In short

The Tamron 18-270 / 3.5-6.3 VC PZD is a classic super zoom for cropped DSLR cameras. It attracts with its built-in stabilizer and 15x zoom. Repels low aperture and uncertain focus.

This lens was the first to use a PZD focusing motor. At the time of the introduction of Tamron 18-270 / 3.5-6.3, the VC PZD was the lightest and most compact super-hyper-mega-zoom with a similar set of focal lengths.

In general, the Tamron 18-270 / 3.5-6.3 VC PZD is significantly worse than Tamron B016.

Most likely due to the cooperation of Tamron and Pentax, the Tamron 18-270 / 3.5-6.3 VC PZD lens was redesigned, after which it was born SMC Pentax-DA 1: 3.5-6.3 18-270mm ED SDM. Most likely, the latter was manufactured by Tamron for Pentax (I have no exact data).

Tamron Di II 18-270mm F / 3.5-6.3 VC Piezo Drive B008

Assembly

Tamron 18-270 / 3.5-6.3 VC PZD has metal bayonet. The insides of the lens, as far as can be judged from the view from the rear lens, are made of plastic. The zoom ring is rubberized, wide and pleasant to use. The retractable body frame (trunk) consists of two plastic sections. The focusing ring is also rubberized.

The lens is made in China. Despite the huge zoom ratio, the Tamron 18-270 / 3.5-6.3 VC PZD has a fairly compact size and light weight. Overall, touch, lens not well assembled (but not good).

There is a bayonet mount mark and a mark on the case for quick installation of the hood. The lens uses a plastic lens Tamron DA18 Japan, which is fixed in special grooves located near the front lens of the lens. The hood can be installed in the opposite direction for transportation. In this position, access to the focus ring in the range of 18-35 mm is a little difficult. When you change the focal length, the lens hood moves with the front of the lens. Due to the huge spread in focal lengths, the lens hood is maximally effective at 18 mm of focal length and practically ineffective in the range of 100-270 mm.

When changing the focal length, the rear lens moves in the middle of the lens body like a pump - it draws in and pushes out air. This behavior of the rear lens is called 'vacuum cleaner effect', which can increase the amount of dust that accumulates in the camera.

The lens suffers from spontaneous change in focal length under its own weight. Tamron 18-270 / 3.5-6.3 VC PZD is equipped with a special 'LOCK' to prevent this ailment.

Lock 'LOCK ′ (ZL - ZOOM LOCK)

Frame (trunk) for Tamron 18-270 / 3.5-6.3 VC PZD spontaneously changes its size under its own weight. Perhaps such an unpleasant phenomenon begins only with time. This problem with Tamron 18-270 / 3.5-6.3 VC PZD is very pronounced. To avoid this, there is a focal length lock 'LOCK' (the so-called 'zoom lock') on the lens body, which tightly locks focal length at a value of 18 mm.

To fix the trunk of the lens, you must first set 18 mm focal length. In the fixed value, a red bar is visible near the button.

The switch is conveniently located under the index finger of your right hand. It is very easy to 'remove the lens from the lock' before shooting.

Tamron Di II 18-270mm F / 3.5-6.3 VC Piezo Drive B008

Stabilizer

Tamron 18-270 / 3.5-6.3 VC PZD can use the built-in image stabilizer. The stabilization function is only inherent in lenses for Canon and Nikon, for Sony cameras the lens is available without a stabilizer.

The lens has a 'VC ON / OFF' switch. The stabilizer is quiet enough.

According to the instructions, the stabilizer can compensate 4 steps by shutter speed. In values excerpts this means that you can shoot at shutter speeds 16 times longer than what a lens without a stabilizer requires. In practice, the stabilizer can compensate up to 3 steps in shutter speed. I was shooting at 270 mm focal length and 1/60 second without any problems. If you try, you can take a good picture even for 1/30 second and 270 mm of focal length. Generally, the stabilizer works well.

Nowhere is it indicated whether the stabilizer can track the movement of the lens during panoramic shooting. Tamron 18-270 / 3.5-6.3 VC PZD has no choice of stabilization modes.

It is stated that the stabilizer, compared with the previous model Tamron B003, was completely redesigned, which allowed to increase its efficiency and reduce the size of the lens. In practice, I did not feel any significant increase in the efficiency of the stabilizer between the models Tamron B003 and Tamron B008.

Tamron Di II 18-270mm F / 3.5-6.3 VC Piezo Drive B008

Focusing

To focus, the lens uses a special piezo ultrasonic focusing motor 'PZD' (PieZo Drive). it first lens from Tamron, which uses a similar focus motor. How the PZD motor works here.

