TOKINA AF 70-210 1: 4-5.6

In short

The TOKINA AF 70-210 1: 4-5.6 is a compact 3x telephoto zoom lens from the era of film cameras. Functionally very close to the original and inexpensive Nikon 80-200mm AF Nikkor 1: 4.5-5.6D. It can act as a super-budget version of the telephoto. From the obvious strengths of the lens, I can only distinguish a very small cost in the secondary market.

It's important: There are two subversions of this lens. The new version is distinguished by IR marks and a different name near the front lens (TOKINA AF SD 70-210mm 1: 4-5.6).

Assembly

TOKINA AF 70-210 1: 4-5.6 assembled well, with a metal mount. Lens in hand not very good, since the middle part of the lens body is made of thin plastic and is compressed with a little pressure.

The zoom ring is very comfortable, rubberized. Aperture control and focus rings - plastic. A red decorative ring near the front lens adds a solid appearance.

The retractable body frame (trunk) consists of one long section. The lens hood is mounted on this retractable part. It’s a pity, but the lens uses a lens hood that is screwed into the thread of the front filter (not the bayonet type).

The frame of the body (trunk) spontaneously not put forward and does not move, most likely, over time, this problem will nevertheless come. During a change in focal length, the front of the housing, together with the front lens, does not rotate.

When changing the focal length, the rear lens is movable and can act as an air pump.

The direction of rotation of the focus ring and zoom matches the original lens Nikon AF Nikkor 70-210mm 1: 4

Устройство aperture consists of only 6non-rounded petals and forms a hole in the shape of a regular hexagon.

It's nice that the lens has a fairly compact size and uses standard filters with a small diameter of 52 mm.

Focusing

Auto focus speed is average (closer to slow), but it is enough for comfortable shooting.

During focusing, the front lens and the frame for filters spin and drive forward. When changing the focal length, the front lens does not rotate.

The focusing ring is very narrow, plastic, unpleasant to handle. Focus ring rotates 90 degrees. The minimum focusing distance is about 1.2 m. The maximum zoom ratio is achieved at a 210 mm focal length and is 1: 5.1. There is a 'MACRO' marker on the focusing distance scale, but this inscription in no way allows the lens to focus closer than it can.

When used on a camera Nikon D90 (with unpretentious Multi-CAM 1000 focusing system) behaves well, rarely makes a mistake in focusing. On camera Nikon D90 I checked the presence of the back and focus front at different focusing distances and different values of the focal length (infinity and MDF as well). Pictures taken using the Live View mode (which does not suffer from back / front focus) were used as a measure. Focusing accuracy using phase sensors completely coincided with the Live View mode.

It's important: auto focus with this lens is available only when using him on cameras with built-in motor focusing.

Exact list Nikon DSLR cameras without a built-in focus motor, on which this lens will not focus automatically:

Only auto focus and sound confirmation of focus will not work with these cameras, all other important functions, such as automatic exposure metering and automatic iris control, will work well.

You will find a lot of useful information on the types of cameras and lenses Nikon here.

Focus Features:

  1. TOKINA AF 70-210 1: 4-5.6 does not have a focus mode switch. To translate the lens into manual focus on cameras with motor For focusing, use the focus mode switching lever located near the camera mount. For cameras without motor Only manual focus mode will always be available for focusing.
  2. During focusing, the focus ring rotates and must not be touched.
  3. Focus speed may vary slightly from the camera used. This issue has been considered. here.
  4. During focusing, the lens and camera are quite noisy.
  5. There is a small effect of 'Focus Breathing' (changing the viewing angle during focusing).
  6. TOKINA AF 70-210 1: 4-5.6 - a lens from a third-party manufacturer. It may happen that it will not work correctly with some Nikon cameras. Details on this issue are considered by me. here.
  7. When changing the focal length, focusing practically does not go astray.
  8. TOKINA AF 70-210 1: 4-5.6 does not transmit the focus distance to the subject in the camera and is a type lens Nikon NON-D. This may adversely affect measurement accuracy. exposure with some cameras and some flashes at certain settings. My experience shows that by and large the difference will not always be noticeable.
  9. There is no focus distance limiter, for example, Nikon AF Nikkor 75-300mm 1: 4.5-5.6 there is such a limiter.
  10. TOKINA AF 70-210 1: 4-5.6 has no focus problems in Live View (tested on Nikon D90).
  11. Unknown compatibility with teleconverters.
  12. TOKINA AF 70-210 1: 4-5.6 does not have hard stop (hard infinity mechanical stop) which allows you to accurately and quickly focus the lens at infinity under any external conditions.
  13. The direction of rotation of the focus and zoom rings matches the original Nikon 80-200mm AF Nikkor 1: 4.5-5.6D.
  14. The lens has a manual aperture ring. To be able to control the value aperture from camera or for automatic installation aperture On modern central control valves, you need to turn the control ring to the F / 32 value and fix it with a special lock, which is located to the right of the aperture numbers. The number F / 32 and the mark on the lock are the same green. If this is not done, then on some cameras an error will be displayed - 'fEE' (incorrect installation of the ring aperture) Some cameras having diaphragm rheostatallow you to control the aperture using the ring aperturebut only in metering modes exposure 'M' and 'A'. You can read more about this issue in the section on Non-G Lenses. Ring aperture rotates with clicks, the values F / 4, 5.6, 8, 11, 16, 22, 32 (full stops) are plotted on it; set an intermediate value between pairs of numbers using the ring aperture impossible. Intermediate values can only be set using the camera menu.

