SIGMA DL ZOOM 35-80mm 1: 4-5.6 MULTI-COATED

SIGMA DL ZOOM 35-80mm 1: 4-5.6 MULTI-COATED

Briefly about the review

I got the idea to buy and shoot with the cheapest autofocus lens for the popular Nikon or Canon system. Over the course of a week, I monitored large online flea markets in search of the treasured grail. It was the SIGMA DL ZOOM 35-80mm 1: 4-5.6 MULTI-COATED lens for the Nikon system.

Also, the lens models turned out to be very cheap:

  • Quantaray. The cheapest I've seen is Quantaray NF AF 1: 3.5-5.6 f = 28-80mm Multi-Coated
  • Tamron. The cheapest I've seen is Tamron AF 28-80mm 1: 3.5-5.6 Aspherical, 77D, 177D, 277D
  • Tokina. The cheapest I've seen is the Tokina AF 28-80mm 1: 3.5-5.6, model 280 AF
  • Promaster. The cheapest I've seen is Promaster Spectrum 7 1: 4-5.6 f = 35-80mm Multi-coated
  • Cosina. The cheapest I've seen is Cosina 28-80mm 1: 3.5-5.6 MC MACRO
  • Vivitar. The cheapest I've seen is Vivitar Auto Focus Zoom 28-80mm 1: 3.5-5.6 MC
  • Phoenix. The cheapest I've seen is Phoenix 28-80mm 1: 3.5-5.6 AF ZOOM MACRO
  • Nikon. The cheapest I've seen is Nikon AF Nikkor 35-80mm 1: 4-5.6D MKII
  • Canon. The cheapest I've seen is Canon Zoom Lens EF 35-80mm 1: 4-5.6

My research into flea markets has shown that the cheapest autofocus lenses are 'dark' full-frame universal zoom lenses with focal length sets: 28-70, 28-80, 28-90, 28-100, 28-105, 35-70, 35- 80 and 35-105 mm.

The cheapest lenses are lenses from third party manufacturers or brands, especially options for less popular systems such as Pentax and Sony / Minolta. The same lenses for Nikon or Canon are significantly more expensive.

Assembly

Build quality Sigma 35-80 / 4-5.6 is at a good level, of the obvious shortcomings, I found only the backlash of the focus ring. The lens uses a metal mount. The retractable frame of the housing consists of one section. Rubberized focus and zoom rings. Ring aperture plastic. The zoom ring rotates 45 degrees without jerking. Housing design inherent to very old Sigma lenses. The body coating that uses Sigma 35-80 / 4-5.6 overwrites over time, and the lens loses its presentable appearance, but the lens from the review has been preserved well.

The frame (trunk) of the Sigma 35-80 / 4-5.6 does not spontaneously change its size under its own weight, it is stated that the lens uses Sigma ZEN technology to prevent such a nuisance.

The Sigma 35-80 / 4-5.6 uses a bayonet hood that locks into the grooves on the main body of the body (actually on the focusing ring). During focal length changes, the hood does not move with the movable frame of the body. The hood can be installed in the opposite direction for transportation.

Sigma 35-80 / 4-5.6 has a feature - the trunk of the lens lengthens with a decrease in focal length. Sometimes it’s a little annoying, it’s usual that the longer the trunk of the lens - the more focal length established, because they often joke that such lenses have a range of focal lengths not of '35 -80 ′, but of '80 -35 ′. With this design, you can more efficiently use a lens hood, which can be very long and well protect the lens from side light at any focal length.

During a change in focal length, the rear lens remains stationary.

Устройство aperture consists of 7 not rounded petals.

Focusing

Auto focus speed is fast (closer to medium).

During focusing, the front lens and the frame for filters spin and drive forward. When changing the focal length, the front lens does not rotate.

The focus ring rotates 90 degrees. The stroke of the ring is smooth. The minimum focusing distance is 0.5 m.

