On Radozhiv already have my review YONGNUO LENS 100mm 1: 2 (YN100mm F2) for Canon EOS cameras, but due to some significant differences, I decided to make a separate review on the Yongnuo 100/2 version for Nikon cameras.

YONGNUO LENS 100mm 1: 2 YN100mm F2N for Nikon

YONGNUO LENS 100mm 1: 2 YN100mm F2N for Nikon

In short

Yongnuo 100/2 - copy of the original full-frame lens Canon Lens EF 100mm 1: 2 Ultrasonicreleased by Yongnuo Digital for Nikon cameras.

The Yongnuo 100/2, as indicated on the box and corresponding to reality, acts as a fast aperture telephoto lens with a fixed focal length.

Yongnuo 100/2 attracts with its low cost and features similar to the original Canon Lens EF 100mm 1: 2 Ultrasonic. Nikon does not have a complete analogue for the Yongnuo 100/2, but an old man who looks like him Nikon AF DC-Nikkor 105mm 1: 2 D Defocus Image Control still very different from Yongnuo 100/2. The closest in functionality to the Yongnuo 100/2 is the original Nikon AF-S Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.8G IF SWMI will often compare Yongnuo 100/2 with in this review.

Generally Yongnuo 100/2 relatively good and is a very attractive lens for amateur photographers as an inexpensive creative lens, primarily intended for portraiture.

Spoiler: Yongnuo 100/2 for Nikon cameras turned out much better than its predecessor YONGNUO LENS 100mm 1: 2 (YN100mm F2) for Canon cameras. It does not have serious problems with focusing and is optically noticeably better. Maybe in a review YONGNUO LENS 100mm 1: 2 (YN100mm F2) for Canon cameras I have not been the best copy. Also, the version for Nikon received a USB port for updating the firmware, it became heavier, with a longer stroke of the focus ring and a slightly modified body design (no corrugation at the bottom of the lens) and a couple more minor changes appeared.

History

Yongnuo 100/2 for Canon EOS cameras first appeared on the official website on October 31, 2016. One year later, August 1 2017 the Yongnuo 100mm 1: 2 lens (YN100mm F2N model, as in this review) for Nikon cameras appeared on the site and at the end of September 2017 was already on sale. In fact, the version for Nikon cameras is much newer than the version for Canon.

The Yongnuo 100/2 is the first lens of the company, which has almost the same body design for the versions for Nikon and Canon (in fact, there are several serious differences).

Let me remind you that the first lens from Yongnuo Digital was a fifty dollars for Canon EOS cameras - Yongnuo Lens EF 50mm 1: 1.8 (YN50mm F1.8) submitted on December 27, 2014. And the first Yongnuo Digital lens for Nikon cameras was YONGNUO 50mm 1: 1.8 (YN50mm F1.8N, prototype shown July 10, 2015).

YONGNUO LENS 100mm 1: 2 YN100mm F2N for Nikon

Assembly

The lens came to the review completely new.

In a small box is a warranty card, instructions in Chinese and English, a desiccant and the lens itself with a front (YN-58) and a back cover. The box is made in the colors typical of the golden boxes of Nikon Nikkor lenses. The front and rear lenses of the lens are initially covered by special transport films.

In general, the lens is assembled well. Yongnuo 100/2 has metal mount mount. The focus ring is rubberized. Front of the lens housing (from the focus ring to the front lens) made of metal. Metal thread for the filter (suddenly!). The back of the lens (from the focus ring to the bayonet mount) is made of plastic. It is stated that the contacts of the microcircuits are gold plated to improve the passage of current. The weight of the Yongnuo 100/2 is approximately 450 grams (the same Nikon 85 / 1.8G weighs 100 grams less).

Of the serious flaws in the assembly, I want to highlight the tangible backlash of the focus ring, as well as metal knock associated with this backlash (when you touch the ring, you can hear metal gently hitting metal, tapping). If not for this backlash, then by touch distinguish Yongnuo 100/2 from Canon EF 100 / 2 USM it would be very difficult.

Diaphragm consists of 9 petals and form a hole in the shape of an irregular hexagon, while in the photos in the blur zone rather round discs of blur appear in the range F / 2-F / 8.

The lens has a USB port in the lower rear of the lens (in the bayonet area).

Unfortunately, the bundle does not include a hood, a bag for transportation, a USB cable and a software disk (software can only be downloaded from the official website).

YONGNUO LENS 100mm 1: 2 YN100mm F2N for Nikon

Focusing

The lens has built-in focus motor DC-type (DDirectly Current Motor- ordinary DC motor). To be precise, the Yongnuo 100/2 is an analog of the Nikon series lenses AF-I. Unlike lenses Nikon AF-Sthat use ultrasonic focusing motors Nikon SWMold lenses Nikon AF-I use a built-in buzzing micro focus motor similar to the Yongnuo DC.

The lens will automatically focus on all Nikon DSLR cameraseven on amateur series models Nikon DXthat do not have a built-in focus motor: D40, D40x, D60, D3000, D3100, D3200, D3300, D3400, D3500, D5000, D5100, D5200, D5300, D5500, D5600as well as mirrorless cameras Nikon Z with adapter FTZ / FTZ II.

When focusing, the motor is noisy. The noise is small. Yongnuo 100/2 makes less noise than motorless Nikon AF DC-Nikkor 105mm 1: 2 D Defocus Image Control. At the same time, the Yongnuo 100/2 is not much more noisy than compact ultrasonic motor у Nikon 85 / 1.8G.

Auto Focus Speed average. Focusing speed is enough for comfortable work in most photo tasks. Autofocus speed similar to lens Nikon 85 / 1.8G.