In the era of digital cameras with a huge number of megapixels, the TOKINA AF 70-210 1: 4-5.6 film lens does not optically shine, but is quite suitable for simple photo tasks, it can be a godsend for a novice photographer or amateur photographer.

My experience

TOKINA AF 70-210 1: 4-5.6 is a super budget solution for those who want to try telephoto shooting. I have already expressed my attitude to such lenses in a review of a similar Tamron AF Tele-Macro 70-210mm 1: 4-5.6 158DN.

Still, 300 mm of focal length at the long end is a little more interesting than 200-210, so I recommend looking at a flotilla of similar budget lenses from Sigma / Quantaray and Tamron / Promaster, for example Quantaray 70-300mm 1: 4-5.6 D LDO MACRO or Tamron AF 75-300mm 1: 4-5.6 LD TELE-MACRO (1: 3.9) 672D.

Results

TOKINA AF 70-210 1: 4-5.6 is a simple telephoto lens for full-frame cameras. Can serve as an alternative to original Nikon 80-200mm AF Nikkor 1: 4.5-5.6D и Nikon AF Nikkor 70-210mm 1: 4-5.6D.

Main advantages

  1. compact dimensions, small diameter of the front filter
  2. very low cost in the secondary market
  3. not slow focusing (comfortable for work)
  4. metal mount, rubberized zoom ring
  5. focus distance window
  6. smooth and proportional aperture drop from 70 to 210 mm focal length
  7. lack of focus-shift during iris
  8. normal sharpness in the center of the frame on covered apertures
  9. focusing practically does not go astray while changing the focal length
  10. aperture control ring (compatible with old film cameras)
  11. weak vignetting on cropped cameras (in this case, Nikon DX), acceptable distortion, sufficient sharpness in the center of the frame on covered apertures, unobtrusive bokeh on open apertures

The main disadvantages

  1. poor quality assembly (flimsy plastic middle part of the lens body, bends under a strong grip)
  2. during focusing, the front lens and the thread under the filters rotate
  3. absence inboard motor focusing, which limits its use with amateur cameras of the Nikon DX series
  4. unpleasant noise during auto focus
  5. rotation of the focus ring during autofocus and, as a result, lack of the function of constant manual focus control
  6. small stroke of the focus ring, narrow, plastic and uncomfortable focus ring
  7. non-bayonet type hood
  8. weak 'MACRO' mode
  9. total 6 aperture blades
  10. lack of a switch for focus modes (the mode must be changed using the lever near the camera mount)
  11. while zooming and / or focusing, the trunk moves forward
  12. the lens does not transmit the focusing distance to the camera (degrades metering exposure, especially with TTL flash)
  13. no depth of field scale and tags for working in the infrared spectrum
  14. rear lens movement while changing the focal length, small effect of a vacuum cleaner / air pump
  15. small effect of 'Focus Breathing' (changes in viewing angle during focusing)
  16. lack of a protective O-ring near the mount and the absence of any dust and moisture protection
  17. outdated model not optimized for use with modern digital cameras
  18. insufficient image quality:
    • low resolution on open apertures
    • tangible chromatic aberration
    • strong freezing and blooming (chromatic aberration in the blur zone on contrasting details)
    • poor resistance to backlight
    • hexagon-shaped blur discs
  19. there may be incompatibility with some cameras and / or teleconverters (no exact data)
  20. lack of data about the lens in modern cameras, which makes it difficult to automatically correct some types of distortion (distortion, vignetting etc.)
  21. lack of lens data in modern RAW converters, which complicates automatic batch processing to quickly eliminate some lens flaws

Tell me, Pavlo, would you like to write such fancy comments? You don't really need to try to get through to practice and write to yourself about something about an active, incl. і Sigma 135mm f / 1.8 DG HSM Art and send it to Arcadia for publication on the website. Do not interfere with us to value someone else’s efforts and use the thought of our people.
The view of the building is worthy. I can’t say anything about the slope itself, because I’m not koristuvavsya such a nicholas and nivit without trimming my hands. And there is a sign of them. Not everything can be allowed for a thousand greens for a drink. Tim, moreover, at once brandy from the first dozens of people for the new happy about "Activate to beat the price is clearly inadequate - a big pipl shavaє, and a fun photographer on the clients sees" є))

Paul! Well, post a review of the Sigma 135mm ART yourself, what's the problem? Find, seek, seize, steal, buy, rent, ask, beg from someone ... do a review for EVERYONE, we read! We are also interested in this))

As TV presenter Vladimir Molchanov said - "A certain category of people writes on television ..."

