MINOLTA MD ROKKOR 50mm 1: 1.2

Hello dear amateur photographers. My name is Aleksey Ovoshchnikov and I present to your attention a brief overview on an interesting super-fast lens Minolta MD Rokkor 50 mm f / 1.2.

The lens allows you to take pictures and shoot videos at f 1.2, that is, it lets in a lot of light. You can take very interesting photos with strong background blur.

The sharpness zone is very thin and you can shoot a portrait by washing out not only the background, but also objects located closer to the portrait.

I want to add right away that it’s not at all easy to control this very sharpness zone on f 1.2, especially if your subject is not standing still.

I filmed dancing people two meters away from me, and it turned out that it was a matter of great skill or luck to fit both into the sharpness zone! Of course, the lens does not have automatic focusing and you have to turn the focusing ring, besides this ring is not so smooth. The lens, as you can see in the photo, is in excellent condition and was probably a bit tight initially. The focusing ring rotates from 45 cm to infinity by 180 degrees. Between half a meter and a meter, you have all 90 degrees of revolution of the ring - and this is just one human step. Personally, it was not very convenient for me to shoot something dynamic with this lens. Although not built for such dynamics.

The lens has normal sharpness at full aperture. Becomes sharper on F2. By the way, this lens has no middle position between F1.2 and F2. However, the aperture change ring does not rotate with clear clicks, but smoothly, with the ability to leave the aperture between F1.2 and F2, that is, you can put F1.4 and F1.8 on the eye.

MINOLTA MD ROKKOR 50mm 1: 1.2

MINOLTA MD ROKKOR 50mm 1: 1.2

If the camera has automatic exposure metering, then it will select the settings for these intermediate, hand-to-eye positions. I tested this on my Sony A7 camera. Metering works great with this fully manual lens on this camera. So, for example, if in mode A the camera offers 1/1000 s. for position f1.2, when soft closing to F2, the camera passes two intermediate positions 1/800 s. for f1.4 and 1/640 s. for f1.8 respectively.

I managed to shoot on this lens and portraits and landscapes that you can see in the photo. Special thanks to Arkady for choosing the best pictures from those that I sent him.

The lens forms a good image, both for a full frame and for a crop (some photos were taken on Sony NEX 3N).

I have good impressions with the Rokkor 50 mm f 1.2. I have never used a lens with this aperture, and compare on the forehead with nothing. If there is anything else with aperture f1.2, then I will try to show sets of photos.

I want to add that the lens cannot be used normally on cameras of the popular SLR systems Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Olympus (the working distance does not fit).

Of course, you can buy a simple Chinese adapter for Canon (I did so until I had a Sony a7 camera), but you will not have infinity. On a full frame at the maximum focusing distance, you can shoot only a very large portrait of a small child, but you can easily shoot macro.

This lens finds a second life on mirrorless cameras such as Sony Alpha, Samsung NX and so on.

1.2 is not working at all, or the author has never been in focus.

    • Valentine

He got into focus. And what did you think that a similar lens with a fully open 1,2 will have razor sharpness?

      • anonym

Let not "razor", but at least some, no, not any

        • Valentine

I don't know how you judge the sharpness, but the sharpness for this lens and for the open aperture is very good. Moreover, the author clearly presented the photographs without processing, i.e. their quality can be significantly improved - both in terms of sharpness, and in terms of contrast, and in terms of color. Therefore, I quite liked the lens. Yes, the same Nikon 50mm 1.4D - believe me, on the open 1.4 it also soft to the full ... and nothing, they work with it. And I also got used to it after some time and I know exactly when to open to 1.4, and when to tighten.

        • atypical Kiev

I thought about it too - almost no sharp photos.
Although shooting with 1,2 is probably wildly difficult. At most 1.8 lens is in use

          • Valentine

Look at the details. How can we say that a person did not fall into focus or that the lens is not sharp at all, if, for example, the structure of the clothing fabric is very clearly visible?

            • Valentine

Balance for my taste + slight gain. 3, well, 5 minutes from the strength, if you eliminate the glare on the face from the screen of the cell.

            • Valentine

              It was

            • Rodion

Sometimes the spherical shows itself in such a way that the details seem to be visible, but the picture seems to be taken through a bag. This happens when up to a certain frequency contrast transmission is normal, and then abruptly goes "to zero".
In general, normal photos, given the lack of processing.

