Review of Nikon N AF-S Nikkor 58mm 1: 1.4G Nano Crystal Coat SWM Aspherical

According provided by lens Nikon N AF-S Nikkor 58mm 1: 1.4G Nano Crystal Coat SWM Aspherical many thanks to Nikolai Merkulov, who was not afraid to send me this expensive lens by mail from another field.

Nikon N AF-S Nikkor 58mm 1: 1.4G Nano Crystal Coat SWM Aspherical

In short

Nikon N AF-S Nikkor 58mm 1: 1.4G Nano Crystal Coat SWM Aspherical - one of Nikon's best standard fixed lenses with auto focus support. 'Standard' here means a lens with a standard focal length (usually 35 to 85 mm). Immediately about the main thing: although Nikon 58 / 1.4G is good enough, it has a too high price tag.

About Nikon 58 / 1.4G all at once, without leaving the cash desk:

  1. it's not a fifty dollars. 58 mm focal length slightly change its scope and ease of use. I would like to see Nikon instead of Nikon 58 / 1.4G 50/1.2G (E) (analogue Canon EF Lens 50mm 1: 1.2 L USM or Canon EF Lens 50mm 1: 1.0 L Ultrasonic). But nothing who wants an autofocus lens from Nikon at F / 1.2 - let them look towards the mirrorless and Nikon 1 Nikkor 32mm 1: 1.2 N (Nikon 1 Nikkor 32 Nano Crystal Coat). On the other hand, on Nikon DX cameras, the Nikon 58 / 1.4G lens has EGF, equal to 87 mm and is very suitable for portrait shooting. The increased focal length (58 instead of 50mm) can be both helpful and a hindrance in some cases. Who needs less - look to the side Tamron SP 45mm F / 1.8 Di VC USD.
  2. more simple Nikon 50mm 1: 1.4G AF-S Nikkor SWM not so worse than Nikon 58 / 1.4G to overpay as much as 4 times
  3. Nikon 58 / 1.4G case is made of plastic (or some more durable material?). Modern manual metal Nikon 50mm 1: 1.2 Nikkor (AI-S) crying bitterly
  4. Nikon 58 / 1.4G has no direct relation to the truly legendary Nikon Noct-NIKKOR 58mm 1: 1.2 (Ai-s), and also has nothing to do with the old Nippon Kogku Japan NIKKOR-S Aut0 1: 1.4 f = 5.8cm. The Nikon 58 / 1.4G is just an ordinary modern development for the TOP segment, where Nikon had a hole before the Nikon 58 / 1.4G was released. UPDATED: after the announcement of the 'real Noct' in the face Nikon Nikkor Z 58mm 1: 0.95 S Noct my thoughts were confirmed - Nikon 58 / 1.4G has nothing to do with the line of legendary Noct-s.
  5. Nikon 58 / 1.4G has a low focus speed. The lens travel time from infinity to MDF and vice versa is identical to the lens Nikon 50mm 1: 1.4G AF-S Nikkor SWM. I have repeatedly mentioned that this is one of the main shortcomings of Nikon 50 / 1.4G. The same sore from Nikon 50 / 1.4G inherited and Nikon 58 / 1.4G. Most likely, the lenses simply use the same ring focusing motor (these data are not exactly confirmed). It's a shame, but Chinese YONGNUO LENS EF 50mm 1: 1.8 focuses significantly faster than the Nikon 58 / 1.4G, and costs 30 (thirty) times cheaper.
  6. focus ring Nikon 50 / 1.4G rotates 180 degrees; Nikon 58 / 1.4G rotates approximately 135 degrees
  7. Nikon 58 / 1.4G has an MDF of 58 cm and a maximum magnification ratio of 1: 7.7. Wherein Nikon 50 / 1.4G  и Nikon 50 / 1.8G focus from 45 cm, and the maximum zoom ratio is much better and is 1: 6.7
  8. as we can see - some 'improvements'!