  • Alexey de Paris

The first time I see such a lens. The colors are not bad, the lens is compact, probably not bad as the first full-frame telephoto if the price is symbolic. I have a similar Tokina but not an autofocus version yet. (maybe another optical scheme) You can’t call it bad considering the price!

  • Michael R

Arkady, as always good, accessible and understandable
Thanks for the work you've done !
I met such a lens at flea markets, but I was afraid to take it "blindly"
    And here is your test
Thank you, as always, you help to figure it out.

    2 Pavel Kozitsky
That just litter writing such comments, as they wrote!
People to celebrate the objective, not only expensive!
If you want to test Sigmi 135 Art - hang yogo Arcadia, win zrobit
And then they called for a free reading of test, who should have been robbing them shamelessly,
and the stench is not good for podyakuvati - there’s no stench that will be here at this point, vimagati and criticism !!
    Nahabni and non-freeloaders!

In fact, I apologize, in the future I will try to do tests for more modern equipment.
At the same time, everything is clear with modern “cool” lenses, but with “no-name” lenses of the old school, everything is not always unambiguous.

        Very helpful review, thanks
, an interesting lens judging by the photo report, in my opinion.

Arkady, in fact, in vain you apologize. Especially before some g * vnom.
Many readers of your site appreciate it precisely for reviews of unpopular technology.
Therefore, do not pay attention to all Kozitsky and continue in the same vein.
        Sincerely, Eugene.

Arkady, do what you like and consider it necessary and do not listen to anyone.
You are doing everything right and well. Your site is unique.
Thanks to you and your site, I became more interested in photographic equipment and a little better at understanding it.

      • 777

There is no need for new technology yet - there are plenty of reviews (honest and paid) of new technology on the internet.
There are not many honest professional Russian speakers.
        PS> From the wishes:
If you can borrow an older Canon 1Ds / Canon 1D it would be great.
For future development - Arkady, you have no comparison tests. I understand that all equipment is presented by a store or people and this is a complexity.
It would also be interesting to see the development of new glasses relative to old ones. For example 35-70 / 2.8, 28-80 / 2.8 and 24-70 / 2.8. Or compare old tamrons / sigma with new ones of the same class ...

I have long wanted to ask (maybe there is already an answer on your site) - very nice and correct color in the photo. How do you get it? I mostly shoot in cancer, then through the lightroom traction. And still, somehow it turns out not so beautiful (

take my sigma art for review, I understand that it’s not 135, but it will also be interesting and not bad for a blog. Until I sold it.

        • Arkady Shapoval

Sigma art is a complicated matter, you need to take it for two weeks, if it suits you :)

  • Oleg

It’s quite normal to do reviews of everything that is. Perhaps it would be nice to take some comparative test photos when it comes to such lenses, with some popular lens, to immediately see the difference or its absence in quality and to read the impression of the difference in shooting convenience. As they say, everything is relative.

Hello, Arkady. Recently, reviews began to resemble a visit to the museum of photographic equipment. Do you really have in Ukraine (especially in Kiev) modern models of the photo industry? You basically do not want to collaborate and take on the reviews of new products in the representative offices of firms? Really nobody buys new models from acquaintances? Is it really that bad? Or are you not interested in this already?

Andrey, do not watch Russian television.
Everything is good in Ukraine. It's just that the founder of this blog has his own vision of what exactly to take for tests.
Any rich fool can go to the boutiques and buy 1DH_Mk2 or D5 and 24-70 / 2.8 or 70-200 / 2.8.
And even make a review for buying, unpacking. But how will it go with pictures on all this splendor - xs ...
For example, I know one deputy of the Council of Deputies of the city settlement of Shchelkovo ShchMR in the city of Moscow, his name is Pavel Zhukov. Consists in United Russia. I recently changed D810 to D5. Why?
Because the money has nowhere to go. And the pictures ... here are obscene ... A person has no understanding of photography at all.
Here we are talking about the fact that, if you have the ability to shoot well on older glasses, you can.
Reviews of new technology in Runet Dofig.

      • Andrew Ch.

I am not an adherent of the Kiselevsko-Solovetsky zombie box. And I wish everything to be good in Ukraine! It just boiled over that knowing how brilliantly Arkady can describe new items and not so much with his vision, read stories about the exhibits of an antique shop with boring comments. All goodness and prosperity!

