Impressions from Sony a9

According provided by camera Sony a9 (Sony ILCE-9)lens Sony FE 2.8 / 70-200 G GM OSS (SEL70200GM)handle extension Sony GP-X1EM and vertical handle VGC3EM.SYU Many thanks to the official representative of Sony in Ukraine.

Sony a9

Sony a9

The camera was provided to me for only a few days, so I did not prepare a detailed review of the Sony a9. In this note I will only say your impressions about Sony a9 and Sony FE 2.8 / 70-200 G GM OSS (SEL70200GM).

1. Collaboration with Sony

Sony always keeps in touch with me, informs about new releases, invites you to present its new products, and provides photographic equipment for reviews. Sometimes you can even choose a particular camera for review. I should pay attention that my reviews of Sony cameras and lenses in their text have a rather large block of criticism or shortcomings, for example, such as in the Sony a7R review, where I described in detail the lack of sane auto focus. At the same time, no one is pushing me from Sony to write another jeans article about photography. Representatives of Nikon and Canon on contact go much worse.

Actually, I think that the great resonance that Sony a9 received in the countries of the former CIS is primarily associated with the company's open and competent policy. The entire network is crammed with denim posts about the super 'killer' of DSLRs.

2. Expectations

I did not want to take the Sony a9 for review, I refused several times for various reasons (vacation, loading with the main shoots). Then the Sony a9 became just not interesting to me. Unfortunately, it is already very difficult to surprise me with good photographic equipment, and I am not the last one like many photographers. The release of a new hammer tool that can hammer 20 nails per second instead 14 nails at the hammers Canon 1DX MarkII и Nikon D5 I was not surprised at all.

3. A new paradigm?

In part, I didn't want to mess with the Sony a9 for fear of a new focusing paradigm. To retrain is difficult. After all the laudatory reviews for the complete automaticity in the recognition and tracking of subjects, I got the impression that now I will need to look differently for the best methods of working with the automatic focusing system. In practice, although everything is good enough, it is still impossible to completely trust the automation in difficult shooting conditions. The photographer's intentions often have to be manually conveyed to the camera. I hope that in the near future a neural interface will be created for focusing where the photographer wants.

Where does everything go and what will happen next? In a couple of years, cameras will be able to shoot 60 frames per second with a 100 MP sensor and with a 16-bit RAW. The process of shooting will turn into a video shooting format 8 or 16K. Instead of photographers they will walk and take pictures Robots. The profession of a photographer will turn into the work of a content manager who can only select the desired image from 100500 frames shot by various drones. Marty, the future is near.

4. Focus

Focusing works well, without any complaints. I was completely satisfied with the quality of the focus. But I did not find anything magical or radically new in Sony a9.

To mislead the camera is quite easy, it can lose the subject, not have time to focus or focus on the wrong object. Also, as I noted in the review Sony a6300 - speed, accuracy and focusing tenacity very much depends on the lens and shooting conditions.

5. What is really new at Sony a9?

For me, as a practicing photographer, there is nothing fundamentally new in Sony a9. What I'm really happy about is the appearance of a joystick in the Sony a9. Joystick! Joystick in 2017! Unfortunately, on previous full-frame mirrorless cameras Sony a7, a7II, a7S, a7SII, a7R, A7RII. it was extremely inconvenient to work because of the hellish implementation of focusing on one point (on a regular spot, as it is correctly called in the menu of these cameras). To shift the focus point, you should dance with a tambourine and sing special chants with a click on a large number of functional and not very functional buttons. With the Sony a9, you can just as easily choose a focus point as it was implemented in the first Nikon Central Control Units in 1999.

All other super-functions in the vast majority of cases will not be used by the photographer, their merits are too exaggerated and they can remain super-functions only on paper. Of the 'new' features, I still remember the absence of blackout during the release of the electronic shutter.

Without hesitation, I can confidently say that having vast experience communicating with various cameras, I can fully realize the potential of cameras no newer Nikon D80 / Canon 40D... Of course, usually the newer and more advanced the camera is, the easier and more enjoyable it is to work with it, but only a few can reveal the huge potential of Sony a9.

Sony a9

Sony a9

6. TOP or not TOP

The Sony a9 should be a serious player in the world of photography, but personally I don't consider the Sony a9 to be a TOP camera. One of the main reasons is the usual form factor of the Sony a9 case and terrible handling. So far, I believe that the Sony a9 is on the same level as the Nikon D850 / Canon 5D Mark IV.

At the same time as Sony a9, I had an old woman on the review Canon 300D (the very first camera with a bayonet mount Canon EF-S), in my hand this old and unusable device sat better than Sony a9.

I can confidently say that the Sony a9 loses a lot to the touch Canon 1DX MarkII и Nikon D5, This, most likely, applies to the stamina of these cameras. If I had a choice, then for serious and responsible work as a photographer in difficult conditions, I would rather use the time-tested combo-monsters of old generations (units from Canon / Nikon), rather than go with Sony a9.

