Nikon DX VR AF-P Nikkor 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6G and camera Nikon D3400

In short

Nikon AF-P 18-55 / 3.5-5.6G VR - the fifth generation of standard lenses for cameras Nikon DX... The first lens in the Nikon AF-P series. In general - good full-time lens. There must be a clear understanding that the whale lenses (supplied lenses) are the simplest in the entire line of zoom lenses Nikon DXand therefore you should not expect high performance from them. These are lenses for a wide range of tasks, they are great for amateur everyday shooting. However, the Nikon AF-P 18-55 / 3.5-5.6G VR surprised with its sharpness on a 24 MP camera with an APS-C sensor.

Nikon AF-P 18-55 / 3.5-5.6G VR usually comes with some entry-level SLR camera. In such a kit, its cost is low.

And now about the sad:

  • Nikon AF-P 18-55 / 3.5-5.6G VR will not work correctly on any Nikon camera released before Nikon D5200 (in fact, until 2013). The lens will not focus either automatically or manually. There is no complete compatibility data with some older cameras.
  • On some older cameras, automatic or manual focusing will work, but it will not be possible to control the stabilizer.
  • To control the stabilizer on some older cameras, you will need to perform a firmware update.

History

Nikon AF-P 18-55 / 3.5-5.6G VR and his twin brother Nikon AF-P 18-55 / 3.5-5.6G (without VR) were presented on January 4, 2016, but they found practical application only after they began to complete the camera with these lenses Nikon D3400, which went on sale only in the fall of 2016.

A line of standard (i.e. 'whale') class 18-55 / 3.5-5.6 lenses for cameras Nikon DX:

  1. Nikon 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6G ED AF-S DX Nikkor SWM Aspherical - first version. It was produced from 2005 to 2006. It exists in two colors - black and gray / silver. Announced with the camera Nikon D50.
  2. Nikon 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6GII ED AF-S DX Nikkor SWM Aspherical - second version. It was produced from 2006 to 2007. There are no serious differences from the first version, the lenses use the same optical circuit. It exists in two colors - black and gray / silver. Announced with the camera Nikon D40.
  3. Nikon 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6G VR AF-S DX Nikkor SWM Aspherical - third version. It was produced from 2007 to the present day. Has a built-in image stabilizer (Nikon VR, Vibration Reduction). Unlike the first two, it does not have 'ED'-elements in its optical scheme. Announced with the camera Nikon D60.
  4. Nikon 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6GII VR II AF-S DX Nikkor - the fourth version. It has been produced since 2013. Unlike the third version, it has a new optical circuit and can be folded compactly for transportation. Updated stabilization system. For the first time he could be seen with a camera Nikon D3300.
  5. Nikon DX AF-P Nikkor 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6G - fifth version. Available since January 2016. It has a new optical circuit and a new stepper focus motor. Went on sale with the camera Nikon D3400.
  6. Nikon DX VR AF-P Nikkor 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6G - the sixth version. The same as the fifth version, but with a built-in image stabilizer. It was presented simultaneously with the fifth version. Went on sale with the camera Nikon D3400.
  7. Nikon Nikkor Z DX 16-50 1: 3.5-6.3 VR - seventh version, for mirrorless cameras such as Nikon z50... Available from Fall 2019. New optical design, foldable body, reduced aperture and built-in image stabilization.

Sigma at one time produced an interesting alternative to similar whale lenses in the face of a faster Sigma Zoom 18-50mm 1: 2.8-4.5 DC OS HSM.

Nikon DX VR AF-P Nikkor 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6G and camera Nikon D3400

Unlike the previous version of GII VRII

Key differences from the previous model Nikon AF-S 18-55 / 3.5-5.6GII VR II:

  • the diameter of the filter increased from 52 to 55 mm
  • increased weight by 10 grams
  • focus motor has changed
  • focus speed is much higher
  • focus ring has become electronic
  • there was a function of holding focus while changing the focal length (parfocality), very important when shooting a video
  • there was a function of constant manual focus control M / A
  • lost focus mode switches and stabilizer
  • The optical design has changed. Another aspherical element added to the optical circuit
  • the new model is not compatible with cameras released before 2013

In general terms, the new lens is better than its predecessor.

