Canon EOS D30 (2000, 3 megapixel, Canon's first CLC)

A small excursion during the Palio-Camero-olita.

Canon EOS D30 Camera (not to be confused with Canon EOS 30D, and not to be confused with Canon Powershot D30) was introduced on May 17 back in 2000 and became the first classic digital SLR camera from Canon, as well as the first digital SLR camera that uses a CMOS sensor.

Canon EOS D30

Canon EOS D30 (the photo shows the camera with a lens Canon Zoom Lens EF 24-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5)

Prior to the Canon D30, there were other Canon Central Control Units:

  • Canon EOS DCS5 - March 1995, 1.3 MP, Kf =2.6x.
  • Canon EOS DCS3 (was in 3 modifications: 3s, 3m, 3IR) - July 1995, APS-C Kf =1.6x, 1.3 MP.
  • Canon EOS DCS1 - December 1995, APS-H Kf =1.3x6 MP.
  • Canon EOS D2000 - May 1998, APS-C Kf =1.6x, 2 MP, with 1.8 ″ display.
  • Canon EOS D6000 - December 1998, APS-H Kf =1.3x, 6 MP, with 1.8 ″ display.

In fact, all these cameras were based on the Canon EOS-1n film with different Kodak digital CCD backs, which were called DCS (Digital Camera System), but sold under the Canon brand name. It’s not customary to talk about them, as about the “real” Canon digital SLR cameras.

The matrix (sensor) of the Canon EOS D30 camera:

  1. The Canon EOS D30 is a crop camera. It uses APS-C sensor format with crop factor Kf = 1.6x. The size of the sensor is 22.7 X 15.1 mm. Most likely this value crop factor was inherited from Canon EOS DCS 3 and Canon EOS D2000 (co-production of Canon / Kodak). Canon EOS D30 created an entire evolutionary branch of cropped cameras with the same physical sensor dimensions (this crop factor eventually moved to mirrorless cameras of the series Canon EOS M). The large physical size of the sensor is one of the main advantages of the CZK. The physical sensor size of the Canon EOS D30 is the same as that of modern DSLRs Canon EOS 7D Mark II, Canon EOS 80D or Canon EOS 4000D. Other manufacturers of CZKs make APS-C cameras with crop factor Kf = 1.5x. As a result, the Canon APS-C uses a sensor with a physical area of 10% less than other manufacturers. Calculations can be viewed here.
  2. Despite the fact that the Canon EOS D30 has a cropped matrix, it still uses Canon EF mount (designed for classic full-frame lenses). As a result, with the Canon EOS D30 can not use original 'cropped' Canon EF-S Lenses. This makes it difficult to select lenses with convenient sets of focal lengths. This situation is observed not only with the Canon EOS D30, but also with other subsequent cameras with an APS-C sensor: Canon EOS D60 Digital и Canon EOS 10D Digital. Only in August 2003, cameras with APS-C sensors begin to support cropped Canon EF-S Lenses (the model becomes the first camera Canon EOS 300D Digital) At the same time, cropped lenses from third-party manufacturers are compatible with the Canon EOS D30 (line Tamron DI II, Sigma dc, Tokina dx etc.)
  3. The Canon EOS D30 is the first camera from Canon to use a sensor manufactured by CMOS. It is very symbolic that the very first CZK Canon immediately began to use technology new for that time. For example, Nikon introduced this technology only four years later (model Nikon D2XSeptember 2004). Also, Nikon released as many as 13 cameras with a CCD sensor, Canon only has one (Canon EOS-1 D, 2001).
  4. The Canon EOS D30 has a sensor on 3 MP. Total pixels / subpixels 3.25 million (2226 × 1460). The effective pixels are 3.11 million (final image 2160 X 1440). In the camera menu, you can select another size of the resulting image - 1440 x 960 (Small / Fine, Small / Normal). For our time, 3 megapixels is very small. At the same time, even this amount is quite enough for a huge number of photo tasks, for example, publishing a photo on social networks, printing a 10 X 15 cm photo, wallpapers for FULL HD displays, etc. Not in gigapixels happiness.
  5. Canon EOS D30 can use the ISO range from 100 to 1600 units. The step is 1 step (only one of five values of ISO 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600 can be set). There is no automatic ISO selection.
  6. At ISO 100-400, a silent picture is obtained. The noise level in this ISO range is very low. I was pleasantly surprised that an eighteen-year-old camera might.
  7. Step exposure is 1/3 or 1/2 step. Exposure from 30 seconds to 1/4000 seconds.
  8. The Canon EOS D30 is one of the few cameras of its time that could use ISO 100. For example, the Nikon D1 cameras, D1h, D100, used a minimum of ISO 200, D1x - ISO 125, Fujifilm FinePix S1 Pro - ISO 320.
  9. The Canon EOS D30 supports long exposure noise reduction. The function is activated in menu C.Fn, setting 01.
  10. Canon EOS D30 has no image quality settingssuch as sharpness, contrast, saturation, color space, etc. You can only set the image size to Large / Small and the compression level for JPEG to Fine or Normal.
  11. Visually, the Canon EOS D30 AA filter shimmers with shades of red, almost all modern sensors shimmer with shades of green (example).