To turn the Sony a9 into a camera with a TOP combo housing, all kinds of extenders-extensions like Sony GP-X1EM cost OVER 9000 money.

7. Overall Sony a9 experience

Sony a9 is a good camera. This is expected. I understand that this is very dry and boring - but with this I want to emphasize the excessive bloat of the Sony a9 functionality in the eyes of neophytes who want to change their Nikon D3100 / Canon 550D to something else. Professionals already understand what Sony a9 is and what it is eaten with.

The Sony a9 is often booted up as a DSLR killer. I completely agree that DSLRs will eventually be replaced by mirrorless solutions, but so far the Sony a9 is not a killer, but attempts to refine the Sony a7 mirrorless to a professional level. In general, the attempt was successful.

8. General lens experience

Sony FE 2.8 / 70-200 G GM OSS (SEL70200GM) - good TOP lens. Decent image quality. I liked it very much. The only thing was that the clips of the clamp from the tripod foot were fixed so tightly that I could not unscrew them. Small archive with source files here.

9. Update.

On 03.10.2019/9/9, a new camera was announced - Sony aXNUMX II with relatively minor changes. I can only note that such small changes in the new camera say only one thing - the first Sony aXNUMX was a little 'damp'.

Interesting camera. Arkady, will there be photos?

    • anonym

Oh, there is an archive with a photo, senks.

      • Denis

downloaded. Looks great at first glance. increase the picture is contraindicated)
probably it’s an aggressive squelch or JPEG with strong compression, but it resembles a soap box. however, the files are quite large (11 megabytes)

        • Denis

          autofocus did a great job

  • Alexey

“I hope in the near future a neural interface will be created for focusing where the photographer wants.” - so in fact the same Canon began to develop similar with its focusing system, controlled by the photographer's eye.

    • Rodion

By the way, yes, there was such a thing on EOS film cameras yet.

  • anonym

Somehow biased towards Sonya and sooo superficially written ...

    • anonym

This is an impression, not a review. And the impression of more important technical characteristics, Arkady correctly wrote that this Sonya is PR. So will someone tell me what's up for 5000 bucks?

    • reader

I agree with you. very crap. Sonya is better to do something else clearly.

  • photo shooter

And I still like Nikon / Canon bricks! And this is my point of view and I don’t tie anyone on it!)))) Well, I like how Arkady put it, combo monsters! In no case do I tie any photo religion!

    • photo shooter

      and besides they are cheaper)))))

      • photo shooter

I mean not the newest models

        • Basil

New expensive technologies first coexist with old proven and more affordable ones, largely inferior to them. Then they catch up and overtake.

  • Basil

Fuji, watch and learn who to give equipment for review.

  • zengarden

In general, Arkady did not like the camera. I will not buy :)

    • Basil

That's right, we take the old unsuitable Canon 300d!

    • Arkady Shapoval

I would not mind a9, forget about the focus points and enjoy shooting - Kenny is right about something.

      • zengarden

But who is against something ... people on the reviews almost write with boiling water from her.
Still, Sony worked on the bugs.
Now we are waiting for 9R and 9S :)

  • Basil

I think that with the advent of a new wave of digital matrices, Sony will fall out of the trend. Too expensive and crutch optics for them under their alpha.

There is hope for new wave companies. Panasonic is exploring something there, shooting without a shutter and a rolling tent, super DD of 20 stops - yes.

Sony is working on bent matrices but ... Fig knows him. In general, the problems of modern photography have long been not in the field of technology, but in the field of aesthetics. Fashion, erotica and pornography mixed with blatant mediocrity. You need to work on yourself, and not to drool over the new coveted publicized box.

  • lynx

    In short - sleepyheads everywhere.

    • Basil

Lynx, as always, does not like Sonya :)

  • Koba

In the internet it is written that this new A9 is a champion at high ISO. Kill it, but it's not! Yes, they set high ISOs and remove noise, but precisely due to signal processing, then there is noise reduction. Comparing files for more than one year, I still remain with the opinion that there is nothing better than a matrix from Nikon D4 (D4s but in it, as it seems to me5, Nikon himself began to process files) and, accordingly, Df is not on the market yet. The rest of the cameras with ISO 12800 get along well with DD, and their color begins to float and the files become friable, it is impossible to draw intelligible shadows from them. But, today I accidentally stumbled upon a Nikon D700 + 28-105D in a shop at a friend's store, almost in perfect condition, all together for $ 685, and bought it. This is despite the fact that I have a 5D3 with three professional lenses ... For users, the appearance of new and more sophisticated cameras is very good, since the old and advanced enough cameras and lenses to solve almost any tasks are greatly devalued ... That's the whole philosophy! If you spend extra money, then on some good lens, and then you need to prepare for this lens so that it does not rust at home later ... to make masterpieces, in this regard, this camera is just a godsend ...

