Yongnuo 100/2 for Canon EOS cameras first appeared on the official website on October 31, 2016.

Yongnuo YN 100mm f / 2 lens
Assembly
The lens came to the review completely new.
In a small box is a warranty card, instructions in Chinese and English, and the lens itself with a front (YN-58) and a back cover. The box is made in the colors typical of the golden boxes of Nikon Nikkor lenses.
The lens is well assembled. Yongnuo 100/2 has a metal mount mount. The focus ring is rubberized. It is stated that the contacts of the microcircuits are gold-plated to improve the passage of current.
The diaphragm consists of 9 petals and form a hole in the shape of an irregular hexagon, while in the photographs in the blur zone, rather round discs of blur appear.
Among the drawbacks of the assembly, I want to highlight the following trifles:
- no hood and bag for transportation included
- the manual recommends using a Canon ET-65III lens hood, which in the original version is not so cheap. True, I'm sure Chinese counterparts not a bit worse.
- the inscription YN100mm F2 is not centered (there are lenses where done in the center)
- the edge of the scale is visible on the focus distance scale when the focus reaches 0.9 m (view)
- reliably is knownthat some YN100mm F2 lenses lose contact with the camera Canon EOS 5D Mark III

Focusing
The lens uses focus micro motor and is an analog of Canon MM (Micro Motor). Focus speed averagesignificantly lower than the original lens Canon Lens EF 100mm 1: 2 Ultrasonic. Auto Focus will work with any Canon EOS SLR camera. Auto focus a little noisy.
I worked with the lens on the camera Canon Digital Rebel T1i (aka Canon EOS 500D, aka Canon Kiss Digital X3) with very simple 9-point focusing system) Focusing low, lens often mistaken. Important: I met camera users with a more advanced focusing system with which the Yongnuo 100/2 behaves well. Therefore, with other cameras, the lens can behave much better. It is authentically known that the Yongnuo 100/2 focuses well on the camera Canon EOS 5D Mark II.
The focus ring is rubberized and rotates approximately 90 degrees in manual focus mode. When extreme positions are reached, the ring abuts. The focus distance scale rotates in the opposite direction of the focus ring rotation. Manual focus is quite convenient. During manual focusing, one can hear 'plastic rubbing against plastic', while the ring rotates smoothly and is quite pleasant. There is a 'AF-MF' (auto focus / manual focus) mode switch on the lens body. Switch positions are swapped compared to the original Canon Lens EF 100mm 1: 2 Ultrasonic ('AF-MF' <-> 'MF-AF'). During autofocus, the focus ring remains stationary and can be freely rotated 360 degrees without affecting focus.
Lens has internal focus, the front and rear lenses remain stationary during focusing. It is possible to use various filters without any problems.
The closest focusing distance is only 90 cm, while the maximum magnification for macro photography is 1: 7.2 (weak).
Important: Yongnuo 100/2 - a lens from a third-party manufacturer. It may happen that it will not work correctly with some Canon cameras.
Focus Features:
- on the camera Canon Digital Rebel T1i (aka Canon EOS 500D, aka Canon Kiss Digital X3) this lens does not focus correctly, either focuses very, very long, or focuses inaccurately in Live View mode. I saw the same trouble with the camera Canon EOS DIGITAL 450D (aka Canon EOS DIGITAL REBEL XSi, aka Canon EOS Kiss X2) and lens Yongnuo Lens EF 50mm 1: 1.8 (Model YN50mm F1.8).
- the lens sometimes continues to focus (drives the lens all the way, i.e., to the MDF or to infinity) after the focus activation button has been depressed (usually by half-pressing the shutter button). This happens if the lens is not focused accurately enough (the lens somehow continues to focus when the focus button has already been released). Not everyone will notice this feature and it does not particularly interfere with comfortable work with the lens.
- the lens has a window with a focus distance scale in meters and feet, the scale is very meager and has values only for 0.9, 1.2, 2, 5 meters and an infinity mark.
- Yongnuo 100 / 2 does not have a hard stop (hard infinity mechanical stop) which allows you to accurately and quickly focus the lens to infinity under any external temperature conditions. For accurate aiming at infinity, you cannot just bring the focus ring to its extreme position.
- Focus shift (shift-focus) is missing.
- Compatibility with converters is unknown. Most likely, there should not be any problems.
- The lens is present strong 'Focus Breathing' effect (changing the viewing angle during focusing), while focusing toward the MDF, the viewing angle decreases.
In general, autofocus is the weak point of this lens.
Yongnuo YN 100mm f / 2 lens
Image quality
Overall, the lens performed 'below average' results.
In terms of sharpness, the lens is quite weak at F / 2.0 even in the center of the frame. True, nevertheless, for some photo tasks, sharpness on F / 2.0 will be acceptable (portrait shooting and publication of pictures on social networks with downsize). A significant increase in sharpness occurs at F / 2.5, at F / 2.8 in the center of the frame there are no complaints about the lens. Better sharpness is obtained at aperture values of F / 5.6-F / 8.0.
On F / 2.0 there are quite noticeable chromatic aberration. The vignetting on the APS-C cameras is almost imperceptible. Also, distortion is low.
Yongnuo 100/2 is considered a portrait lens, for which the transfer of the out-of-focus area is important - the bokeh of the lens is neutral, unremarkable, and quite pleasant. With a 100mm focal length to f / 2.0 ratio, you can easily control depth of field and blur the far / foreground.
Real indicators of aperture (T-feet) are quite large, and are within the framework of T / 2.2-T / 2.5. Happy for normal exposure I used the maximum capabilities of the camera with ISO 100, 1/4000 s, and I had to close the aperture to F / 2.5.

