Review of Nikon N AF-S Nikkor 58mm 1: 1.4G Nano Crystal Coat SWM Aspherical

According provided by lens Nikon N AF-S Nikkor 58mm 1: 1.4G Nano Crystal Coat SWM Aspherical many thanks to Nikolai Merkulov, who was not afraid to send me this expensive lens by mail from another field.

Nikon N AF-S Nikkor 58mm 1: 1.4G Nano Crystal Coat SWM Aspherical

In short

Nikon N AF-S Nikkor 58mm 1: 1.4G Nano Crystal Coat SWM Aspherical - one of Nikon's best standard fixed lenses with auto focus support. 'Standard' here means a lens with a standard focal length (usually 35 to 85 mm). Immediately about the main thing: although Nikon 58 / 1.4G is good enough, it has a too high price tag.

About Nikon 58 / 1.4G all at once, without leaving the cash desk:

  1. it's not a fifty dollars. 58 mm focal length slightly change its scope and ease of use. I would like to see Nikon instead of Nikon 58 / 1.4G 50/1.2G (E) (analogue Canon EF Lens 50mm 1: 1.2 L USM or Canon EF Lens 50mm 1: 1.0 L Ultrasonic). But nothing who wants an autofocus lens from Nikon at F / 1.2 - let them look towards the mirrorless and Nikon 1 Nikkor 32mm 1: 1.2 N (Nikon 1 Nikkor 32 Nano Crystal Coat). On the other hand, on Nikon DX cameras, the Nikon 58 / 1.4G lens has EGF, equal to 87 mm and is very suitable for portrait shooting. The increased focal length (58 instead of 50mm) can be both helpful and a hindrance in some cases. Who needs less - look to the side Tamron SP 45mm F / 1.8 Di VC USD.
  2. more simple Nikon 50mm 1: 1.4G AF-S Nikkor SWM not so worse than Nikon 58 / 1.4G to overpay as much as 4 times
  3. Nikon 58 / 1.4G case is made of plastic (or some more durable material?). Modern manual metal Nikon 50mm 1: 1.2 Nikkor (AI-S) crying bitterly
  4. Nikon 58 / 1.4G has no direct relation to the truly legendary Nikon Noct-NIKKOR 58mm 1: 1.2 (Ai-s), and also has nothing to do with the old Nippon Kogku Japan NIKKOR-S Aut0 1: 1.4 f = 5.8cm. The Nikon 58 / 1.4G is just an ordinary modern development for the TOP segment, where Nikon had a hole before the Nikon 58 / 1.4G was released. UPDATED: after the announcement of the 'real Noct' in the face Nikon Nikkor Z 58mm 1: 0.95 S Noct my thoughts were confirmed - Nikon 58 / 1.4G has nothing to do with the line of legendary Noct-s.
  5. Nikon 58 / 1.4G has a low focus speed. The lens travel time from infinity to MDF and vice versa is identical to the lens Nikon 50mm 1: 1.4G AF-S Nikkor SWM. I have repeatedly mentioned that this is one of the main shortcomings of Nikon 50 / 1.4G. The same sore from Nikon 50 / 1.4G inherited and Nikon 58 / 1.4G. Most likely, the lenses simply use the same ring focusing motor (these data are not exactly confirmed). It's a shame, but Chinese YONGNUO LENS EF 50mm 1: 1.8 focuses significantly faster than the Nikon 58 / 1.4G, and costs 30 (thirty) times cheaper.
  6. focus ring Nikon 50 / 1.4G rotates 180 degrees; Nikon 58 / 1.4G rotates approximately 135 degrees
  7. Nikon 58 / 1.4G has an MDF of 58 cm and a maximum magnification ratio of 1: 7.7. Wherein Nikon 50 / 1.4G  и Nikon 50 / 1.8G focus from 45 cm, and the maximum zoom ratio is much better and is 1: 6.7
  8. as we can see - some 'improvements'!