UPDATED: Nikon 58 / 1.4G price tag is comparable to the optical mirrorless monster Nikon Nikkor Z 50mm 1: 1.2 S... Nikon Z system mirrorless cameras are definitely better looking to the side Nikon Nikkor Z 50mm 1: 1.2 S.

Image quality and sample photos

In general, the image quality is fine.

Strengths

  • excellent color rendering
  • great bokeh
  • low distortion
  • good enough backlit work
  • good (confident) sharpness in the center of the frame at F / 1.4, excellent on covered apertures

Weak sides

  • noticeable chromatic aberration
  • strong spherochromatism, it is also 'freezing' - the color of contrasting elements of the image outside the focus area in purple and green

My experience

Nikon Development Department:

  • making an autofocus lens of class 50 / 1.2 for SLR cameras does not work - instead, let's make an autofocus 58 / 1.4. UPDATED: Full-frame 2020 / 50 lens comes out in September 1.2 - Nikon Nikkor Z 50mm 1: 1.2 Sbut only for mirrorless cameras.
  • why do we need a new motor for Nikon 58 / 1.4G, old from Nikon 50 / 1.4G should come
  • Nikon 58 / 1.4G doesn’t need high focusing speed, it's a creative lens!
  • you need to add more plastic, inflate the case, deepen the front lens shaft, add the letter N - to make it big, heavy, professional! And it must be produced in Japan, so that the client feels all the power and all the quality earth forces optical power! And the lens hood? We will order the blend in China and let it be 'Made in China' from the outside.
  • we will not tell anyone on which lenses we will apply our nanocrystals (N-antireflection). What are you saying? Apply to just one? Let's do it! Draw the main letter 'N' on the body! Let amateurs also think that 'N' is like Canon's 'L' (after all, the anonymous person reading this section thinks that way!)
  • Sigma 50mm 1: 1.4 DG HSM Art tearing Nikon 58 / 1.4G resolution? For the first time we hear!
  • Canon back in 1989 had autofocus Canon EF Lens 50mm 1: 1.0 L Ultrasonic, Nikon ... Nikon will never have this, mount size, that's it. Seriously, Nikon has nothing lighter than the rangefinder Nippon Kogaku Japan Nikkor-N Auto 1: 1.1 f = 5cm (fluoroscopic perversions with TV-Nikkor 1: 0.9 f = 35mm do not count). UPDATED: out Nikon Nikkor Z 50mm 1: 1.2 S и Nikon Nikkor Z 58mm 1: 0.95 S Noct, but only for mirrorless cameras.
  • Why make a filter on a classic 77 mm? Let them suffer with a slightly smaller diameter of 72 mm!
  • a few years later: it is not possible to make an autofocus 85 / 1.2 - instead, let's make an autofocus 105/1.4! We already have experience with 58 / 1.4. A focus motor for 105/1.4 take from some Nikon 18-55 / 3.5-5.6that was lying in stock (link where you can look at the most powerful focus motor for 105 / 1.4) We already had a ride with Nikon 85 / 1.4G! Just write on the body SWM and sell!
  • we will be 2017 years old in 100, you can do everything! And this is an idea! Put the logo 'Nikon 100th Anniversary' on three-part iconostasis and sell in tridentor!
  • 58 is like 85, only the numbers are reversed. The psychological trick! The mystery of the focal length is revealed!
  • in Canon legions speak openly and point out about the dust and moisture resistance of its flagship Canon EF Lens 50mm 1: 1.2 L USM, and we will be somewhere clearly indicate protection Nikon 58 / 1.4G? No, we will not!
  • What is the salt of Nikon 58 / 1.4G? There is no salt, and therefore we will tell everyone about super-bokeh and talk about the connection with the legendary Nikon Noct-NIKKOR 58mm 1: 1.2. UPDATED: they released a replacement - Nikon Nikkor Z 58mm 1: 0.95 S Noct.
  • provide a lens to antiquity Kenny, he will arrange the right PR a week before the official announcement - and sales will skyrocket
  • on the network, we will launch an advertisement 'anonymous filming on Nikon D3100, remember, Nikon 58 / 1.4G is a dream for your sweet dreams'
  • and let's still sell the Nikon 58 / 1.4G for four Nikon 50 / 1.4G. The golden ring is worth it! People are eating! World! Work! Dollars!
  • how to get around the enemy Canon EF Lens 50mm 1: 1.2 L USM? Just set the price tag for $ 300-400 higher. Who is more expensive is better!
  • or maybe release the updated Nikon Noct-NIKKOR 58mm 1: 1.2 and show Otusu 1.4 / 55 where do crayfish hibernate? No, it’s better to release more in 2017 whale plugs without stub and with limited compatibility with old cameras... UPDATE: did show with Nikon Nikkor Z 58mm 1: 0.95 S Noct... But again - for mirrorless cameras.

