Nikon D3500

The main differences from Nikon D3400

  • D3500 is a newer model, released 2 years (30.08.2018/XNUMX/XNUMX) after the announcement Nikon D3400 (17.08.2016)
  • D3400 Available in black or red. D3500 is available only in black.
  • The D3500 has a modified control, the buttons to the left of the display have moved to the right side. Removed programmable 'FN' button, flash control button elsewhere
  • redesigned (another main selector, speakers and other minor changes in another place)
  • D3500 is 30 grams lighter
  • D3500 removed camera controls using inexpensive infrared remote control ML-L3
  • D3500 on one battery charge makes 350 shots more than D3400 (1200 shots versus 1550 shots)
  • several new functions have been added to the D3500 processing menu, such as image alignment and comparison of two images, several other minor changes to the menu
  • perhaps there are other significant differences (but, most likely, they are still not there)

Recommendations for choosing an amateur Nikon DSLR camera and lenses / peripherals for it can be found in my post about 'Choosing an Nikon Amateur Camera'.

  • Sergei

Livelier than all living and fashionable remake)))

    • Ramis

      I had a Nikon d800 and top-end optics.
I sold the carcass. I want to take a light camera like this. The question is: is there a big difference in quality, given that the d3500 is eight years younger than the d800?

      • Arkady Shapoval

Approximately 2 times for most parameters

      • Victor

Strong. I think the result will not please you unpleasantly.

  • BB

Reduced the number of buttons, moved the flash button and removed fn on the left.
Did you enlarge the display and because of this there is 'no room' for the buttons to the left of the display, or did you reduce the carcass by 3mm?
For some reason, the main control dial was 'raised to the surface' (to visually increase the number of controls?), While making a small notch on it and on the mode dial, instead of a large one - it is less convenient and looks more like a soap dish.
I feel that for the D3900 there will be one shutter button, one mode button (auto with flash, auto without flash) and a touch screen to select the focus point.
In short, ergonomics have been further degraded, but they drew the bluetooth icon so that they can immediately take off the pictures on smart, and post to the instagram :(

    • Arkady Shapoval

The displays are completely the same.

    • Wade

A significant group of users of the D3XXX series have been shooting in the green zone all their lives, more importantly, the “prestige soap” mode and the novelty of the camera. In this vein, the senior figure in the model designation, wireless interface, touch screen are of great importance))) For the rest of Nikon adherents, a long line of cameras of various classes and capabilities is at their disposal.

      • Arkady Shapoval

So far, the entire Dxxx line goes without a touch screen, including the new D3500

        • Wade

Arkady, thanks for the clarification, this function is actively discussed in the Nikon Russia VK group, and no one (including me) bothered to check ...

          • Arkady Shapoval

The first camera with a touch screen was the Nikon D5500, later it migrated to the D5600, but has not yet reached the initial line.
            From the Nikon D3500, by the way, they expected 4K and a 39-point focusing system (like the D5200-D5300-D5500-D5600 / D7000 / D600 / D610), but not fate.

            • Georgy

39 points will be when there will be 51 in the fifth series. That is, when there will be 7 in the 153th series. Perhaps in the next generation. Although, given that 3xxx is done more often than others, I do not deny the possibility of another intermediate model with new filters for Instagram.

In general, by the way, I think they removed the aperture limiter correctly in the 3400 model. Well, simply because 999 out of 1000 users of this camera will never install D optics on this device. The lack of autofocus frightened them before, so now no one will notice it. And nobody will worry about the impossibility of installing 28-70 or 80-200 or 400 / 2,8. Those who need this particular optics know what they want and by chance they won't buy 3500. Therefore, they quite rightly simplified the design of the chamber.

The worst thing about the 3500 is the lack of a programmable fn button. Everything else is just a redesign of the case.

              • Georgy

Although, watching people shoot the moon or a landscape from a mountain in the evening with a flash, I understand that this button is probably needed by 1% of 3xxx buyers ...

            • Valentine

11 points, by the way, do not bother more advanced users (these are not at all pathetic 3 points, like on the D40 and D60, although you can generally live normally with them), but newcomers very often as the main argument when buying more An expensive 5xxx series camera puts forward more focus points. Having made 39 points, it was possible both to attract additional buyers to this camera and to pull some of them away from the more expensive 5600. We did not get involved in such experiments yet.