When used on cameras Nikon D90, D5000, D5100 (with unpretentious Multi-CAM 1000 focusing system), Nikon D40 (with the simplest Multi-CAM 530 focusing system) and with Nikon D700 (with advanced Multi-CAM 3500FX Focusing System) I did not have any particular problems. The quality of work varies slightly from camera to camera. But I must note that the tenacity of focus is low and much worse than that of the original lenses.

On camera Nikon D90 I checked the presence of the back and focus front at different focusing distances (infinity and MDF as well). Pictures taken using the Live View mode (which does not suffer from back / front focus) were used as a measure. Focusing accuracy using phase sensors completely coincided with the Live View mode.

The focus ring is rubberized and in manual focus mode rotates approximately 120 degrees. When extreme positions are reached, the ring does not abut, but continues to rotate. The focus distance scale rotates in the opposite direction of the focus ring rotation. Manual focus is quite convenient. Focus ring can easy to rotate with one finger. During manual focusing, one can hear 'plastic rubbing against plastic or metal', while the ring rotates smoothly and is quite pleasant.

There is an 'AF-MF' (auto focus / manual focus) focus mode switch on the lens barrel. Switch positions are reversed compared to original lenses ('AF-MF' <-> 'M-M / A'). During auto focus focus ring remains stationarywhile it can be freely rotated 360 degrees without any effect on focusing. Unfortunately, unlike many original Nikon lenses, the Yongnuo 100/2 does not support continuous manual focus control Nikon M / A (or similar).

Lens has internal focus, the front and rear lenses remain stationary during focusing. It is possible to use various filters without any problems. I easily used a Yongnuo 100 / 2 with a polarizing filter HOYA 58mm PL-CIR.

The lens has a window with a focus distance scale in meters and feet. The number of values on the scale is small, the scale itself is not very useful.

The minimum focusing distance is 90 cm and the maximum magnification ratio is 1: 7.2 (0.14 X magnification, slightly better than Nikon AF-S Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.8G IF SWM).

Focus Features:

  1. Important: the quality of the focus of the Yongnuo 100/2 in Live View is highly dependent on the firmware and the camera used. It is authentically known that Yongnuo 100/2 with firmware 1.05 does not have special focus problems in Live View with Nikon D90, but still focuses very slowly (more of a problem is the focus method in contrast). And here, as an example, on the camera Nikon D600 и Nikon D700 the Yongnuo 100/2 lens with firmware 1.01 has obvious problems in Live View.
  2. Yongnuo 100 / 2 has a very pronounced 'Focus Breathing' effect (changing the viewing angle during focusing). During focusing towards the MDF, the viewing angle decreases (usually with internal focusing lenses, the angle increases).
  3. Focus Shift (focus shift, changing focus distance due to iris)
  4. Yongnuo 100 / 2 does not have a hard stop (hard infinity mechanical stop) which allows you to accurately and quickly focus the lens to infinity under any external temperature conditions. For accurate aiming at infinity, you cannot just bring the focus ring to its extreme position.
  5. The lens transmits the distance to the subject in the camera and is Nikon D-lens equivalent... How exactly this function works is unknown, but I noticed the following distances: 6, 2.1, 0.94, 1.2 meters. Most likely, there shouldn't be any special problems with the flash, but it was not possible to check the lens in detail. Nikon flash for simple situations SB-910 in i-TTL modes with this lens worked correctly.
  6. With the lid closed, the automatic focusing of the lens does not run the lens over the full focusing distance, as the vast majority of Nikon Nikkor lenses do. With the lid closed, the lens runs from two meters to infinity and back, or from MDF to 1.2 meters and back. If you remove the cover, the lens focuses using the entire available range of focusing distances. Inexplicable but the fact.
  7. Important: Yongnuo 100 / 2 is a third-party lens. It may happen that it will not work correctly with some cameras. Details on this issue are considered by me. here... It is not known whether the possibility of updating the firmware will help. As an example - on camera Nikon D40 the lens sometimes freezes / falls asleep for 2-3 seconds, after which it begins to focus again without obvious problems.
  8. Some users report problems with focusing during use. external flash with some cameras. No exact data.
  9. Unknown compatibility with teleconverters.
  10. Unknown compatibility with FT-1 adapter for system cameras Nikon 1.
YONGNUO LENS 100mm 1: 2 YN100mm F2N for Nikon

YONGNUO LENS 100mm 1: 2 YN100mm F2N for Nikon

Exposure Issues

Important: some cameras have a problem with automatic metering exposure. On camera Nikon D90 with any metering settings exposure the built-in exposure meter lies about -2 steps (i.e., you need to make a correction exposure +2 EV). I already saw a similar problem with the lens Yongnuo 40 / 2.8.

Perhaps, on some cameras, this problem is only available during focusing using a single focus point. No exact data.

Important: Yongnuo 100/2 firmware update eliminated metering problems exposure in the chamber Nikon D90... This error is indicated in the firmware as “Fix automatic exposure anomalies”.

YONGNUO LENS 100mm 1: 2 YN100mm F2N for Nikon

Firmware Upgrade

There is a USB port on the lens housing of the Yongnuo 100/2 with which you can update the lens software (firmware / firmware). This function first appeared just at Yongnuo 100mm 1: 2 and Yongnuo 40 / 2.8that were presented at the same time. Unlike Yongnuo 40 / 2.8The Yongnuo 100/2 USB port is in an inconspicuous place.

Unfortunately, the functionality of the YNLensTool Updater Version 1.00 program, which is responsible for working with the lens, is very meager. You can only see the current firmware version and update it to a new one. Firmware versions can be found on the official website. I found firmware for my Yongnuo 100/2 here.

