A review of a homemade 50 / 3.5 achromat lens from gluing a Zenith-TTL viewfinder from a reader of Radozhiva

An unusual review specifically for Radozhiva, prepared Rodion Eshmakov.

Achromat lens is a type of lens in which spherical and chromatic aberration are corrected in the absence of correction of distortions of inclined beams - coma, astigmatism. Achromats are one of the simplest schemes, they are widely used as technical lenses - especially in observation instruments, microscopes, etc. For example, achromatic lenses are the lenses of most binoculars, and achromatic telescopes are widely popular due to their low cost and acceptable quality.

Schematic diagram of the achromatic lens

Schematic diagram of the achromatic lens

Among the photo lenses, only old small format super telephoto lenses with a focal length of more than 500 mm are represented by achromats. But in modern times, such a scheme is used only in creative lenses like Lensbabywhere the lens aberration is used as the effect.

Achromat production from the Zenith camera viewfinder

Cameras like "Zenith" are very common at the present time, including and inoperative. In the vast majority of cases, they are of no interest either to collectors or to amateur photographers. However, it turned out that from Zenit cameras you can get not only a lot of screws, a scratched mirror and a piece of plastic with a micro-raster - a single gluing, which serves as the eyepiece of the video finder, is of interest. The focal length of this gluing is approximately 50 mm, it is achromatic, because scheme JVI no longer contains other lenses (in contrast, for example, from gluing lenses of Industar - it is part of the optical scheme and is not an achromat). The relative hole for gluing from the Zenith-TTL visor is approximately F / 2.8-F / 3.5 (since the exact FR has not been measured). Those. there is the possibility of manufacturing a “creative” lens with parameters convenient for shooting (unlike achromatic lenses from glued binoculars, etc.).

By removing the top cover of the camera, you can access the lens of the viewfinder and unscrew it. A significant disadvantage is that the lens itself is rolled into a frame, which limits its light diameter. Therefore, it is necessary to carefully cut the frame and remove the lens.

The lens seems very similar in size to Industar-50 lenses, which makes it tempting to use the body of this common lens as a donor for a helicoid and diaphragm. But - you can culturally install a lens if you previously install it in the front lens block I-50. The main difficulties that arise in this are the presence of a negative lens rolled into it by Industar and a larger bonding diameter JVI Zenith The file does its job. The main thing is to do it carefully and wisely, or it is not possible to disturb the alignment.

It is interesting that the thread of the mount of the sighting device to the camera is completely identical to the thread of the rear lens unit of a conventional Industar-50. That is, “hacky” achromat can be made without any tool at all - by removing lenses from the I-50 and inserting achromatic gluing into its body. Why "hacky"? - Because the diaphragm will be installed then in front, and the angle of view is limited by the frame of the front lens block. In addition, you will have to adjust the back section of the rings.

After refinement of the front lens-block of Industar-50, gluing-achromat is easily fixed in it, and you can use the native retaining ring of the front lens-block.

Next, you just need to set the working segment with adjustment rings, and you can find the infinity exactly if you unscrew the front lens block with achromatic gluing, and then fix it with a small drop of cyanoacrylate in the right position.

As a result, we get 50 / 3.5 achromat in the Industar-50 case - the construct is completely identical to it.

Optical properties of achromat 50 / 3.5 from the eyepiece of the OVI camera Zenit

In fact, it is difficult to call this gluing achromat (binocular lenses are much better in quality) when looking at the pictures: both chromatism and spherical aberration are very poorly correlated - software to a greater extent can only be leveled at F / 5.6 and beyond. Although in comparison with a monocle with the same parameters, this lens looks really good.

Picture on the "portrait" distance at F / 5.6

Due to the curvature of the field, the edges always turn out blurry, in addition, field aberrations always reign there and there is no sharpness there on F / 16. On the APS-C frame format, only 1 / 4-1 / 3 of the center area of the frame is sharp with an aperture of F / 3.5 to F / 11. By the way, this distribution of sharpness over the frame is the main artistic property of the lens: blurring the edges allows you to focus on the central object and, in addition, create the effect of a quick movement towards it. It's funny, but the blurring of the pre-focus zone is remotely similar to the Helios bokeh - it is also very twisted.