The number of OCHE-heats just goes off scale and "hurts the eye"

really? no more than usual, and eyes do not cut IMHO

Pichrion Egoto, it’s because we don’t make every single pumpkin separately, but everything is done solely.

            • Vania

This does not negate the fact that your text is written illiterate and it is unpleasant to read it.
              Bb +1.

    • Vadim

Everyone started to crush noise in RAW back in 2009 with the D3S, which is generally normal if the algorithms are good

Another thing Dynamic Range at high ISO
Here A7S and A9 are the leaders among all, with a good card on low values, unlike D5

  • Michael R.

Yes ... after such a review,
    no canons, nickans, etc.
will no longer invite our esteemed Arkady to any presentations ..
A joke of course, but seriously,
then you need to thank the author for such a sober flock.

  • Dmitriy

I love to read Sony reviews from Arcadia. Especially on new cameras. In the general stream of lies like a balm for wounds :) Arkady, thank you!
And Sony's manager is right, this review is only a plus for the camera. Those people who do not believe in the lies of jeans will completely trust such a note from Arkady and buy a "just a good camera"

  • Konstantin

And can you read more about the joystick and the choice of the focus point? Why suffer with a joystick, if there is a touch screen? Or can’t you point the focus point with a touch?

P.S. I hope the joystick will not need to be cleaned every couple of months, like on the Sony Ericsson K700 and others? Or cook ear sticks and alcohol?

    • Basil

I have k800 (by the way, my first digital camera), I have never cleaned it.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Using the display is inconvenient, you need to tear yourself away from the EVI.

      • Peter

Either in Panas, or on oliks, you can already look through the viewfinder with your finger on the screen and use the joystick to select a point. Still touch.

        • anonym

          In sony too

  • Andrei

Arkady, I am following your work with pleasure.
Thank you for the long and in my opinion huge work in the implementation of such a project.
However, this material makes clear the position of the author regarding the equipment under test, which is somewhat impartial. No? Although almost completely agree with the review, and with the conclusions. The feeling of this review is completely discouraged by the desire to even test the camera.
    Respect.

    • Arkady Shapoval

And now, carefully and in large letters - this is not a review, but my impressions.

      • Andrei

Regarding my attention, there is one excerpt from the text, although there are still some: I did not want to take the Sony a9 for review. Hence the conclusions that this is still a review. Further text confirms this statement.

        • Arkady Shapoval

No, it does not confirm. This is not a review. First black and white:

“I was only given the camera for a few days, so I did not prepare a detailed review of the Sony a9. In this article, I will only express my impressions of Sony a9 and Sony FE 2.8 / 70-200 G GM OSS (SEL70200GM). ”

  • Oleksandr

My reflections. It is difficult to judge the ergonomics and functionality of the camera, since I personally did not hold it in my hands. And all this is subjective. But, there are things that cannot be hidden. In particular, this is the image quality, which, alas, is rather mediocre. Excuse me, I certainly understand what was filmed at f2,8 JPEG and ffse like that, but the sharpness in the pictures is far-fetched and quite reminiscent of the result of using a primitive contour sharpening tool in Photoshop. Almost one to one. The detail is weak. No noise at ISO 100 - an achievement !!! But the result of intra-chamber post processing is clearly noticeable, and even not of the best quality. The autofocus miss is clearly visible in the photo with the cat, and I personally do not understand its nature. After such an advertisement! For comparison: if you take an old AF Nikkor 28-105mm 1: 3.5-4.5 and put on a Nikon D7000, then in autofocus mode, you can effortlessly choose which pistil to focus on while shooting small strawberry flowers! And whether to focus at all on the anther of the pistil, or is it better to focus on the front petal! And this is not an exaggeration, but an example from personal experience. Smudge at exposure 1/500! This I generally refuse to understand. As well as about photos taken at high ISO - not even worth talking about. It's just porridge. That's the whole Sony A9. It turns out more pathos and advertising than real merits. Very primitive for the money! IMHO.

    • anonym

So is Arkady right? Is everything overrated?

      • Oleksandr

Arkady is right 100 pudoff! SONY A9 is a very technological device. Everything is on top in it: both design, and ergonomics, and speed, and other pseudo-technological chips there. Maybe even ergonomics. The only weak link is the output frame. And the price. In confirmation, it is enough to download the archive of Arkady, and carefully study it. And then look at the price tag of this device. And if you have a lot of money and it is very important to look spectacular, then this is your choice.