When used on a camera Nikon D90 (with unpretentious Multi-CAM 1000 focusing system) and Nikon D70s (with unpretentious Multi-CAM 900 focusing system) behaves well, rarely makes a mistake in focusing. On camera Nikon D90 I checked the presence of the back and focus front at different focusing distances and different values of the focal length (infinity and MDF as well). Pictures taken using the Live View mode (which does not suffer from back / front focus) were used as a measure. Focusing accuracy using phase sensors completely coincided with the Live View mode.

It's important: auto focus with this lens is available only when using him on cameras with built-in motor focusing.

Exact list Nikon DSLR cameras with a built-in focus motor, on which this lens will focus automatically:

Exact list Nikon DSLR cameras without a built-in focus motor, on which this lens will not focus automatically:

Only auto focus and sound confirmation of focus will not work with these cameras, all other important functions, such as automatic exposure metering and automatic iris control, will work well.

You will find a lot of useful information on the types of cameras and lenses Nikon here.

Focus Features:

  1. Sigma 35-80 / 4-5.6 does not have a focus mode switch. To translate the lens into manual focus on cameras with motor For focusing, use the focus mode switching lever located near the camera mount. For cameras without motor Only manual focus mode will always be available for focusing.
  2. During focusing, the focus ring rotates and must not be touched.
  3. Focus speed may vary slightly from the camera used. This issue has been considered. here.
  4. During focusing, the lens and camera are quite noisy. Noise is heard even during manual focus.
  5. There is a small effect of 'Focus Breathing' (changing the viewing angle during focusing).
  6. Sigma 35-80 / 4-5.6 is a third party lens. It may happen that it will not work correctly with some Nikon cameras. Details on this issue have been reviewed by me here.
  7. When changing the focal length, focusing is lost.
  8. Sigma 35-80 / 4-5.6 does not transmit the focus distance to the subject in the camera and is a type lens Nikon NON-D.
  9. The lens has a scale with a focusing distance in meters and feet. Such a scale in itself is of little use and is present more for show (justification of this thought here) The distance scale is made using a special window.
  10. Unknown compatibility with teleconverters.
  11. Sigma 35-80 / 4-5.6 does not have hard stop (hard infinity mechanical stop) which allows you to accurately and quickly focus the lens at infinity under any external conditions.
  12. The lens has a manual aperture ring. To be able to control the value aperture from camera or for automatic installation aperture on modern central control valves, you need to turn the control ring to the extreme position and fix it with a special switch, which is located on the right. If this is not done, then on a number of cameras, the display will display an error - 'fEE' (ring is not installed aperture) Some cameras having diaphragm rheostatallow you to control the aperture using the ring aperturebut only in metering modes exposure 'M' and 'A'. You can read more about this issue in the section on Non-G Lenses. Ring aperture rotates with clicks.

Brief comparison with whale lenses of the 18-55 class

SIGMA DL ZOOM 35-80mm 1: 4-5.6 MULTI-COATED can even be something beat standard 18-55 / 3.5 (4) -5.6 whale lenses, which are considered the simplest and cheapest (if you buy new):

  1. Sigma 35-80 / 4-5.6 uses a metal mount
  2. Sigma 35-80 / 4-5.6 touch stronger lens
  3. For Sigma 35-80 / 4-5.6, the focal length at the long end is 80 mm, instead of 55 mm for whale lenses (almost 1.5 times longer)
  4. Sigma 35-80 / 4-5.6 is suitable for full-format cameras, while whale lenses 18-55 / 3.5 (4) -5.6 are designed to work with cropped cameras
  5. Sigma 35-80 / 4-5.6 has an aperture control ring
  6. Sigma 35-80 / 4-5.6 has a window with a focusing distance
  7. Sigma 35-80 / 4-5.6 have depth of field scale
  8. Sigma 35-80 / 4-5.6 has a tag for working in the infrared spectrum
  9. Compared to most whale lenses, the Sigma 35-80 / 4-5.6 uses a more convenient focus ring.
  10. In the focal length range of 35-55 mm, the Sigma 35-80 / 4-5.6 is slightly brighter than the whale lens
  11. Better functioning hood due to the '80 -35 'feature and the fact that it attaches to the non-retractable body frame
  12. During focal length changes, the rear lens of the Sigma 35-80 / 4-5.6 remains stationary, unlike the movable lens of whale lenses

Please note that the camera Nikon D70s writes the ISO value to EXIF in a non-standard place that is not read by the vast majority of programs to display EXIF. On camera Nikon D70s at 80 / 5.6 in EXIF the value '82 mm F / 6 'is recorded. Therefore, when viewing EXIF Downloaded photos can be confused.