My experience
A 100/2 class lens is already a fairly serious technique, it would be great if the Yongnuo YN 100mm f / 2 functioned no worse than the original Canon EF 100 / 2 USM. But so far, no miracle has happened.
The lens could be forgiven for one shortcoming, but two shortcomings at once: poor focusing and poor image quality at F / 2.0 - it is much more difficult to forgive. Of the advantages of the Yongnuo YN 100mm f / 2, I can only highlight the low cost and the halo of the almost legendary Canon EF 100 / 2 USM.
100 mm focal length with huge aperture F / 2.0 could do wonders. Perhaps I didn’t have the most successful copy of the Yongnuo YN 100mm f / 2 on my review.
Version Yongnuo YN 100mm f / 2 for Nikon devoid of serious focusing problems, but has other problems with exposure.

Results
All in all, Yongnuo 100/2 on camera Canon 500D turned out to be enough is weakprimarily due to poor auto focus and poor sharpness on F / 2.0. At the same time, in conclusion, I want to note the fact that with more modern cameras that use more advanced phase focusing systems, the Yongnuo 100/2 can behave well. Most likely, the Yongnuo 100/2 firmware works correctly only with some cameras, the exact list of which is unknown. I met similar focusing system behavior with the lens Yongnuo Lens EF 50mm 1: 1.8 (YN50mm F1.8) which on Canon 5Dsr worked perfectly, but on Canon 450D/40D/30D had similar problems. For many photo tasks, F / 2.0 is not always needed, but on F / 2.8 it is a very good lens with normal optical performance.

I wonder how the lens firmware can affect the quality of focus? The lens is just an actuator (motor and lenses), which is controlled by the camera. Discriminators are focus sensors. I, too, at one time fell for the price of these funny rogues - the Yong 35-ka on the 700-ke is just as unreliable in focusing, and in general, not very interesting.
As for the Jong 100, when it gets into focus with sharpness at f2 everything seemed to be very good there. At least on the EOS 1D Mk2N. Although there that vaunted single autofocus I did not notice something, so I sinned both on the camera and on the lens, which is why both were shamelessly sold.