              • Novel

God, who needs these focus points? I always focus on the center with holding the shutter release and recomposing the frame. even when shooting a landscape with a tripod, the focus is almost always at infinity. the only use for these points is macro from a tripod, and even then the focus is almost always the center.
in fact, if, then this camera is wretched. overdressed soap dish with interchangeable lenses. and that is limited.

  • anonym

And what is the difference from the D3400, except for Type C :)

    • Arkady Shapoval

I indicated the differences at the end of the announcement. In addition, the D3400 and D3500 have the same HDMI Type C

  • Nikita

In short, for the current day, d3300 is the most advanced of the 3 series ...)

    • Arkady Shapoval

Like that. I put the D3300 higher than the D3400 and D3500 in my note about amateur camera choice.

      • Georgy

For myself, I agree, even. But, objectively speaking, 3500 by 45 gr. lighter than 3300. That's 11%. Plus, it has what is very much needed in our time - the presence of wireless interfaces, which will be much more important for many than the ability to put AF-D lenses with exposure metering ...

        • Arkady Shapoval

There is still a lack of sensor cleaning and flash power and more.

          • Georgy

My 7000 has it. But I consistently remove dust in lightroom in many pictures. I don't know, it is very difficult for me to evaluate the effectiveness of this system in practice. In the top, yes. Every little thing is important. But here. On a camera with which the whale is filmed a little less often than never, this also makes sense.

I am not saying this is good. I'm just trying to look at things from different angles. Including by Nikon.

The only thing. In this situation, Nikon should invest in the development of software automation. If people are shooting in the green zone, give them a breakthrough in this direction and present beautifully through marketing. Teach the camera to understand what it is filming so that you do not fire a flash at the moon. For the camera to see. what if in the dark the autofocus illumination reflects off the glass of the bus (for example) - you don't need to turn on the flash, it will also be reflected and the photo will just be a white spot. It can be done! This does not require ironing - only the metering sensor.

The problem with 3500 is that there is nothing to sell. There is no new feature except the fact of novelty.

  • Valentine

The Fn button is a pity most of all of the above. If other methods for choosing ISO are not provided, then it turns out either auto-ISO, or pick through the on-screen menu. They reduce the 3-thousandth series slowly to automation. That is, you, of course, can control the whole shooting, but it will be so inconvenient for you to do that it is better you look at more advanced models right away.

  • anonym

Using the I button, you can change the ISO.

    • Valentine

You mean through the "i" button? That is, you need to enter the quick menu on the screen, find the ISO item, select the ISO value and press OK. The Fn + dial button let you change ISO without taking your eyes off the camera without any extra effort.

  • Dmitriy

"The D3500 takes 350 more shots on one battery charge than the D3400 (1200 shots versus 1550 shots)"
The difference is even greater than the z6 / z7 can remove on a single battery. Lol

    • Arkady Shapoval

The network already has information that the Z6 / Z7 on a single charge takes over 1000 shots. Measurements are made according to the CIPA standard, and they reflect the whole picture only partially.

  • Yura

Now the technology is done by marketers, not engineers.

    • Valentine

In the USSR, it was engineers, in the West, for a long time, marketers. Some things made exclusively by engineers cannot be looked at without tears. The marketer is obliged to sell what the engineers ordered. He can sell either when he understands what the buyer wants, or when he convinced the buyer to buy what he ordered by the engineers. In any case, the choice is yours. Didn't like it, see other models. Today the choice is huge.

  • Valentine

Have you saved the infrared port for remote control or not? In the pictures is not visible.

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Removed.

      • Nikita

        Specially climbed on nikonstore

If you select the Ml l3 remote control, then in the list of “related products there is d3500. It seems like they left. Otherwise, absolutely disgusting.
In general, it seems to me that it would make sense to put a price of 250-300 bucks per body on such a trim to at least hook the user on nikon f lenses :)

        https://www.nikon.ru/ru_RU/product/accessories/slr/slr-connectivity/remote-control/infrared-remote-control-ml-l3?ID=367#related-products

        • Georgy

Most buyers will not buy other glasses for it. Well, maybe the 70-300DX “big zoom”. Double whale.

