Sample photos and image quality

The lens turned out to be quite good, first of all, the sharpness in the center of the frame and small geometric distortions pleases. Super-Multi-Coated TAKUMAR 1: 3.5 / 35 is very sharp on covered diaphragms. Even in the backlight, this old man works tolerably.

Pictures in the gallery were obtained using Canon EOS Digital Rebel Xsi и adapter M42-Canon EF. Photo without processing, on-camera JPEG.

How to use with modern cameras?

Lenses with mounting thread M42 (M42 X 1 / 45.5), such as the lens from this review, are very easy to use on almost any modern digital camera (both SLR and mirrorless), for this it is enough to choose the right adapter (adapter). You do not need to carry out any additional steps to modify the lens.

The cheapest adapters can be found at Aliexpress.com... There are adapters (adapters) with a chip that provide more convenience during shooting, usually chips are used to confirm focus and / or metering exposure, and form the correct EXIF. The chip does not affect the image quality in any way.

For some SLR cameras (for example, with the Nikon F-mount), you need to use adapters with a corrective lens, which allows you to focus correctly at all focusing distances. For any mirrorless cameras, such a lens is not needed, and the adapter is a simple decorated hollow metal tube with an appropriate mount.

For SLR cameras

  1. Canon: For cameras Canon EOS with bayonet mount EF / EF-S need an M42-Canon EOS adapter, such an adapter with a chip can be found herewithout chip here.
  2. NIKON: For cameras Nikon DX / FXas well as for cameras Fujifilm и Kodak with a Nikon F mount, you need an M42-Nikon F adapter, you can buy such an adapter without a lens and a chip here, with a lens without a chip herewith chip without lens here, with lens and chip here. Why a lens? Why chip?
  3. PENTAX: For Pentax cameras with K mount, you need an M42-Pentax K adapter, you can buy such an adapter here.
  4. SONY/MINOLTA: For cameras with a Sony / Minolta A mount, you need the M42-Sony A adapter, you can find such an adapter without a chip at this linkwith a chip at this link.
  5. OLYMPUS/PANASONIC/LEICA: For cameras with a 4/3 bayonet mount (not to be confused with Micro 4/3!) You need an M42-4 / 3 adapter, you can buy such an adapter here.

For mirrorless cameras

  1. SONY: For cameras with 'E'/'FE' mount series SonyNEX и Sony Alpha you need an adapter M42-Sony E (aka M42-Sony Nex), you can find it at this link. An autofocus adapter is also available for these cameras. Techart PRO Leica M - Sony E Autofocus Adapterwhich can be found at this link.
  2. OLYMPUS / PANASONIC / KODAK / XIAOMI: For cameras with a bayonet mount Micro 4/3 (Micro 4:3) you need an adapter M42-Micro 4/3, you can find it at this link.

Thanks for your review! 35 mm required focal ...

  • Dmitriy

All these manual fixes of the 70-90s are becoming a boring and battered topic.
For me, as a regular reader of this photoblog, such reviews have merged into a single whole: oh, here's another fix ... Well, yes, normal, not a nugget, but you can shoot. Through the adapter, clicking each time with a repeater, if any. Guys, when choosing a digital camera, show foresight, look ahead, what you can attach there from modern native glass and how much money it will turn out.
    Sincerely.

    • Michael

The fact of the matter is that all interesting lenses were produced in the 70-90s, where the engineers first of all had the task of creating a good artistic picture. Now all the lenses are sharpened for sharpness, which makes the photo the same and boring.

      • Dmitriy

        I do not agree.
Identical "songs" are sung by the advocates and fans of vintage hi-fi on the respective forums.
A similar solution may be, but only for the first time, when I bought a carcass, money for my native lens has not yet accumulated, and hunting is a photograph.

        • Dim

Nifiga like that, different equipment potential is important for everyone. For example, I bought the a5000 not to have 20 sharp megapixels - my pictures are spinning on the photo frame and I don't sell them. Personally, I needed a small camera for an inexpensive one, from which photos I would not turn out after Nikon DSLRs, it is desirable that the photos would be easy to download and charge just on trips. This Sonya immediately and fully revealed this potential :) even with a whale zoom. A very nice bonus that I kept in mind from the reviews was the ability to work comfortably with old lenses, but I didn't really hope for it. Nevertheless, why do I need a new expensive Zeiss, if I can put old German through an adapter for 1 dollar? Yes, I will lose in efficiency and the pictures will not be super sharp, but for the price of one new lens I can buy about 2 old lenses if I want :), while the result will be better suited for my purposes - I will get pictures from 000-10 old lenses with different patterns and different perspectives, so there will be a lot of marriage, so what? I'm an amateur, I need to learn and enjoy the process, not reduce costs and increase profits.