Tricks

To squeeze at least something out of this lens, I used the following tricks:

  1. often used 80mm focal length, which allows you to 'squeeze' the perspective and make the picture more interesting
  2. almost always use the maximum aperture to shoot at low ISO, as the camera Nikon D70s already very weak after ISO 400
  3. where there was too little light - I used a focal length of 35 mm and an aperture of f / 4, which allowed me to win 1 stop in shutter speed Compared to 80 mm focal length and F / 5.6
  4. For more or less expressive photographs, I used close and medium focusing distances, this made it possible to achieve a clear zone of sharpness and blur
  5. I used manual focusing for shooting small objects, set the focusing distance ring to the MDF value, this allowed me to immediately get the maximum magnification factor. In this mode, for focusing, I pushed or pushed the camera to the subject
  6. problems with backlight can be turned into an artistic addition to photographs (glare, etc. used for creative purposes)
  7. some photos were shot using a Hoya 52mm SKYLIGHT (1B) JAPAN 'warm' filter
  8. some photographs were taken using a polarizing filter GREEN.L CPL 52mm
  9. some photographs were taken with the simultaneous use of a Hoya 52mm SKYLIGHT (1B) JAPAN filter and a polarizing filter GREEN.L CPL 52mm
  10. optimally used the capabilities of the camera Nikon D70s (only hardcore!) central focus point, tracking focus, single point focus mode, dancing with a tambourine for white balance, noise reduction function for ISO 400 (although the Nikon D70s does not have such a function, but there is a trick), bracketing white balance и exposure etc.
  11. used processing - with the help of Adobe Photoshop from original JPEG files (not even from RAW) I tried to pull sharpness, color and cropping by the ears

SIGMA DL ZOOM 35-80mm 1: 4-5.6 MULTI-COATED

My experience

With the Sigma 35-80 / 4-5.6, everything is simple - it is a faceless standard lens for film cameras, which is inconvenient on Nikon DX cameras due to EGF. At the same time, Sigma 35-80 / 4-5.6 on Nikon DX cameras can be a good street all-rounder (shooting outdoors and open spaces). For Nikon FX cameras, it is too 'simple'.

Sigma 35-80 / 4-5.6 can serve as an anti-crisis solution for thosewho wants to have a universal autofocus lens.

They do not particularly enjoy shooting, the result is mediocre.

I bought the Sigma 35-80 / 4-5.6 specifically in order to see if it is realistic with my skills to draw an acceptable picture from it and to confirm the fact that technology is not as important as the skills of the photographer. To aggravate the situation, I bought the same weak Nikon D70s to the already weak Sigma. Initially, it was generally planned to buy Nikon D1 / D1h, but finding them in working order turned out to be a difficult task, especially since the 'ones' cost several times more expensive than the old Nikon D70s.

It was originally planned to shoot a small wedding with this kit and show the result to the public here, but at the last moment everything went wrong.

In general, Sigma 35-80 / 4-5.6 will be better Canon Zoom Lens EF 28-80mm 1: 3.5-5.6 II (the same, one of the 'weakest' autofocus lenses I've ever shot).

Of course, while the Sigma 35-80 / 4-5.6 is one of the cheapest autofocus lenses (the cheapest I could find!), It is not the worst. For the next similar test, I chose an even tougher option - whale Canon 18-55 first version.

After testing this 'old school' and 'hardcore' lens, I can again state that photographer skills above technology.