If you put aside humor and mockery, then Nikon 58 / 1.4G still good lens (not great and not very good, but just good)... In general, it is overrated. If the financial component does not matter, feel free to buy Nikon 58 / 1.4G.

If add to Nikon 50 / 1.4G gold ring (!), 8 mm focal length, letter 'N' (and no one will ever know the difference in enlightenment), selling for $ 1100 more - you can easily get a Nikon 58 / 1.4G.

For creative photography, as well as for portrait photography, I recommend getting a lens for the same money Nikon 85 / 1.4G (or any good 85th one).

For reference: 58mm is actually a very common focal length. For example, a lot of prime lenses were produced with this focal length value - the most widespread and widespread lens is Helios-44. 58/ 2 (a trillion of his modifications and many of his ancestors in the face Biotarov) And even now they release pretty Voigtlander nokton 58mm F1.4 SLII и Voigtlander nokton 58mm F1.4 SL II S и Petzval 58mm f / 1.9 Art.

I like it at 850 and I liked it at 800 ke, the rest is not interesting to me, who likes 50mm 1.4 is not a problem forward.

  • BAHO444

By the way, this review objectively wins thanks to the shooting conditions in this review, and a very pretty girl-model, if leaves and flowers were shot for them, then enthusiastic exclamations about the “drawing” would be much less :)

How can you evaluate the quality of top-end optics on a corp camera? If you showed a photo on 50 / 1.4 g and 58 / 1.4g on a d600-d800, then you could judge the picture. I shot on d800 with Nikor 50 / 1.4g and when I switched to 58 / 1.4g and was pleasantly surprised to say the least. In the 50s, there was a soap picture which diaphragm you couldn’t set (the modernized screwdriver version) and judging by the geometry the distortion was greater there. In 58mm, the real sharpness in the center starts from 3.2. About the case size a lot of flooding and I like that the lens is deeply recessed and there is no need for a lens hood because I set the nd filter b + w vario and it would not be convenient to work with it with the hood installed.

Personally, my opinion is that 58 / 1.4 is a kind of symbiosis of bokeh and sharpness (although there is sharper optics). And it is intended primarily for art photography, although I had to shoot a subject on it as well.

This topic is already hackneyed here, it is criticized not for its optical properties, but for its inflated price, lack of dust and moisture protection as a competitor at a higher price, a slow focusing motor inherited from a cheaper brother, and an excellent hood "made in china" will give a special charm when shooting a wedding. From the fact that the company, for marketing reasons, released two fifty dollars with the same aperture, one shit for 300 bucks, and the second good one for 1500 with the same aperture, it did not stop being just fifty dollars, and in order to separate one from the other, it simply added 8mm focal length, without adding no dust and moisture protection, no faster autofocus and throwing a cheap Chinese hood to the pile, but yes, you can not wear it

  • Eugene

    I really liked about AF

I have been using it for 10 years 50 1.4g I don’t know what to replace with everything.
I don’t sell a 13 year old 1.8D because it’s incomparably faster in indoor reporting.

So I liked what they wrote that he is just as bad 58mm as 50 1,4G. The drive is most likely the same.

And in three other tests, at the first request in Google, it was only briefly written about FAST, but not very AF. In general, paid reviews.

50 1.8g does not seem to have such problems