UPDATED: Nikon 58 / 1.4G price tag is comparable to the optical mirrorless monster Nikon Nikkor Z 50mm 1: 1.2 S... Nikon Z system mirrorless cameras are definitely better looking to the side Nikon Nikkor Z 50mm 1: 1.2 S.

Image quality and sample photos

In general, the image quality is fine.

Strengths

  • excellent color rendering
  • great bokeh
  • low distortion
  • good enough backlit work
  • good (confident) sharpness in the center of the frame at F / 1.4, excellent on covered apertures

Weak sides

  • noticeable chromatic aberration
  • strong spherochromatism, it is also 'freezing' - the color of contrasting elements of the image outside the focus area in purple and green

My experience

Nikon Development Department:

  • making an autofocus lens of class 50 / 1.2 for SLR cameras does not work - instead, let's make an autofocus 58 / 1.4. UPDATED: Full-frame 2020 / 50 lens comes out in September 1.2 - Nikon Nikkor Z 50mm 1: 1.2 Sbut only for mirrorless cameras.
  • why do we need a new motor for Nikon 58 / 1.4G, old from Nikon 50 / 1.4G should come
  • Nikon 58 / 1.4G doesn’t need high focusing speed, it's a creative lens!
  • you need to add more plastic, inflate the case, deepen the front lens shaft, add the letter N - to make it big, heavy, professional! And it must be produced in Japan, so that the client feels all the power and all the quality earth forces optical power! And the lens hood? We will order the blend in China and let it be 'Made in China' from the outside.
  • we will not tell anyone on which lenses we will apply our nanocrystals (N-antireflection). What are you saying? Apply to just one? Let's do it! Draw the main letter 'N' on the body! Let amateurs also think that 'N' is like Canon's 'L' (after all, the anonymous person reading this section thinks that way!)
  • Sigma 50mm 1: 1.4 DG HSM Art tearing Nikon 58 / 1.4G resolution? For the first time we hear!
  • Canon back in 1989 had autofocus Canon EF Lens 50mm 1: 1.0 L Ultrasonic, Nikon ... Nikon will never have this, mount size, that's it. Seriously, Nikon has nothing lighter than the rangefinder Nippon Kogaku Japan Nikkor-N Auto 1: 1.1 f = 5cm (fluoroscopic perversions with TV-Nikkor 1: 0.9 f = 35mm do not count). UPDATED: out Nikon Nikkor Z 50mm 1: 1.2 S и Nikon Nikkor Z 58mm 1: 0.95 S Noct, but only for mirrorless cameras.
  • Why make a filter on a classic 77 mm? Let them suffer with a slightly smaller diameter of 72 mm!
  • a few years later: it is not possible to make an autofocus 85 / 1.2 - instead, let's make an autofocus 105/1.4! We already have experience with 58 / 1.4. A focus motor for 105/1.4 take from some Nikon 18-55 / 3.5-5.6that was lying in stock (link where you can look at the most powerful focus motor for 105 / 1.4) We already had a ride with Nikon 85 / 1.4G! Just write on the body SWM and sell!
  • we will be 2017 years old in 100, you can do everything! And this is an idea! Put the logo 'Nikon 100th Anniversary' on three-part iconostasis and sell in tridentor!
  • 58 is like 85, only the numbers are reversed. The psychological trick! The mystery of the focal length is revealed!
  • in Canon legions speak openly and point out about the dust and moisture resistance of its flagship Canon EF Lens 50mm 1: 1.2 L USM, and we will be somewhere clearly indicate protection Nikon 58 / 1.4G? No, we will not!
  • What is the salt of Nikon 58 / 1.4G? There is no salt, and therefore we will tell everyone about super-bokeh and talk about the connection with the legendary Nikon Noct-NIKKOR 58mm 1: 1.2. UPDATED: they released a replacement - Nikon Nikkor Z 58mm 1: 0.95 S Noct.
  • provide a lens to antiquity Kenny, he will arrange the right PR a week before the official announcement - and sales will skyrocket
  • on the network, we will launch an advertisement 'anonymous filming on Nikon D3100, remember, Nikon 58 / 1.4G is a dream for your sweet dreams'
  • and let's still sell the Nikon 58 / 1.4G for four Nikon 50 / 1.4G. The golden ring is worth it! People are eating! World! Work! Dollars!
  • how to get around the enemy Canon EF Lens 50mm 1: 1.2 L USM? Just set the price tag for $ 300-400 higher. Who is more expensive is better!
  • or maybe release the updated Nikon Noct-NIKKOR 58mm 1: 1.2 and show Otusu 1.4 / 55 where do crayfish hibernate? No, it’s better to release more in 2017 whale plugs without stub and with limited compatibility with old cameras... UPDATE: did show with Nikon Nikkor Z 58mm 1: 0.95 S Noct... But again - for mirrorless cameras.