Results

Sigma 35-80 / 4-5.6 is optically and functionally weak, which, as a matter of fact, was expected to be seen, starting to review such a lens.

Advantages

  1. very low cost, one of the cheapest AF lenses in the aftermarket
  2. compact size, light weight
  3. while changing the focal length, the rear lens remains stationary
  4. suitable for full-length cameras
  5. fast auto focus
  6. quite convenient manual focus
  7. small standard diameter of the front filter
  8. good assembly: there is no self-extension of the trunk, zoom and focusing rings are rubberized, metal mount, bayonet type hood
  9. presence of aperture ring, depth of field scale, focusing distance window, tags for working in the IR spectrum
  10. moderate distortion and moderate chromatic aberrationlow vignetting on Nikon DX cameras
  11. small MDF
  12. no focus shift
  13. the direction of rotation of the zoom ring and focus coincides with the original lens Nikon AF Nikkor 35-80mm 1: 4-5.6D
  14. fairly smooth blur discs at aperture values up to F / 8.0

Disadvantages:

  1. very small zoom ratio, which is only 2.3 X. There are cheap lenses with a range of focal lengths of 35-70 mm, the zoom ratio of which is even lower and is only 2 X, but usually they have a larger aperture (3.5-4.5) and cost a little more than the hero of this review.
  2. low aperture. The maximum aperture at 35 mm of the focal length (at the wide end) is only 1: 4, which is a third of the stop worse than the classic F / 3.5 value, which is used by most cheap zoom lenses
  3. 7 non-rounded aperture blades that, at F / 10-F / 22 (32), create a hole in the shape of a 7-gon
  4. at the wide end, the lens has only 35 mm of focal length, which is the extreme value for wide-angle optics for full-format cameras. On cropped cameras, 35 mm turns into 52.5 mm, which is the standard focal length.
  5. lack of a built-in focus motor, which limits its use with amateur Nikon DX series cameras
  6. noisy auto focus due to the lack of a modern quiet focus motor
  7. the lens does not transmit the focus distance to the camera
  8. the lack of focal lengths on the zoom ring, the absence of aperture values on the aperture ring
  9. '80 -35 'design (max trunk length 35mm)
  10. rotation of the front lens and the frame for the filters during focusing, in addition, the trunk of the lens also goes forward (inconvenience when using polarists and other specific filters)
  11. small effect of 'Focus Breathing' (changes in viewing angle during focusing)
  12. slight backlash of the focus ring
  13. poor image quality: poor sharpness, very poor back and side light
  14. there may be incompatibility with some cameras and / or teleconverters (no exact data). For example, errors in the correct entry in EXIF '82 mm f / 6 'when used on a Nikon D70s
  15. lack of data about the lens in modern cameras, which makes it difficult to automatically correct some types of distortion (distortion etc.)

Sigma 35-80 / 4-5.6 can be a challenge to a modern photographer, accustomed to shooting with good technique. If a photographer can give a stable high-quality result on Sigma 35-80 / 4-5.6, then he can make good shots with any other technique.

    Thanks for the review, Arkady!

    Thinking about buying))))

    • Arkady Shapoval

      I sold d70s with this lens for 2500 UAH (about $ 100)

      • Dmitriy

Well, I don’t plan to switch to Nikons, but the Sigma of those years does not work on the digital Canons, alas.

      • Ivan

If I don’t hesitate, Arkady, in 2016 you had a D70 that you’ll sell. In 2017, we bought D70s, which ... also sold. It turns out that you already knew the model, and it turns out that you took it only for this test, or were there any other motives?

        • Arkady Shapoval

Only for review / for yourself. It’s really difficult to work with such a camera.

  • Andrey

where there was too little light - used focal
    Typo times
And 2 - add d7500 to the list of cameras without a motor - it is not there

    Perky review and idea))

    • Arkady Shapoval

      У D7500 there is a motor.
      The rest is Fixed.