          • Iskander

Dear, why did Nikon offend you? ...

      • nashua

Well, just, 35mm the main thing is sharpness lack of chromatism and noticeable distortion. Well, the aperture there taxis. 35mm risunkl does not play especially.
And if the requirement for sharpness and distortion is dropped, then the usual universal zoom is enough

    • Dutch

With all due respect, but you measure centimeters with an inch ruler. Just as everyone around you cannot be considered fools, you cannot take the first person you meet as smart. Or a man with a vintage lens on the camera an eccentric. For example, at this stage of my life it became interesting for me to acquire the old optics with its pros and cons simply because it gives a new operating experience and a bit of a peculiar aesthetic pleasure. I like to hold the metal case, consider the movement of the diaphragm, fumble in my hands a leather case with red velvet inside, move the rings of the diaphragm and focus, hear something rustle or click inside, feel the story with my fingertips.
And the articles on this site just help determine the purchase. After all, often I have to order something from another region without seeing the subject of purchase in front of me.
      Nothing that I answer you from 2019? : D

      • Denis

I have been reading you since 2020. Right now I'm buying this beautiful lens on ebee.

  • Noa

I agree, I want more reviews of new lenses. I am very interested in reviews of lenses for the Fujifilm X system. But if no one gives such lenses for reviews, then there are no reviews of them either;)
And thanks for the next review to Arkady; It’s interesting to see what this or that lens is capable of)

    • Dmitriy

If no one gives such lenses (Fujifilm X, etc.), then what is the point of writing irrelevant reviews?

      • Dim

If something seems irrelevant to you personally, this does not mean at all that all other people adhere to exactly the same opinion. Arkady, after all, does not force you to read this site forcibly, you can search the Internet and something else. I know at least one site that is full of reviews of new Fuji lenses, and it’s another thing that few people read these reviews. Probably not interesting? But sites on the old technology are few even on Western sites.

        • Dmitriy

Yes, it is clear that no one forces to read. But even Arkady himself repeatedly noted that he does not have manual optics. Yes, he is a pro, and we are lovers. And then we are guided by whom? Decide Arcadia, is it worth it to spend your precious time ..

          • Dim

Arkady has a cool website - many different optics have been tested by one person, you can at least partially form your own opinion before buying up tons of equipment that may well turn out to be completely unnecessary for a particular person. In this sense, old lenses make it possible to look at it quite cheaply and sometimes even refuse to buy expensive equipment altogether, since the author is really a pro, and I, for example, can, as it turned out, easily do without autofocus.

    • zengarden

Reviews on native Fujifilm lenses are full on the Internet. A certain problem is their cost :) for example, I have only two of them, the most budget ones (16-50 and 50-230).
But the use of manual optics at the BJC Fuji is already more interesting.

      • Noa

Personally, I am interested in both one and the other;)

      • Dmitriy

Why take this Fuji if you then have to sit on two budget winters and non-native manual optics?
Or maybe it was a mistake? You will never squeeze the maximum out of the camera with this optics.

        • Nikolai Fedorovich

Here is the budget zoom at the far end.

        • zengarden

Well, firstly, no one forces you to "sit on two budget zooms"; those who shoot professionally will be able to buy any lens, and they are almost all of excellent quality. And even these budget zooms are at the level of high-quality and expensive lenses from other manufacturers, only dark ones.
Secondly, what does it mean "you will never get the most out of the camera with this optics"? what is the maximum? With your arms straight and the right conditions, you can get great photos. As for manual optics, some old glasses are much more interesting than modern consumer goods (although fuj does not have consumer goods).
And - this is just a hobby that I like :)

        • Victor

Dear, what is “maximum squeeze out of the chamber”? Maybe explain to us, the little-informed, yes, please, with digital calculations, yes, please, also attach YOUR photographic works for persuasiveness!

