Manfrotto MT190GOA4TB 190 Go

Manfrotto is a well-known Italian manufacturer of the widest range of equipment for photo and video. Differs in acceptable quality and affordable price.

I offer a small overview of the new Manfrotto MT190A4TB Go tripod!

This tripod belongs to the 190 series (a very famous and popular series), has 4-section legs and is made of aluminum. There is also a carbon version, but CFRP is very expensive these days due to exchange rates, so I opted for aluminum. The word “Go!”, Apparently, should tell us that this model is a tripod for travel, which means it is compact and light in weight.

The weight of the tripod is 1,67 kg, and the length when folded is only 45 cm. I would not say that the weight of the tripod is small, rather it is average. But the length is really not big.

In the unfolded position, the tripod height is 122 cm (this is the base value, i.e. excluding the height of the central column), and the maximum height is 146 cm.In principle, this is enough for most people, since the tripod height must also be added to the tripod height head and viewfinder distance. In general, I can recommend the following formula for selecting the tripod height: tripod height = your height minus 30 cm. This value will be the optimal tripod height without taking into account the rise of the center column.

The minimum tripod height is only 7 cm, this is a very good indicator, it can be expanded to zero and removed from ground level. True, for this the central column will need to be moved to a horizontal position.

. The photo shows Manfrotto 055shpro4. But 190Go! can do that too.)

The center column can be rotated 90 degrees (horizontal position). There are no intermediate angles of rotation of the column. The Swivel Column is a very useful option, but there is sometimes an opinion on the web that the central column is a real evil and should be got rid of. Perhaps, but not always.

Firstly, the makers are very fond of it because it allows you to take such angles that will not be available without a column. Secondly: it allows you to take the camera out slightly behind a tripod. For example, you are shooting a landscape from a bridge or a rooftop, there is a fence in front of you that falls into the frame. In this case, you simply push the column out to the side and move the camera out of the fence. At the same time, you yourself do not need to climb the fence, i.e. you are safe filming.

Manfrotto MT190GOA4TB 190 Go

Manfrotto MT190GOA4TB 190 Go

However, in this case, you need to make sure that the tripod does not tip over due to the displacement of the center of mass.

Personally, I am a supporter of universal solutions, when the column can be tilted and removed depending on the task. On many tripods, the column can be removed and reinserted, but this time "upside down", but on Manfrotto 190Go I could not do this, the latch interferes. But, in principle, this is not important, since it is very inconvenient to shoot in such an inverted position.

And finally, the most mysterious value, the carrying capacity. According to the passport, the load on the tripod is as much as 7 kg, but that's just what this figure means and how it was determined, no one explains anywhere. As far as I know, the load capacity of the tripods is not standardized in any way and there are no international test methods for tripods. Therefore, each manufacturer is free to label their products as they see fit. Only one thing can be said with certainty - this is definitely not a strength characteristic.

The tripod is painted black, the individual elements are red. A little poppy color scheme. Apparently, to attract the attention of potential buyers. My personal opinion: any photographic equipment has only one correct color - matte black. Because it doesn't glare. The paint on the legs is powder, and on the rest of the details it is simple, most likely some kind of alkyd. How durable - time will tell.

There is no bubble level for horizontal alignment. Actually, he is not really needed. I don’t remember a single time when I needed it. Leveling is easier with a tripod head or a dedicated level base.

On this, the analysis of the passport values and appearance can be considered complete, I propose to go directly to the inspection of the nodes of the tripod itself.

I have no questions about the build quality. The tripod is well assembled, nothing hangs, no explicit cracks are observed. All legs in the hub are pressed tightly, you can not unscrew them. This means that the tripod does not provide for the possibility of unscrewing one of the legs and using it as a monopod.

The hub (central node) consists of two halves (upper and lower) which are pulled together by three screws.

Manfrotto MT190GOA4TB 190 Go

Manfrotto MT190GOA4TB 190 Go

This is a classic solution by Manfrotto and I have not seen similar designs from other brands. It's neither good nor bad, it's just a feature. I have a Manfrotto 055схpro4 tripod, there is a similar solution, and over the five years of operation, I have never had any problems with the hub, I haven't even tightened the screws. The hub itself is massive and powerful, as it should be, since all the loads are collected here. The legs in the hub are clamped tightly enough, they turn with effort, there are no backlashes. A plastic hook for hanging a load is located on the side of the hub, again - this is a standard Manfroth chip.

And there is also a threaded socket for installing some extra. accessories.

Manfrotto MT190GOA4TB 190 Go

Manfrotto MT190GOA4TB 190 Go

For me personally, this is a completely useless option, it is unlikely that I will ever use it. Although, for someone, perhaps this will be a plus.

