufacturer, they are all done in one place, just the names are different), 25mm f1.8 - there the optical scheme is different (more complicated), and the picture is very decent for the Chinese.

      • Max kotov

zengarden, I have one question. Why 1.4 to buy better? It was possible to make this glass 1.8 or 2, and without these strange parodies of soft focus and HA.

        • zengarden

Because this 1.4 on aperture 2-2.8 will probably show a better result than 1.8 / 2 on the same 2.8. But it is not exactly :)
In general, I would not have bought one. Moreover, there are Samyang 85 / 1.4 and Nikkor 105 / 2.5.

  • TSerg

Vdyachnіst to the author for looking around the whole warehouse!
Tell me what? Marveling at the photo, I’ll say that I don’t buy bi for myself. Practically for the same amount, because for a little more you can add manual Takumar, Rokkor chi Topkor. Little plastic, bokeh, sharpness on the screen will be very good. Transfer to the required bayonet is also on the right of the technology. Tom had a good idea of adding RE.Auto-Topcor 1: 1.4 f = 5,8 cm Tokyo Kogaku to the last rosi.
Before the speech, I’ll look at the whole campus on the site of Arkadiy until the last hour, it’s not a big deal. But I deserve credit for respect.

  • Peter Sh.

Thank you, Alexey. Very good review. Everything seems to be in order with the lens.

As for resolution for modern matrices, this is of course a myth. Matrices have nothing to do with it. It’s enough to imagine what kind of detail was supposed to be on the film in order to print on A2, for example. But it doesn’t matter.
    Good Luck!

In the afternoon, in the sun, F1,4 (cats for example or architecture) is not the most successful use case, but for rooms or night shooting it is quite normal. Its luminosity is intended for this.

    • Andrei Other

There will always be a lack of light. Aperture is designed for narrow depth of field. If there is not enough light, it must be found.

      • Michael

After all, no, and again no. Tell It to Reporting and Sports Photographers

  • Alexey de Paris

Another toy from China ... Maybe it will do for a video, but not for a serious portrait shooting ... you will have a marriage rate of 95 + ... landscape, reportage is inconvenient with such a focus on a small sensor ... you can cover it on a subject ... and that's it) better buy an original autofocus 50 f1,8 and don't worry….

    • Andrei Other

      I can not plus

  • Pawel

I did not try to photograph with all kinds of Focus pickings there, but it’s rather difficult to aim at 50 1.4 on a crop, more or less on a full frame.

    • alexey_laa

Yes, on f / 1.4 a lot of frames are obtained with inaccurate focus. When shooting with manual focus, it is better to periodically sharpen again. Sometimes at a concert, when a successful composition comes across in a frame, you make a series of several frames at once, and then you see that the whole series does not fall into focus. Those. it’s better to take a couple of shots, focus on sharpness, do more.

      • Pawel

By the way, Nikon has such a chip as an aftofocus trap, i.e. press the shutter and turn the focus, as soon as the confirmation is triggered, the trigger is made, the truth works only with the chip)

        • Michael

And not with everyone (And not on all models ...

        • Rodion

Almost anyone has it, only it works frankly so-so. At least Canon doesn't help.

      • Good man

So what prevents the external HD viewer from adding? You will be guided at 0.8 ... You shoot a video - well, work like a human ...

  • Andrei Other

The lens on the open is not working. It is better to buy with a working 2,0 or even 2,8 than a non-working 1,4. It will turn out cheaper, less and easier.

    • alexey_laa

I can not compare with the expensive f / 1.4, although it would be interesting.

And I can not compare with the expensive 1,4.
Comparison with cheap 1,8-2,8 is enough for me

        • alexey_laa

I could also buy a f / 1.8-2.0 lens in good condition, or a Chinese new one. Panasonic's autofocus is unlikely, it is much more expensive. I chose this one because I was wondering what kind of photos would come out at f / 1.4. Well, I hoped, of course, that it would be possible to get good photos at f / 1.4.

Interesting test photo - sculpture “boy on pillows”, photo in original resolution: https://radojuva.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/review-sample-P1050591.jpg Here the aperture is 1.4 and the shooting distance is ten meters. In my opinion, if it is processed in the usual way with sharpening and contrast, it should be pretty decent. Although I have no doubt that on the Lumix G 42.5mm f / 1.7 ASPH. POWER OIS will be better.

          • anonym

As for "should be pretty decent" - will not, there is nothing to process

            • Peter Sh.

What can be processed and what is not decided by the photographer himself. He also decides on which equipment and optics to shoot. And no one has the right to dictate how to do this. Even the most famous Internet critic Anonymous.

              • anonym

“Our people love everything… ..” S. Shnurov. The technique, actively discussed over the past couple of years, is completely perplexing. Everything, of course, is clear - both with the ruble exchange rate and with other things, but not to the same extent.

                Totally agree with you.

              • anonym

Increasing sharpness and contrast (or even saturation) in pictures taken with weak optics is like throwing a Three Seven port wine. In the sense of a complete misunderstanding of the basis of the process ...

              • Peter Sh.

And how else can you comprehend all the wisdom of processing, if not through your own experience?

              • anonym

The author's own experience of the review is quite clear from the words: "if it is processed in the usual way with increasing sharpness and contrast." First, when working with high-quality optics, it is not always necessary to add sharpness during processing. Secondly, this applies even more to contrast. It's easy to ruin a picture in this manner, but not everyone can improve.
Of course, if you like the style of “pluck your eyes out”, you can shoot with the Seven Artisans, or anything. The main thing is then to drive the sliders in the editor all the way. Regarding a specific picture of a boy on pillows - there is no sharpness in principle. And if it is not there, no editor will take it out of his hat - there will be one embarrassment, and nothing more.