Reflection with glass (prefocal blur picture created by droplets on glass), F / 3.5

Reflection with glass (prefocal blur picture created by droplets on glass), F / 3.5

Achromatic gluing has no enlightenment, the contrast is satisfactory. Color reproduction is natural, but the broadband secondary spectrum on F / 3.5 tends to distort it somewhat. Apparently, in an open aperture, the lens should be used in monochrome shooting mode.

To summarize - we should not talk about the optical quality of this lens. Its merits are its shortcomings. And vice versa.

Conclusions

Gluing eyepiece from JVI Zenith cameras are a very affordable and convenient material for making your own analogue of Lensbaby. The result obtained is more than enough for any "creative" ideas. There is no optical quality - the lens is not suitable for normal shooting.

Real tin and hardcore. There would never be enough imagination for this. Thanks to the author for a non-standard review. It was interesting.

    Pornography)
    # Rodion in your style

  • Michael R.

And not what and not "pornography",
but a very interesting and peculiar artistic effect!
    Thanks to the author, definitely.

  • Rodion

    Thirtieth anniversary, by the way.

    • anonym

And in the early “Zeniths” the viewfinder eyepiece, for example, is enlightened ... (For example, in “Zenit-3M”) Maybe the final result will be more interesting with it?

There was no review of the bottom of the bottle and the door peephole

    • anonym

There was a review of the door peephole a few years ago.

    • Andrei

Rodion is certainly well done, a real Etuziast! Respect! but the resource is degrading ... More has been written about this crap than about the Sony M9 ... but nothing about the D850 ...

      • zengarden

Leave Arcadia to test Nikon D850, and there will be a review :)

      • Oleg

Sony A9, this is Leica m9, by the way, nothing is written about it here either. Just say this: the people have a technique that is not in the reviews, but too lazy to write for yourself. Everyone is waiting for Arkady to write

    • Rodion

Yes, I wanted to fulfill this desire of yours - but only at the bottom the optical power is negative, and at the pupil - zero. :)

  • Dmitriy

There was no review of the bottom of the bottle! I demand!
And do not forget the peephole door!

    • zengarden

Actually there is already; just not about the bottoms, but about the tin can.
And a diaphragm in the form of a door peephole. Look for it.

  • zengarden

An interesting thing. The curvature of the field resembles CCTV C-mount lenses - only those in the center have good sharpness, and to the edges they go out of focus; on some subjects, you can get an effect reminiscent of tild-shift and “cinematic” picture.

Here is the Fujian 35mm f1.6

    • zengarden

      More Fujian 35mm f1.6

  • Alexey

To the original “Lensbaby” remnants of the USSR as to the moon on a scooter.
The adequacy bar should be lowered. I suggest Rodion in the next review to try to remove something on a glass bottle. You can play with the color of the bottles to achieve filter effects.

Jora, you still reminded me of an old Jewish joke.
A young Orthodox Jew goes on vacation at sea. He comes to the rabbi and asks:
      - Rebbe, there are many temptations at the resort - restaurants, cinemas, beautiful women ... can I watch this, or is it better to close my eyes?
      - Yes, you can. - the rabbi answers.
“Rebbe, I’m going to the sea, but there are many almost naked women on the beach, can I look at them?”
      - Can. - the rabbi answers.
“Rebbe, is there anything the Jew cannot look at?”
      - Yes. For example, electric welding.

I understand you correctly, you say that you personally like the hole of the user Oleksandr? Compared to what?

          • Simon

No, not right, your exquisite mind lets you down ... and probably often.

            • Onotole

Well, what did you mean then?

My refined mind cannot interpret the phrase differently. Help, I'm really interested.

  • Michael R.

And why torture 5D for such…. pictures,
    well, upload them ...