You just don't have to look at this camera as a tool of great possibilities. For such people, Nikon has a fairly wide range of cameras. This is the sweetest camera in the entire lineup and it is closer to Point & Shoot cameras in terms of ideology than to system SLR cameras, which are usually given a plus “a wide selection of different optics for different tasks”

I think that all claims to these devices are caused by historical memory, when the Central Commissioners were the lot of the elite, were expensive and in general not everyone needed. I remember when D50 around the neck with a whale or with a fifty dollar. 1.4 equated the owner with a professional reporter in the eyes of others. 2007 year. Now the CZK niche is much wider. 3500-14 year old Instagrammers are running around with DSLRs like D16. And, probably, it is completely superfluous to think that they are interested in buying a park of optics for their D3xxx ...

Look at the CZK with their eyes and everything will become clear.

          • Georgy

            * This is the youngest camera in the lineup
            Typo T9

          • Michael

The claims are connected not with historical memory, but with the desire of serious photographers to have a cheap spare camera with full compatibility with the "older" sister.

            • Georgy

“Cheap” is a very relative term. The 7500 is also a cheap alternative to the D5.

              • Michael

No, it’s quite concrete. The cheaper the spare camera, the better

            • ptv

“Serious photographers” – who are these people? Businessmen who sell their photos to ordinary people and prove to them that since I see it this way, then this is the ideal, because look at my portfolio and what a huge FF camera?
Photographers who are engaged in artistic photography, not for commercial purposes, who photograph street, nature, sports, animals and birds, those who do not organize photo sessions, do not take portraits to order, but at the same time know how to take shots of interesting composition even for a slipper - after all, this is “ frivolous,” right?

          • Valentine

No, circumcision claims have nothing to do with historical memory. They are associated, for example, with the fact that simple models of system crops from a number of other manufacturers remain more or less functional. It's one thing to make a camera cheaper because of the materials, lack of additional equipment, use of components of the previous generation - everything is clear here: the camera is simpler, the price is lower. It's another matter when all of this is still cut or locked functions, but the price remains quite high. Will finish the game someday this way.

            • Arkady Shapoval

This is everywhere. The same update 650d to 700d has much less differences than d3400 to d3500

              • Valentine

But neither in the Canon EOS 1300D, nor in the simplest Canon EOS 4000D, they thought of removing the ISO button. Olympus Pen E-PL9 also did not experience such degradation, and somehow normally measures exposure with any manual lens, and retained the Fn button. In general, I am not against the policy of reducing the cost of cameras, but selling cameras cut off in basic things is not the case.

              • Arkady Shapoval

                Yes, that’s understandable.

          • anonym

Does Nikon have a lot of glass? In addition to 35 mm on the DX, in fact, there is nothing.

            • Michael

              10.5, 17-55, 12-24

              • anonym

                10.5 - screwdriver, 17-55 discontinued.

              • Michael

17-55 on the official website in the list of relevant. A screwdriver does not change the accessory of the lens.

              • Arkady Shapoval

                the same goes for 10.5

              • anonym

The line of lenses you specify is more likely for the d500 than for the d3500.

              • Michael

Yes, these are quite serious lenses. It’s easier plastic in bulk

        • Arkady Shapoval

Yesterday on nikon.ru in the technical specifications it was indicated that the d3500 has a touch screen. After many years of doing reviews, I learned one simple rule - local sites can lie a lot. But the remote control does not support :)

          • Michael

A 10.5 out of production? Why is he then in the product catalog?

            • Arkady Shapoval

how could they have removed it from production if it hadn’t been replaced?

              • Michael

Then I missed that “the same goes for 10.5”?

  • Vitaly N

It's time to call the D2500. And who got it into his head to mix all the buttons? If at 3200 I accidentally press the selector with my thumb and switch the focus point, but this is noticeable in the viewfinder and quickly corrected, now there is “i”. Probably to correct the consequences of accidental clicks longer. It's strange why the mount is not plastic. Probably will be in the next upgraded D3600.