A widespread USB 2.0 MICRO-B port is used to connect to the lens (most mobile phones use just that). A USB cable is not included. To connect, I used the USB cable for my Android phone and without any problems updated the firmware from V1.03 (2017.12.20) to V1.05 (2018.01.17). The procedure took less than 10 seconds.

A firmware update, most likely, allows you to improve the compatibility of the lens with new cameras, improve the autofocus, eliminates some other errors. It is very bad that there is no way to roll back (restore) an older version of the firmware.

To upgrade the firmware (software) of the lens:

  • Turn off the camera, detach the lens
  • Open YNLens Updater to Update
  • Attach the lens to the computer using a USB cable. If everything went well, the program will automatically detect the connected lens
  • Click [Browse] and select the file with the desired firmware
  • Click [Start] to start the update. Wait for the update to complete.
  • Disconnect the cable and enjoy.

YONGNUO LENS 100mm 1: 2 YN100mm F2N for Nikon

Image quality

With the image quality, the Yongnuo 100/2 is not bad, or even normal / good.

Sharpness

  • in the center of the frame on F / 2.0 the resolution does not shine, but still it is enough for many photo tasks
  • there is a noticeable drop in sharpness to the edges of the frame at f / 2.0
  • at the edges of the frame, sharpness becomes acceptable after f / 4.0
  • good / excellent resolution in the center of the frame on covered apertures after F / 2.8

Distortion

  • the overall level of distortion is at a level typical for such lenses
  • the nature of distortion is unified, easily corrected in the editor

Vignetting

Aberration

  • open diaphragms have a noticeable amount of spherical and chromatic aberrations
  • the strongest chromatic aberration visible at the edges and corners of the image
  • general level HA is at the level typical for such lenses
  • there is strong friging (HA in the blur zone) and blooming (HA on very contrasting small details)

Rest

  • it's important: On covered apertures in the center of the frame, a whitish veil may appear in slightly contrasting subjects. This property has many old lenses, especially macro-weaving.
  • color rendering is neutral, pleasant. The lens uses front lens enlightenment, which casts green shades. Many modern lenses have enlightenment that shimmers like the Yongnuo 100/2.
  • in some situations, the lens is very afraid of side and back light. May be tangible drop in contrast in side light. Most likely, this behavior is due to the fact that the front lens is located immediately behind the filter, and the use of the lens welcomes the installation of a lens hood.
  • in many scenes, the lens can create a pleasant / neutral / cream bokeh

Video review

A brief video review can be viewed on my Youtube channeleither here:

My experience

In my opinion, the YONGNUO 100/2 is the best cheap 'true' portrait lens. 'Real' in terms of focal length, aperture ratio and picture. Such a powerful Holy Grail for the amateur photographer. The professional will pass by YONGNUO 100/2, but the amateur photographer can get a lot of positive from the picture from 100/2.

Somehow it turns out at Yongnuo that the lens versions for Nikon and Canon are significantly different. Typically, versions for Nikon are more functional with better builds.

On Nikon DX cameras EGF lens YONGNUO LENS 100mm 1:2 YN100mm F2N will fit 150mm due to crop factor. On the crop, this is something in between 135/2 and 180/2.8, such EGF convenient enough for portrait shooting in open locations.

Personally, I liked the Yongnuo 100/2, minor flaws in it practically do not bother me. It is not easy to get a high-aperture `` weaving '' with F / 2.8 (like Nikon Lens Series E 100mm 1: 2.8) or F / 2.5 (like Nikon 105mm 1: 2.5 Nikkor), and with F / 2.0, and even for $ 170 and completely new, it's very cool. As a result, I shot about 100 frames on Yongnuo 2/10.000.

New Yongnuo 100 / 2 costs less than the cheapest portrait original lens Nikon 85mm 1: 1.8 AF Nikkor in a condition B. at.

  1. Information on choosing a portrait lens can be found in the 'Portrait Fixed Lenses for Nikon Cameras'
  2. A list of cheap portrait lenses for Nikon can be found under 'Budget portraits under Nikon DSLRs'
  3. How to achieve maximum background blur with Yongnuo 100/2 is described in the 'Blurred background'

I repeat once again - an autofocus 'weave' with F / 2.0 is much more convenient to use than the vast majority of manual similar lenses, and the number of successful shots from it is several times higher than any manual lens of this type, including common premium class lenses 85/1.4 or 135/2.8.

Results

Nikon has no full counterpart to the Yongnuo 100/2 (at least at the time of this writing). Original Nikon AF DC-Nikkor 105mm 1: 2 D Defocus Image Control is a completely different lens and I don’t even want to compare them (in the case of Yongnuo 100/2 for Canon EOS in the review there was a comparison with the original similar Canon Lens EF 100mm 1: 2 Ultrasonic).

Yongnuo 100/2 for Nikon cameras turned out significantly better than for Canon EOS cameras. Perhaps the option for Canon in the review turned out to be not the most revealing in terms of capabilities, but perhaps it is elementary that the version Yongnuo 100/2 for Nikon new year and it removed some of the flaws inherent in the previous version.

Yongnuo 100/2 is generally a very interesting alternative to the original Nikon AF-S Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.8G IF SWM, especially for Nikon non-motorized camera users. In fact, with Yongnuo 100/2 you can get 80-90% of the functionality from Canon Lens EF 100mm 1: 2 Ultrasonic / Nikon AF-S Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.8G IF SWM.

Despite the primary problems with exposure, the strong focus ring play and rumors of instability of quality from lens to lens, the Yongnuo 100/2 for Nikon cameras is a very attractive lens.