If you put aside humor and mockery, then Nikon 58 / 1.4G still good lens (not great and not very good, but just good)... In general, it is overrated. If the financial component does not matter, feel free to buy Nikon 58 / 1.4G.

If add to Nikon 50 / 1.4G gold ring (!), 8 mm focal length, letter 'N' (and no one will ever know the difference in enlightenment), selling for $ 1100 more - you can easily get a Nikon 58 / 1.4G.

For creative photography, as well as for portrait photography, I recommend getting a lens for the same money Nikon 85 / 1.4G (or any good 85th one).

For reference: 58mm is actually a very common focal length. For example, a lot of prime lenses were produced with this focal length value - the most widespread and widespread lens is Helios-44. 58/ 2 (a trillion of his modifications and many of his ancestors in the face Biotarov) And even now they release pretty Voigtlander nokton 58mm F1.4 SLII и Voigtlander nokton 58mm F1.4 SL II S и Petzval 58mm f / 1.9 Art.

  • Eugene

Some whining style of presentation. I believe that the mood of the review is fundamentally contrary to the presented photo, it seems someone is burning bridges.

    • Arkady Shapoval

In the review, I pointed out that the lens creates good image quality with excellent bokeh.

  • anonym

you would use Arkady on d50 to test it better)))
    it would be funnier)

    • Reader

Only d1 with 2mp, although with my d5000 just right, otherwise the network reviews only for a full frame. The picture on the number of MP does not change

  • dragon yes not snape

The lens is wonderful. It became finally clear that the image is made by the lens, not the camera. How did everyone spit on d90. You see in it is not a white balance but a blue balance, and its colors are shitty and the camera is generally left. What happened? It was worth putting a normal lens on it and look at how charming it turned out. I observed the same color difference on the d750 with oasis lenses. It's all about glass. It is necessary to take glass with the letter N and everything will be in order.

    • dragon yes not snape

Honestly, I did not understand Arkady's irritation on this glass. In my glass is VERY GOOD. Expensive? Well, what to do. Good things are expensive. Nikon 85 1.8g costs exactly half of this 58ki. But you can’t even compare them. Now I wouldn’t take 85ku one-time but save 58k.

      • Jury

if this lens cost as much as two 85 1.8g, then the irritation would be less, and the bottom line is that it costs like four 85 1.8g

        • Oleg

Add to this that the user himself must guess whether this lens is weatherproof or not. Generally a strange game of cat and mouse at that price

        • NE

          You can’t say better

      • Maugli

Apparently pent up) It seems to me rather emotions about Nikon as a whole.

        • Arkady Shapoval

Yes, just a humorous review, the owner of this lens wrote me a text in personal correspondence that I did not understand this lens (or something like that), the review is not complete, etc.
If anyone has any unclear points, questions or comments - please indicate them here, I will try to highlight my opinion or point to real facts.

          • Denis

Arkady, you humiliate this glass with crop

            • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

And if you put this glass on a medium format camera, will the camera be humiliated?

              • Denis

I don't see the point. you can install, but you can hardly install

            • Alexey

“… Humiliated with a crop” - pearl. A good lens cannot be humiliated by a crop, and a crop is not humiliation either.