The legs have 4 sections (there are no three-knee versions of this tripod) - this is a payback for compactness. Someone will say: “Fi! Any normal tripod should have no more than three sections at its feet. " And somewhere he will be right because the more sections, the smaller the diameter of the tubes from which the legs are made and the more nodes of joint. And this, in turn, affects stability - the smaller the cross-sectional dimensions of the element, the less the moment of inertia, and those who have studied the strength of materials are guided in these issues. True, in that formula, besides the moment of inertia, there is still a lot of things, but this is hardly interesting to anyone. Therefore, let us take it as an axiom: the smaller the diameter of the leg - the worse the stability and rigidity. The diameter of the tubes from which the legs are made also do not stand out and are equal in descending order: 25mm, 22mm, 19mm, 16mm. And the wall thickness of the tubes is only 0,9 mm.

Manfrotto MT190GOA4TB 190 Go

Manfrotto MT190GOA4TB 190 Go

The stability of the 190GO is really not important: when fully extended in height, the tripod legs bend like freshly cut willow twigs even with a little effort. Sadness, because a tripod should not only hold the camera, but also dampen vibrations. And with such a low stability, you can forget about shooting at long exposures, even in a light wind. I see the reason for the low stiffness not only in the small diameter of the tubes, but also in the material of manufacture: the modulus of elasticity of aluminum is low, somewhere two times lower than that of carbon (this is approximately, everything is very difficult for carbon). This means that at the same load and equal cross-sections, the "lumin" bends much more strongly than carbon fiber. But carbon is more expensive and much more. Well, what can you say? To paraphrase a well-known expression in the context of tripods: cheap, stable, compact - choose any two. )
Perhaps I demand too much. In the end, people use all sorts of "stuff" like ManFrotto BeFree and nothing, somehow removed, does not grumble.

Collets are used here as clamps.

Manfrotto MT190GOA4TB 190 Go

Manfrotto MT190GOA4TB 190 Go

I can only welcome this decision. No, I do not want to say that Manfroth clips are bad, not at all. They make clips of quite high quality: the clamps are made of magnesium alloy, they are spring-loaded, the clamping force can be adjusted. And the eccentrics, although plastic, are not afraid of frost - they have been checked many times. Collets are better, though. They are simpler, do not collect dirt (at least not so actively), sand sticks to them less, they tolerate accidental blows painlessly, which means they are more reliable in work. The nut itself is made of aluminum. In general, we set a test here.

We go down further and see that the leg is crowned with a regular rubber tip.

Manfrotto MT190GOA4TB 190 Go

Manfrotto MT190GOA4TB 190 Go

And then an ambush awaits us - he is not removed! More precisely, you can remove it, but only if you use a hacksaw for metal (it is quite possible that I will do so). Hence the question - is it really a travel tripod what does the word “GO” in the title suggest to us? But what about the thorns, at least some? Wasn't it possible to fit the usual rubber plugs and equip the tripod with a set of removable spikes as was the case on the previous models of the 190 and 055 series? It is both simpler and cheaper. Or is it a groundwork for the future, for a new, more "advanced" model?

It remains to calculate the angles of deflection of the legs. There are four of them: 23, 46, 67, 88 degrees. And it's really great because it allows you to set up the tripod as you please. Believe me, I know what I'm talking about: 90% of my shots are at low altitudes or generally at ground level. Most tripods have only three of these angles, while some have two. But a tripod isn't just a temporary support for the camera. This is a device for its precise positioning and the more deflection angles the easier it is to set the camera to the desired position. For those who shoot in the studio it doesn't really matter, but for me it does. I shoot in nature, in the taiga, where something grows at every square centimeter, and the earth itself is far from always even. Placing a tripod in the midst of all this plant diversity can be very difficult. This is where all these angles and independent legs come to the rescue.

Pictured Manfrotto Tripods 055cxpro4 and Gizzo GT2531EX

Pictured Manfrotto Tripods 055cxpro4 and Gizzo GT2531EX

The legs are fixed very reliably, there are no spontaneous snap-offs of the rotation angle clamps, here the guys from Manfrotto did not disappoint.

Now it's time to look at the highlight of this tripod - the swivel assembly. In fact, this is a convenient thing: we press the button at the end of the central column, pull out its top, turn and fix it with a single screw. Everything is simple and convenient, if not for one "but": the good old jamb of such a constructive solution remained in place. I mean there is a noticeable backlash in the column when it is in a horizontal position.