        • Vadim

Most likely this is your video card that processes on-the-fly the image from the A9 and makes it super-sharp ..
It is especially noticeable on FHD monitors, I have already gone and struggled with it more than once, but it only went away after the monitor upgrade

  • Pashqwert

And I liked the vividness of the picture in the photographs in the archive (unless, of course, Arkady did not show them). They look very nice, naturally, fresh. When considering not pixel by pixel (100%), but at a scale of 50%, interpolation artifacts are hidden and the boundaries are clear, the texture of surfaces is preserved. Yes, a photo at high ISO is pure creativity of the brush of the “intelligence” built into the camera, but still, under forced circumstances, nothing “masterpiece” is obtained and no one is particularly concerned with post-processing, getting a similar result.
The emphasis on camera professionalism is the same as that of professional toothbrush manufacturers - just to say it. Or for the same “professionals” -amateurs who take pictures at their leisure. Therefore, when asked about the estimated cost, my answer could offend the feelings of sony marketers.

  • Pashqwert

Interestingly, I re-read the review and looked at the photos from the Nikon D80 review (mentioned in the article), I suggest that you look there to compare pigeons, people, in general colors, contrast, DD, noise, and personally appreciate what modern technologies have brought to this digital environment during this time a photograph. Personally, I remembered why I loved the pictures from the D50, as well as what I lacked in them.

    • Oleg

Since so many yearn for color and we, besides Sonya, still consider other systems as an example, I will allow a little offtopic. Recently, on the network, I saw such a mirrorless mirrorless monster: http://sigma-photo.com.ru/cameras/sd-quattro she has an older sister whose sensor size is APC-H. It is a pity that these kind of cameras that are away from the main stream do not fall on the review to Arcadia

      • Pokekmon

        2 Oleg:
SD QH with APS-H matrix appeared in retail only in the spring of this year.
This is a rare camera for the Sigma SA mount with the same rare lenses for this mount. Specifically for this matrix, Sigma itself recommends glasses of the ART series, which work with ff matrices - such as 35 / 1.4 ART or the new 24-70 / 2.8 ART with their price tags that are not very humane at the present time.
Foveon fans who previously owned cameras in the Merrill family and older say that color has fallen on the new SD series cameras.
I myself am the owner of the SD1 Merrill and like other Sigma on Foveone this is a very specific camera.

        • Oleg

The camera is very specific, very narrow focus, the camera is not for everyone, let's say so. But still, the company goes its own way, relying on its own developments and I think in the next couple of three years it will master the full frame, which makes it a plus. Well, what do traditional monsters offer: “I'm Kenon, I released a brick with a resolution of 50 megapixels. I am nikon, I made a brick with ISO three million, of which 12000 are really working. I am Sonya, I released a compact, full-frame mirrorless camera, but if you put my lens on it, you can easily hammer a nail into the wall. " Photography is such a thing that it is difficult to do something revolutionary in it nowadays, so the release of a new camera is usually the release of another marketing brick or brick like with the Sony-a9

  • dragon yes not snape

I wonder if the guys from Sony are masochists? Why do they stubbornly give Arkady their questionable products? It is absolutely clear that Arkady will write about sleepyheads: you shouldn't take shit. And then the whole site will start collecting money for the purchase of a new Ilse9. To sum up, the camera turned out to be good, but the professionals will still stick to the canon-nikons.

  • Peter Sh.

And let's look at the horses in a vacuum. This time from dpreview.
In particular, take a closer look at the noise.

    • Valentine

Why watch the noise pixel by pixel on 100% crop with noise canceling turned off completely? It seems that powerful processors are put in place and complex algorithms for careful noise reduction are written, so that they can be used if necessary, and not turned off. Yes, and practical sense in a pixel-by-pixel comparison of 100% crop can only be with hard cropping of the image, when each pixel becomes a physical point of the monitor or print. It seems to me that even in this case, the claims are not well-founded, since the camera is not an electron microscope in order to give 100% pixel-by-pixel image accuracy at high ISO. Therefore, whether one camera will be pixel by pixel a little better than another does not matter to me at work. If you do not rigidly crop and do not pull three stops, then from all these cameras, images at ISO 12 800 will give that when you print, an excellent picture, that when viewed on the screen and placed on the network.

Why do we need cameras with a large sensor? If you do not rigidly crop and do not pull three stops and post on VKontakte, then the phone will be enough ... even full HD is not needed.

        • Valentine

The large sensor does not help to pull three stops, but interferes. Plus a large sensor: print large, crop (moderation has not been canceled), detail (you can still argue here). Your words about the phone only complete the impression. Large resolution and large sensor size are not the same thing. The phone has no sensor, so low resolution does not save it.

          • Michael

You did not understand me. I mean, 2-3 MP is enough for networks, and the size of the phone's sensor will pull it, like simple pictures with a small DD. The large sensor does not help to pull, but plays an important role in detail. You correctly pointed out about printing and cropping, and this contradicts your previous post about the unimportance of pixel sharpness and noise. Why do you need permission if you don't use it anyway? If I take a 40 MPix device, then I need it (well, I don't need it) and I need a resolution of 40 MP, not 10-20-30 ...

            • Valentine

What will the size of the phone’s sensor pull: resolution will pull, or will image quality pull? If you are talking about quality (even for social networks), then the conversation on this point can be completed.
Further, I do not contradict myself. If you need 40 megapixels, for God's sake. But who told you that you should receive these 40 megapixels (honest to the last pixel) in excellent quality with ISO 12 800 and even with noise reduction turned off?

