So far, for full-format cameras, the range of focal lengths of 28-300 mm is the limit of technology and this limit has not been overcome for 18 years (from 1999 to 2017). As far as I know, the first such lens was Tamron AF 28-300mm 1: 3.5-6.3 LD Aspherical [IF] MACRO (model A18).

Assembly

Build quality SIGMA 28-300 / 3.5-6.3 DG MACRO is at a fairly good level. The lens is very nice to the touch, good shot down without any obvious flaws. SIGMA 28-300 / 3.5-6.3 DG MACRO uses a metal mount, but most of the internal parts are made of plastic, which made it possible to make such a super-zoom weighing only 460 grams. The retractable frame of the case consists of two sections (one plastic, the other metal). Rubberized focus and zoom rings. The zoom ring rotates 90 degrees without jerking.

The lens body is covered with a characteristic Sigma lens. velvet, which is typical of many old lenses from SIGMA. This lens is often referred to as the 'Velvet Sigma 28-300'.

SIGMA 28-300 / 3.5-6.3 DG MACRO - has very compact sizes. Its length is only slightly more than the length of whale / full-class lenses. Nikkor 18-55 / 3.5-5.6.

Frame (trunk) of the SIGMA 28-300 / 3.5-6.3 DG MACRO spontaneously changes its size under its own weight (perhaps this begins only with time). For example, when the camera is tilted down, the trunk of the lens spontaneously lengthens (focal length increases). To prevent such an unpleasant nuance, there is a lens case focal length lock button 'LOCK' (the so-called 'lock'), which tightly locks focal length at a value of 28 mm.

To fix the trunk of the lens, you must first set the 28 mm focal length.

It is convenient to 'remove the lens' from the lock before shooting, as the button is in an accessible place (under the thumb of the left hand).

SIGMA 28-300 / 3.5-6.3 DG MACRO uses a plastic lens hood, which is fixed in special grooves located near the front lens of the lens. When changing the focal length, the hood moves with the movable frame of the housing. The hood can be installed in the opposite direction for transportation. In this position, access to the 28 mm focus ring is lost. Due to the huge spread in focal lengths, the lens hood is maximally effective at 28 mm of focal length and practically ineffective in the range of 200-300 mm.

When changing the focal length, the rear lens moves in the middle of the lens body like a pump - it draws in and pushes out air. This behavior of the rear lens is called 'vacuum cleaner effect', which can increase the amount of dust that accumulates in the camera.

Focusing

Auto focus speed is highly dependent on the selected focal length. Focusing speed at 28 mm focal length very low, with an increase in focal length, the focus speed decreases slightly. Focus speed is independent of camera orientation.

Lens uses internal focus. During focusing, the rear and front lenses remain stationary. When changing the focal length, the front lens does not rotate. You can easily use any filters, for example polarizing or gradient.

The focus ring rotates only 45 degrees. The ring travels smoothly, but it feels like the focus gear rotates with the ring, making the focus less comfortable. The minimum focusing distance is only 50 cm, and the maximum zoom ratio (macro) is achieved by 300 mm focal length and is 1: 3 (excellent indicator for a similar lens). Macro shooting in the focal length range from 200 to 300 mm is a very strong point of this lens. There is a 'MACRO 0.5m / 1.6ft' scale on the front of the retractable barrel (on the trunk) of the lens to indicate the maximum magnification rate during macro shooting.

When used on a camera Nikon D90 (with unpretentious Multi-CAM 1000 focusing system) the lens behaves well, very rarely makes a mistake in focusing. I had no problems with focus accuracy and focus. On camera Nikon D90 I checked the presence of the back and focus front at different focusing distances and different values ​​of the focal length (infinity and MDF as well). Pictures taken using the Live View mode (which does not suffer from back / front focus) were used as a measure. Focusing accuracy using phase sensors completely coincided with the Live View mode.

It's important: auto focus with this lens is available only when using him on cameras with built-in motor focusing.

  14. The lens has a manual aperture ring. But nevertheless, as my practice has shown, in conditions with good lighting there are no special problems with automatic focusing even on cameras that are not designed to work with lenses with F / 6.3. SIGMA 28-300 / 3.5-6.3 DG MACRO goes beyond F / 5.6 at a focal length equal to 170 mm, at this value, the maximum relative aperture is already 1: 6.0.

At the time I wrote this review, there were only two super-zooms with a similar zoom ratio that use F / 5.6 at their long end - this Nikon ED AF-S NIKKOR 28-300mm 1: 3.5-5.6G SWM VR IF Aspherical и Canon ZOOM LENS EF 28-300mm 1: 3.5-5.6 L IS USM. Unfortunately, Tamron only makes its super-zooms with F / 6.3 at the long end.

Image quality

Image quality is tricky. Due to the very wide spread of focal lengths, image quality is highly dependent on the selected focal length value. The SIGMA ZOOM 28-300mm 1: 3.5-6.3 DG MACRO is doing pretty well in the center of the frame in the range of 28-180 mm and rather weak in the range of 180-300 mm.     Thanks for the great review! I myself used the ultra-zoom from Sigma on the D5200 (though with optical stabilization already). It feels like a convenient thing, especially on a trip abroad and without a tripod, when “you can take a picture of yourself and your wife against the background of that waterfall” and not carry 2 extra pounds of lenses with you.
    At the same time, the lens, when photographing immediately in jpg format, is simply terrible: constant misses in white balance, glare and overexposure. The standard lens hood (it is the same for all sigma in shape) at a wide angle necessarily gives vignetting and gets into the frame.
    At night, f / 2,8 will be sorely missed; without a stabilizer and tripod at night, handheld shooting will be extremely problematic. Resolution is rather weak. The lens lacks a wide angle.
