SIGMA ZOOM 24-70mm 1: 2.8 DG EX ASPHERICAL uses a metal mount. The retractable frame ('trunk') consists of 1 section. The trunk is durable, without any backlash and without spontaneous movement. The focus and zoom rings are rubberized.

Important: the focusing ring is narrow enough and is too close to the camera mount, which makes it not very convenient to rotate it. On some cameras (mostly cropped Nikon cameras), fingers are trapped between the focus ring and the protruding beak of the built-in flash.

The lens body is covered with a characteristic Sigma lens. velvetwhich is typical of many old SIGMA lenses. This coating may be overwritten, after which the lens does not look so beautiful.

During a change in focal length, the trunk moves in waves. The maximum extended trunk is observed at 24 mm focal length, the minimum - at 50 mm. The movement of the trunk is significant and the trunk is extended by 24 mm by a huge length. It is often joked that such lenses have a range of focal lengths not of '24 -70 ′, but of '70 -24 ′.

There is a bayonet mount mark and a mark on the case for quick installation of the hood. The lens uses a plastic hood, which is fixed in special grooves located near the front lens of the lens. The hood can be installed in upside down for transportation. In this position, access to the focus ring is slightly lost. When changing the focal length, the lens hood moves with the front of the lens.

Focusing

Auto focus speed high, the focus speed is practically independent of the orientation of the camera or the set focal length.

For focusing, a conventional micro focusing motor is used, which makes a lot of noise.

The lens does not use internal focus. During focusing, the front lens, along with the frame for the filters, travels forward, but does not rotate. Using polarizing and other specialized filters will be a little difficult. When changing the focal length, the front lens does not rotate.

The minimum focusing distance is 40 cm.

SIGMA ZOOM 24-70mm 1: 2.8 DG EX ASPHERICAL has two focus mode switches 'AF-M'. To perform manual focusing, the lens must be switched to the 'M' focus mode using the switch located near the lens mount and using the main switch. To change the focus modes using the main switch, pull the focus ring toward the lens mount or front lens. During auto focus, the focus ring remains stationary, but can rotate freely without affecting focus. I find the dual focus mode switch uncomfortable.

When used on a camera Canon EOS 5D with very simple 9-point focusing system the lens behaves capriciously. Focus errors are larger than usual.

Focus Features:

In a review, I visited the lens in a shabby form, the mechanism of its diaphragm was faulty, and therefore it is not known for certain what values ​​of F were taken.

I used it quite often (although I used it on Nikon D70s, maybe that's the reason). Covering the aperture noticeably increased the sharpness.