            • peter

d90 saved him. The pixel is large. The poles out on lenstip can be said to have ridiculed this lens.

              • dragon yes not snape

The Poles did not make fun of him, but crumpled him up and harshly. They wrote, I quote "Nikon is trying to sell you a piece of garbage for a lot of money under the guise of his legendary heritage."

              • Arkady Shapoval

And where exactly is it written?

              • dragon yes not snape

Review 58 1.4 on the Polish website lenstip

              • Arkady Shapoval

Yes, Nikon did a good job, I did well.

      • Arkady Shapoval

at a price of 58 1.4g you can buy 3.6 pieces 85 1.8zh. The lens 58 1.4zh is good, the review does not say anywhere that it is bad. But the point is not only that.

      • Andrey

rented a couple of times 85 1.4 with the letter N - it was excellent. on my d750, I seem to get the maximum from possible

  • Michael

Sharpness and contrast are unbelievable .. Perhaps for now I will keep my favorite 44-2 for female portraits.

    • Michael

Each pixel is proud of the fact that they finally managed to resolve it. Now on the monitor is a solid clear digital.

  • Honey

    cynicism indicator rolls over

    • Peter Sh.

Cynicism is not at all the same as irony.

  • Peter Sh.

The whole problem is that we need a new version of the old Noctorn, or whatever it is.
To position this lens as a replacement is quite ugly, to put it mildly, even if it is distant.
Advantages over 50mm f / 1.4G are literally minimal, on a subjective level.
If you put these two next to each other, you cannot distinguish a picture from them.
I'm not talking about the price, everything is clear here.

So do not be offended, the owners of the subject. There is no sense in it.

    • A.N. Onim

      Envy silently

      • Peter Sh.

A little more and I will envy silently.

Here are the spherical horses in a vacuum from the Germans:

        • Oleg

By the way, the Germans put Kenonovsky 50 \ 1.2 twosome on optical characteristics

          • Peter Sh.

The Germans are frankly perplexed. Black and white squares with stripes on the stand are not sharp, why do you need such a lens?
And they will never understand with their square heads that the lens is not designed for such purposes, but for a real three-dimensional color world.

  • Peter Sh.

As you can see, both lenses are almost identical:

    • Arkady Shapoval

suddenly, in the photozone 50 1.4 is sharper in the center of 58 1.4 to 1.4, however, it’s not only about sharpness, 58 1.4 has a different curvature of the field, a different picture, etc.

      • Peter Sh.

Somewhere on the camera rental site I saw MTF Nikon 70-200 f / 2.8 VR graphics, it seems, on 10 identical lenses. The spread in sharpness was from 5 to 15 percent, from the center to the edges. If you take 100 lenses, the spread will be even greater. Therefore, all these measurements in one instance are simply meaningless.

        • Oleg

Yes, Leica, for example, also does not show extreme sharpness, the emphasis is on the corporate bokeh and pattern

      • Peter Sh.

In order that all would represent why measurements of sharpness only at one copy of a lens do not speak about anything.
Here, for example, the spread of sharpness of 10 copies of the Sigma 85mm f / 1.4 DG Art.
Moreover, for the 85mm fix, these are just excellent results, the same as those of Nikon and Kenon. Taken from lensrentals.com:

      • Denis

I saw on the examples of photos on the network the bulbs in bokeh at 58mm 1.4G

  • lynx

    Lens as a lens

  • varezhkin

a somewhat nervous, even openly nikonphobic post turned out ... :) sorry, they didn't test it on the 700-ke, after all, the beauty of the picture is noticeably cropped, but even on the crop one feels some unusual blur. Apparently, Nikon does not in principle put ring motors in G-fixes, so that they would not report them, but buy an “iconostasis”. An alternative for these purposes is the past screwdriver versions of fixes.

    • Arkady Shapoval

In fact, there is a ring motor, it just has a slow speed. It is believed that speed was sacrificed for the sake of accuracy.

Here is Nikon 50mm 1.4, the same bokeh unusual blur and more like that of 58mm 1.4:

    • anonym

It’s immediately obvious that you have no idea what you are writing about.