        • Arkady Shapoval

The topic of politics, even a superficial one, is strictly forbidden on a cozy Radozhivka.

As for the reviews. There are several factors.

          1. Good modern technology needs to be tested on good modern cameras, which I do not have. For example, if I were to review Sigma 135 / 1.8 Art instead of this Tokina on an old Nikon D90, the first 100 comments were whining and reproaches about the incompleteness of the review, because a full-format modern lens needs to be tested on a full-format modern camera.

          2. Modern lenses are not as interesting to test as the nouns of the past era. In short, TOP modern lenses are beautiful. Everyone knows about this and repeating laudatory odes is not so interesting to them. But this does not mean that I do not want to write about modern technology.

          3. If we are talking about top-end lenses, for example, take the new Nikon 24-70 VR, then there will be very few owners. At the same time, there will be many times more owners of some Tamron 70-300 vc or those who want to buy it. Ultimately, the benefits of a low- to mid-range lens review will be greater than the “everyone knows it’s good” review of a top lens. It turns out something like in the joke "she talked about drawing Canon 1Dx Mark II paired with 85 / 1.2, but shot on 550D and 18-55 IS."

          4. TOP lenses are interesting mainly for professionals. Professionals who take photos all day, process and search for locations, models, etc. they are unlikely to watch a review of the TOP lens on any Radozhive. Radozhiva was primarily created for amateur enthusiasts, beginners, perhaps for some professionals. At one time, some materials were not online and I, as a novice photographer, had to fish out the necessary information bit by bit. This was the urge to create a Rainbow.

          5. And, of course, Radozhiva is still exactly my blog, it is not DPreview and not photozone, and especially not dxomark or the site of old Kenny. I’m lucky I can do a lot of reviews in any free time. On the other hand, readers grow up, become more experienced and want or already demand something more from Radozhiva. But there are nuances.

          • Andrew Ch.

No politics - peace, friendship, photo) Thank you for the detailed, but predictable (in sense) answer. Arkady, I have been a reader of Radozhiva for about four years, and I see changes in content and comments. I appreciate your presentation style and original presentation of the material.

Thanks for the review, I did not expect that someone would pay attention to this lens, but meanwhile it is very interesting, I have not needed it for a long time in the clip (there are a lot of lenses overlapping these focal ones of much better quality), but something makes me periodically cling to it ... at first the strong buzzing of the focus annoyed me (thought it was broken) then I realized that everything is ok, and so he gives his corporate picture ... and it is pleasing to the eye, incredibly compact and light for such focus ... I remember all super pro photographers I felt sick at the word Helios (Soviet cheap garbage dump), and now !!!!!! The cult super art lens and, for some reason, everyone already has it at home on the shelf) by the way, oh-oh-very popular in America, and so many people are already interested in the old Tokina, and I think this lens is no exception, it is not cheap it means that it is bad, just inadequate prices for new optics ,,)

Good evening, I hope for your help. Given the same lens for Canon, how to understand what kind of adapter is needed from this lens for the Canon 500D?

  • Trueash

Ndya. This is how you read the review, you think “not a lens, but a slag”, and then you look at the test photos and are impressed. I am far from an expert, but I do not see the “soap” (for example, on a house with lattice turrets, the bricks are clearly visible, in the 4th and 11th pictures the twigs are also quite traced; on the dog there is wool, not plasticine, etc. .). The colors are also quite. It looks like quite decent walking-portrait glass (and plastic: D)

But I now have the opportunity to buy expensive lenses, I’m retired and at the same time, with all the amateur photographer with 40 years of experience, I started shooting on film. I switched to a figure of just like 10 years,
because for a long time I did not want to buy frankly worthless soap dishes and wanted to buy a DSLR. I believe that with such a variety of lenses it is very difficult to understand their characteristics. About TOKINA AF 70-210mm 1; 4-5.6, I understood from the review that it is possible to shoot, and who has curves in their hands and who does not know the theory of photography, nor any kind of super reflex and lens will help. Big respect to the author !!! And about the old equipment, too, you need to do reviews. So I accidentally discovered the Canon G7 and now I’m not parting with it

    Hello!
Is there a more interesting low-end telephoto solution for the Nikon D 90?
I would be grateful for the advice.

Hello Arkady. It is possible to buy for a very inexpensive (~ five hundred rubles) two lenses from the Minolta X300 camera. First Tokina SD 70-210mm 1: 4-5.6
    Second Exakta 28-70mm 1: 3.5-4.8
The question is, can they somehow be adapted to my existing Canon EOS 400D DSLR?

There will be no interference at infinity. Or an adapter with a lens or alteration of the lens.

      • Eugene

Thanks. Those adapters that sell on eBay for $ 20 will help? Should I bother with these lenses?

        • Michael

If with a lens, they will help. But do not bother

    And the last photo