Frame buffer

The camera does not show the number of frames that it can take before the buffer is full. Below I will indicate the number of frames that the camera takes without a hitch when using a memory card Kingstone 2GB 266X Compact Flash Ultimate (CF / 2GB-U2):

  • 12 frames Large Fine (instructions indicated 8)
  • 25 frames Large Normal (instructions indicated 17)
  • 20 frames Small Fine (instructions indicated 17)
  • 30 frames Small Normal (instructions indicated 30)
  • 5 frames in RAW format (indicated in the manual 3)

In Large Fine mode, after the buffer is full, the Canon EOS D30 shoots at about 1 frame per second. However, until the camera completely writes all the data from the frame buffer to the memory card, it will be impossible to use the menu. Frame buffer, as for such an old camera, is at a decent level.

A 2 GB memory card contains about 1500-2000 JPEG Large Fine files and about 500-700 RAW frames.

Canon D30 only works with memory cards up to 2 GB. With memory cards of large volumes, an error is displayed.

Important properties

  • The Canon EOS D30 is the first camera to use E-TTL flash units. This technology is still used today. Actually, this served to create a new line of flashes Canon EX Speedlite
  • There is no standard USB port for transferring recorded material. Need to use special cable IFC-200 PCU for connecting the camera to a computer
  • maximum burst speed 3 frames per secondbut only in ONE SHOT mode. In AI-SERVO mode, the maximum speed is 2.5 frames
  • useful monochrome display for quick setting of basic parameters. For quick ISO setting in the menu, set C.FN-> 12 (SET button func. Wehn shooting) -> 2. Change ISO speed, after which ISO can be changed by pressing the central button of the control wheel
  • Canon D30 has a small menu. Dealing with the camera is very, very simple, even though the Canon D30 no Russian language.
  • two modes are available for viewing images - normal (only the image is displayed) and extended (displayed bar chart.ISO BB, shooting mode, shutter speed, aperture, date and time, image quality and compensation exposure) Illuminated areas cannot be viewed. In advanced mode display bar charts slows down for 1 second
  • while viewing captured photos, you can zoom in, but only 1 time. After which the image is divided into 9 parts, which in turn can be viewed
  • The camera weighs 780 grams and this is without a memory card and battery. At the heart of the camera body is a metal chassis, to the touch the camera seems very strong and reliable. At the same time on the review I had a camera Nikon D100, from about the same era that significantly lost the Canon EOS D30 to the touch
  • Canon EOS D30 is one of the two cameras with the letter 'D' in the name before the number (the second is Canon EOS D60 Digital) Subsequently, the letter was placed after the number (possibly because of this reason)
  • unfortunately Canon EOS D30 uses very simple focusing systemwhich has only 3 points. This same focusing system can still be found in Canon EOS D60 Digital.
  • for measuring exposure uses a 35-zone SPC sensor, which can be found in a huge number of cameras from Canon, for example, even in 50D or 5D MarkII.

My experience

I was just amazed at the capabilities of the Canon EOS D30. If not for the small display, then distinguish the Canon EOS D30 from later models, for example, such as the Canon EOS 20DThe 30D would be almost impossible.

It was a pleasure to work with the Canon EOS D30, all the same, $ 2600 of the cost (price at the time of the announcement) still made itself felt, especially in some little things.