      • Peter Sh.

Of course I don’t. I just went out for a walk.

        • anonym

The 50 / 1.4 in your picture has a hard bokeh, and the 58 / 1.4 is loved for the creamy bokeh!

          • Peter Sh.

            Yes? Very good.

But seriously, I think these very lenses, fifty dollars, are the most creative and universal of all high-aperture (or ultra-high aperture).
85mm is already narrower and more for portraits. At night and at dusk there is not enough proper coverage, and generally not enough light is passed.
35mm wide, a lot of space next to the photographer captures, and the background does not blur enough.

            • anonym

As I bought an 85-ku - I hardly use fifty dollars. Only if it is very cramped. And so it is better to move away. The 85's picture is more interesting. For a full 85mm frame, almost like a staff can be used! Now I want something like 180 / 2.8D for reporting.

              • Peter Sh.

Yesterday I suddenly realized that I didn’t know how to shoot anything artistic or creative for anything longer than 50 mm. Well, I can still do that.
That is, I’m shooting on telezuma, mainly, but a report. And then everything is there, and composition and theme and colors. More precisely, that is what you work with.

And then I wanted creativity. I put on a telezoom, walked and walked. In addition to cones on the tree, I did not come up with anything ...

So much "noise" due to a simple near-band 1,4. Glass is like glass. Expensive. Everything.

  • Alexey

But I agree with Arkady, as the owner of this miracle, I also believe that the lens is overvalued, the price is not more than 1.5 * 50mm f1.4, if I hadn’t been given it, I wouldn’t buy it myself, it’s not worth it 2 kilobax.

    • Michael

      50 * 1.5 = 75 and here only 58)))

      • Oleg

58 times 1.5 and times 2 maybe they’ve rated it using this formula

        • Michael

Looks like. Well, good glasses have never been cheap

          • Alexey

This is not good, this class glass is slightly above average, and ask for 2 kilobax for it an outright disgust from Nikon. There are much more interesting and much cheaper glasses from other manufacturers for nikon f. For me, 85 1.4 is better than this short-cut and costs a little cheaper, although it was also greatly overestimated.

            • anonym

You cannot compare glasses with different focal lengths. Especially guided only by price.

The lens is good, it plays to Otus only in sharpness. But it’s easier, cheaper and with autofocus. And bokeh! From this point of view, it is difficult to complain about him!

85 / 1.4G became less interesting with the 105 / 1.4E release. And if you want an interesting 85k for a cheap price - Helios 40-2 is the best choice. The best portrait photographer available! With gorgeous bokeh!

    • NE

      Why buy, if not secret?

      • NE

        Sorry, inattentively read

  • Alexey

    Happy holiday to all.

    • Peter Sh.

Thank you, too, with Victory Day!

  • Arkady Shapoval

The owner of the lens from this review kindly provided a video with focus on the very top Nikon d5 camera to date. I made a video from other videos and compared the speed with 50 1.4zh and with the speed of focusing on another camera.
    Conclusions:
    1. The lens run time is the same for 58 1.4 and 50 1.4
    2. The lens travel time does not depend on the camera (d5 and d600 and d90)

  • Dmitriy

My ancient Tamron SP AF 90mm F / 2.8 Di MACRO (272Е) costs 11 times (!!!) cheaper than the Nikon N AF-S Nikkor 58mm 1: 1.4G, and on dxomark it surpasses the aforementioned nikkor in resolution, distortion (it generally equal to 0, the best among all lenses), vignetting, color reproduction, second only to chromatic aberration, is not afraid of backlight, and by general estimation, of course. )))))
And here we are confident in the ideality of Japanese technologies ...

    • anonym

Do not forget that there are still other parameters: focal length, aperture ... For a macro lens at a close focusing distance, it is even smaller - about f4! Macro lenses are used for the subject - where sharpness and a large depth of field are needed. And high-aperture (about) fifty rubles - for the sake of a beautiful reportage, pleasant bikes and luminosity. If you need exceptionally sharpness at fifty dollars for little money - Nikkor 50 / 1.8G.