  • Oleg

Maybe still without such extremes, nikkor 28-80 costs up to 1000 UAH, it seems like a pretty good lens, if you need a budget zoom within such focal limits. And the Nikon D70s is a pretty good buy. The case when the lowest price does not at all mean the worst quality.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Without extremes, not a bit is not interesting.

      • Oleg

Then I propose to make a series as in drtv: testing a professional photographer with a cheap camera. An old mobile phone, a 1,3 MP digital camera or so, or full hardcore, old mini-cameras without a display, so you don’t even see what you are shooting. In parallel with the video review, it will be interesting to read and see. You can even throw a challenge, so that readers are connected to the test.

        • Arkady Shapoval

drtv used things as a "bad" technique, many times better than this sigma and d70s. And it is unpleasant to shoot with soap dishes / mobile phones.

          • Vladimir

They somehow shot on a children's toy 0.3 MP or 1.3.

          • Pokekmon

As a hardcore, I can suggest looking for a film Nikon F55 with a plastic lens mount and a whale NIKKOR 28-80 mm 1: 3.3-5.6 G.
In Russia, on Avito such a set sometimes costs less than $ 50 in good condition.

            • Arkady Shapoval

I had an older, one of the first autofocus cameras - Nikon AF N8008s https://radojuva.com/2014/06/nikon-af-n8008s-beautiful-summery-vibes/

              • Pokekmon

                Precisely forgotten)
PS Arkady, recently bought an old Sigma for about $ 90 - a 1994 model 70-210 / f3.5-4.5 APO Macro. I wanted to ask - did you manage to take a picture on this glass?

              • Pokekmon

I just did not see a review of this glass on your site and took it at your own peril and risk.
It’s kind of dumb to take old glasses now without a review on a joy-show :-)

              • Maksim

The 70-210mm of 1994 is not just APO (it's 1986), but APO Macro. A shorter, but faster analogue of the 70-300 APO Macro.

  • Vladimir

And how much did you buy this lens? 500 UAH?

    • anonym

Such things very often give to the load on the camera, instead of the bayonet shouting

  • Michael R.

Arkady, why did they sell the D 70S?
You wrote earlier that you were going to take it with you on vacation.
By the results did not live up to expectations?
Then on which camera on the SSD matrix did you stop for yourself?
    D 40?

    • Arkady Shapoval

I also took him on vacation. From CCD - s5pro / s3pro, d40, I wrote about this for a long time.

A brief comparison with kit lenses of class 18-55, point 3 - contradict ourselves - Sigma 35-80 / 4-5.6 has a focal length at the long end of 80 mm, instead of 55 mm for kit lenses (almost 1.5 times longer) ... On the short 35-80 y * in the same angle with any camera ff or crop ... on the crop it is 52 with a spear - 120 on ff 35-80 ... 18-55 on the crop we round up to 28-80 despite the fact that it is not designed for ff. Well, if we describe 35-80 and 18-55 in a pair for a crop, then we multiply both by a poltorashku and compare the resulting wide and long ends. And then confusion.

    • Arkady Shapoval

When using Sigma 35-80 EGF on the Nikon D70s camera is 52,5-120 mm
When using Nikon 18-55 EGF on the Nikon D70s camera is 27-82,5 mm
      120 / 82.5 = 1.454545 = 1.5 the same if 80/55 = 1.454545 = 1.5
No contradictions, I indicated that we are comparing at the long end.

Nevertheless, if we don’t bother with a wide angle for shooting landscape and architecture, we have: a 35mm tall portrait against the background of something, an 80mm waist portrait against the background of something with a slight blur of distant objects, it’s not always necessary to blur it in the trash, although 35mm for shooting a laconic landscape or street photo is a good fit

Thank you, Arkady. The lens is really mediocre and the skills are great. If I had a crop carcass without a lens and the need to buy a cheaper lens, I would still prefer the whale 18-55, since 80 mm, of course, looks tempting, but the cut-off wide angle will be more lacking. And once again looking at this lens, the junk prices were amazed at their spread - some ask for it simply inadequate amount.