Advantages

  1. low cost (170 dollars for the new Yongnuo 100/2 against 480 dollars for Nikon 85 / 1.8G or 1200 dollars for DC-Nikkor 105 / 2D)
  2. internal focusing (front and rear lenses always remain stationary)
  3. built-in focus motor (important for owners Nikon DX cameras without focus motor)
  4. quite convenient manual focus
  5. presence of a window with a scale of focusing distances and the depth of field scale
  6. good build quality: metal bayonet mount, metal front of the lens housing with metal thread for filters, rubberized focus ring, hood (theoretically) bayonet type
  7. compact size (length and thickness of Yongnuo 100/2 comparable to a whale lens Nikon 18-55 / 3.5-5.6G VR)
  8. nine-petal diaphragmsufficiently round discs of blur in the range of F / 2-F / 8
  9. no focus shift
  10. fixed focus ring during auto focus (e.g. Nikon 85 / 1.8D the ring rotates and cannot be touched)
  11. Confident sharpness starting at f / 2.2 in the center of the frame. A moderate level of basic optical distortion (aberration, vignetting, distortion), comparable to the original Canon Lens EF 100mm 1: 2 Ultrasonic
  12. nice / neutral drawing, which can be used as a good artistic technique during portraiture
  13. relatively small diameter of filters (58 mm versus 67 mm for Nikon 85 / 1.8G or 72 mm DC-Nikkor 105 / 2D)
  14. There is no full or partial analogue among the original Nikon Nikkor lenses. Good combination of focal length and aperture
  15. USB port for updating the lens firmware

Disadvantages

  1. limited options for adjusting the lens via the USB port. You can only upgrade the lens firmware. Cannot roll back firmware to previous version
  2. backlash of the focus ring and the knock of the focus ring when it is touched (it seems that the ring is loose)
  3. average focusing speed (but still comfortable for most tasks)
  4. uncertain focus (weak 'focus tenacity')
  5. lack of the function of constant manual focus control similar to, for example, M / A mode у Nikon 85 / 1.8G
  6. possible problems while working with the flash in some TTL modes due to the specifics of transmitting the focusing distance to the camera (a large sample of data is needed for verification)
  7. focus ring and distance scale have different directions of rotation (psychological discomfort)
  8. slight noise from the focus motor
  9. metering problems exposure on some cameras (e.g. Nikon D90 amendment required exposure + 2 EV or lens flashing)
  10. focus problems in live view on some cameras
  11. no hood included, unknown hood type, unknown compatibility with original hoods
  12. lack of basic dust and moisture protection (in Nikon 85 / 1.8G, for example, there is rubber lens mount seal)
  13. tangible effect of 'Focus Breathing' (changes in viewing angle during focusing)
  14. poor instruction (jambs indicating the minimum aperture, lack of information about the type of hood, etc.)
  15. there is no tag for working in the infrared spectrum, the depth of field and focusing distances are small
  16. there may be incompatibility with some cameras and / or teleconverters (no exact data)
  17. lack of data about the lens in modern cameras, which makes it difficult to automatically correct some types of optical distortion (distortion, vignetting etc.)
  18. lack of lens profile in popular RAW converters (perhaps this is only a temporary drawback)
  19. the survivability of this lens and the variation in quality are unknown. Little information on Yongnuo Certified Lens Service Centers
  20. certain imperfections in the image (poor sharpness at F / 2.0 at the corners and edges of the image, poor resistance to lateral light, a set of optical distortions characteristic of lenses of this kind). Particularly noteworthy is the whitish veil in the center of the frame on little contrasting scenes and covered apertures

Comments: 262, on the topic: Review YONGNUO LENS 100mm 1: 2 (YN100mm F2N, for Nikon)

  • Onotole

The color of the D90 photo examples is of course complete shit. And the color with D40, although not very accurate, is subjectively very pleasant. It is clear, first of all, about the notorious skin tone. Well, here everything is just CCD - rules, and CMOS, especially Nikon, especially the old one - of course sucks.
Here, everyone commenting is in full consensus.

However, I was curious, is it possible to “finish” a skin tone from D90 to D40? And if so, how much will it take?

The opportunity presented itself to be as successful as possible. The same model, the same photographer, the same lens and approximately the same surroundings and lighting conditions. And even the fact that the model is not a professional plays into our hands: all the poses are very similar to each other, it will not be difficult to choose almost the same.

The subject will be this frame taken on the D90 - https://radojuva.com/wp-content/uploads/sg/yn100d90/yongnuo-100mm-f-2n-d90-lens-samples-24.jpg
As a measure, a reference - this one shot on the D40 https://radojuva.com/wp-content/uploads/sg/yn100-f2-d40/yongnuo-100mm-f2n-d40-lens-samples-6.jpg

When they were shooting on D90, there was a completely different light, namely, it was quite passive. At d40 - another day, another light. This is true, by the way.

The lighting conditions are cloudy, the light is very, very soft, any matrix will be on the shoulder.
The most important thing is that both frames are exposed very, very accurately, instrumental metering in different places with an eyedropper confirms this.

For the purity of the experiment, it would be better to conduct it with mobs, but what is there is something, it’s even more reckless.

      01

First, let's tidy up the white balance, for this we simply move the sliders ... by eye. On an uncalibrated TN monitor in a 12-year-old laptop. As can be seen - one that's 90% of cases. But this is, in fact, simply adjust the camera.

As you can see - it’s already very good, I would say that this is somewhere around 90% of the case. But this is just, in fact, fine-tuning the camera, and not photoshoping at all.

Next, a couple more movements in Color Efex, and here's the finished result.

      yongnuo_100mm_f2n_d40_lens_samples_6

Subjectively, skinton is 98-99% identical, which means if you don’t say in advance what is where, the same 99% of photographers will not see any difference.
I repeat - all this in a hurry, and from jpeg'ov.

Who will have any opinions, who else clearly sees the difference?

      • Onotole

A little explanation - that was the most honest, we must look not to the person, because in these areas the conditions are obviously still a little different, but on the neck, chest and hands.