              • Michael

But if I get excellent quality from another competitor (suppose), then it is obvious which camera I will choose. Especially if I need these 40 MP. I consider the lack of matrix noise at high ISO, because any noise reduction is a loss of details.

              • Valentine

In those images that were at ISO 12 800, not a single matrix showed excellent images with 100% crop and noise reduction disabled. Therefore, what you are trying to prove, I do not understand. Not a single normal photographer will shoot pixel-by-pixel for printing at ISO 12 and even not use noise reduction and processing of such an image. This is really a spherical horse in a vacuum, the debate about which has no practical significance. Normal working ISO a800, so it's already nitpicking.

      • Peter Sh.

What do you mean why? You surprise me…
To deprive yourself of hair in horror that your "killer of DSLRs" does not want to kill them.

To see the capabilities of the matrix, as it were. About hints, at least somehow. Here is a noise and shut off. You can’t compare them all together in the work yourself.

The difference in noise here is far from "a little", and far from everything can be repaired with a noise control.

        Something like that.

        • Ivan

Lord, sigma is wretched with it ??? What are you talking about here in general? I have never seen sigmatron cameras or optics in the hands of serious photographers in my life ... Technique is not a reason for everyone to curl up in time as Koreans did with samsa in their time ... Sony by the way covers a part of the market professionals.

          • Rodion

            What sigma?

            • Ivan

Rodya the dark-skinned kid also does not understand the value of these discussions)))

        • Valentine

Peter, well, so be it. Suppose that with noise at high ISOs in pixel-by-pixel comparisons, we realized that the A9 loses. Does it follow that the camera is unusable? In my opinion, Arkady more accurately wrote why the A9 does not replace a good DSLR (it’s not a matter of noise): firstly, it’s not at all the ergonomics (it’s different in the hands, different weight distribution, the wrong buttons, menus, auxiliary information, displays etc.); secondly, a complex focusing system, to which you need to adapt or shoot in series and then look at and catch a suitable frame. There are a lot of goodies, but again, all these goodies have little to do with the basic needs of the photographer, but you can immediately feel the convenience of using the camera. On the other hand, Sony’s mirrorless power has always been compact / lightweight with very good technology, so less convenience is partly the price.

          • Oleg

Wear any native lens on it and you can forget about compactness and lightness

            • Valentine

Yes, okay, do you compare Sonya with a lens with an empty Nikon or Kenon carcass or something?
Here, though not a9, but it’s kind of clear who won in size with lenses: https://petapixel.com/assets/uploads/2016/12/fullframeshootout_feat.jpg
And here a9 vs D850 is purely carcass: http://cameradecision.com/sizecomparison/Sony-Alpha-A9-vs-Nikon-D850-size-comparison.jpg
Then everyone decides for himself what is more important to him. So far my choice is DSLRs.

              • Pashqwert

When I changed the first soap dish to the second one, then yes, the size of 2 cm played a big role - it was no longer possible to fit into all the pockets and the convenience of everyday wearing could be forgotten. In relation to the system camera, with which you want to have a couple more filters at hand, a different lens (fixed / zoom) and a flash just in case (it was not for nothing that such a camera was bought, and not an advanced soap dish) - the size is leveled, it comes to the fore weight. And you take such a thing purposefully - to shoot, and not just in case. Therefore, the smaller handle of the D7000 compared to the D50 does not give me positive emotions.

              • Oleg

No, the camera is positioned as a professional, reporting. So you set the reporting zoom as 24-70 \ 2.8 or 70-200 \ 2.8, take extra Akum in addition and you no longer have a gain not in compactness and not in weight. Yes, walking with one fixative is one thing, but as soon as it comes to zoom, then all the compactness disappears. Moreover, all Sony's lenses are not lighter, and no less than their mirror counterparts, even fixes. All these are large, heavy and expensive lenses as well as their mirror counterparts. Here is an article on this person who held it all in his hands: https://prophotos.ru/reviews/18656-sony-fe-24-70mm-f-2-8-gm-test. And in the review 85 \ 1.4 it is written in black and white: the theme of compact mirrorless mirrors has already been played out. Full-speed, full-frame optics cannot be compact, and the same high-speed zooms. Fudge got compact, but there is a crop

          • Peter Sh.

"One of the main reasons is the usual form factor of the Sony a9 body and terrible handling ..."

“For me as a practicing photographer, there is nothing fundamentally new about the Sony a9 ...”

There is no question of any usability and very good technologies. Not yet.
Compactness and lightness are also not necessary here, we are not talking about soap boxes. Oleg is right. This is generally not relevant for serious work.
In SLRs, a separate module with a separate matrix is responsible for autofocus. They will always be one step ahead of mirrorless ones.

And yes, in this case, the camera is positioned as the highest level, and such noises indicate its complete unsuitability.