I conducted a similar hardcore, only with the D80 and filmed a report from the Ukrainian Drift Championship at the Chaika airfield. I will say right away that the camera did not upset, even in conjunction with tamron 70-210
    I even had enough buffer)

    • Valentine

The D80 is not yet “hardcore”, as even Nikon's brand new amateur cameras do not surpass it in a number of key characteristics. For example, the D80 has an 11-point focusing module, 420-pixel metering, etc. It has good ergonomics, a working quite comfortable main display, as much as 10 megapixels, an honest ISO 100 and a large bright viewfinder. Shooting with the D80 is convenient and enjoyable, especially when shooting in sufficient lighting when the ISO does not need to be raised too much. Commercial photographers, of course, gave up on the D80 a long time ago, but for non-commercial purposes it will last for many years.

      • Andrei

No, it was hardcore, Nikon had a system of 39 points for the younger ones, + dynamic, not poor 11 and in fact work only on the central one, small continuous shooting - 2.5 frames / sec (and not at least 4-5) ... shoot motorsport is not flowers or portraits
I understand that the canon in 6d and 60d put the same autofocus system a couple of years ago, to be honest - a mockery

        • Valentine

On the last junior D3300 and D3400 only 11 focus points and the same 3 frames per second. However, it does not follow from this that it is possible to work only with a central point.
In normal daytime shooting, where the aperture can be closed at least until F8-11, even shooting aircraft is not particularly difficult.

          • Arkady Shapoval

            3300 and 3400 shoot 5 fps

            • Valentine

Yes, sorry, the D3300 / D3400 is a little faster than I wrote. It seems to me, the worse for them, since they fill up their small buffer in a little less than 2 seconds.

              • Ivan

In short, we leave 40ku for a fat pixel at 6 megs 80k for the soul - I also like the infection, I can't say anything, and Nikon D850 FOR EVERYTHING ELSE. And no compromise garbage 3xxx 5xxx 7xxx!

              • Valentine

Ivan, he appreciated the jokes ... And about the fat pixel on the D40 (the main thing is to give us fatter, and you don't need to look at the real characteristics of the matrix), and about the compromise garbage D3xxx-D7xxx, made for different needs and different wallets. And about the D850, which I did not see live, but I saw a commercial photographer with the D800, who always shot one central point, only in M mode, with a 1.8D lens - that was real uncompromising.

              • Ivan

And by the way, I look mainly at the disassembled objects that I systematically twist for myself. Matrices are somehow not mine, I'm not an electronics engineer. About the fact that the professional will remove the image on the whale at 6mp and the layman at the last top under 50mp and port under 1.0 daub, and so the hedgehog is understandable. For creativity, talents are more important than julez. Well, for me.

              • Ivan

No jokes. 850 on the order already floats the rest like that. And who is there than filming vkusovschina generally shit. Sincerely.

  • John

Great low-key photo! My respect to the author.

  • dragon yes not snape

I do not quite understand what is hardcore in this lens. The set is quite normal for an amateur. For a professional, it will certainly not work. The technique is of course old but quite civilized. This is not a Chinese camera "sharp shots". Naturally, the result was quite civil.

    • Valentine

The result came out civilized thanks to the experience and skills of Arkady + “I used processing - with the help of Adobe Photoshop, I tried to pull sharpness, color and cropping from the original JPEG files (not even from RAW)”. The quality of the lens is at the level of the kit +/-.

      • Maksim

The most important thing is not written. How much did the lens cost?

        • Ivan

10ue plus minus but not more than 20ti. This garbage should not cost more in theory

  • Ivan

and under the canon system I managed to buy a tamron 28-75 2,8
exactly that day the dollar took off, and the seller did not rush to change the price tag)))

  • Werty1308

the delight of your photos and work
In fact, they proved that technology doesn’t solve everything in interesting photographs.
This material is recommended for those who want to take pictures and choose a technique (body & glass), which is more expensive, the better. Yes, when shooting, it is more convenient to photograph with expensive equipment, but again, the main thing is the head and the ability to photograph, create, etc.