The noise level from the engine is very low. During focusing, the focusing system may crackle and hum a little.

When used on a camera Canon EOS Digital Rebel XSi (aka Canon EOS DIGITAL 450D, aka Canon EOS Kiss) from simple 9-point focusing system the lens sometimes refocused during operation in the range of 70-300 mm (poor focus tenacity). In conditions with poor lighting, auto focus often lost objects from view, and the lens constantly fidgeted in search of focus. The lens focuses poorly using only the extreme lateral focus points.

I had no particular problems with focus accuracy. On camera Canon EOS Digital Rebel XSi I checked the presence of the back and focus front at different focusing distances and different values of the focal length (infinity and MDF as well). The shots taken using the Live View mode (which theoretically does not suffer from back / front focus) were used as a measure. Focusing accuracy using the central cross-shaped phase sensor completely coincided with the Live View mode.

Auto focus speed low (closer to average). Focus speed is highly dependent on the selected focal length. As the focal length increases, the focusing speed decreases. Focusing time from infinity to MDF and back at 270 mm of focal length takes about 3 seconds.

Focus on Tamron 18-270 / 3.5-6.3 VC PZD internal - when focusing, neither the front nor the rear lens rotates, and the lens itself does not change its size when focusing. Using polarizing and other specialized filters will not be difficult.

The minimum focusing distance is only 49 cm (the distance from the camera’s matrix to the subject). With such an MDF, the maximum magnification ratio is 1: 3.8. Thus, the lens allows you to shoot amateur 'close'. Previous lens version B003 could shoot with a maximum ratio of 1: 3.5 (better than 1: 3.8), and her name had the inscription 'Macro'.

Tamron 16-300 / 3.5-6.3 has focus mode switch 'AF / MF'. To perform manual focusing, the lens must be set to 'MF' focus mode. Unfortunately, the lens cannot use FTM (Full Time Manual Focusing) - the ability to continuously manually control focus while using 'AF' mode. FTM mode appeared only on the model Tamron B016.

During auto focus focus ring rotates and cannot be touched... In manual focus mode, the focus ring rotates approximately 45 degrees. When the end positions are reached, the focusing ring stops. Manual aiming is not comfortable. During manual focusing, the movement of the 'head on head' is clearly felt.

The effect of F / 6.3 on focus

The manual for most Canon cameras specifies the threshold for the maximum relative lens aperture with which correct auto focus will be available. Most Canon cameras are designed for lenses only. no darker than f / 5.6. For example, camera Canon EOS Digital Rebel XSi (aka Canon EOS DIGITAL 450D, aka Canon EOS Kiss), with which test shots were taken, theoretically should not work correctly with this lens. But still, as my practice has shown, in conditions with good lighting there are no special problems with automatic focusing even on cameras that are not designed to work with lenses with F / 6.3. Tamron 18-270 / 3.5-6.3 VC PZD goes beyond F / 5.6 at a focal length of 155 mm (!), At this value the maximum relative aperture is already 1: 6.3.

At the time of this writing, there were only four Canon cameras with APS-C sensor and the ability to focus without problems using a conventional phase focusing module with lenses darker than F / 5.6: Canon EOS 7D Mark II, Canon EOS 80D, Canon EOS 77D, Canon EOS 800D.

In Live View, the F / 6.3 limitation also applies to Hybrid CMOS AF, Hybrid CMOS AF II and Hybrid CMOS AF III. At F> 5.6, normal contrast slow focusing should be activated instead of focusing with Hybrid CMOS AF / II / III.

In Live View, the Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology is not sensitive to the F / 6.3 limit, as it can work with a maximum relative aperture up to F / 11.

More Useful Information About Camera Focus Sensors Canon EOS will find here.

Small relative aperture - one of the main reasons for focus misses and 'jerking' the focus with this lens.

At the time I wrote this review, there was only one super zoom with a similar zoom ratio that uses F / 5.6 at its long end - this Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 18-300mm 1: 3.5-5.6G ED SWM VR IF Aspherical. Unfortunately, Tamron does its super-zoom for SLR cameras with only F / 6.3 at the long end.