It seems that mirrorless will remain the prerogative of amateurs. In the foreseeable foreseeable future.

            • Valentine

Peter, about convenience I’m just writing in favor of DSLRs, not Sonya. Arkady just indicates that ergonomics are unimportant, and this is a very big minus for prof. models. But dimensions and dimensions are also important. I know people who switched to Sonya for this reason. And Oleg generally wrote absurdity, because it’s easy to look at Sonya with a lens and Kenon Mark 4 or Nikon d850 with a lens on the Internet and everything will be very clear who has the gain in size. By weight, too, a 40 percent difference in favor of Sonya.

              • Oleg

Aha absurdity look at the picture from 70-200 at the top of the review where is compactness? Here is a quote from the professional photo for the 24-70 \ 2.8 review: “As I already noted in the Sony FE 85mm f / 1.4 GM review, G Master lenses are heavy artillery, and in the literal sense of the word. The SEL2470GM weighs almost 900 grams, which is quite comparable to the weight of many fast DSLR counterparts, and in some cases even exceeds them. " Moreover, the combination of a heavy lens and a light camera may not be entirely convenient. Add here the dying Akum and the need to attach a battery pack and there is no trace of compactness. No matter how beautiful the EVI is, but it eats up the battery.

              • Oleg

Now about the weight: Sony a9-673 grams. Kenon 5d mark4-890gramm. Will 220 grams save you with the need to carry additional Akum?

              • John

Oleg, and if not size and weight, then what is the point in a mirrorless?

              • Pashqwert

I suppose the meaning of the mirrorless is the same as “why sausages made of paper and soy are better than steam cut, than boots made of shit are better than two-layer leather crusts, and than a shirt made of fused cellophane is better than pure wool and cotton.” (the phrase is not mine, but the topic). There is such a word "manufacturability" in production. The consumer benefits from this only in the choice and sometimes in the price, but not in this case. And for the manufacturer, a direct reduction in production costs, mirror alignment and focusing units.

          • Oleg

What is the meaning of mirrorless? In short, in Ponte. Humor. An indispensable thing for working with manual optics. Perfect in this regard for an amateur, I agree with some fixes. But as soon as you put your native optics, nobody argues of excellent optical quality, we forget about compactness

            • Igor

The focus is accurate, there is no mirror and problems with the back and front focus. At dusk and at night, a frame is visible. In all cases, the frame is equal to the future photo.

  • Pastor

Flood off topic - when will the 300d review? A very cool camera for me :) The first amateur digital SLR. At the same time, two screens and a comfortable grip. Moreover, the color is excellent. I only have problems with autofocus, the rest of the camera can! And then they praise all sorts of new items like 40d or 400d, but nowhere is a word about the good old 300d :)

  • Sergeyich

The Sony A9 discussion thread is likely to pick up a huge number of comments.
However, a person who has the financial ability and desire will not read either Arkady’s impressions or our comments. He just goes and buys, because this is Sony’s top mirrorless mirror, and it doesn’t matter if he takes it for professional purposes or to rent a family.
And I, having Nikon d90 + 18-105kit and saving for a year and a half on Nikon d7200, with the help of Radozhiva, I will strengthen my belief that Sony A9 is not worth the money.
Otherwise, I would definitely buy it.

    • Oleg

      Totally agree

    • Valentine

And why are you saving up for the Nikon D7200, and not for any Sonya from the same price category? I am sure that you yourself understand why Nikon is better than Sony for you. And a person with a big budget will choose between A9 and other tops in the same way, and you will see even more tests on these cameras.
And by the way, I would not be in a hurry to change the D90 to D7200 at all, unless your D90 is falling apart. Filmed D90, D7100, D7200. Of course, the D7200 is undeniably better than the D90 in terms of its performance. But only when understanding shooting, processing RAW and some accessories for different cases (optics, external flash), the picture from the D90 is actually not much inferior to the D7200. I would not even save ...

      • Sergeyich

        To Valentine.
In my case, you just need a second camera. Since d90 everything is fine, he is not killed, but his wife is actively using it. Now take another d90 (used)? Well, the d7200, on the whole, is newer, the other processor and the matrix, the AF module from the latest developments (the d500 does not count). Well, in general, this camera is praised. My colleague has a d7100, I shot them a couple of times, my impressions are good.
I considered the option of another system as if in addition. Tests in the Sony a6000 electronics supermarket + kit 16-50. There are only two advantages over the 7200 - size and weight, by the way, the grip of the a6000 is comfortable. But the AF logic of the a6000 is similar to Sony's digital compacts. They say that it is POSSIBLE to set the focus area, but you have to climb into the menu, and this is a waste of time. After the shutter is released, the resulting picture is displayed for a couple of seconds in the EVI, you can reset it ahead of schedule, but only by pressing the shutter button again. At such a Sonya matinee, I definitely will not "catch" my child.
As a result, I realized that I wanted a more versatile camera, albeit at the expense of compactness, as well as with the ability to expand the DX-optics fleet, which is more diverse and much cheaper than the Sony SEL ...