    • Rodion

      For fun, obviously :)
Camera obscura is a theme. The most important stage in the development of photography is this.

      • Oleksandr

... and I like Rodion's impenetrable optimism! No matter how much he was trolled, but he himself is positive! I respect them. Although he is engaged in nonsense, but to himself in joy! Well, good health! )))

        • Rodion

Believe it or not - this "nonsense" was made to order. Precisely as a creative lens. But in this respect, she shows herself perfectly. It became interesting to me myself, and I acquired blanks for new achromats, already of better quality from a technical point of view.

        • Oleg

What battles turn around his crafts

    • Simon

What does torture mean? You understand that the thread in the photo image ... compare and draw conclusions.

      • Onotole

Torment - in this case means wasting the resource of the shutter in vain.
Taking pictures with the lens cap on would be more useful.

        • Simon

It is not the mind that speaks in you ... but something else ...

        • Dim

To live not your life, but the life of, for example, Bryulov is more interesting and what's next? What is the conclusion from this? Do you need to stop flipping your shutter? So?

          • Onotole

            Wrong.
That's right - this is not trying to write like “you all do not understand anything here,” in response to a reasonable remark that you are doing, to put it mildly, nonsense.

            • Dim

Could there be a problem on your side? Not? Is such an assumption not considered? It is certainly wonderful that you personally are engaged in extremely important matters and it is possible that you are alone in the whole world.

              • Onotole

No, I do far from overly important matters, and this correspondence is confirmation of this.
The fundamental difference is that I am well aware of this. The author of Simon began by giving instructions here to whom and how to shoot, they say he alone knows how to do it right, I just answered in his own style, what's the problem?
And your, Dim, repeated attempts to translate the subject of discussion into my personality - look at least awkward and even funny.

              • dragon yes not snape

In fact, Simon just wanted to be praised for his creativity. But in fact he was laughed at by Luli. This also happens, all the more so since Simon has evaded a frank accordion and even off topic.

              • Peter Sh.

                I hope he realized everything.
It’s all simple, don’t say that everything’s supposedly garbage to you, but I’m looking the coolest and everyone will appreciate it and may even praise it.

This is me so nets. Lightroom makes me sick again, every day, I look at him for hours. Especially when you don't like your pictures. I took the wrong lens, damn what happened ... Yo-mine.

  • Simon

A high-quality monocle, gives the same blur throughout the field, the picture is soft, pleasant and not some kind of daub ...
    Here's an example:

    • Vania

It is completely incomprehensible to me what you mean. Rodion's pictures from the review are not much better than what you post. Not without drawbacks, of course, but if Rodion's pictures show that the lens can be somehow used, at least something to get, then yours - that your devices are absolutely inapplicable for anything.
Well, from the amount of sharpe and noise in the pictures from the pinhole, my eyes just fall out.

    • anonym

I was making a monocle. Quickly ... The quality of the footage was better. Did not like…

  • Aries

and you can build something like that from the lenses of a photographic enlarger ... industrial 50u and so on?

    • Rodion

Unfortunately, nothing sensible will come of them: the component glued in it is far from achromat. The only thing is, if they shoot "backwards", then the field will be uneven and, most likely, some semblance of this effect will be achieved.

Time spent without benefit. A lesson at the level of a Soviet school photo mug. A result of the same level.

          • Onotole

You are talking about a Soviet school photo circle as if it were something bad.

            • First Substation

If this was done in a photo mug, it would be a very cool photo mug

            • anonym

Not bad, but simple! For children! ... In a cool Soviet circle, the main emphasis was on shooting (light, composition, perspective ... ...), and not on tinkering with old lenses. What is Rodion trying to achieve? Invents something new? I assure you that at this level, everything has long been invented. Well, nothing good will come out of the doorway ……. As there at the end of the review, there is no optical quality - the lens is not suitable for ordinary filming. Well, why would a goat accordion?