  • Denis

Are the colors wound in the carcass?
or the camera itself is unsuccessful, but I did not like the photos. sharpness is good

    • Igor

This can lie if the color, then BB, although if on a car then under such lighting all devices do well. Another point is that each personal display screen has its own matrix, namely use Datacolor Spyder for example, they are different 3rd or the next version, it’s not so expensive. Given 7 years ago, calibrate once every half a year.

  • Victor

Reviews are of course necessary. At least for those who have never worked with such optics due to their age, as well as those who are on a tight budget. BUT! Someone here hinted that modern optics are “sharpened for sharpness” ... well, here I am suggesting: test this Takumar with an identical modern lens! Moreover, remove, for example, a fragment of a newspaper sheet (from a tripod, of course, in the studio), enlarge the fragment several times and you will see an amazing picture ... I once had to test two Takumars - 35 / 2.8 and 35 / 3.5 and , I confess that the second "whipped" the first in full ... The same thing happened with Nikkors - 135/2 and 135 / 3.5. so that all questions are usually determined by YOUR PRIORITIES.

    • Vitaliy U

Don’t share your conclusions about 135 current sparing?

      • Victor

Vitaly, if you inform E-mail - I will share my impressions ...

    • Onotole

And 135 cameras are not supposed to be super sharp at all - these are classic portrait photographers, what then, study acne?

  • Artem

    Arkady, thanks for the review!
Great review on a great lens, as for me this old man is very good :)
Thanks to the reviews of Arkady, people can see the lens, they will like it and they will want to buy it :)
This was the case with the old Nikon AF 75-300mm, Lens 2/92 from LETI 60.
I'm sure I'm not the only one :)

  • Igor

A good manual both in color and generally in price, but I heard that red enlightenment has radioactivity and have heard about it more than once from different people.

  • Alexey

Still, old lenses will be relevant for a long time, given the prices of new ones. Especially for the so-called. An “advanced” amateur who does not earn money with photography is in no hurry to go anywhere and can afford to tinker with the manual. And in general it is curious to read how this or that glass in work. Thank you, Arkady, for the review!

    • anonym

Only in Radozhiv one day a review of trash for 10 cents, on the second day of glass apiece of bucks

The funny thing is that in 30 years no one will write reviews about the current modern lenses made of plastic and plastic. They simply will not be. The same topic about hi-fi sound and so on and so on and so forth. Look at the old buick riviera 1972, jag xk, any Ford from the 70s and compare to the current squalor. The world has become disposable like a condom, this is the philosophy of the consumer society. And the old takumar is not, simply, good, and even today, demanded glass is a thing with a soul, which will no longer exist. I have old yashica, zeiss, etc., I click them 10-20 photos a year and I am “happy”. There will be an opportunity, I will also buy takumar, but I will never buy the Canon EF fifty kopeck piece ...

    • Denis

I recall the “Crash test of the old and new Chevrolet”. the advantage of the new car is overwhelming

  • george7

Is it interesting to me alone, or is it really - the image is very transparent with a very beautiful color?
In quality I even liked these photos more than those made with modern lenses.
Or is it affected by the hands of the master?

  • Michael

Quite by chance, I bought Takumar 35. I put it on the Canon 1300D through an adapter. I’m very pleased, but compared to your pictures, I’m not so bright. Maybe nature here is not as bright as in Russia?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Everything is very arbitrary and depends on the settings and location.

Good afternoon, no one will tell you, but with 5 D the mirror will hook or not?

  • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

Takumar from the review will be more interesting than the World 24 N? Perhaps someone compared.

    • Rodion

This one will not be more interesting - it is almost 4 times darker, which is what we are talking about. Here is 35/2 takumar more interesting.

      • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

Radion is grateful to you for your prompt reply.

  • Pavel Gorbunov

    I had such a Takumar
Unfortunately, when buying, I did not notice a small shortage to infinity. As a result, sold.
Now I have a regular "thirty-fiveyatnik" Mir-1A 2,8 / 37, and nothing else is needed, because even Olympus OM Zuiko 2,8 / 35 loses to him. A rare case when Soviet glass covers Japanese glass like a bobby bug))
And Takumar is a nice compact glass for good weather.

    • Rodion

And this despite the fact that 1A is optically identical to the white Mir-1 after 1967 ...