    • Valentine

I can understand everything, even a plastic mount, when the camera is made really inexpensive, massive and affordable, as they say, for anyone. But the price tag for this thing is not very weak. On the official foreign website, it costs $ 500 in a whale version. Well, excuse me, I’m a used one with a range of up to 50-60% of the shutter resource, I’d better buy a more advanced crop, you can find the full frame at a price like D600 / D700. And crop so generally with good optics in the kit to take. How would you understand the simplification of the camera when they reduce costs and price. But at this price, giving more and more truncated functions means making customers think again about the alternatives to their products.

  • Aries

in order to take a high-quality picture you need 1-RAW 2- a good lens ... production workers fool amateurs with marketers ... buttons are changed .. in the next model version they will attach a whistle ... a wine opener ... and so on ...

    • Nikonists are a sect

In order to make a good picture, just a handy photographer was pressed.
I watched DRTV, a series where photographers were forced to shoot for rubbish, so one was given a Kitty zoom camera, 0.3MP. I had to shoot skaters in motion.
      And the pictures he succeeded.

  • Nikonists are a sect

The camera is weaker than the competitors of this price niche; it is better not to compare it with the Sony A68 and Canon 750D.
All marketing hope for the Nikon brand.

    • Georgy

With 750D you need to compare D5xxx

  • Dmitry.Sh

and raw is now 12 bits and compressed ... ..class !! well, although for such a level it can pull

    • Arkady Shapoval

Compressed RAW with a 12-bit color depth without the ability to select the compression level and / or color depth is available for all cameras in this series and has always been this way since the first D70 / D70s / D50 / D40.
14-bit RAW appeared in the amateur segment only with the arrival of the Nikon D5100, in the advanced segment - in the D7000, in the upper segment - in the Nikon D300, in the TOP segment - in the Nikon D3 (D3 / D300 were generally the first in this regard, presented on 23.08.2007. 6, at the same time as Z7 / ZXNUMX)

      • Dima

For cats and flowers will ride.

  • Sergei

Why did they leave the shoe? They need to do the BZK with the F mount. The younger segment will go with a bang. And then you look at the picture in optics alone, and as a result, for example, an incorrect exposure and everything is lit. For fans there is no buzzing, it’s easier for them to take pictures on the phone

  • Onotole

This can be a child 10-12 years old for a birthday to buy. Like such a modern Smena-8M: something sensible to take off, you’ll get used to it, but you can study photography.

  • Charles

Young mothers often buy such cameras. In our area, at least.

  •  gluten free diet

    Z6: carcass ~ $ 2000, whale kit ~ $ 2500, Z7: carcass ~ $ 3500, whale kit ~ $ 4000 /

  • Alexey de Paris

thanks for the informative review. We cut down the camera ... I won't buy one for myself and won't recommend it to a friend. D3300 or 3200 will come out cheaper with obvious advantages! something like this…

    • Nikonists are a sect

Or maybe it's better to take a bzk for the same money?
The future belongs to them ...

      • Alexey de Paris

For me, the good old SLR is a hundred times more convenient than mirrorless. By the way, a few years ago, choosing a DSLR, I chose between d3200 and D90. I'm glad I chose the D90. Convenience control super convenient camera

      • Peter Sh

That's when this mirrorless future comes, then we will run to the store, losing slippers.
And now we have a mirror present.

        • Charles

DSLRs will not die. The lineup of companies will decrease, but I’m sure the SLRs will stay with us for a long time.

          • Peter Sh

I think so too. Anything different can always be crammed onto the second SLR matrix, without sacrificing image quality, and for a little money. Relatively, of course.
Those. All the super-tech super-sensors for the latest development of the BZK can be put on the DSLR. But already fatter, more reliable and cheaper.

          • anonym

All this can be true until the UPC are cheaper than DSLRs. :)

            • anonym

              They will not.

            • Arkady Shapoval

Any sony nex with aps-c 1.5x, for example, the 3 Sony NEX-2010, is not much more expensive or at the level of SLR cameras of that time, but they did not recover much popularity. There are a lot of factors.