        • Valentine

Sergeich, I see. An acquaintance of mine in the same situation acted easier - he left the D90 for himself, and his wife took a little used D3200 for ten (it is easier for a woman, but it will be easier).

          • Sergeyich

Uh no, her brother has d3200. She doesn't like it, the viewfinder is small, the focus points are very small and the AF is slower. I checked it myself. after d90 it is a real “brake” in AF.

            • Sergeyich

And further. Its dimensions and weight d90 do not bother at all. I threw it into the bag - and go!
He loves portraits and reporting, and I love nature and reporting. So we divide the camera into two.

            • Valentine

Well, yes, the D3200 has a slightly smaller and darker viewfinder. But the focus module is the same, and I can’t note any brakes for the D3200, and the size of the focus points is close, except that the D90 has a brighter and thicker frame around the points + there is a grid.
I like the D90 for its ergonomics (additional display, two wheels, everything is on the buttons, and yes, the viewfinder is better). It is easier to work with it in PASM modes, when you deliberately set and control the settings. But the D3200 is smaller and lighter, the sensor is more modern and the working ISO is higher, there are still small pluses. In general, if the wife is an advanced user - D90 is in her hands, if on the machines - D3200 is more than enough. True, we left the Sony topic, so I apologize for my flood.

  • Vladimir

Taking this opportunity, I would like to ask a question about choosing a new camera.

Now I have a Nikon D5100, it distresses me with autofocus, which pounds with a rather large spread, it doesn’t have to happen at times, but in poor light it’s sad. A little, but not critically upsetting, is a noisy picture that smoothly smooths the on-camera jeep, but for some reason does not take Lightroom: either noise or soap. And in this regard, I would like to change the camera, but here are a bunch of options:

-D5500, D5600 - as I understand it is the same, but autofocus will already be normal, plus the price is not biting.
-D7100, D7200, D7500 - for the first two the price is also quite tolerable, as a bonus I will get a screwdriver for old lenses and a service menu with autofocus adjustment. The third one stands as a full frame, so there is no particular desire to look at it, but what if the D7100 and D7200 also have fig autofocus?
-D610 and D750 are pretty close in characteristics, but judging by the specifications, the D750 has excellent AF and also has a tilting display, which is important to me. Finance only allows you to take “gray” versions of these cameras. The fact that I have to part with sigma 17-50 2.8 for a crop will somehow survive, but I have nothing else of value for a crop.

I will be very grateful to people who can explain which of the listed (or others) is worth stopping at and why. I don’t want to give a fairly large amount for a full frame.

    • Alexey

Good autofocus on the D7200, D7500, D750, D700, D3, D3s, D300, D300s. Full-frame cameras have less noise. Maybe look in the direction of second-hand? Then you won’t have to part with sigma).

      • Vladimir

        Thanks for the answer, Alex.

Are there any arguments for the D7500 regarding the D7200? I like the flip screen in it (although it is not the same as in the five thousandth series), but there is no sense in overpaying for one screen twice. In addition, the D750 is quite slightly more expensive.

I don’t want to consider used equipment. The result is either a D7200 or a D750? If I take the D7200, regret will not come after six months of use? :)

        • Alexey

D750 is almost twice as expensive, but it's a full frame with all the consequences.

    • Vadim

Strange, I also have a D5100 and I have no complaints about autofocus. In addition to it, I have an amateur optics park for all occasions (Nikora 18-55,55-300,35, Tokina 11-16 and Helios 81N). Misses happen very rarely, mainly at 55-300 and then in poor light. I focus mainly on the center point.

      • Vladimir

I don’t even know then what’s the matter, I also always focus on the central point. It’s not that he’s pounding the wrong way, mowing it a little closer or farther, but the picture is eventually soapy.

        • Pashqwert

If possible, I advise you to rent (or from a friend) for a couple of days a similar lens from Nikon or even a camera planned for purchase. Rental costs will help you save money in the near future.
If not, then I would venture to give more advice without knowing your experience in photography, try looking for a topic on the dependence of focus on the level and type of illumination, and at the same time on the label for infrared focusing on old lenses. Funny topic and about adjusting the zoom lenses.
In my opinion, all that the devices from the 7xxx series can give is a fine-tuning of autofocus (and in the latter automatic). Which you will do before each shooting in specific conditions and on the focal ones supposed to be used. Switching to a full frame in the absence of a budget will give even less than expanding the fleet of lenses and auxiliary equipment.

          • Vladimir

On other lenses, the camera behaves the same. I understand that the focus is floating from the light, but I don’t even have AF repeatability on the target, which I shoot under the same conditions. On manual lenses with a Lushnikov dandelion, the camera fires long before the desired location, no matter which side you approach (MDF or infinity).