Manfrotto MT190GOA4TB 190 Go

Manfrotto MT190GOA4TB 190 Go

At the same time, no matter how much you tighten the screw, the column still sways a little. And this is not a defect of a specific model, but a common property of all tripods with a similar swivel unit, both old and new. The backlash can be slightly reduced if thin plastic plates are glued into the swivel unit, but you cannot completely remove it. For the sake of fairness, I will say that, in principle, this does not interfere with the shooting itself: the camera presses the column with its weight, choosing the remnants of the backlash. But a fact is a fact and you need to know about it.

And the last thing is the equipment. Everything is simple here - there is none, none at all, if you do not take into account the box, instructions and a plastic bag. However, if you decide to buy this tripod complete with a tripod head, you will be given a cloth bag for storage as a bonus. One involuntarily wants to urge Manfrotto to follow the example of the Chinese brothers, who equip their tripods as if they were sent to war.

Well, to summarize:

Pros:
1. Light weight and compact folded size.
2. Decent build.
3. Completely reliable design.
4. Four angles of deflection of the legs.
5. Swivel center column.
6. Relatively low price.

Cons:
1. Poor stability of the tripod in the extended state.
2. Backlash of the central column in a horizontal position.
3. Absence of thorns.
4. Complete set.

Personally, I have a double impression. I liked the concept itself, but here are some shortcomings that, although they seem small, are annoying.

The following is my opinion based solely on personal experience.

For heavy SLR cameras with large optics, my verdict is that it doesn't fit. Too low stability, and the dimensions are too small. But for UPC systems of the APS-C or 4/3 format with light optics, this is quite a working option. A couple of caveats should be made here: stability is low, provided the tripod is laid out to its full height. But the maximum tripod layout is not always required, often shooting from low points, and the lower the height, the higher the stability. Second point: when shooting indoors or in a wooded area where there is no wind, the requirements for tripod rigidity may be lower. However, if I only have one tripod to choose from, I'll go with my tried and tested Manfrotto 055 carbon fiber, although larger and with clips. And all because it is tougher and dampens vibrations much better. By the way, it weighs the same as 190GO.

Therefore, choosing a compact tripod for the camera, I recommend choosing carbon fiber products. In them, despite the small cross sections of the legs, the rigidity is still higher and is achieved due to the higher rigidity characteristics of the carbon fiber itself.

And yet I bought this 190GO. But I bought it not for the camera, but for the flash. He will play my role as a rack.

Manfrotto MT190GOA4TB 190 Go

I often shoot macro using pulsed light, I carry all my equipment on myself and I just need compactness and light weight and layout options. Well, effective vibration damping is not required here.

That, in fact, is all. Thank you for your attention and successful staff.

But I bought it not for the camera, but for the flash. He will play my role as a rack.

Enchanting. Chinese share for $ 20 as a flash stand does not suit the price?
I use Manfrotto MK190XPRO3-BH, a solid duralumin design. And I will not exchange it for any carbon fiber, especially with collets.

    • Alexey

A strange answer, of course: I am not urging you to change your tripod to carbon and collets. Satisfies the Manfrotto 190, meets your needs - use it and have fun.)
About the rack. You know, this is not a matter of price, but of functionality. If you tell me such a stand that will allow me to position the flash close to the ground at the angle I need, it will fold compactly: I will be happy to take it into service. )

  • Victor

Thanks for the review. It would be nice to look at the photos that you took with this tripod, even empty as a flash holder.
As for the tripods, it all depends on the task. But it's probably better to look towards Gstzo. The quality is much higher there, although the prices are also higher.

    • Alexey

Thanks for your feedback. I have not used this tripod in the field yet as I bought it recently. Now we have a full winter, snow up to the waist and therefore not time for filming. But I have a photo where I used the Manfrotto 055 as a flash holder. And 055 and 190 are complete analogs, differ only in size. If you are interested in the photos obtained with its help, I will give you links.

      • Victor

Not every city has shops where you can see and at least try a tripod. Therefore, such reviews are very useful.
And since there is snow, you can take a picture of a snowflake. In general, for the “makrushnik” the main thing is that there is no wind and the sun is shining, and there will always be plots.
        Give a link.

Great and very interesting review! Many thanks to the author.

  • Obama

    I bought Manfrotto MKCOMPACTACN-BK.
I liked the quick-mount for the camera and one-handed operation (can be rotated in all directions and fixed)

    • Obama

And the price is not very expensive.

  • Jerichosb

Thanks for the review. It's always interesting what's new with tripods. But, I won’t give up his old man Manfrotto 3205G because he is good :)

    • Alexey

      Thanks for the feedback.

