In short

Nikon Lens Series E Zoom 75-150mm 1: 3.5 (MKII) is an old manual focus telephoto lens designed for Nikon film cameras. The lens uses a PUSH-PULL (trombone) design. Good at open apertures, not bad for his age. It attracts with a constant relative aperture throughout the focal length range, low cost and decent image quality.

'Nikon Lens Series E' lenses are among the simplest Nikon lenses. These lenses were used as accessories for entry-level Nikon film cameras (Nikon Super Compact Bodies: EM, FG, FG20). The 'E' series can be safely called the whale lenses of its time. They were designed as low cost lenses for a wide range of users. Typically these lenses had slightly poorer body and optics quality than the more advanced Nikon lenses. Nevertheless, the 'E' series is appreciated by many amateurs for its light weight and good image quality. None of the 'E' series lenses no name 'Nikkor', which refers to all 'real' lenses from Nikon. Most likely this lens for Nikon was made by third-party manufacturers. The 'E' is most likely associated with Nikon's first low-cost EM camera, for which a line of similar lenses was developed in the first place.

Nikon 75-150 / 3.5 is an AI lens and can be easily mounted to any modern Nikon DSLR camera.

Nikon Lens Series E Zoom 75-150mm 1: 3.5 is very similar to its old brother - Nikon Zoom-NIKKOR 80-200mm 1: 4.5. Lenses have the same control, and the same optical scheme is taken as the basis.

Assembly, control, focus

Lens body made very high quality. The diameter of the filter for the front lens, as for a lens of this type, is generally tiny and is only 52 mm. The piston ring and diaphragm are not rubberized. During focusing and changing the focal length, the rear lens of the lens remains stationary. When changing the focal length, the lens length does not change.

One ring is responsible for focusing and changing the focal length. To change the focal length, pull or push the piston ring, to focus - rotate it. Nikon 75-150 / 3.5 uses'reversible PUSH-PULL'- the maximum focal length value is available when the piston ring is closest to the camera mount.

Nikon 75-150 / 3.5 focus ring rotates approximately 180 degrees. During focusing, the front lens rotates and extends forward. On the case there is a focus distance scale, the depth of field scale (in the form of colored stripes) and a label for working in the infrared spectrum. The lens has a hard stop (hard infinity mechanical stop) which allows you to accurately and quickly focus the lens to infinity under any external temperature conditions.

Nikon 75-150 / 3.5 has a pronounced 'Focus Breathing' effect (changing the viewing angle during focusing). During focusing towards the MDF, the viewing angle decreases. Due to the fact that the focus ring is wide enough and has a large and smooth stroke, the effect of 'Focus Breathing' is almost not noticeable during focusing.

Unfortunately, the lens changes the focal length under the weight of its own piston. Effect spontaneous piston movement on the copy from the review expressed very, very strong. Rumor has it that in the first version of this lens (without a chrome ring) this effect is not pronounced.

How to use Nikon manual lenses (such as this one without CPU and with manual focus) on any modern Nikon digital SLR camera or on 'Nikon 1' system cameras, described in the 'manual optics'. Older lenses are sometimes watched by owners of Canon cameras, who can use them on their cameras no worse than on their Nikon cameras. To do this, just use the adapter Nikon - Canon. Of course, manual lenses from SLR cameras can also be used on any mirrorless cameras with the help of an adapter.

Image quality

First of all, I want to note that the f / 3.5 aperture, in terms of sharpness, is working across the entire range of focal lengths. On the covered diaphragms Nikon 75-150 / 3.5 can pleasantly surprise.

The weak point is the work in the backlight (example) and frying. Non-rounded aperture blades can create nuts. In general, the lens has a nice bokeh.

The relative aperture of 1: 3.5 is only one and a half times less than 1: 2.8. At the same time, the cost of zoom lenses from 1: 2.8 is several times higher. In sunny weather, F / 3.5 allows the use of very short excerpts at low ISO, which makes shooting comfortable, and you should not worry about blurry images due to shake. On ISO 200 and F / 3.5, I often used a shutter speed of 1/2000 second.

Results

The strength of Nikon Lens Series E Zoom 75-150mm 1: 3.5 is its good sharpness, especially on covered apertures. It is very difficult to find a cheaper lens with a constant aperture F / 3.5 over the entire range of focal lengths. The weakest side is the spontaneous movement of the piston and poor resistance to flare. I recommend this lens for leisurely creative shooting.

    Thanks for the next review!
I can’t confirm, but I have repeatedly met in English-speaking forums that this zoom for Nikon was released by Kiron.

  • Miroslav

Sometimes I use it, in the mood, with such a lens. Excellent condition, despite the age, a nice picture.

Very nice device. Thanks for the review.

"The piston and diaphragm ring is not rubberized." My lens has a rubberized piston ring. Perhaps this lens has polymerized and looks like plastic due to its age. My copy has a black diaphragm ring and there is a spontaneous change in focal length under its own weight, but this is not critical and I read on one foreign forum how to replace a felt pad between moving parts. With this lens I use a metal hood from Jupiter 37-AM MC, it fits perfectly and it is possible to screw it into the transport position. I really like the picture this lens creates. He became one of my favorites. I use it in conjunction with Nikon D7000 without Lushnikov's chip.

Nikon 75-150mm f / 3.5 Series E AI-s I like this lens on the D7000. I love old lenses. Lightweight lens, quickly focuses by changing the FR. Nice to shoot
Macro and portraits. On Df, not as good as on D7000.

class review .. bought .. by 5tr already 2 ... a second as a gift to a friend .. everything coincided with what you said above ... a very sharp buzzer, but both copies are tight on zooming ... new paint as soon as from the factory is bright and not faded.

One ring for zoom and focus is very convenient for me, and sharpness is not inferior to Ob-you at times more expensive. Pay attention to the eBay market, only 2-3 pieces!

The photographs shown here show that this lens delivers great pictures in technical and aesthetic terms. The images are voluminous; on the open aperture, the background separates very well from the foreground. And again, we have a review of the full-frame lens on the tilted camera, and this is bad because in fact we see images obtained from the central part of the lens.

  • Nicholas

Tell me, plizz, do friends in the Middle Kingdom have a lens hood for this lens? But not just a hood, but so that as with the Yu-37 it was possible to wind up in a transport position.
    Thank you

Despite the presence of a fast autofocus telephoto zoom, I use this lens with pleasure. Sharp with a nice picture, but the bokeh is a little rude. The main advantage is compactness and light weight. You don’t always want to carry 1.5kg, if you don’t know how it can come in handy. It is convenient for use both on FF and on a crop. Even on the BZK crop-2 I put it sometimes, like a telephoto lens
