Assembly

Tamron 28-80 / 3.5-5.6 is assembled well, albeit with a plastic mount. The zoom and focus ring are rubberized and pleasant to the touch. Especially nice focusing ring, which is similar to that of a professional lens Tamron SP AF Aspherical LD [IF] 28-105mm 1: 2.8 276D... Aperture control ring - plastic.

The zoom ring rotates 75 degrees. During a change in focal length, the trunk of the lens moves in a wave-like fashion. The lens takes minimum dimensions at 50 mm focal length and focuses at infinity.

The retractable body frame (trunk) consists of one section. The lens hood is mounted on this retractable part. The hood can be installed in the opposite direction for transportation. I used a lens, most likely with a non-original front cover, with which it is very inconvenient to install a lens hood.

The frame of the body (trunk) spontaneously not put forward and does not move, most likely, over time, this problem will nevertheless come. During a change in focal length, the front of the housing, together with the front lens, does not rotate.

When changing the focal length, the rear lens is movable and can act as an air pump. This behavior of the rear lens is called 'vacuum cleaner effect', which can increase the amount of dust that accumulates in the camera.

The direction of rotation of the zoom ring matches the original similar lens Nikon AF Nikkor 28-80mm 1: 3.5-5.6D.

Устройство aperture consists of only 6non-rounded petals and forms a hole in the shape of a regular hexagon.

Tamron 28-80 / 3.5-5.6 is also available with a silver frame.

Focusing

Auto Focus Speed - high. The lens travel time from infinity and back is the same as with a professional lens Nikon 28-70mm 1: 2.8D AF-S Nikkor ED SWM.

During focusing, the front lens and the frame for filters spin and drive forward. When changing the focal length, the front lens does not rotate.

The focus ring is not wide, but comfortable enough. The focus ring rotates only 90 degrees. The focus ring is paired with the trunk of the lens. Most likely, a high focusing speed is associated with a small stroke of the focusing ring. The ring travel is smooth, I did not find any special problems with manual focusing.

The minimum focusing distance is 70 cm, which in some cases makes it inconvenient, especially in the range of 28-50 mm focal length. The maximum zoom ratio is achieved by 80 mm focal length and is only 1: 8.

When used on a camera Nikon D90 (with unpretentious Multi-CAM 1000 focusing system) behaves well, very rarely makes a mistake in focusing. I found no problems with focusing on Tamron 28-80 / 3.5-5.6.

It's important: auto focus with this lens is available only when using him on cameras with built-in motor focusing.

Exact list Nikon DSLR cameras without a built-in focus motor, on which this lens will not focus automatically:

Only auto focus and sound confirmation of focus will not work with these cameras, all other important functions, such as automatic exposure metering and automatic iris control, will work well.

You will find a lot of useful information on the types of cameras and lenses Nikon here.

Focus Features:

  1. Tamron 28-80 / 3.5-5.6 does not have a focus mode switch. To translate the lens into manual focus on cameras with motor For focusing, use the focus mode switching lever located near the camera mount. For cameras without motor Only manual focus mode will always be available for focusing.
  2. During focusing, the focus ring rotates and must not be touched.
  3. Focus speed may vary slightly from the camera used. This issue has been considered. here.
  4. During focusing, the lens and camera are quite noisy.
  5. The lens transmits the focusing distance to the camera, similar to Nikon 'D'
  6. There is a small effect of 'Focus Breathing' (changing the viewing angle during focusing).
  7. Tamron 28-80 / 3.5-5.6 is a third-party lens. It may happen that it will not work correctly with some Nikon cameras. Details on this issue are considered by me. here.
  8. When changing the focal length, focusing is lost.
  9. Tamron 28-80 / 3.5-5.6 has no focus problems in Live View (tested on Nikon D90).
  10. Unknown compatibility with teleconverters.
  11. Tamron 28-80 / 3.5-5.6 does not have hard stop (hard infinity mechanical stop) which allows you to accurately and quickly focus the lens at infinity under any external conditions.
  12. The lens has a focus distance scale with marks in meters and feet. The scale is plotted on the focus ring. There is no depth of field scale or tags for working in the infrared spectrum.
  13. During a slight autofocus correction, the image in JVI can twitch.
  14. The direction of rotation of the focus ring does not match the original Nikon AF Nikkor 28-80mm 1: 3.5-5.6D (MKII).
  15. The lens has a manual aperture ring. To be able to control the value aperture from camera or for automatic installation aperture on modern central control valves, you need to turn the control ring to the value F / 22. If this is not done, then on a number of cameras, the display will display an error - 'fEE' (ring is not installed aperture) To remove the fixation of the aperture ring, press the small button located on the aperture ring to the left of the F / 22 mark. Some cameras having diaphragm rheostatallow you to control the aperture using the ring aperturebut only in metering modes exposure 'M' and 'A'. You can read more about this issue in the section on Non-G Lenses. Ring aperture rotates with clicks, the values F / 3.5, 5.6, 8, 11, 16, 22 are plotted on it; set an intermediate value between pairs of numbers using the ring aperture impossible. Intermediate values can only be set using the camera menu.

