Assembly

Quantaray 28-90mm / 3.5-5.6 is almost all made of plastic but with a metal bayonet mount. The retractable body frame (trunk) consists of one section. The zoom ring is rubberized, while the focus and aperture rings are plastic. The zoom ring rotates 90 degrees. When the focal length is changed, the lens trunk moves in waves. The lens takes its minimum dimensions at 50 mm focal length and when focusing at infinity.

Quantaray 28-90mm / 3.5-5.6 can use a plastic hood, which is fixed in special grooves located on the focus ring. When changing the focal length, the hood does not move with the movable frame of the case. As a result, neither during focusing nor during zooming resizing of the lens with the lens hood installed does not occur. A trifle, but nice. During focusing, the lens hood rotates with the focus ring. The hood can be installed in the opposite direction for transportation.

When changing the focal length, the rear lens moves in the middle of the lens body like a pump - it draws in and pushes out air. This behavior of the rear lens is called 'vacuum cleaner effect', which can increase the amount of dust that accumulates in the camera.

The lens does not suffer from spontaneous extension of the trunk.

Устройство aperture consists of 9petalswhich is very good for a lens of this class.

Focusing

Auto Focus Speed - high. The lens travel time of 28 mm focal length from infinity and back is the same as that of a super lens Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm 1: 2.8EN ED Nano Crystal Coat SWM IF Aspherical VR. Focusing speed slightly depends on the focal length. The maximum speed is available at 28 mm and decreases slightly with increasing focal length.

During focusing, the front lens and the frame for filters spin and drive forward. When changing the focal length, the front lens does not rotate.

The focus ring is wide and comfortable enough. The focus ring rotates only 30 degrees (the smallest move I've met). Most likely, a high focusing speed is associated with a small stroke of the focus ring. The ring travel is smooth, but has huge backlash.

The minimum focusing distance is 47 cm.

When used on a camera Nikon D90 (with unpretentious Multi-CAM 1000 focusing system) Quantaray 28-90mm / 3.5-5.6 behaves strangely, back focus was noticed at some focal lengths. In terms of accuracy and focus tenacity, the Quantaray 28-90mm / 3.5-5.6 combined with Nikon D90 turned out to be a bit problematic.

It's important: auto focus with this lens is available only when using him on cameras with built-in motor focusing.

Only auto focus and sound confirmation of focus will not work with these cameras, all other important functions, such as automatic exposure metering and automatic iris control, will work well.

Focus Features:

  1. Quantaray 28-90mm / 3.5-5.6 does not have a focus mode switch. To translate the lens into manual focus on cameras with motor For focusing, use the focus mode switching lever located near the camera mount. For cameras without motor Only manual focus mode will always be available for focusing.
  2. During focusing, the focus ring rotates and must not be touched.
  3. Focus speed may vary slightly from the camera used. This issue has been considered. here.
  4. During focusing, the lens and camera are quite noisy.
  5. There is a small effect of 'Focus Breathing' (changing the viewing angle during focusing).
  6. Quantaray 28-90mm / 3.5-5.6 is a third-party lens. It may happen that it will not work correctly with some Nikon cameras. Details on this issue are considered by me. here.
  7. When changing the focal length, focusing is lost.
  8. Quantaray 28-90mm / 3.5-5.6 has no focus problems in Live View (tested on Nikon D90).
  9. Unknown compatibility with teleconverters.
  10. Quantaray 28-90mm / 3.5-5.6 does not have hard stop (hard infinity mechanical stop) which allows you to accurately and quickly focus the lens at infinity under any external conditions.
  11. There is a depth of field scale (curves) for 28, 50 and 90 mm and F / 8, 16, 22 values. A mark (curve) for working in the infrared spectrum for the entire range of focal lengths.
  12. The direction of rotation of the focus ring does not match the original Nikon AF Nikkor 28-80mm 1: 3.5-5.6D (MKII).
  13. The lens has a manual aperture ring. To be able to control the value aperture from camera or for automatic installation aperture on modern central control valves, you need to turn the control ring to the F / 22 value and fix it with the switch located to the right of the aperture marks. If this is not done, then on a number of cameras, the display will display an error - 'fEE' (ring is not installed aperture) Some cameras having diaphragm rheostatallow you to control the aperture using the ring aperturebut only in metering modes exposure 'M' and 'A'. You can read more about this issue in the section on Non-G Lenses. Ring aperture rotates with clicks, the values F / 3.5, 5.6, 8, 11, 16, 22 are plotted on it; set an intermediate value between pairs of numbers using the ring aperture impossible (except for one intermediate between 3.5 and 5.6). Intermediate values can only be set using the camera menu.

Please note that in EXIF Photos at 90 mm focal length shows a value of 92 mm. This is most likely due to the programming method of the microprocessor of the lens.

My experience

The Quantaray 28-90mm / 3.5-5.6 is that rare case when I failed to make friends with the lens.

Quantaray 28-90mm / 3.5-5.6 is a super cheap solution for simple tasks. But it's still much better to look for original similar lenses. Nikon AF Nikkor 28-80mm 1: 3.3-5.6G (MKIII) и Nikon AF Nikkor 28-80mm 1: 3.5-5.6D (MKII) or Nikon 28-100mm 1: 3.5-5.6G AF Nikkor.

Results

The Quantaray 28-90mm / 3.5-5.6 is an old man with fast focusing, 9-blade diaphragm and a hood that masks external changes in the lens size during focusing and / or zooming. Focus ring travel is very small. By itself, it is a lightweight, pleasant to handle and undemanding lens. Optically weak.

Thanks. True, I only noticed one interesting feature ... And you write about a couple :)

    • Zed

Probably very fast focusing and 9 aperture blades.
      *
And of the minuses that Arkady did not explicitly indicate - soapy, back focus (which is strange for a screwdriver), and suffers from spherical aberrations.

      • Arkady Shapoval

He indicated in general that he was optically weak, he did not want to paint the details.
Most likely problems with focus, since the rotation of the ring is very small, i.e. greater sensitivity to the slightest turn of the screwdriver.
Yes, focusing is very fast and 9 blades for this glass is an excellent indicator.

    Thanks for the review, Arkady!
    As always interesting to read!

  • Victor

Arkady, you somehow often began to use the phrase “optically weak”. Explain, please, what exactly does this mean? Are the aberrations climbing? Do you need to tighten the diaphragm to be more or less sharp? Or something else?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Yes, all of the above. Ultimately, getting a good picture out of it is difficult.

  • Andrei

    Optically weak)) Nothing to add.