            • Valentine

The topic is about the A9, not about autofocus on the D5100. Definitely, this is not a normal situation when there are focusing misses. Even on the simplest cameras, this is not a typical situation at all. There may be many reasons, and there is no point in rushing to change the camera - the service will help.

  • VLAD

READ ALL !! IF what happens to your camera, then know!

Sony Ukraine has 1 single certified or official EPC service center for brand Vovka 18a in Kiev. The rest of their service only deal with single-lens soap dishes.

I phoned the EPC repairer (he’s only been there for 13 years) and agreed that I was going to Kiev, I’ll bring a sony a7r camera so that I would do everything in Kiev. I drove the camera because of the autofocus adjustment minolta 85 1.4 d + LA4 was the front focus. On the phone, the repairman said it’s business in 5 minutes. He brought the camera - when receiving absolutely wooden staff, the camera lay for 30 minutes with the matrix at the top (a lot of dust poured), but not the point. So the repairman’s conclusion is that the adjustment could not be done because the USB port is not connected, for this reason he disassembled the camera to find out the reason, it turned out that there was just such a glitch in the camera. I suggested replacing the whole board, I agreed, but I had to wait 2 weeks, and at that time after 4 days I was shooting a wedding, yes Arkady with Sonya a7p)). I had to refuse and just pick up the camera. It was clear that I had to pay for everything, but when I took the camera, it turned out that there were stubs where the USB was. The master called in response and said that this is on all 7 Series cameras, I argued with him for a long time that this was not the case, etc ... In total, he went to disassemble the camera again and went out with the words "and it is true, it turns out that you can tighten these plugs on these cameras" gave the camera turned around and left. Of course I was shocked ... But this is all garbage. When they went to take pictures at night that night, it turned out that the diaphragm wheel does not work. On the trail. the day did not work, it will appear at the service, as there was a holiday, constitution day, and the train was sent. I waited for a working day, and sent them a camera to fix this problem. The repairman creeped me terribly over the phone, supposedly I came up with it all. But that’s all) The camera comes to me on the 18th of this month, with the faults resolved, but with a crack on the case where the bolts were spinning, well, of course, scratches. And a piece of paper)) that when the camera was received, a crack was already detected on the case)) The crack is precisely under the bolts. I wasn’t shocked ... They answer me that the Turman Express service (their full delivery officer) may be to blame for which they asked them to send the camera, but the service has absolutely no responsibility for what is in the box. I wrote, called customer support, in Sony - they hit the drum for the service.
And the SERVICE is not responsible, as they are supervised by the Sony company.
It has been 1 month since my last visit to Kiev, and there are still disputes with Sony's company, which does not want to do anything.
they don’t have a direct number to call
EPC service says - we can do nothing without Sony Ukraine
and Sony says, well, the crack was made before visiting the serv, that's all)) ...
Of course I’m trying to convey to them - that the crack is exactly where the bolt was spinning.
There is such a place that it is simply impossible to break it
SO THAT NEVER TAKE ANYTHING FROM SONIA) my advice
so I brought the camera to Kiev)) just for tuning)))

    • Artem

Well, Sony before skiing Nikon and Kenon to the moon. and imagine you carried a9? and such.

  • Paul

Yes, they want too much money for it. Especially compared to the A7II, and despite the fact that there is nothing beyond what is necessary for this money. The A7II is worth my money. If I had to choose between the A9 and Nikon D850, I would choose the D850.

  • Michael

    I always thought that the prices for 1dxm2 ($ 6500) and d5 ($ 6000) are a little inadequate.
Although it is clear that the pros are willing to pay so much for the reporting FF from 12-14k / s.
And here for 20k / s only $ 4500 + a few additional buns in the form of a stabilizer, a completely silent shooting mode.
It turns out that this is not a killer of DSLRs, but simply a more profitable camera with slightly better functionality.
Well, we, ordinary people, are waiting more for a7 III at an affordable price =)

    • Paul

You forgot to mention the watering can and haseblade, that's where the real inadequate)))

      • Oleg

Watering can is a status camera, like an expensive watch. We managed to create an image for which the well-prepared are willing to pay. Nobody wants to pay for the zenith and the sharp-sighted, therefore they peacefully reposed to themselves. Well, Hasel is medium format, again, demand creates supply, there are those who are willing to pay for it https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=38&v=MErnhqI5kzQ

        • Paul

I think such brands are made specifically for drug dealers to launder money) And for people like Medvedev. In general, their price has long lost touch with photography.

          • Oleg

Well, well, Moncler fashion house ordered a shot from Annie Leibovitz in Hassel. And so for most amateurs, the functionality of some kind of Nikon 5100 or Kenon 100d is enough. By the way, the video above shows well how huge post-processing plays even for Hassel

  • Dmitriy

What can I say, a cool camera. The main nitpick is the price: this tool costs 150000 more than other good fullframes. Grip is not very good without additional "attachments".