A serious disadvantage of the lens can be considered poor resistance to backlight and nuts in the bokeh. Other indicators are within the normal range for a lens of this class.

My experience

As my anti-crisis review of a hardcore lens showed SIGMA DL ZOOM 35-80mm 1: 4-5.6 MULTI-COATED, not even simple lenses can get a good result.

Tamron AF Aspherical 28-80mm 1: 3.5-5.6 177D on full-frame large-pixel cameras such as Nikon D700, D3, D3s, D4,D4s, visually can produce a much sharper image than some professional lenses on 24 MP cropped cameras, like Nikon D3200, D5200, D5300, D5500, D5600, D7100, D7200 etc.

Of course, I will not recommend this lens to anyone, but as a spare lens just in case, or, as they say, as a camera lens mount lens, this Tamron AF Aspherical 28-80mm 1: 3.5-5.6 177D is very suitable.

Results

Tamron 28-80 / 3.5-5.6 is a nice old man. Very low cost on the secondary market and quite acceptable, as for a lens of this class, image quality and general functionality.

  • Alexey de Paris

Thanks for the review, I have never seen such a lens. Judging by the pictures, it is inferior to Nikkor 28-80 3,3-5,6.

  • zengarden

It looks pretty dumb :) in general Tamrons are not bad (in terms of sharpness, the absence of very noticeable distortions), but there is no “highlight”, charm. For various technical photos it’s normal, but for art - not so.
I say this as the former owner of a pair of Tamrons.

    • NE

In 70-200 di vc I really like the color rendition (a kind of "cinematic"). I rarely use it, mainly because of the mass and size, but the hand does not rise to sell yet

    • Arkady Shapoval

A pair of tamrons is not an indicator. For example, I can indicate that as a reviewer of this "technical" tamron and some dark super-zoom Tamron AF 18-200mm, all Tamrons without a twist.
But the company has a large number of models, and for artistry it’s enough to remember about 90 / 2.8 macro portraiture with a very nice picture.

      • zengarden

I completely agree; I just voiced my little experience.

      • Vyunenko Andrey

If you believe this plate, http: //www.tamron.jp/en/product/discontinued.html, this lens was supposedly produced until 2010. !!! Something is hard to believe.

  • sn797

    177D. D like a diesel :)

  • Igor

Thanks. even simple lenses can get a good result.

  • Andrei

    And really a gag.

    I have a Tamron 177d under Canon.
This is how the whale should be in focal lengths and aperture.
Satisfied. When I do not want to carry the long heavy pins of my zooms with a constant aperture or stub, I take it.
In fact, it resembles a whale, but much better in my opinion. on whale 18-55, here 28-80.
I personally rarely used 18mm in those whale times, but 55mm was not enough. here at 80mm aperture like a whale at 55mm.
Allows you to shoot both relatively wide-angle landscapes, and a random portrait at 80mm / f5.6 with a tolerable background blur.
Autofocus is fast and good on my copy. Took a little more expensive than the typical price of a typical canon whale, and it turned out to be more useful than I expected.
By the way, it gives a very decent picture at 50mm. The only thing that the MDF would be smaller for him - 0.7 meters too much, with its something focal. Macro is practically excluded.

Do not fall for this article. I didn’t have a worse lens. This tamron has no advantages. No low price justifies. I read this site, but with this article it does not count and, as it were, a minus. The same old cheap c film sigma is superior to it. And it is made in China. Didn't appreciate your zen. Do not get fooled again.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Actually, and what is not to be done here?

  • Evgeny

Look prejudiced at examples. Soap dish also takes off, and you praise, mislead people.

    • Arkady Shapoval

I can not find where I praise him. On the contrary, literally from the review

Of course, I will not recommend this lens to anyone.

      и

Just an old staffer without unnecessary frills.

I think you messed up something

  • Evgeny

In general, for the site, of course, many thanks! Informatively! Almost the best.

  • Denis

I had Ramron 55-200, I really liked (broke) the picture was close to Helios, there was air, such a lamp pattern. I bought this one, but the picture is somehow gray or something. And so quite yourself, now for 500 UAH you can buy.

  • S.Ts.

I own such a Tamron under Pentax. Very nice lens. Sharp enough. At 80 mm / 5.6 you can shoot, at 28 / 3.5 too. All of the above applies to crop 10-16 megapixels.

The only drawback is that all Pentax carcasses tend to back focus with this lens at a wide angle (at focal points over 35 mm everything is clear, and at 28 mm back focus).

  • Azake

there is one in the package. After buying a full-frame camera, you can use it, but when there is an elka, something scrapes me a little. all the same I will try to play with it. you can not like it, you can change it to something else.

  • Sergei

Arkady, tell me, will Tamron 80-28 be focused for Nikon F-80?

  • Sergei

Arkady, tell me, will the tamron 80-28 focus on the F-80 (film) ___?

    • B. R. P.

Quote from the very beginning of the review: “Tamron 28-80 / 3.5-5.6 is a compact universal zoom lens for film cameras. Can serve as an alternative to the original budget Nikon AF Nikkor 28-80mm 1: 3.5-5.6D (MKI / II).” But just in case - it will be, it is for film cameras initially.