  • Igor

The color of the girl in the last photo is somehow strange. Something with BB?

  • Vladimir

GORGEOUS lens with a twist ...!
It is very interesting to "twist" it ...
    White-listed for purchase.
    Thanks ! ;)

    • Arkady Shapoval

I would use the word 'chic' exclusively for the Minolta MC Rokkor 58 mm f / 1.2

  • Ilyas

    thanks, but 1.2 sad (

  • anonym

This lens is wonderful, but the cards presented from it, if not so soft.

  • Ivan

A lot of pictures but little really useful information ... History of bayonet circuitry main characteristics of photography at working apertures - where is it all? The objects clearly deserve more than a superficial brushstroke. Weak ...

  • andrey.ali

I love when there are portraits in the reviews. Skin tone some kind of "deadly" to say the least =)

    • Valentine

It's good that the photos are not processed. Another would be an archive, but with ravchiks - it would be generally super. Why would you look at a photo with processing? The more the photo has been processed, the less you can judge the properties of the lens itself. Well, the author would correct the balance, increase the contrast, bring sharpness, add saturation to the colors, polish the skin - the photos would be better, but where to look for the credit of the lens?

      • andrey.ali

I do not bother myself, I simply state a fact.

      • Arkady Shapoval

Here here 280 photos from him on different apertures.

        • Valentine

          Thank you!

I see some critics here ... Good article, many illustrative examples. And if someone has a complaint - you take it and write better. I only doubt that you can do it at all ... But I need to develop it.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Alexey, the author of the article, wants to write a couple more reviews about interesting lenses with great enthusiasm. And I also forgot to add videos shot on this lens.

  • zengarden

Aperture for the sake of aperture. For "art" portraits or shooting in the dark.
To shoot on such landscapes / street - to put it mildly, not really.
And so, in the open, it shoots somewhere at the level of Chinese aperture glass for a CCTV camera (only there is a different effect across the field).
Surely on aperture 2 and above, it will show itself much better, but there are no examples.
Nevertheless, this lens is intended for other subjects. Try shooting portraits in b / w, for example.

    • Valentine

Arkady gave a link to the archive with frames. There is an example of a chain on different diaphragms. It is clearly seen how sharpness and bokeh changes with the aperture cover. By shutter speed, you can understand how closed the aperture is.

    • Michael

“Shoot in such landscapes / street” - I think landscapes and streets just for example of depth of field and blur. Naturally, no one takes pictures of 1,2 landscapes or architecture. For test only
“Shoot portraits on it in b / w” - the white balance is corrected, color correction for serious work is done almost always

    • Rodion

Yes, there is a feeling that the bright Rokkors shoot everything in the open “tortured”. The lens is very, very weak along the edge, and does not cause delight in the center either. Indeed - apart from portraits, there is nothing special to photograph.

  • anonym

And why is it possible on a Sony, but not on an Olympus - too, after all, a mirrorless?

    • Valentine

The working distance is 43,5 mm, so there is no way for DSLRs, but for almost any mirrorless, including Olympus, you can - only an adapter is needed. The name of the adapter will be something like MD-M4 / 3 (MD bayonet - micro 4/3 bayonet).

      • Ilya

        And you can use SLRs.
I received an MD-PK lens adapter yesterday.

        • Dima

For DSLRs, adapters with lenses, since the focal length of DSLRs is longer and the work has to be corrected optically. For a lens with such an ambiguous picture, set the additional value at 1,2. lenses are a risky business. What this lens will bring to the operation of the lens, in each case must be looked at separately.

  • Koba

Indeed, an incomplete review - both on the technical side (it was possible to collect information from the Internet!), And on the artistic side (shoot at various apertures and indicate them, as well as submit at least a few RAW files to check what was said and deeper processing of the material). I also think that this lens is primarily taken because of the peculiar bokeh, and not because of some kind of razor sharpness at aperture 1.2 (remember, Bresson said that bokeh is a “bourgeois prejudice”, and he was right about that!) , so it would be desirable to take a small series of test shots at all apertures so that we know where the softness of the picture with the characteristic bokeh ends, and where the sharpness begins, which should be present for a lens of this class. Minolta was an engineering company and made its own lenses, even collaborated with Leica at one time and made excellent cameras and lenses, which is why a lens of this class clearly deserves a deeper view. I mean that the author can simply expand this review and supplement it with photographs, because nothing prevents it.