            • alexey_laa

Here, processed: UM100-P1050591 The sharpness and distortion is comparable to the frame at f / 2.8

              • anonym

I told you - nothing but embarrassment will work. In the f1.4-2.8 range, this lens looks downright bad. We have already written above that it is better to have real 2.8 than such 1.4. And there is such a Sigma for comparable money. Also not to say that the pearl of creation, but not horror-horror-horror ...

              • Peter Sh.

Here is an example of the most common misconception among amateur photography.

Our viewer does not see the sharpness in the photo. He does not see noise, a littered horizon, a haze from backlight and a nut in the bokeh. The viewer sees the composition and colors. It's the most important.

But in the vast majority of all posts about photography on the Internet they discuss how sharp the brick wall turned out in the picture, black and white stripes on a piece of paper or some kind of weeds in the garden.

              • anonym

Not “ours,” but “yours”. The viewer is different.

Peter, no one disputes that composition and colors are more important than anything else. But why overpay for a non-working 1,4 and carry this fool when you can buy a small and light 1,8-2,8 for less money?

Why buy a Mercedes with mechanics from the Cossack?

              • anonym

Moreover, in the above photo, instead of color, there is solid dirt.

              • Max kotov

In sharpness, here is an example of a slightly sharper frame on crop)
Soviet optics, who guesses, well done!

              • Andrey T.

The most common misconception among amateur photography is that at first cameras are purchased that are not at all sharpened for quality photos as a priority, and then searches for optics for them that can solve at least some photo tasks without ruining the photographer begin.

Saint you are a man Andryusha golden words !!! And the error of some of the constant here is that while we are sitting on the couch and clicking on the mouse, we write soap that will change someone's life in the bud. Focusing on photos from sites.

Max Kotov, Mir-1 or Mir-10 or something?

              • Max kotov

Rodion, past. I can just confess if necessary.

                Zenitovsky fifty fifty 1.7

              • Max kotov

Not a zenith, his bokeh is softer though.

              • Andrey T.

You can argue about bokeh, but image defects that form in the so-called. "Picture", look pretty good.

              • Max kotov

There is one, Andrey. But defects with the soul;)

              • Andrey T.

And I would say - with a wide soul :) I have not taken pictures with Soviet optics for a long time - I have lost the habit of eyes, so there is such a strange feeling - “and here I am again standing on Lenin Street, and I have déjà vu from time to time”.

              • Max kotov

Hahaha)) I understand. But, something in them was native. I sin, periodically I carry with me a little, but I use it. You can sort them out for a long time. Industar 50-2 it was.

              • Andrey T.

The fact that it is 50 mm was understandable. And I didn’t deal with this Industar, so my chances were zero. The overwhelming majority of Soviet lenses have an unpleasant (for me) combination: where they are sharp, they are sharp to roughness, and where they are outside the depth of field, they are simply nonexistent. This is obtained by "iron on glass", uncomfortable for the eye. I will keep silent about color, bokeh and other goodies.

              • Andrey T.

PS I looked carefully at the photo again - yes, the circle of suspects could have been narrowed down to “Soviet \ 50 mm \ tessar”. Further my erudition, due to lack of practical interest, still did not extend.

        wait 56mm sigma

  • Rodion

In general, thank you very much for the review - few people here will mention the lens, and then really write something.

    • alexey_laa

Yes, some people did. I think a little later to write a review. I myself know more about my lens now - there is benefit.

Hello, people, sorry for the offtopic, but urgent business. Tell me, I encountered such a problem. I leave the fully charged batteries in the booster, in the morning both sat down to zero. ((((The third time on the set and such crap is happening! Whoever came across, tell me how to be.

Useful review. You need to know not only what is worth buying, but also what is not worth buying.

      This is too categorical)

      • Alexey

This is so real. I saw nothing in the picture of this lens worthy, even any small highlight - "gray as a prison uniform". The picture of the Industry you cited is better.

Thanks to the author and Arkady for an interesting review!
For a long time with interest I looked at the glass of 7 partisans on Ali. It seemed to me that the lens is damp and soon there will be a new version, taking into account errors.
It’s a pity this glass is not ff, there would be a suitable budget fifty dollars for A7.
Reviews on new Chinese glasses are very interesting!

  • alexey_laa

A couple of recent photos on f / 2.8. The lens was bought to replace the Helios-81N 2/50. On Helios, I also basically shot on f / 2.8, because he is sharper then.

    Photo on 7artisans 55mm f / 1.4, aperture 2.8, .jpg without processing:

buy manual Chinese fifty dollars, money down the drain IMHO
helios 77m-4 with a lens 1.8, and a working open aperture is much cheaper, and the result is better at times. Why buy 1.4 that do not work as they should. Overview ok no lens

    • Andrey T.

      Overview is normal?
      “Conclusions: 7artisans 55mm f / 1.4 is a good and inexpensive lens ...”

  • Sergei

It would be nice to compare the picture from a normal used Jupiter-3 with this subject.
In all aspects (permission, bokeh, back-lighting, etc.).
The price difference is very small - 7700 rubles for Partizan and 6-8 thousand for Jupiter.
And on Sony crop with 24 megapixels, and not on Micro4 / 3.

  • alexey_laa

I photographed a Christmas tree on my lens today: https://photos.app.goo.gl/PZ4LRn16bt7BvLoN6 All photos except the first one are on 7artisans 55mm / f1.4, aperture 2.8. The first photo (general plan) is of the whale.