Nikon DX VR AF-P Nikkor 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6G lens

Assembly

Nikon AF-P 18-55 / 3.5-5.6G VR assembled in Thailand. The lens uses a plastic bayonet mount, such a bayonet mount is the first sign that the user has a lens from the simplest Nikon Nikkor line of lenses.

Focusing ring plastic, without rubber inserts. zoom ring covered with rubber.

During a change in focal length, the front of the body frame (trunk) moves in a wave-like fashion. The retractable body frame part consists of only one section.

When changing the focal length, the rear lens moves in the middle of the lens body like a pump - it draws in and pushes out air. This behavior of the rear lens is called 'vacuum cleaner effect', which can increase the amount of dust that accumulates in the camera. See the effect of a vacuum cleaner with a lens Nikon 18-105mm f / 3.5-5.6G can here. Nikon AF-P 18-55 / 3.5-5.6G VR has such an effect much lower. From the side of the rear lens (when it is deepened), the lenses and other lens fillings are visible at the lens.

On the back of the lens is a small rectangular hood that cuts off excess light and prevents flare.

Nikon DX VR AF-P Nikkor 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6G lens

Nikon DX VR AF-P Nikkor 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6G lens

L button

To start using the lens, you must first unlock it. To do this, you have to press a special button that holds the lens in the 'L' position ('Locked' - 'Locked'), located on the zoom ring and rotate it toward the 18 mm mark, after which a slight click will be heard. To fold the lens, just press the button in exactly the same way and turn the zoom (zoom) ring in the opposite direction. When folded, the lens is noticeably shorter than in the working, with a protruding trunk.

On camera Nikon D90 and, most likely, on many other old cameras, when folded, the camera “does not see” the lens, but in the value field aperture the error 'F - -' blinks. Also, when folded in the viewfinder, everything is blurry.

On camera Nikon D3400, and most likely, on many other modern cameras, when the lens is folded, the camera displays the message "Before you start taking pictures, rotate the zoom ring to lengthen the lens."

UPDATE, critical error

With heavy use, the lens will wear out and the position lock will stop working. This is fraught with the fact that after rotating the zoom ring from 55 to 18 mm, it does not stop (abuts) at the value of 18 mm, but continues to rotate to the folded position. This is very annoying and very disruptive to shooting. The photographer thinks that he has set the widest possible angle of view, but in fact crossed the 'L' line and received a message that the lens is not extended and shooting is prohibited. I think this is a very serious problem with this lens.. I observed this situation with lenses with a range of over 60.000 frames.

Nikon DX VR AF-P Nikkor 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6G lens

Stabilizer

Nikon AF-P 18-55 / 3.5-5.6G VR uses a stabilizer with the same efficiency as in the previous model Nikon AF-S 18-55 / 3.5-5.6GII VR II. The stabilizer allows you to get 4 steps of compensation excerpts. In numerical terms, this means that you can shoot at shutter speeds 16 times longer than what a lens without a stabilizer requires. For example, when shooting stationary subjects at 55 mm of focal length, instead of being limited to 1/60 sec., You can shoot at 1/4 sec.

The stabilizer works well. The stabilizer can track the movement of the camera while shooting panoramas.

Important: for cameras that were presented before the release of Nikon D3400, and which are compatible with this lens, you should update the firmware to be able to control the stabilizer from the menu. These cameras include models D3300, D5500, D5300, D5200, D7200, D7100 (possibly others, there is no exact data). This is due to the fact that the lens does not have a stabilizer switch. The stabilizer needs to be turned on or off only using the camera menu.

Focusing

Nikon AF-P 18-55 / 3.5-5.6G VR and Nikon AF-P 18-55 / 3.5-5.6G Are the first lenses to use Nikon's new 'P' focus motor. Lenses are now labeled with a new abbreviation AF-P: 'Auto Fear Pulse motor '-' pulsating focusing motor '. The new 'Pulse Motor' is actually a Stepping Motor.