              • Onotole

I am surprised with you - why such inert and black-and-white thinking?
For ordinary shooting, the lens is not suitable - then everything is not needed?
                What about unusual filming, huh?
I can still name a lot of things that are completely unsuitable for ordinary filming, but for some reason people buy this everywhere and not for a little money: from macromech and IR filters to lensby and lenses with a focal length of 1000mm.
All this is applicable to “ordinary” photography, much less Rodion's achromat, and what - all this is not necessary in your opinion? Does the goat need a button accordion?

              • anonym

Unusual filming? “But for some reason people buy it everywhere and not for little money:" Amused the word EVERYBODY. You yourself will buy this achromat? That's it! ...

              • Onotole

Yes, unusual, different from the nagging patterns, but what's wrong with that?

It is unclear what amused you, well, you doubt that the items I listed are bought well, not like hot cakes of course, but hundreds and thousands around the world? Those. far from single copies.
Yes, I won’t buy achromat either, and I don’t need a macromech with a superbody. But this does not mean that EVERYONE is not needed.

Once again, my thought: do you personally need, for example, a pneumatic impact wrench? No? And he didn't give up to me for nothing, but this does not mean at all that he is not needed IN PRINCIPLE. Somewhere, for some reason, for some of their purposes, this thing is still needed, one might say - irreplaceable. And if these goals are not clear to YOU PERSONALLY, you should not argue that they do not exist at all.

              • anonym

A pneumatic wrench is a complete tool. And it is unnecessary to do it again from a sewing machine and a nail puller and write after that a review with this conclusion (directly from Rodion) - It practically does not fulfill its functions - it is not suitable for work.

              • Rodion

                But it was bought ...

Someone is interested in endless discussions about the optical properties of lenses, despite the fact that his camera has been lying around for years without much work. Someone comes here for help and the rest of the time takes pictures. Someone generally only is friends with photoshop. Rodion just found his niche, he is interested in what he does, but, Rodion, not every result is a result. Unfortunately, lately Arkady and Rodion are increasingly writing articles “about nothing”. No offense.

  • First Substation

After analyzing the comments, I want to give Rodion some tips:
    1. Get away from the despicable Soviet brands, do not embarrass the noble audience with Zenits and Industars, cut the carcasses of branded equipment and mount eyepieces in branded helicoids.
    2. Use technological equipment, no “knee”.
    3. Get a modern mirrorless camera with an electronic shutter, if you have the slightest doubt about the value of the frame - use only it. Save the life of a mechanical shutter for your most precious moments
    4. In case of failure to comply with paragraphs 1-3, at least keep statistics of burned-up seats from your experiences and periodically publish it here on the site.

I wish you creative success, Rodion.

  • Arkady Shapoval

Rodion's note received more comments than the much-praised Sonya a9 from my previous post :) Thanks to Rodion :)

  • Simon

To achieve the monocle effect today, you can take the avant-garde path. Take a Chinese poltinic or another not sharp one and put on a soft filter one or two and wake you up a modern uniform pseudo “Monocle” across the entire field

    • Onotole

      Very helpful opinion, thanks.

Take the trouble to explain how the monocle (or even its effect) relates to the topic of this article?
You do not know the difference between achromat and monocle?

      • Simon

Indeed, such a difference ... that would be uplifted by super knowledge ... The effect of blur is creativity, do not look for an achromat or a monocle, look for yourself in them. And if you are not there, take a standard photo and rejoice. Check out the monocle here: http://art.photo-element.ru/ts/kolosov-monocle/kolosov-monocle.html
About anachromats, which are one and so revealingly clear from Radion's article.

        • Simon

There is a typo above, only for God's sake do not cling, read how (Achromat)

        • Onotole

As expected, you do not see the difference ("the essence is one"), now your position and behavior have become more clear to me. I think the rest of the readers too.

          • Simon

Exposed! kapets me ... undress !!! :))))) I don’t understand anything at all and I don’t know ... :)))) What a shame !!! :)))))) How can I finally know something that only you know Onotole ... And now can you imagine? Everybody knows!

            • Simon

Why is there so much poison in you, sir ...

              • Onotole