Canon EOS D30 is much better thought out and looks more concise than other cameras of that era. Although the Canon EOS D30 was Canon’s first native CZK, it resembles the DSLRs we are used to the most.

After working with the Canon EOS D30, I had only one conclusion - at one time Canon made a colossal leap forward in the camera industry, ahead in many ways (especially in some details) of other manufacturers.

  • Rodion

The review is super, the thoughtfulness of the camera is really amazing. What can we say about the quality of the picture, which is amazing for such an old device.

  • 4ma

The camera is simply gorgeous for his age and especially the body

  • ñ

it all started so well ...

  • anonym

Gorgeous colors, and in general the picture resembles Fujik pro5! Once again, I am convinced that they used to be honest.

  • Н

2600 Baku for 3 MP! Thank you for the Paleozoic!

    • Mr. Boggy

This is not the Paleozoic, this is the Mesozoic. Paleozoic is the 90s when Kenon and Kodak made Canon Eos DCS - 3, DCS -1, DCS - 5, D2000, D6000 there were such prices and characteristics, real Paleozoic ...

  • zengarden

How lovely! :) from the time when we relied on quality, not quantity

  • Valentine

And what about the sensations of the D30 and D100 - which one was more convenient to shoot, with which one was it easier to get the desired result? All the same, the characteristics of the matrices, modest by today's standards, make themselves felt, so it’s interesting how these cameras feel from the very process of working with them. By the way, we liked the 3 megapixels very much, and you got an excellent return flow. Thanks.

    • Arkady Shapoval

I'll make a reservation right away - d30 and d100 - cameras are different, it's difficult to evaluate them in one phrase.

If we take directly the convenience of shooting, then the d100 for me personally goes head first because of the more tenacious autofocus. For the convenience of control in general, the d100 is very annoying the main control dial, the d30 control in general is a bit more concise.

In the general case, however, it is more convenient to finish 6 megapixels with a d100 than with a d30.

The colors of the cameras are radically different, like the contrast, you need to get used to them. Because I'm big amateur old 6MP CCD, then I would have left just the D100.

      • Dmitriy

d100, I think it’s more correct to compare not with d30, but with 10d. And then you have to think about which camera is better

  • Dmitriy

Its advantages stem from the fact that this is essentially the first CZK, which was not made from a film SLR, but created from scratch, using the achievements of the film era.

  • Alexey de Paris

And let the tradition of writing retro reviews continue! This is interesting for amateur photographers in every way!

The Canon EOS D30 wasn't Barney's first DSLR. But it was the first one he wanted. In this week's Throwback Thursday, he explains why. Read more

    • Andrei

      Read the headline carefully.
THERE IS WRITTEN THAT THIS IS THE FIRST CZK from KENON = made kenon, and not a re-glued nameplate for someone else’s craft.
Earlier cameras have been listed, but they are a symbiosis of several manufacturers. And here they are from and to. Feel the difference?
It’s like a child. Then he goes with his mother for the handle, and then he cuts himself.

      • Onotole

Read carefully what you are responding to. That post has nothing to do with the subject matter, despite the fact that D30 is mentioned there.

  • Hermann

Thanks for the review, Arkady, a very hearty and surprising picture with 3 megapixels! And why do we need all these 45-50 megapixels? Just go broke on profoptika!
And where can I put it, Arkady, I have a Visa?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Data here, thanks. Better just share the site materials with others, for example, using social networks.

  • sasa13e

Arkady, if you can, please take a photo of your tested devices in front and behind, it’s even interesting in what condition the camera is after so many years.

Read about Sergei Yakovlevich's "goldfish", a man with D30 published his work in galleries! https://birdinflight.com/ru/vdohnovenie/opyt/10-lyubimyh-fotografij-sergeya-maksimishina.html

The first canon was D60, the next one ... The picture was actually some kind of "adult" or something, not like many cameras have children's decorations ...

    • Arkady Shapoval

Before the Canon D60 there was the D30, after it 1D, and then the D60.

  • Igor Nikopolsky

Arkady writes: "If it were not for the small display, it would be almost impossible to distinguish the eos d30 from later models such as the eos 20d, 30d." Here's a correction, the eos 20d uses a screen the same size as the d30.