  • Oleksandr

Good overview. However, the Chinese luminescent analogue from Aliexpress for 60 bucks is cheaper, and shorter, and more stable, and higher, and with nozzles, and turns into a monopod. Yes, and with a good head included! And with regard to all kinds of covers and bags with which it is supplied - here the Chinese comrades have no equal. And if you take it for a hundred bucks, then even with a “lifetime guarantee” it will be))) True, you have to pay for delivery there now, so prices have increased significantly. Sorry.

  • ULADZIMIR

For its niche is not bad. Lightweight and compact. You can take it to the mountains. Although carbon would be more reliable. Personally, I will die, but I still pull a three-section aluminum for street shooting.

  • AND

It seems that the review is not bad, but without comparison with analogues from other offices it somehow does not look fully.
PS At the very moment, the kit is from the well-known Chinese manufacturer giottos. Legs YTL9253 lumin, 3 sections on clips. Head MH7001-621 ball. Weight is 2 kg, when folded about 65 cm comes out in length, quite overall, but it decomposes quickly, it is convenient to work, for a kit weighing up to 2 kg it handles confidently. Yes, without frills, there is no horizontal position of the central rod, and it is not rebuilt into a monopod, but it is quite well assembled, the price-quality is quite justified in my opinion.

    • Alexey

It would be great to compare this tripod with its analogues, but only where to get them. )

      • anon

There is Weifeng WF6663A. I can upload pictures and characteristics.

        • Alexey

This is not enough. Any equipment is highly advisable to touch with your hands. It is difficult to draw any conclusions from the photo or passport data, unless it’s Gitzo-Systematic. )

Payload - 5 companies (Velbon, Slik, Hakuba, Manfrotto and Gitzo) have signed a uniform testing agreement for heads and tripods (JPVAA S102-2015). Therefore, 40kg from Gitzo can be directly compared to 5kg Velbon or Slik.

    • Alexey

I didn’t know about it. This is good, there will be at least some kind of landmark. Nevertheless, the question remained: both carbon and aluminum 190Go! have a passport load of 7 kg. Those. it turns out that there is no difference: use carbon aluminum. But in fact, the stiffness depends on the elastic modulus (E), and the elastic modulus itself depends on the material.

      • Vladimir

Once again, the previous comment was deleted.
Rigidity is a function of the section, not just the strength of the material itself. A 25 mm duralumin pipe will be several times stiffer than a 12 mm carbon fiber pipe.

        • Alexey

Yes, you may be right, but this statement requires verification by calculation. Stiffness is the product of the modulus of elasticity and the moment of inertia of the cross section. The modulus of elasticity is a characteristic of a material. The moment of inertia is a characteristic of a section. Therefore, the lack of rigidity with a small cross-section can be compensated for by a material with a high elastic modulus.

          • Vladimir

Yes, yes, teach the airplane designer to calculate thin-walled structures. Come on, listen carefully.

            • Alexey

              I give the link:
Strength textbook, section: "Compressed bars stability." Or are there other laws in aviation? )
Honestly, I do not understand your tone.

              • Vladimir

You do not have a rod and not compressed. Look for the right topic in the table of contents of the textbook.

                Here you write nonsense.

Therefore, choosing a compact tripod for the camera, I recommend choosing carbon fiber products. In them, despite the small cross sections of the legs, the rigidity is still higher and is achieved due to the higher rigidity characteristics of the carbon fiber itself.

And I still have the nerve to recommend. The maximum that you can - express your wrong opinion.

              • Alexey

                For Vladimir.
"Dear" specialist! Have you held a lot of tripods in your hands? I suggest you do the following: write your article on how the stiffness of rods or shells (as you wish) depends on the cross-sectional area, its profile and material of manufacture. Write there what you want and how you want. It is very likely that this material will be very helpful. And I see no point in loading readers with unnecessary information, especially since specials will be needed to understand it. knowledge. This is the first thing.
Second. Yes, I have the nerve to recommend carbon tripods. This “audacity” is enough for all those who have used carbon and aluminum tripods in real life. ) I suggest you the following - solve a simple problem. Given: two rods of closed annular section, outer diameter 16 mm, wall thickness 1 mm. One rod in carbon, the other in aluminum. Length - 0,6 m. Find out which of them behaves more rigidly or steadily, it's up to you. Cross-weave carbon. Take the average modulus of elasticity for carbon. The design scheme is an analogue of the tripod leg operation at the minimum deflection angle. And when, Mr. theorist, you prove to me that the "lumin" will behave more steadily and work harder, then I will applaud you.