    • Valentine

They gave you a link to the archive with the sources. There are 280 test photos, of which everything is extremely clear. The author shows both bokeh, and sharpness at different apertures, and work in side and backlight, and different types and distances of shooting. Looking at the archivist in general, you can build a clear idea of the nature of the picture of this lens. Technical information, which, as you correctly noted, can be viewed on the Internet, is it more important than how the lens actually shows itself? In general, many thanks to the person for taking the time and sharing the experience of using the lens. More such articles.

      • anonym

Photo review from the lens is no good, many did not understand how good it is. And it (the lens) is good, gentlemen!

        • Michael

Now we are waiting for an overview of this lens from you. Let's show how to write reviews correctly.

          • anonym

Do not foam. I talked about the photo from him.

            • Igor

Can you see your photos from him (you write that the lens is good)?

              • anonym

The fact that he is cool knows every little bit ascribing himself to the photographers.

              • Igor

Anonymous, some empty words, and still write to others “do not sing” ...

              • anonym

                Feel better?

  • Andrei

Why do we need 1,2 if the soap is open and the DOF is so thin that everything is out of focus.
It's better to have an honest 2,0.

    • Michael

Just 1,2 for such a narrow depth of field and need. It is understood that the scope of 1,2 is very limited. And then everyone decides for himself what it is: a full soap or a very soft drawing. With 2,0 in Photoshop, the effect of such a picture will not do. 99% of users do not need this lens. 1% already knows what to do with it.

  • Alexander

Not bad, the figure is similar to 50 1,2 Ais, but this one is optically weaker. Well, 6 petals, this is not 9.

  • Hector

For diaphragms 1,2 - about, active yes big-mensh will decent the picture.
The quality of the spheres of enlightenment is not attributable to the occasional vimog.

About the Act of the clergy attached to the feathers for zyomka chornobіlikh photo, view of the explanation and Rostov portets.

    • Ilyas

“For aperture of 1,2 - oh, the lens gives a more or less decent picture.
The quality of multilayer enlightenment does NOT meet modern requirements.

Oh, the lens is suitable in the First Stage for shooting black photos, in particular, it explained the growth of the port. "
Did you mean this? It’s interesting to read your comment, but alas, the language barrier does not allow me to

    • Michael

And Helios, too, only shoot b / w portraits? Not the worst Helios 81H on F 1: 2 gives far not the best color rendition, especially in a difficult light. And after shooting on more modern Nikon 50mm f / 1.8D AF Nikkor and Nikon 50mm f / 1.4D AF Nikkor at open, colors also often leave the original ones. Enlightenment and optics Nikon 50mm f / 1.8G AF-S Nikkor and Nikon 50mm f / 1.8G AF-S Nikkor are better, with them the picture on the open is better.

  • Alexey Shch

And where sobsno review? Sounds like a common opinion

  • Artem

The lens may be excellent, but the color in the photos presented is just quiet horror. Sorry I could not restrain myself.

  • Alexey (author of the review)

Hello, dear readers of Radozhiva, I am pleasantly surprised by the number of various comments. I am glad that the information so quickly found its users and the article was read many times. I agree with many comments and try to improve the quality of the information provided. I will be more diligent in the presentation of the material and the selection of photographs. I want to once again thank Arkady for the opportunity to publish a review on this wonderful site. I’ll edit the review a bit and ask Arkady to submit some of my photos both as shot and with processing. Here ALL is untreated. Convert to JPEG from RAW. I totally agree that the colors are bad. Not always the correct white balance. But this shows you how the Sony A7 camera works with manual optics)) But this is an overview of the lens, not the photo editor. The sharpness of the lens is quite normal for F1.2. For comparison, I’ll upload two shots for comment here.
On the left, this lens is paired with a Canon 5D (first version) - On the right is a Canon EF 24 mm f / 1.4 L II USM lens (at f 1.4) paired with a Canon 5D (first version)

Once again, I apologize for the flaws and, as we say in France, beautiful photos!