Tamron and Sigma are very variable in quality from instance to instance. In addition, a good bake is rarely given out. The Soviet ones have the most interesting bikes, but drawdowns in picture quality. Zeiss is our everything! But VERY expensive! And there is no autofocus.

Native glass is always better for Nikon: high quality + autofocus.

      • Dmitriy

You said that correctly, but there is one caveat: for a portrait specifically for 50 mm. at nikon and 90 mm. with Tamron, you move away to the appropriate distance (so that the subject of shooting “was in the frame”), with Tamron, at this distance, the focusing distance is sufficient for f / 2,8 (established empirically). As for the macro, even on my Nikon 35mm. 1,8G (cropped) I shoot “pseudomacro” with F / 7,1 or less, otherwise the DOF is small. F / 22 is often small for a macro lens.
As for the tamron (I had only one sigma), then for such a price there is a choice, plus on cameras of the D70xx series and full-frame there is the possibility of correction of front and back focus. All available to me belong to the SP series (there is no quality). Helios 44-7 and Jupiter 21m, the arm doesn’t rise to infinity, although the bokeh is interesting.
About that and interpreted that native glasses are good, but their price is like a downed Boeing, for an amateur, due to this parameter, only a few glasses are interesting or used copies are also at a cosmic price. We went to the mountains in winter in UAZs, one of the drivers dropped his nikon: the total was 100000 rubles, I dropped my tamron 10-24, I didn't even break the polarik and the hood from the same height. Conclusion: nikon is more reliable, but in a specific situation, luck is much more important. And my tamrons were removed in the sand, and in the mud, and in the snow, and in the rain and nothing, they work.

        • anonym

In such inhuman conditions, I do not shoot - here you know better. I myself only use fixes - they are of better quality and cheaper than zooms.

I wanted to buy a Nikkor 105 / 2.8G macro with a normal buck. For portraits and macro photography. But then the money was only enough for Helios 85 / 1.5. And then I realized that aperture 85ki is the very thing for portraits. Later bought Nikkor 85 / 1.8G. He is more boring than Helios, but sharper and with autofocus. I rent them almost everything! Fifty dollars compared with 85ka gives a different picture. Less interesting.

          I could have changed my Nikkor 50 / 1.8G for this 58 / 1.4G. For a genre photo. But if I had the necessary amount I would buy better 85 / 1.4 or 105 / 1.4. Long-focus like more!

          • Dmitriy

The conditions are normal, only the threads from the filters need to be cleaned, otherwise it will get stuck from the sand, and even in winter, do not wind it up so that there is no pressure difference.
You have great fixes, but I only had enough money for the non-powered Tamron.
As for 85 / 1.8G, I think that this is an excellent portrait lens like Helios 40-2. Nikon 105 / 1,4 is generally a fairy tale, but for the money it remains only to drool.

    • Peter Sh.

Hello, and whose technology is Tamron?

      • anonym

"Japanese technologies" - no! Yes - “Made in Japan”.

  • Dmitriy

Great photos, good review, thank you very much, Arkady!
The lens is wonderful, apparently, but the price tag is sky-high. Recently sold his fifty-fifty 1.4G and acquired the new 1.2 AI-S. Happy as an elephant! The photos are just fantastic, I’m happy with the manual focus because it never misses, unlike the automatic one, with which I had 50% of the marriage.

  • Onotole

Of course, I understand that this is Arkady's personal blog and he is free to write here whatever he pleases.
But for me this is the first time that I read the review on Radozhiv - and I really wanted to wash myself, so much dirt, so much bile ...
In general, an unpleasant, I will inform you, a feeling.

    • KalekseyG

This he still did not describe new cases with their price.

    • Arkady Shapoval

If somewhere is wrong, write, do not be shy.