Tamron Di II 18-270mm F / 3.5-6.3 VC Piezo Drive B008

Tamron Di II 18-270mm F / 3.5-6.3 VC Piezo Drive B008

Other focusing features

  • The lens has a very pronounced 'Focus Breathing' effect (changing the viewing angle during focusing). When focusing on MDF at 270 mm focal length, effective focal length equals approximately 150-200 mm. This can be frustrating when the telephoto starts to 'shrink' when shooting at close focusing distances. Many telephoto lenses that do not use internal focusing work the other way around - they decrease the angle of view (increase the effective focal length) while focusing towards the MDF, which is much more convenient for most situations.
  • The lens has a distance scale with marks in meters and feet. The scale is small, on it there are marks only for 7, 3, 1, 0.49 meters and a label of 'infinity'. Such a scale in itself is of little use and is present more for show.
  • At 270 mm of the focal length, while focusing on the MDF, the distance from the front lens of the lens to the subject is about 20 cm.
  • If you use the change step exposureequal to 1/2 (half stop), then the camera Canon EOS Digital Rebel XSi (aka Canon EOS DIGITAL 450D, aka Canon EOS Kiss), possibly many others, will show a maximum relative aperture in the range of 70-270 mm, equal to 1: 5.6. Most likely these are the firmware features of the lens microprocessor and / or the features of working with some cameras.
  • When changing the focal length, focusing is lost. The lens is by no means parfocal.
  • When changing the focal length, the front lens together with the threads for the filter do not rotate.
  • Tamron 18-270 / 3.5-6.3 VC PZD has no focus problems in Live View.
  • Unknown compatibility with teleconverters and original adapter Canon EF - EOS M.
  • Tamron 18-270 / 3.5-6.3 VC PZD does not have hard stop (hard infinity mechanical stop) which allows you to accurately and quickly focus the lens to infinity under any external conditions. In the telephoto range, the focusing ring has an infinity flight (inexperienced users reading this review - calm down, everything is in order, this is not a bug, this is a feature).
  • There is no depth of field scale and labels for working in the infrared spectrum.
  • Tamron 18-270 / 3.5-6.3 VC PZD is a third-party lens. It may happen that it will not work correctly with new Canon cameras, which will be presented after the announcement of this lens.

Image quality

The optical scheme of the lens contains a large number of special optical elements that make the lens light and compact, but, unfortunately, good image quality cannot be maintained.

The main advantages of the created image:

  • good contrast over the entire range of focal lengths
  • good sharpness in the center of the frame on open apertures in the range of 18-70 mm
  • backlit tolerant work
  • good color rendering
  • even circles in the blur zone due to rounded petals aperture
  • good macro mode

The main disadvantages of the image:

  • strong distortion 18 mm small distortion over the entire range of focal lengths
  • very weak, catastrophically low sharpness at the edges and corners of the image at almost all focal lengths, maybe I didn’t have the most successful copy in the review
  • weak (but tolerable) sharpness on open apertures in the range of 70-270 mm in the center of the frame
  • aperture slightly improves the situation with detail in the corners and edges of the frame
  • a large number of chromatic aberrations in the television range, especially at the edges and corners of the image
  • simple, not interesting hips

Optimum image quality is achieved at F / 9-F / 13 and medium focusing distances. The best sharpness is observed at 18 mm in the center of the frame on covered apertures.

Version Tamron B016 optically much better than the Tamron B008.

My experience

Sigma Zoom DC 18-250mm 1: 3.5-6.3 HSM OS I liked a lot more than the Tamron B008.

Slow and sometimes uncertain focus with the Tamron B008 makes the shooting process uncomfortable.

Such a lens is perfect for simple photo tasks, for example, for vacation, travel, street photography, etc. Where there is a lot of light, Tamron B008 will be a very convenient tool in the hands of a beginner and amateur.

With Tamron 18-270 / 3.5-6.3 VC PZD, as with other low-cost super-zooms, you have to choose between convenience and image quality.

Main advantages

  • 15x zoom
  • built-in image stabilizer
  • good build quality, metal bayonet mount, rubberized focus and zoom rings, lens hood included
  • compact size, light weight, small diameter of light filters
  • good maximum magnification ratio for macro photography, which is 1: 3.8
  • 7 rounded petals aperture, the lens creates fairly smooth blur discs
  • internal focus
  • fairly quiet focus
  • lock for fixing the lens in position 18 mm
  • awards at world exhibitions (EISA, etc.)