      • Valentine

Onotole, to what? Most of the audience of this blog is looking for color and sharpness out of the box, so they don't want to modify anything in principle. Do not convince them with your experiment. The smaller part already understands that the frame is being finalized to the desired result. The LR / ACR at random can be called 7 different tools to change the color. Native free programs are not so rich, but 3-5 color tools are always provided as well. It is important that wrote Arkady - the conditions of filming for D40 and D90 were different. I would also add that the settings they were placed different.

        • Andrei

If there is a need to edit each picture, then you need to change, as you put it, the box. Or a system. There is no need to lump together those who “do not want in principle” and those who do not want to do editing 100% of the time.

          • Valentine

No different from editing the conversion? Then, yes, look for the miracle of the box. The parameters of the image are set in the camera (good jpg is the ability to do everything at once during the shooting), but with a raw converter it allows you to refine and change them. Specifically, the same pro Editing: modifying or not - depends more on their own demands to the image, but not on camera. Good processing is as important a part of photography as the shooting itself. You can argue with this, you can disagree - this is your right if you are shooting for yourself. But you can not even think about any more or less serious commerce without this. And again, adjusting the D90 for a pleasant color under the shadow is not a problem, but why waste time on this if the portrait still needs to be retouched - when retouching, the parameters will still have to be adjusted more subtly.

            • Andrei

Even without your teachings, I understand why people who shoot with Nikon's crops insist on total post-processing ...

              • Sergei

And why all these disputes and disagreements? because they don’t argue about tastes! to each his own, each his own, look.
what are you trying to come to these disputes?

              • anonym

They simply try to convey to you that the output image is the result of processing in a converter or in a camera. Do not want in the converter? Set up profiles in the camera, which is about the same. Can't or sloth? Buy an iPhone. Nikon, Canon, Fuji and even Hassel in this case are useless and even harmful

              • Michael

Oh well. Boot taught me from the first frame to RAV and processing. And on Nikon, even a couple of times it turned out to immediately get the desired result. There is no need here about the “divine” color rendition of Fujs with Boots to push. Processing required 100% of frames always

            • Novel

Any photo requires processing. Absolutely any. You can always improve something, just a good photo and improve it more pleasantly, and the result can be more interesting to get. Unless you take a view from the window of your crusher into a neighboring landfill in order to compare how sharpness differs in hole 8 on that stunted tree in the upper right corner. It seems that people absolutely forgot about what photography is and are measured only by the degree of sharpening of the chisel and the power of the puncher, not paying attention to what kind of house it turned out as a result.

              • Boris

Not absolutely, but many. To shoot in jpg is not an anomaly, if you understand what you are doing and the conditions allow. For 5D, of course, too, most of the frames were processed when they pulled commerce.

              • Andrei

Here you need to define the terms. 3-4 clicks on RAW in LR in 30 seconds I do not consider "processing", this is so - an easy optimization. “Processing” is when there are problems with highlights / shadows and color, and these problems have to be fiddled with. On a decent camera and with a good lens, the percentage of such frames is no more than 10-15.

        • nikop

Quite the contrary, here the audience loves to do color and do not forget about cameras.

      • andrey.ali

I see this green in the lights and shadows, and immediately wrote about it. because he sold d7200, tired of messing around in the editors.

        • NE

But I really like the A7 in terms of skin tone out of the box ...

      • Alexey

In my opinion, the difference after processing remained, the shades did not become warm like those of d40.

        • Boris

Arkady published the sources and posted a link to the processed photos. And with the D40 and D90 with the final photos of equally high quality. If you compare one with the other, the color is different, but the processed photos themselves do not become worse or better from this. When we look at a series of processed frames from the D90, they are perceived as absolutely normal. And separately we look at the series with D40 - it is also absolutely normal. The game of colors and shades begins when pictures with different cameras peremashany with each other. Then the eye begins to adapt to the warmer and more saturated colors and highlight how deffektnye less saturated and warm, although the latter is not in any particular defect stardayut. Experienced photographers know not to mix up photos from different cameras.

        • Valentine

DSC_6932 is not a simple shot - it was shot in the shadows, most likely near the foliage. The BB is cold and taken by the camera to the green (Adobe Camera Raw shows -27 to the green). Also, ADL is turned on at extra high, that is, with this BB, the camera still seriously underexposes the frame and draws shadows. The lack of magenta makes the skin grayish-greenish. Then the effect of a simple BB correction is not so easy to eliminate (there will be areas that are too warm and saturated), therefore, in addition to the general one, it is necessary to make a local correction. It is possible that such settings were influenced by the lens itself in specific shooting conditions. But here you can be sure only by comparing the settings with him and, for example, with Nikon's 85 in the same conditions.

      • Jury

I tried a very simple treatment option, like anything, but it is interesting readers' opinion. For RAW file ready lut applied from the program 3DLUTCreator + bb slightly corrected and move the sliders standard - exposure, contrast, saturation, light, shadow. https://ibb.co/fdV94J

        • Polo

Part of the skin became warmer, part remained faded and gray. This is not good. And on the legs the light patches went to the cutoff.

          • Jury

            Option from C1 https://ibb.co/daoqDd

            • Valentine

Overkill, too warm, almost orange already. Well, sharpness without retouching does not add advantages to the picture. Your eye may like it, but from the outside it is obvious - too much.

            • Onotole

Here, too, a little overexposed and even a little too much heat taken away, beyond measure.

          • Polo

            I would suggest this option
            DSC_6932

            • Igor

Yours is the best ... clean legs and model looks great! What editor do you use, if not a secret?

              • Polo

                Everything in camera raw.

        • Onotole

          Here is a wild overexposure.