  • Ingvar

This chamber is not Paleozoic but Mesozoic. Paleozoic is KenoKodaki with backdrops.))) Previously, it was honestly just a camera without bells and whistles, solid and reliable, but now wifi and zhps, and not 4k video all became such vloggers straight ... I was 2000 years old in 12, and this camera was at the price of a car ... For us, even 2600 rubles in those days was unbearable. ((((

    • Ingvar

Race of pixels in the current crop IMHO divorce on the headstock, shake and noise. If it was 6mp now, then it would be scary to say what it was!))) But everyone suddenly needed to crop, and let's shoot wide and cut portraits from this, 40 megapixels allows a pancake!)))

      • Denis

well, there would be a race for ISO ... megapixels are better)

        • Ingvar

For the most part, I agree that megapixels are still very necessary, but a reasonable amount is needed. Problems with optics on Kenon's crop cameras at one time just faded into my head. Sigma and Tamrons need to be checked from several pieces - in my city there is no such thing, Elki on my 60D work quite mediocre, and sometimes they miss ... The same Elka 24-105L 4 is very good at 400d, it comes out very sharply and pleasant to the eye, in my opinion everything the same crop 1,6 will be 10 megapixels for the eyes, then there are already some problems. There is also a native 17-55 2.8 on sale, but its price, in the absence of nishtyaks like that of elek, is simply not happy. Now I do not envy the owners of 80d at all, there the pixel cell is even smaller than that of 60d ...

          • Ingvar

How I would like to have dimensions like 10d but with 10 megapixels, from the category “Is there the same, but without wings?”))) After 60d, the crops became not interesting for me ...

  • SKY HD

Thanks. It was nice to read this review. I’m thinking of buying this old man into my collection.

  • Jura z Baikonur

    mm-yeah. In the tsikh six-meapіxelnyh shos also є ...
I’m going to transfer one of them (the camera) to the case: with a great viewer, a double screen and live-in .. all, for the sake of six divine * - *

    • Arkady Shapoval

Actually, there are 3 of them.

  • Mr. Boggy

Oh, I would have it in 2001, in the year of the first serious fishing trips and other adventures, I was then 13 years old, and what my father did not want to fill with Fed 5 in Kodak said that nothing would come of it, I would not be taken to the dacha, because ..., stalls seals were already everywhere, nothing of those years has been removed ...

  • Oleg Osipov

At the time, I had an EOS D60. I still bastard from his picture!

  • Eugene

Some corrections to the article. The camera has image parameters, but they can only be set with the help of software on a PC and only one step from - 1 to +1. The camera can also work with flash cards larger than 2 GB, but for this you need to format the USB flash drive on the PC in the fat file system and After that, still format the device itself. Then a flash drive, say, 4 GB, will read and write files, but with a volume of 2 GB!

  • Mr. boggy

I have 1ds, which will not see more than 8GB, but there is approximately 11mp, so 4GB is enough for the eyes, like an amateur, with its speed of 3 fps. There is a 1D mkII, but I don’t know, it also has its own limitations of the era, it has 32 GB when formatted by the camera, it turns into 16 GB, but if the card is formatted in 5D or 400D, then the reporter sees all 32 Giga. (I was sold it with 32 GB together). It's just that in those days they didn't know that the cards would quickly reach 32, 64, 128, 256 and more Gigs at a price psychologically acceptable for the pros.

  • Sergei

Canon EOS D30 is my first digital camera (as a gift in 2016). The main advantage of this device is that when working with manual Soviet and GDR lenses, it lathers a little!
3 megapixels on a cropped matrix eliminates most of the shortcomings of the optics of film times.

    • Victor

It seems that if you changed the resolution to 32 MP with a 3MP crop matrix on your glasses in the editor, it would “soap a little” in the same way))

      • Sergei

I believe that the noise with an extra-bold pixel will in any case be lower than the noise with a 35 MB pixel on the crop.
What will affect the quality of drawing small details.

      • Mr. boggy

I tried, but from 18 megapixels 60d to reduce to 5 and 3 megapixels. It didn’t really help, there is no that same fatness and with it razor-like MATRIX sharpness, from the new crops the picture looks like ultrasonics with plasticine at 100% magnification.
