In short

Sigma 28-200 / 3.8-5.6 UC is an old, structurally strong super-zoom for full-format film cameras. Functionally very similar to the original Nikon 28-200mm 1: 3.5-5.6D AF Nikkorexcept for lower image quality.

In general terms, the Sigma 28-200 / 3.8-5.6 UC is a classic old man without any special features or capabilities, while it can still delight many users. The main inconvenience when working with the lens is a large minimum focusing distance (MDF) of 28 mm. At 200 mm MDF is 1.5 meters, but at 28 mm MDF is much larger.

Assembly

Build quality Sigma 28-200 / 3.8-5.6 UC is at a good level. The lens uses a metal mount. The retractable frame of the case consists of two sections. Rubberized focus and zoom rings. Aperture ring plastic. The zoom ring rotates 90 degrees without jerking. Housing design inherent to very old Sigma lenses. The body coating, which uses the Sigma 28-200 / 3.8-5.6 UC, overwrites over time, and the lens loses its presentable appearance, but the lens from the review is well preserved.

Frame (trunk) at Sigma 28-200 / 3.8-5.6 UC spontaneously changes its size under its own weight (perhaps this begins only with time). For example, when the camera is tilted down, the trunk of the lens spontaneously lengthens (focal length increases).

Sigma 28-200 / 3.8-5.6 UC uses a tiny plastic lens hood, which is fixed in special grooves located near the front lens of the lens. When changing the focal length, the hood moves with the movable frame of the housing. The hood can be installed in the opposite direction for transportation. I have not seen such a tiny original lens hood.

When changing the focal length, the rear lens moves in the middle of the lens body like a pump - it draws in and pushes out air. This behavior of the rear lens is called 'vacuum cleaner effect', which can increase the amount of dust that accumulates in the camera.

Устройство aperture consists of 7non-rounded petals.

Although the lens bears in its name UC (Ultra-Compact - ultra compact size), in fact, the lens is not so small, which is only a thread for 72 mm filters.

Focusing

Auto focus speed slightly depends on the selected focal length. Focusing speed at 28 mm focal length high, with an increase in focal length, the focus speed decreases slightly.

During focusing, the front lens and the frame for filters spin and drive forward. When changing the focal length, the front lens does not rotate.

The focus ring rotates only 75 degrees. The stroke of the ring is smooth. The minimum focusing distance is 1.5 m per 200 mm. Unfortunately, at 28 mm the minimum distance is about 2 meters.

When used on a camera Nikon D90 (with unpretentious Multi-CAM 1000 focusing system) behaves well, rarely makes mistakes in focusing. Errors often occur at 28mm focal length. Sometimes the lens'twitches'during focusing, but there are no particular focusing problems. On camera Nikon D90 I checked the presence of the back and focus front at different focusing distances and different values of the focal length (infinity and MDF as well). Pictures taken using the Live View mode (which does not suffer from back / front focus) were used as a measure. Focusing accuracy using phase sensors completely coincided with the Live View mode.

It's important: auto focus with this lens is available only when using him on cameras with built-in motor focusing.

Exact list Nikon DSLR cameras without a built-in focus motor, on which this lens will not focus automatically:

Only auto focus and sound confirmation of focus will not work with these cameras, all other important functions, such as automatic exposure metering and automatic iris control, will work well.

You will find a lot of useful information on the types of cameras and lenses Nikon here.

Focus Features:

  1. Sigma 28-200 / 3.8-5.6 UC does not have a focus mode switch. To translate the lens into manual focus on cameras with motor For focusing, use the focus mode switching lever located near the camera mount. For cameras without motor Only manual focus mode will always be available for focusing.
  2. During focusing, the focus ring rotates and must not be touched.
  3. Focus speed may vary slightly from the camera used. This issue has been considered. here.
  4. During focusing, the lens and camera are quite noisy. Noise is heard even during manual focus.
  5. There is the effect of 'Focus Breathing' (changes in viewing angle during focusing).
  6. Sigma 28-200 / 3.8-5.6 UC is a third-party lens. It may happen that it will not work correctly with some Nikon cameras. Details on this issue are considered by me. here.
  7. When changing the focal length, focusing is lost.
  8. Sigma 28-200 / 3.8-5.6 UC transmits the focus distance to the subject in the camera and is a type lens Nikon D.
  9. The lens has a scale with a focusing distance in meters and feet. The scale is small, on it there are marks only for 10, 5, 3, 2, 1.5 meters and a label of 'infinity'. Such a scale in itself is of little use and is present more for show (justification of this thought here) The distance scale is plotted on the focus ring, and not made using a special window.
  10. Sigma 28-200 / 3.8-5.6 UC has no focus problems in Live View (tested on Nikon D90).
  11. Unknown compatibility with teleconverters.
  12. SSigma 28-200 / 3.8-5.6 UC does not have hard stop (hard infinity mechanical stop) which allows you to accurately and quickly focus the lens at infinity under any external conditions.
  13. There is no focus distance limiter. For example, Nikon 28-200mm 1:3.5-5.6G such a limiter has.
  14. The lens has a manual aperture ring. To be able to control the value aperture from camera or for automatic installation aperture on modern central control valves, you need to turn the control ring to F / 22 and fix it with a special switch, which is located to the right of the marks aperture. The F / 22 value and the latch mark are highlighted in orange to align them. If this is not done, then on a number of cameras, the display will display an error - 'fEE' (ring is not installed aperture) Some cameras having diaphragm rheostatallow you to control the aperture using the ring aperturebut only in metering modes exposure 'M' and 'A'. You can read more about this issue in the section on Non-G Lenses. Ring aperture rotates with clicks, the values F / 3.8, 5.6, 8, 11, 16, 22 (full stops) are plotted on it; set an intermediate value between pairs of numbers using the ring aperture impossible. Intermediate values can only be set using the camera menu.