  • anonym

Used DSLR can be bought for a penny. A used bzk is almost like new even 100 years ago. In the mirror, both human autofocus and an inexpensive flash can be selected. And the new unpretentious olympus and fujifilm are at the level of advanced DSLRs.

    • Alexey de Paris

And DSLRs and mirrorless cameras on the secondary are full, believe me. The most important factor here is how old the model is + the level of the camera and the condition. However, it is the mirrorless cameras that often sell for 20 percent of the new model's price. Many people perceive them as something frivolous precisely because of their compact size. Of course, the old mirrorless plus in front of the old DSLR is a video recording. All old video DSLRs either do not write or write poorly (for example, Nikon D90), there is already someone who needs more. If you want a good video recorder for an inexpensive one, I strongly advise you to look at Samsung mirrorless cameras. Simply excellent value for money (Samsung nx1000).

      • Dmitriy

For a year now I have been selling for 10 tyr, not a single offer!)))

        • Valentine

There is little optics for them, and the prices for optics are high. And whoever understands, most likely, will not want to take a system camera with a simple whale.

      • Michael

For video, it makes sense to buy a video recorder, not a camera

        • Alexey de Paris

Yes you ! Can I be more specific? models and approximate prices pliz. Only so that it was significantly better than the same NX1000 for reasonable money.

  • anonym

Cool. They removed fnl, cut off the remote control. The buttons were swapped. Cardinally - zero, or even minus. This is what I understand improvement.

  • Victor

Interestingly, they even removed the matrix cleaning! My colleague says, "Does anyone else buy cameras now?" After all, now, phones are removed, almost like DSLRs.

    • Peter Sh.

To whom the mare is the bride, forgive me.

    • Dima

The phone will not even give half the quality ... bullshit, these are all cameras in smartphones

    • Onotole

The key word is almost. Matiz takes to work almost like a Mercedes, the end result is the same - you are at work (more or less likely, but still). But the differences in the process (and we don’t forget the probability of success) are precisely the difference in price between Mercedes and Matiz, between D850 and S8. Well, if I shoot phones just like DSLRs, I still can't see a single wedding photographer with a smartphone.
Tell us honestly, you, or your colleague (if he’s not imaginary :)), would you like to see a photographer at your wedding for half the price, but with a smartphone instead of a 7-10 kilogram backpack with cameras and lenses?

      • Victor

As for wedding photography, everything is clear here that seeing a photographer with a massive lens and a DSLR camera is certainly better, here I agree with you.
My colleague, well, as a colleague, we work in one organization only in different positions, he is a graphic designer, he wanted to buy a Nikon D90, but so far he is thinking.
It's just that I have a Nikon D40 myself, and a Blackview BV6000 smartphone. Here are photos for comparison - they are without any processing:

        IMG-20181008 114223-

        DSC-0079

        • anonym

I think even such a quality is inaccessible to the UFK-2 camera.

          • Valery A.

Why didn't you take the same photos, with the same cropping, if you started comparing? The first one is porridge in the trees.

  • Andrei

Anyone else, but I use younger models professionally, I have to carry a full frame to all sorts of corporate parties and children's holidays - there is no desire to kill, but I hung these two, from 17-50 and 55 - 300 and report without any problems at all. And the shoulders are not delayed (carrying two dimes with flashes for 5-6 hours is hello to the masseur). But one shot - beats off one carcass. 3500 is, as it were, everything, sunset 3XXX, cheap workhorses. To remove the FN button, it was necessary to think of it. If anyone here will explain the focus on younger carcasses - everything works well for me, I have enough. The D300 is idle, compared to the 3300, the focus is a little more tenacious, but not faster.

  • Sergei

What is the buffer for this model for JPEG format? How is the 3200?

Strange, but my d3500 does not want to work with AF-D lenses using a screwdriver, does not show the aperture value and says that the lens is not supported.
    Tried connecting Tokina 28-70 ATx-pro f2.8
Nikon AF 50mm 1.8D, none of them worked

It is correct to say that the D3500 does not support operation with NON-G, NON-E lenses (which have an aperture control ring). The same applies to the d3400, the EE lever was cut out in them.