It seems to me or every post begins to turn into a discussion of the skin of Nikon? Straight half comments

    • Novel

Yes, these old farts have already been pulled up. There is nothing worse than a vile soviet techie who has climbed into art. Some kind of radio engineer who takes off his typical shit and picks on pixel color and edge sharpness. Worse than audiophilia with a warm tube sound may be Nikon's skinton. Well, or Sony skinton. The shooting conditions are different. He led him into the shade of the trees - he got a green tint. Bred in the sun - yellow. The skin is burnt - red. He twisted it with curves and led to the norm, in a series of hundreds of photos almost everyone will walk back and forth. When processing, then everything is driven into the task, because raw photos, besides the old drocher, are of no interest to anyone. Shoot more and learn retouching so that the output is a picture, not an image.

  • Oleg

The problem with Yangnu is the spread of quality, I bought 35mm, when focusing, the focus goes into milk, I need 10 frames to focus on one point and focus only on that point, and that's not a fact, at 100k my friend stopped focusing on after a week of work principle

    • Vitaly N

I bought a 35-ku Yaga. On the D3200 Stable small frontfokus and often unwillingness to refocus with a small change in the distance. Stable front focus for a couple on the D5100! meters. On the D700 earned very well. A lottery in its purest form. And judging by the feedback about the refusals, relatives come out cheaper in terms of price / service life.

  • Egor

Please tell me when choosing a 100 mm lens for the Nikon D5100: Kaleinar-5N for up to $ 100 or Yongnuo 100/2 for $ 170? If you pay more, then what does the Chinese have: dubious autofocus or working aperture 2.0? I rent for myself, slowly, I have experience with manual optics. Especially interesting is the opinion of those who shot on Kaleinar

    • Novel

I have played enough with different manual optics and I can honestly say that even noisy and slow and not the most accurate autofocus is better than a manual if it comes to at least some more or less work. In order not to have to rejoice at a sharp frame instead of a good frame.

    • Boris

For YN: 1. Autofocus, 2. Automatic metering, 3. Better enlightenment, 9 aperture blades. Weaving on a crop - a thing speytsifichnaya. I would take 50 or wait 85.

      • Egor

50 mm is Helios-81N and Industar-61LZ, I will not exchange them for anything)

    • Arkady Shapoval

I recommend YN. Autofocus decides a lot, but at F / 2.8 it will not be a bit worse than Kaleinar.

    • Egor

Thanks for answers. Helped to decide. And if YN100mm does not like it, he will be interested in someone on the secondary.
The main thing is to have a stable connection with the camera, and not like in the YN50mm.

      • Eugene

Kaleinar 5H can be bought for much less than $ 100. And even with dandelion. I have it with a chip. It turns out pretty good portraits, although you still have to adjust the light and shadow a little in the editor. Now I'm waiting for YN100mm F2N from Aliexpress.

  • Peter Sh.

The lens is very interesting, for fans just right.

Quite unusually not friendly with backlight.
Here, in the dark, from the spotlights directly into the eye, the contrast does not drop much:

    610_2366_00006

  • Peter Sh.

In ordinary mixed light, with many reflective surfaces, things are much worse. In both examples, the aperture is f / 2.0

    610_5411_00005

  • Eugene

I'm sorry, but still, what should a beginner choose as the first “portrait lens” to use on a D700 used Nikon 85mm 1.8D or YN100mm F2N?

    • Arkady Shapoval

The original 85 / 1.8D is a very reliable lens, and I recommend it.

      • Eugene

        Thank you.

  • Gsi

Arkady, thanks for your reviews. Your work has already become akin to Wikipedia for amateur photographers!)
Thanks to your review, I decided to take a closer look at this "weave" from Yongnuo, but I would like to hear the opinion of the author of the review.
I look at the crop from Nikon as a portrait-moderate telephoto. Interested explained krupnolitsevue portraits in a leisurely atmosphere and sometimes Full moderate dynamics. Nikkor 50mm 1.8D looked like a budget set (I know, I know - not a “portrait lens”))), for full growth and dynamics, and for quiet portrait shooting - Jupiter 37A. I understand that without the AF, understand that 135 to krpop and 3,5 impose restrictions essential, but this- leisurely shoulder portrait.
I know about all the nuances of these two lenses, focusing with your hands for a portrait does not bother, but the price of a set of 100 € - captivates.
Question - Yongnuo 100mm f2.0 cost about 170 € on how many wins in comparison with these two lenses? More precisely, whether the AF speed, tenacity and bokeh pattern "fifty" significantly loses. The second question from the category of taste - is the lens drawing in comparison with the Jupiter 37A losing in your opinion?
    Thank you

    • Arkady Shapoval

Yongnuo 100/2 versus Jupiter-37A is a manual or autofocus question. My definitive answer is autofocus.
Question 50 / 1.8d against Yongnuo 100/2 for a portrait does have one single answer in favor of the Chinese.
I would take both 50 / 1.8d (or older counterparts) and Yongnuo 100/2.
In general, if I ignore myself very much, then personally all sorts of Zeiss 135 / 2,8 after the release of Yongnuo lose their meaning. Autofocus and F / 2.0 do their job.
Drawing is a matter of taste, Jupiter is subjectively more interesting, since it is "longer".

      • Gsi

        Thank you for your reply!
        Your position is clear.

  • Gsi

To the previous question, is it worth taking one Yongnuo against these two glasses?
    Thank you)

    • nrg917@yandex.ua

Poltiniik is not a portrait from the word at all, even on crop. Jupiter is a bit long for a crop, but a bit dark. The choice in favor of Yagi is obvious

      • Boris

Nevertheless, more than XNUMX portraits were filmed on fifty dollars on crop than on any lens with other focal lengths. Any review fifty dollars without portraits is not complete. This is generally a difficult topic about portraits, and what to shoot them for. Dogmatism here is more likely to interfere than to clarify something, especially for beginners.