The main disadvantages

  • low aperture (the maximum relative aperture in the range of 155-270 mm is only 1: 6.3)
  • slow auto focus (the beautiful Piezo Drive lettering only helps make the lens more compact and quiet)
  • periodic (not systematic) focusing errors with the camera Canon EOS DIGITAL 450Dmost likely due to low aperture and focus module features
  • rotation of the focus ring during autofocus and, as a result, lack of the function of constant manual focus control
  • inconvenient manual focus due to the small stroke of the focus ring
  • focusing accuracy is lost while changing the focal length
  • the zoom and focus ring rotates in the opposite direction (inconvenience for those who have original Canon zoom lenses)
  • movement of the rear lens while changing the focal length, strong effect of a vacuum cleaner / air pump
  • independent and very sharp change in focal length under its own weight (perhaps the problem begins with age)
  • lack of a protective O-ring near the mount and the absence of any dust and moisture protection
  • lack of stabilizer operating modes
  • very strong 'Focus Breathing' effect (changing the viewing angle during focusing)
  • there may be incompatibility with some cameras and / or teleconverters (no exact data)
  • a strong drop in resolution with increasing focal length
  • mediocre image quality, the main drawback is very weak sharpness and very strong chromatic aberration at the corners and edges of the frame, maybe not a very successful version of the lens that I had on the test
  • lack of data about the lens in modern cameras, which makes it difficult to automatically correct some types of distortion (distortion, etc.)

Great lens overall. Taking into account the ratio of price and a set of focal lengths. I never understood why superzums are scolded. They have an obvious set of advantages and disadvantages. Even the expensive Canon 28-300lis is not ideal in terms of the picture, which can be expected from small and inexpensive third-party lenses. In some cases, superzoom is optimal on a DSLR. I myself am still using the previous version of this lens without an external motor. And in general, the image at f8 is quite satisfactory at almost all focal lengths, except perhaps 250-270mm. Considering the affordable price (especially for used ones), the lens is quite suitable for travel. And yes, having tried 16-300vs, I agree with Arkady - he is much better. And the sizes are ridiculous for a superzoom, and there are more focal lengths, and weather protection, and better focusing. Which year I plan to change :)

Tamron 18-400mm f / 3.5-6.3 Di II VC HLD is coming soon! Then we’ll heal, the zoom threshold is broken 20 times!

      • Pastor

Wow! I have not even heard. Perhaps, if you change, then to him :)

        • Arkady Shapoval

Today the first photos of him have just appeared, the official announcement will be soon.

          • Pastor

In appearance a little more than 16-300vs. It is a pity that they did not leave 16mm at the short end.

            • Arkady Shapoval

At such a pace, it will soon be 15-500 :) (relevant for Canon crop, where 15 mm will be equivalent to 24 mm)

              • Pastor

It would be gorgeous :) 15-500 will definitely cover all the needs of a amateur photographer and a novice reporter. We are on our way to Nikon P900 :)

      • Matthew

Its cost for a crop is 1000 bucks, and for a full frame 750 bucks (in Russia) makes the desire to purchase it very controversial. He expressed his opinion as an amateur amateur))

        • Arkady Shapoval

Desire and cost don't always intersect

  • Aries

very weak lens .. chromatic in all focuses and apertures. even in Rabbi Nave this drawback is very noticeable ..

  • Serg57

I have one. Bought on its versatility and cheapness. On the Nikon d3100 and d200, it’s quite a decent glass for travel and in good light.

Good day. What is the global difference between b003 and b008 other than weight and size. Does it make sense to look for exactly b008? as I understand it, they are almost the same, that there is a piezoelectric motor there, only different stabilizers?

  • kotofei

How does it relate in terms of picture quality (achievable on the SHU preloaded to F6.3) with mass whales:
    Canon 18-138 STM
    Nikon G 18-105
    in equal conditions, essno.

    • BB

The comrade complained about the soap picture 18-270 at a wide angle. I saw those photos, a really soapy picture somewhere up to 50mm. Perhaps the problem is a specific instance.

  • Sergei

Great lens. Just great. Focusing is more accurate and faster than the Kenon 18-135 kit. Stub is also better, straight, noticeably better, holds dead. The picture is much nicer than with 18-135, the colors are different, warmer, and most importantly, the picture is sharper. But you have to work with this lens. We need competent processing. The video from him is also much nicer than from the 18-135 kenon.

  • Sergei

I could not attach a photo in the comment above, now it worked. This is from 18-270 VC PZD CANON

    Here's more from him

    Also he

  • Sergei

And who says he's soapy? Excellent sharpness.

    • Novel

The couple went overboard with a sharp or a gradient to accentuate the cats' faces.

painful to read. too much water and other unnecessary information not related to a particular patient. in the end, just wasted time and a lot of questions

    • Arkady Shapoval

I'm wondering what exactly do you mean by "water" here and what specifically does not refer to "patient" and, for example, what information could you not find? Thanks

      • B. R. P.

Mr. Maclay apparently meant himself under the patient. It hurts him to read, to the optometrist, you see, it is necessary.

  • Fischer, Hans-Dieter

Tamron AF 18-270 mm läßt sich nicht mehr zoomen.
Gerät ist nicht runtergefallen oder anderweitig beschädigt worden.

    Thanks for the help