    • Artur

Good review. A good lens, I’ve been shooting with it for a couple of years, for several months I learned to catch sharpness in the open, especially in motion, so this is a matter of practice) Very compact and lightweight, especially compared to 58 / 1.2). It is convenient to work when the flash is a burden. I rarely use open, it is soft for my taste (and this is just a given of the lens, because it was made in the digital era and is designed for analog use), with f2 everything is just fine.

  • Alexey (author of the review)

    And with the coming!

    • TSerg (Sergiy)

      Shanovny p. Oleksiyu!
Your look around to take revenge on shortcomings. Not without it. Ale z Vi tilki mend your writing, look around. Dosvid - good luck. For any you need to say - dyakuyu! It is not a skinny commentator who can write it. Seeing that you haven’t yet had enough proof with manual optics, like mine.
I wanted to do it, but V is wrong about the fact that the object cannot be attached to Canon, Nikon, Pentax. It is possible, albeit not through the transition, but behind the help of turning and slussing robots. Winning to transplant successfully and with a bezkintsem. I transplanted the decilka of such objects to Kenon without a break, incl. і FF. On the vidminu view of your relative with a focal point 58, you should not go with a bezkintz.
First of all, it’s easy to navigate at aperture 1.2. True, it was transplanted from the work of the working camera or through the exact adapter. The sharpness at f 1.2 will not be razor-sharp, it is more necessary to hit it accurately, to finish it smoothly with such depth of field, as at a certain object. I need some reason, as there is that depth of field at such a slope. It was just that on the butts it was necessary to show one and the same plot close to the average plan at f 1.2, 2 and 2,8 (in the same place, as I remember, there is no way of repeating between the meanings) and more clearly. And landscapes on 1,2 and on 2 do not know.
Kolori vin troshki to spoil i on Kenonі. Especially with piece svіtlі vіd rіznikh dzherel. But it’s easy to edit the editor, especially to thoroughly study at RAV_.

  • Alexey (author of the review)

Thank you, Sergiy, that I only know another ric and my first look at the object. Obviously good, the sharpness may be good, to say that it is necessary to complete the description and I will try to keep it. I know about the overcrowding of objects for the method you describe in hair, but I don’t think so much. There de I live tse bude will be very expensive))) I will send Arcadia archives with RAV files and there you can know the difference and intelligence as the bullet closed the diaphragm of the bachachi camera settings and the zone of large size. Thank you for the comment. You can write on two movs, vikoristovuyu online translations google translate. It’s douchey.

Thank you, Sergey, yes, I’m only shooting the second year and this is my first review on the lens. The lens is good, sharpness is also good, tell me what needs to be added from the description and I will try to do it. I know about the alteration of lenses according to the method you described in the trailer, but I do not have such an opportunity. Where I live, it will cost more than this lens))) Today I will send Arkady an archive with RAV files and everyone will be able to find the sharpness and understand how the aperture was closed by seeing the camera settings and the sharpness zone large. Thanks for the comment. You can write in two languages, using the online translator google translate. Very comfortably.

  • Andrey

softit on the open also and how, the effect of monocle even reminds on landscapes
Nikkor 50 1,2 is much sharper, and I took landscapes with f2, I have never seen such sharpness in my d300, on f1,2 I easily got into the room on switches or other objects on the shelves, although the flu is also very small
I think with f2 it is completely working for portraits

  • Georgy

I looked at the pictures - in conjunction with the full-frame Sony, of course, not really. My opinion: put it on 4/3, where the EGF will be 100 mm - just right for a portrait. Weak edges will go away due to a smaller matrix, with F 1: 1.2 it is easier to work, since at 3 meters DOF in the region of 10 centimeters will be, it will be easier to get into focus. The colors will still need to be edited and sharpened. The lens is good for its time, now it is overrated.

Added 20 new photos. I wish everyone a New Year mood!

On the Canon EF, it is sawn without question and normally used with infinity. On the FF, the mirror does not catch. Sound half-speed, if the manual does not bother.

Who cares, here you can read my review about this lens: https://chubaduba.github.io/posts/2018-03-29-1.html

    • Ivan

ChubaDuba, well done! Your pictures will make it much better for those who want to buy this lens to understand what can be obtained from it than the pictures of the author. I have a Takumar SMC 50 / 1.4, I am very pleased with it.