      • Onotole

        Hands reached write, I write:

At first glance - everything is on the case - expensive, plastic, slow and hereinafter.
The problem is that many, including You, Arkady, did not understand the very meaning of the existence of this lens, its ideology, if you will.
And they crap him from the point of view of a professional photographer, bombers (I hope this will not offend anyone) who earns by creating photo images.
Not that arshin measured, so to speak.
And from these positions - everything is correct, and the focus is not the same, and the price is prohibitive, and the filters are not the same, and the autofocus is not alley, and in general why is it needed when there is 50 / 1.4, and even that is not needed, you need a mythical 50 / 1.2 ... (by the way, I do not see the mentioned fringing in the given examples).
However, here in the comments several times the correct thought has already flashed, that this lens is not for reporting, not for sports - it is a CREATIVE lens, no matter how it sounds in our time. And it is addressed primarily to well-off amateur photographers (who do not make money in the photo), of whom there are many in the west, and not to weddings. But from these positions - this glass looks in a completely different light: this is, first of all, a special picture, the most pleasant bokeh (which has NOTHING to do with bokeh 50 / 1,4, which you had the courage to recommend instead), outstanding color rendering (this is a lot who noticed - even from a camera such as D90) and the curvature of the field, allowing you to use it in a creative way. Everything else, including price, focus speed, etc. etc. (well, perhaps, except for the Chinese hood, this is perhaps the most serious, in this case, a puncture) - for them in third place, if at all taken into account. Taking into account this technical specification, the nitpicking to the diameter of the filters, the plastic body and the autofocus motor model look especially ridiculous - who cares? This thing is for leisurely and thoughtful filming in your free time. Hobby like fishing. You look like a seiner captain who does not understand how these would-be amateur fishermen can buy a spinning rod for the price of four 5-ton winches, that's what you need to fish with the right way!
Thus, by its ideology, this lens is somewhat similar to the Nikon Df camera, except that Df is beautiful in appearance and stands out from the rest, and this lens looks just like any other modern Nikon lens.

And I also wanted to add, what no one saw including in foreign reviews (here, apparently, the engineers did as they saw fit, but they didn’t explain the essence to the marketers):
if you pay attention to the sharpness tests from any source, you will see that the lens as a whole is sharp, but only at closed apertures. And on the open one it even drains 50 / 1.4. How could this happen if it has both a gold ring and a large N and “made in Japan”? Nikon shoves us unfinished shit at an exorbitant price?
Meanwhile, there is an opinion (and not only mine) that this was done on purpose and for the following reasons: now the world is full of super-sharp lenses from the first echelon and from the second (some new Sigmas are worth something) and even the Chinese and Koreans are already doing very decent lenses in terms of sharpness. For example 105 / 1.4E or 85 / 1.4G easily give out-of-the-box resolution; even open, even in corners. And now attention is the question - is such permission always necessary? If you are an average artisan, you will not hesitate to answer “yes”, if you consider yourself a photo artist, “of course not”. Often, especially when shooting portraits, and not only portraits, detailed, “protocol”, pixel-by-pixel sharpness is simply not needed and is even harmful. And where does softness come from if the lens is always and in any situation as sharp as ...? Just a couple of decades ago, photographers easily solved this problem - by opening the aperture. As any beginner knows, lenses reduce sharpness as the aperture is opened. But not modern ones. And so, Nikon again gave people, photographers of the whole world, to control not only the depth of field, but also the sharpness only through one aperture. But pixel-droppers of all countries and nationalities are happy to smash this glass in reviews only for the failed sharpness, without getting into the essence.
        However, everything is as always.

        • Arkady Shapoval

Thanks for the comment. This is also just one of the opinions.
In the review, I pointed out several times that this is a really good lens. Unfortunately, or fortunately, it has no direct analogue - this is the main wall of protection for this lens. As my practice has shown, photography in its original understanding is almost independent of the steepness of the lens and the bokeh of its bokeh. Those who do not know how to create an artistic shot will not be able to use this lens. Those who know how - will simply simplify their task. The latter, unfortunately, are very few and they will be able to make their “artistic” masterpiece for almost any technique.
Also, in the results, I clearly indicated that “this is the best autofocus fifty or about fifty from Nikon”. That is why I don’t understand why to protect the lens, if it is “the best” anyway.
In the end, I can add that for myself, there really is no alternative, and therefore I will have to take it.