    • Onotole

And even better - for the crop - an 85mm lens. Really more convenient in the vast majority of cases.

  • Gsi

Thanks for answers. Well, for gentlemen who say clichés in the style of "a portrait portrait is not a portrait from a drain at all" I recommend to expand your own horizons to look at the work of Poroffi made for half a month, and not even on a crop, where he is "honest fifty", at least Khristich, to understand the depth of their misconceptions about portrait photography!

  • Gsi

Relatively 85mm, here is the issue price increases disproportionately to the difference in the results obtained. Many excellent portraits made on sprinkled on nikor 50mm and 37mm Jupiter 135A., Which is 100 €. Minimum 85mm 1.8D - 200 €, with a double budget the difference in the final result for non-commercial photography will not be so significant

    • Onotole

Well, with this approach, you can shoot on a smartphone - after all, many excellent portraits were shot with a smartphone camera, and the difference for non-commercial photography is also insignificant.
Nowhere and never (especially in photographic equipment) you will not find one that paid 2 times more and the quality also increased exactly 2 times. In the best case, for this result, the budget should be increased 10 times.
And yet - $ 200 is an autofocus 85. It is incorrect to compare a little with Jupiter, which has never been and will never have autofocus. Non-autofocus native 85s can be found much cheaper.

  • Gsi

“Poltinik is not a portraitist from the word at all”! - typo)

  • Gsi

The question of choice has been resolved in favor of Yongnuo 100mm and nikkor 50 1.8d!)
Together, both of them will cost less than 85 1.8D!)

    • Andrey T.

85mm (good workmanship) is the aristocracy of lenses. Hence the corresponding price. Specifically, for this Nikkor 350 bucks is quite adequate. Although the right price for it in terms of picture quality, IMHO, under 20 sput.

  • Vladimir

Thank you Arkady for the review, now I will definitely buy.

  • Volodymyr

The 12 megapixel sharpness score (D90, D700) is a little unclear. If the sharpness is low, I usually reduces the resolution when converting, and then even the old lenses "play." Now cameras mostly come from 20 megapixels, and full-frame cameras are twice as high. Therefore, as for me it is very strange to judge the sharpness of the old cameras. Although, just for instance, if the resize 10-12 MP is such a picture, it is normal.

  • Igor

Arkady is planning to buy this obpktiv k nikon d300s, but after reading Chroslav's response, he began to doubt. Yaroslav's entire review: "Yaroslav
    11.07.2018
He became the happy owner of the lens from this review. I want to note right away. Works fine on the D700. Focusing is accurate, the picture is very nice, no problems. But on the D300S, everything turned out to be very sad. Sheer marriage. A focus miss in 90% of the frames. Besides, I don’t know why, but the color is just disgusting compared to seven hundred.
In general, impressions are more positive. This weekend, I’ll check the lens in a wedding shooting fight and later write about my deeper impressions.
Thanks again to Arkady for the lens and for the review, even if I read it after the purchase)) ”What could be the reasons for the lens's lack of friendship with the nikon d300s ???

    • Denis

And what is reliable (and even just - beautiful) color reproduction - is this necessary only for chtoli professionals, in your opinion?
Or did someone say somewhere that pros should rush to buy Yaga and D90 ??
Or comments under articles you can leave only pros ???

Something I did not understand at all the meaning of your shit ...

Weaving a crop with F2 is it bad? Olympus 75mm f1.8, positioned as an excellent portrait lens, gives the same 150 mm on its crop. Its used version is cheaper than 35 thousand and it is difficult to find. Therefore, a 150 mm focal length with good aperture is not at all contraindicated for a portrait. It turns out again some kind of dogmatism in the comments and the desire to drive everyone else into their own framework.

      • Passed by .......

And yes - you can find anything and damp for money - here dogmatism does not rule - the main thing is to be able to search))). Although objectively all these libels of mine are going nowhere - amusing)))

I’m wondering how you, being SO drunk, managed to start your computer, and even go to Radozhiva?
Any normal person with such intoxication should just roll around and hum inarticulate, and you - write and send! Lump!

Summer, vacation. Cockroaches in my head from idleness riot. With horror you look at the school, already looming on the horizon.

You should have seen what the “professionals” shoot with. Often D90 at best. And you cannot call them amateurs - they earn money from this. But you can't write without quotation marks. If you look at the amateurs, they have both cameras and better lenses. Sometimes you will pass figs in the "tourist" places - they pester you to take an express photo.

      • Valentine

This is the paradox: commercial photographers often do not hesitate to shoot with affordable cameras and get excellent results (for example, from the same D90 and D7000 to this day), and home lovers are worried about buying D700 / D800 / D3, which are difficult for them and unsuitable for the ultimate purpose of use. Ultimately, your professionalism is judged by the issued images, and not by your camera.

        • Peter Sh.

Once I was shooting competitions and decided to see what colleagues are removed. As a result, I did not work - at a distance can only learn a brand of lens. To know the camera model, you need to get close, to ask not to move and read the inscription.

Something like this. Folklore about “all professionals”.

          • Vitaly N

I didn't write about everyone. At weddings and tourist spots, you can easily walk up and see. And also when viewing Olkh - what services the seller of photographic equipment offers.
Yes, and the answer was passing to the topic of color rendition. Judging by the available wedding and other photos, she does not care about anyone. Or I come across such pros.