Results

Sigma 28-200 / 3.8-5.6 UC - a lens from the last century for film cameras, it can be a budget universal solution for simple tasks.

Main advantages

  • 7x zoom (for full-length lenses, this is a good indicator)
  • good build quality, metal bayonet mount, rubberized focus and zoom rings, lens hood included
  • the presence of the depth of field scale, a scale from focusing distances, tags for working in the infrared spectrum
  • the presence of the aperture control ring (compatibility with film cameras + convenience for those who shoot video on another system)
  • tolerable sharpness in the center of the frame on open apertures, normal sharpness on covered apertures, low vignetting on Nikon DX cameras, moderate chromatic aberration

The main disadvantages

  • large diameter filters
  • 7 non-rounded aperture blades that, at F / 13-F / 22, create a hole in the shape of an irregular 7-gon
  • understated aperture, the maximum relative aperture per 28 mm is 1: 3.8 instead of the classic 1: 3.5
  • rotation of the front lens and the frame for the filters during focusing (inconvenience when using polarists and other specific filters)
  • noisy auto focus due to the lack of a modern quiet focus motor
  • lack of a built-in focus motor (critical for users of amateur Nikon cameras without a focus motor)
  • rotation of the focus ring during autofocus and, as a result, lack of the function of constant manual focus control
  • inconvenient manual focus due to the small stroke of the focus ring
  • focusing accuracy is lost while changing the focal length
  • the zoom ring rotates in the opposite direction (inconvenience for those who have Nikon's original zoom lenses)
  • movement of the rear lens while changing the focal length, the effect of a vacuum cleaner / air pump
  • independent and very sharp change in focal length under its own weight (perhaps the problem begins with age)
  • strong 'Focus Breathing' effect (changes in viewing angle during focusing)
  • very large minimum focusing distance at 28 mm focal length (inconvenient use at 28 mm)
  • there may be incompatibility with some cameras and / or teleconverters (no exact data)
  • resolution drop with increasing focal length
  • mediocre image quality, the main drawback is the very weak sharpness at the corners and edges of the frame due to coma
  • lack of data about the lens in modern cameras, which makes it difficult to automatically correct some types of distortion (distortion, etc.)

on d200 nikon worked for me on all 5+ no chromatics or aberrations .. the ARS matrix all the flaws of the optics remain behind the scenes .. outside the matrix .. a great buzzer for travel and reporting ... even at 300mm there are no complaints about sharpness. and the price is good up to 16MP provides a matrix resolution lens

Is there a song at 400?

  • Arkady Shapoval

The setting works for all lenses that support focus with this camera. The letter D has nothing to do with the type of focusing. The following designations are responsible for the focusing method for Nikon lenses for SLR cameras: AF, AF-S, AF-I, AF-P, at the time of this writing, there are no other types of original lenses in terms of focusing. Details here - https://radojuva.com/2012/03/nikon-lenses/#af-nikon

    • Serge

I am aware that D is a lens capable of transmitting the distance to the object in focus. But I got the answer, thank you very much

    • Serge

Arkady, in a hurry, wrote, the text above might seem rude. Do not take to heart :). Good luck in your work and the rest. Thanks again.

      • Arkady Shapoval

All ok) often simply combine: AF-D, and the vast majority of D-lenses are AF type, so the concept is often confused.

        • Serge

By the way, do you use or have you used pulsed studio light? If so, which one? In Moscow, for home use, mainly mobile kits from Raylab, Lumifor, etc., more or less available in Internet stores, are available for home use. But it is not clear what, in my opinion, But Elinchrom D-lite kits are not much more expensive, but already a completely different technique level ... And it costs as little as 1-2 pieces Nikon sb-910, depending on the power :)

          • Arkady Shapoval

I use it. Studios usually have normal blocks. For home - only for lightcube 3 cartridge flashes, but 2 of them burned out a month ago.

            • Serge

Let me concoct a review of the Sigma 50mm DG HSM ART ... I am personally delighted with the lens. If it turns out, something worthwhile in your opinion, then we will offer the public ... I'll take a week to work.

              • Arkady Shapoval

                Let's.

  • Sniper

Hello, please tell me if it is suitable for the cameraCanon EOS 750 D

    • B. R. P.

Specifically, this is not suitable, this is for Nikon. There should be a variation for Canon, but you won't have a wide angle on the crop.

  • Michael

What colors! After the d90, I tried different cameras, both DSLRs and mirrorless ones, and came to the conclusion that the d90 is optimal for photography. I consider this time lost. (Several years!) Now I'm back on the d90 and I enjoy the result, no more picking fsh! Unless Fujik xt 3 can compete with him!