          • Onotole

I am not defending, my comment was that the concepts of “bad”, “good”, “best” - in relation to this thing as never before - are subjective. What is a clear minus for one - does not matter for another, or even a "plus". Pluralism of opinions is more important here than ever, thanks for the opportunity to leave comments.

          • Onotole

By the way, I would never buy one for myself - I don't like plastic.

          • Onotole

And one more remark - in the previous post I was not talking about true labor photographers, but more about those who imagine themselves as such. Who believes that only a special technique will help create a special shot. So they are the very target audience.
After all, the lens is indeed special, although this is not visible at first glance.

    • anonym

I agree with you on all 100, a similar feeling arose

  • vladimir

Well, obviously on d90 the focus will not be fast with him. On d810 I have it flying.

    • Arkady Shapoval

focusing speed on d90 and Nikon D5 is the same. The same goes for the d810.

  • Alexey Chitakh

I tried to compare them with what is called forehead with 50 Art. I realized that these are different lenses. The sharpness is almost the same. Drawing is a subjective concept. Blur is better for Nikon, but one must take into account the difference in focal length. Sigma's color rendition is warmer. But Nikon is light, pleasant to the touch, does not strive to slip out of the hands when changing, unlike sigma. Nikon, like Sigma, took on the secondary housing in perfect condition. So, the difference in price between them is exactly 20 thousand. Not so much. But 110 thousand Russian rubles for a new one is too much. Chromatics on Nikon are more pronounced than on sigma. Although the site DXO gave Nikon 58 1,4G the highest rating for chromatic aberrations, at the level of Zeiss apochromats (what they measure there). For example, a simple conversion in Aperture, for those interested, I'll throw the raves.

    • Denis

Sigma is terrible :) in the corners. Nikon is much better

    • Andrei

Alexey, and did you compare this Nikon 58 “head-on” with his Voyt?

    • Onotole

In the picture - Sigma drains in full.

  • Alexey Chitakh

…… add more plastic, inflate the case, deepen the front lens shaft, add the letter N - to make it big, heavy, professional! And it must be produced in Japan, so that the client feels all the power and all the quality of the power of the earth optical power! ……
    Leica APO-Macro-Elmarit-TL 60 mm f / 2.8 ASPH Black
How do you like this variant of the body inflation? Nikon 58 is an innocent child ...

  • Alexey

I will make my contribution to the review. When I need soft blur, I use it and when I need more clear bokeh I use the case millus 50 mm 1.4; For 85 MDFs, I decided to take 58 mm more for the boke even though I have 85 milliseus case 1.4 (upon purchase) compared with the native Nikon af-s 85mm f / 1.4g flare mugs in the bokeh and the zeiza liked clearly readable borders against the native in which they were smeared)

  • willow

Judging by the comments, everyone who could not afford to crap him. You would give an alternative to him. And right on a simple point than your tamron / sigma / helius (emphasize necessary) is better at 58mm? Well, or brought your reasons: where did such a strange focal length come from? Maybe it’s enough to replace it with 50/35/85 (underline as necessary) and forget 58mm?

    • Novel

FR 58 mm specifically from Nikon is associated with the need to fit into certain sizes so as not to cling to the mirror. 50 / 1.2 did not work, did 58 / 1.2. This 58 / 1.4 seems to pay homage to that focal length.

This lens is criticized not for quality, but for the exorbitant price, for which they receive not the fastest (1.4) rather slow bulky plastic lens with a Chinese lens hood.

      • BAHO444

I agree, it's a little expensive ... In this situation, 50 1,4 G will suit me, and instead of 85 1,4 G, 85 1,8 G is quite happy, but if I earned money with photography, I WOULD be sure to buy both. I do not welcome savings where funds are invested in equipment for earning money.