          • Onotole

This is a common problem for equipment manufacturers, and first of all, such as Canon and Nikon: in general, it is just a BBC (Big Black Camera), and they differ from each other in the first approximation only in size, and then a little. If you manage to get a closer look - then we can pay attention to the presence / absence of "overhead" and a kind of "tower", but also - so it will be possible to find out except that a camera class (amateur, semi-pro or pro); even FX from DX (eg D6X0 from D7X00) is almost impossible to distinguish without looking at the nameplate. Confusion also added battery grip.
By the way, the opposite example: if someone shoots on Df - usually it can be seen a mile away :).
In principle, the same can be said about such things as modern phones (in the best case, it will be possible to determine only the brand, and even then - by an expert), or, for example, almost any modern car.

One day I saw on the set ... my friend, look at the famous successful fotik and read about the technique they use. The masterpiece can also be removed at the zenith with a gel on delay - we are talking about a photo as a job. About photography as a career. About photography as art. There are even solid ones and fives from Sapog - on World Press Foto ... well, typical nikons. Guys sorry for you really

              Did you attack again?

I have a colleague I know who is very talented, but doesn't know what post processing is. It helps me sometimes, I then bring his work to mind. So when he smears well, he calls me and tells me how I can't do anything, and my hands are out of my ass. Like, Petya, how could you, why did you wipe all the noise from me, the whole soul is in the noise! I say, Seryoga, this is the way it should be, this is the standard, everyone does it. He's the fuck your standard, amateurs unfinished! And so on and so forth.
The next day, he doesn’t remember anything.

The model in the flamingo-colored dress is very beautiful, and the photos with her are good!

I bought it on Ali. Worried about what would happen to the quality. Everything turned out great! Both lenses were sealed with films. I immediately flashed it to firmware v1.05 (I downloaded it from the link provided by Arkady in this review, for which I thank him additionally). Beck and front focus is not. Portraits come out wonderful. Perhaps with the fixes 35, 50 and this lens, 85 is no longer needed. The D5100 looks solid. Through Ali, it turned out to be 1000 g. cheaper than buy in Ukraine. Glad I got it. I recommend. Arkady, thanks for the review.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Thanks for the feedback. Do you have a focus ring that also taps a little if you touch it lightly?

      • Eugene

It spins easily, but does not tap when touched. If you take it from 2 sides with your fingers and stagger forcibly. then served a little without knocking. But the play is probably no more than 0,1 mm.

        • Alexander

Please give a link to Ali on this lens

          • Eugene

Arkady has links in the review. I took here:
            http://ali.pub/2pgd5v
I liked the seller. Sent it quickly. But prices change - then there was a price of 150 US dollars.
You can score “YN100mm F2N” in the search on Ali and choose by price and by the number of sales and positive reviews.

            • Eugene

The link was not copied correctly - here's a repeat: http://ali.pub/39pc1e

              • Arkady Shapoval

On Radozhiv, links to ali are shortened so that it is visually more beautiful, and not such long gibberish.
(In the comment above I left it as it is).

Yesterday all day I shot in the studio clothes for the catalog. There was an opportunity to check this lens in battle. You know, very good, coped with all the tasks. The only thing is that D3s was buggy with it, but this is nonsense. D3s is capricious in this regard, even with Chinese flashes.
The skin of the models was smooth, without abnormal spots and shades. But then again, this is consumer goods, there can be no talk of any artistry here.

I specifically took all sorts of different things for comparison, including the manual 105-f / 2.5, 85mm f / 1.8D, etc. Most of the time I shot at 80-200mm 2.8.
I was quite surprised when I looked at the result of working on a computer.

In terms of picture quality (contrast, midtones, etc.), the manual 105 turned out to be the best. But she just had a wild amount of marriage due to misses in focus. And with focus I tried very hard, I almost fell out of my eyes. I was sure that everything would be all right, but it won’t ..

Hence the conclusion - Yaga's autofocus trumps all the advantages of kosher manual Nikon. And note that this Yaga has very few shortcomings, one might say there are none at all. Kartika is like 85, and AF is about the same. And what creaks and rumbles is all garbage, not the most important thing.

    • Arkady Shapoval

And how exactly with d3s was it buggy?

      • Peter Sh.

There was something strange with the exposure, everything was dark. Hands exposed.
Autofocus is OK. By the way, D3s does not turn on at all with the Yongnuo 35mm.

On the other cameras (D610, D200, D70s, Fuji s5 pro) it works relatively well.

        • Eugene

There is not enough contrast when shooting in side and backlight. Then you refine it in the editor. I tried to just cover with my hand - even so - another matter. I ordered a metal hood with a 58th thread and a skirt length of 40 mm for Ali. When he comes - I will unsubscribe.

          • Denis

in fact, the hand works better than the hood)

          • Peter Sh.

Drop in contrast, haze, veil, etc. - a common thing and almost all such lenses, to a greater or lesser extent. The new ones have all sorts of modern technologies there.
The hood comes to him from Kenon, with a clothespin. I recommend it is much easier to take off and put on.

            • RA4ADF

I apologize for the amateurishness, but what kind of hood is this with a clothespin and where to buy it?

              • Peter Sh.

                Why amateurism, a normal question))
The Canon 100mm f / 2 lens hood fits on it. It snaps into a groove near the edge itself. No need to screw into the thread for the filter.
I think the Chinese one will do as well, but not the fact that it will not hang out. But still better than nothing.

              • Igor

ET-65III on Ali 1.5 $ I ordered myself waiting for the lens and lens hood.

  • Matthew

I liked the review and I think it will come in handy when choosing another lens for purchase!

  • Igor

Gentlemen and comrades, does anyone have experience using this lens on the Nikon D300s ??? I read one review in comments about his unfriendlyness with this camera and now hesitated.

  • Anna

For weddings (Nikon D600) which lens will give the best result on the picture - Yongnuo 100mm Nikkor 85mm or D. Thank you.