      • jerichosb

“And finally, the most mysterious value, the carrying capacity. According to the passport, the load on the tripod is as much as 7 kg, but that's just what this figure means and how it was determined, no one explains anywhere ”

        Yeah. Nothing is clear here.
My old Manfrotto 3205G with three sections and a diameter of the first (larger) F27mm has Max Weight Capacity: 11.1 lbs., According to keh.com, how much? ~ 5kg. Where, then, to yours?

        • Gregory

In addition to the 27MM tube, do you have anything else in the tripod? :)) The new 190 series has new locks (clips and collets), a new hub, etc. therefore, the design load is higher. And by the way, a tripod with a camera and cargo will not break if you load more by 0,5 kg.
The tripod tests are carried out as follows: a vibration sensor and a weight on a rope. The rope is cut and vibrations are measured…. So your model withstood a certain amplitude with a 5 kg kettlebell, and a new one with 7 kg, and a Gitzo 0545T with a dead weight of 0,9 kg - 10 kg. Technology does not stand still.

      • Gregory

But the weight of the tripods is different. Why buy a carbon tripod over an aluminum tripod: Even more powerful aluminum tripods (with a higher passport load) in the wind have vibrations much larger than the pixel size of modern cameras. This won't be a problem if you have a 6MP crop camera. But if 24 MP - aluminum will not work in the wind.
Good carbon tripods (like Gitzo) are largely free of this drawback. Their fluctuations under comparable wind loads are less than the pixel size.
Loading the tripods with bags and backpacks leads to even more vibrations from the wind (the windage of the system increases). So if you want to shoot a landscape in different weather conditions, the choice is obvious - Gitzo.

        • Alexey

In fact, in calm weather, you can shoot even with the lightest tripods. Problems begin when there is wind, it is he who is the main culprit for vibration and micro-lubrication. In such cases, I often use a regular umbrella to shield the camera from the wind. And often. in general, I take it out of the tent and then I don't care about the wind. Some people use the so-called stirrup - this is a rigid cord (sling), one end of which is tied in a tripod base, and at the other end it has a loop. The length of the cord is chosen so that it barely reaches the ground. Next, you thread your foot into a loop, press it to the ground with your weight, thereby pulling the cord and pulling the tripod to the ground. In this way, you significantly reduce the vibration of the tripod from the wind.

          • Gregory

Believe it or not, Dmitry Borovkov, the author of the "Stipple" for a tripod, developed it for tripods without a central column. The stirrup is mounted on a central bolt that runs through the Systematic base and holds the head.

Unfortunately, I have seen few landscape photographers who set up their tent for shooting. I have seen animalist photographers, yes, yes. But not landscape ...

            • Alexey

In the landscape, I also do not use a tent, only in a photo shoot. I made myself a stirrup, but I have never used it. Grabbing a regular umbrella.

          • Gregory

In any case, the Manfrotto 190 is a very good model for a first try. But perhaps the following advice will be useful for novice photographers: buying a model is easier, for example Bifriya or 290. To understand whether this path of creativity will be interesting. And if this landscape photography and travel will bring some kind of feedback to save money for a really worthwhile tripod…. For example, as in your photos - Gitzo Explorer, a super tripod for landscape and traveler.

            • Alexey

Yes, the Gitzo Explorer is a tripod standalone.

            • Kiev-Vyshgorod

For beginners, this is MORE than enough! The dream of any "schoolboy"! ;) Obviously, a tripod is “not the last” that is needed for a good shot ... but OH, how far from the first and MOST necessary conditions ...! ;))))) And with good equipment it is always more pleasant to even sit on a bench without doing anything….

          • Kiev-Vyshgorod

There are some nuances at the expense of the flexible stirrup - in the wind the load enters into resonance and begins to add problems ... It is advisable to limit the movement of the load on the stirrup ...

        • Kiev-Vyshgorod

Vibrations depend on the mass - just load the tripod with a bag and there will be no vibrations! The most stable tripod is made of cast iron ...! ;) Any carbon fiber will be exposed to the wind, its high modulus will not help. This is a publicity stunt - a gain in weight by several hundred grams ...?! An extra thermos with coffee and sandwiches is also added to the total weight of the equipment, but WHERE without them ?! But no one buys a titanium or carbon thermos, and even takes drinks with them in glass containers (with stars on the label ...;)) ...

Alexei! Thanks a lot for the article, it came in handy. I still have one question - why do I need a fixing bolt under the head rest. thanks

I bought this tripod to replace the 190 more than a year ago because of its compactness (4 knees versus 3 in the 190). Very stable, the price for it is a lot of weight. Therefore, I only use it for interiors or home portraits.
This mysterious cog just keeps your head almost tight from scrolling.