Canon has long implemented such motors in its whale lenses. First model Canon Zoom Lens EF-S 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6 IS STM (STepper Motor) was introduced at the beginning of 2013.

The focus motor is very quiet. Auto Focus Speed - Fast (closer to very high).

When used on a camera Nikon D3400 with unpretentious Multi-CAM 1000 focusing system the lens behaves well, rarely focuses incorrectly. I had no problems with focus accuracy and focus.

On camera Nikon D3400 I checked the presence of back and front focus at different focusing distances and different focal length values (infinity and MDF as well). As a measure, the images were taken using the Live View mode (which actually does not suffer from back / front focus). Focusing accuracy using a center cross-type phase focusing sensor was exactly the same as in Live View.

The lens does not have a focus mode switch. To put the lens in manual or automatic focus mode, use the camera menu. In auto focus mode can be supported focus mode 'M / A'... To do this, activate the 'Manual focus ring' item in the camera menu. at AF '. In 'M / A' mode, autofocus works with constant manual focus priority. 'M / A' mode very convenient and useful - for manual focusing or focus correction, you do not need to additionally put the lens in the 'M' mode using the camera menu.

During focusing, the front and rear lenses remain stationary, as the lens uses internal focus 'IF'-'Iinternal Focus' - 'Internal Focusing' (this abbreviation is used on the official website). Thus, it is possible to use any filters without problems, for example polarizing or gradient.

Nikon AF-P 18-55 / 3.5-5.6G VR uses electronic focus ring. The ring rotates freely without locking in the extreme positions. In manual focus mode, the ring actively rotates about 120 degrees. During auto focus, the focus ring remains stationary. The focus ring travel is very smooth and pleasant (almost like with old manual lenses). On cameras D810, Nikon D810a, Df,  D750D7200D7100, D5200 the focusing distance previously set by auto focus will be lost when the camera exits standby mode.

The closest focusing distance is only 24 cm. Nikon AF-P 18-55 / 3.5-5.6G VR focuses closer than other similar lenses, while the maximum zoom ratio (important for macro photography) is 1: 2.6.

Auto focus with AF-P lenses will only work with cameras (exact list):

D5200, D5300, D5500, D5600, D3300, D3400, D3500, D7100, D7200, D7500, D500 + D4, D4s, D5D6, Df, D800, D800E, D810, D810a, D850, D750, D780, D600, D610 + Nikon z6, Nikon z6 ii, Nikon z7, Nikon z7 ii, Nikon z5, Nikon z50 with adapter FTZ

Important: some of these cameras will need to use the latest firmware.

Auto and manual focus will not work with cameras (exact list):

D700, D3, D3s, D3x, D1, D1h, D1x, D2x, D2h, D2xs, D2hs, D100, D200, D300, D300s, D50, D70, D70s, D80, D90, D7000, D40, D40x, D60, D3000, D3100, D3200, D5000, D5100 + Fujifilm FinePix S1 Pro, S2 Pro, S3 Pro, S3 Pro UVIR, S5 Pro, IS Pro + Kodak DCS PRO 14n и Kodak DCS Pro SLR / n.

Features:

  • There is no depth of field scale, focusing distance and mark for working in the infrared spectrum. There is nothing at all, except for the focal length marks.
  • Focus shift (shift-focus) was not noticed during operation and testing.
  • During focusing on the MDF, the distance from the front lens to the subject is approximately 10 cm.
  • The lens has an effect 'Focus breathing'(changes in viewing angle during focusing).
  • While changing the focal length, the lens holds the focus distance (electronic analogue of the parfocal lens).

Nikon DX VR AF-P Nikkor 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6G lens. Minimum trunk length when unfolded.

Image quality

The quality depends very much on the settings of the camera or the original RAW Converter, allowing you to automatically correct some lens flaws (geometric distortion, vignetting, chromatic aberration).

There is nothing more difficult than writing about the image quality produced by kit lenses, especially when you know about the capabilities of modern 'real' lenses. However, I would like to point out that the lens is surprisingly sharp in the center of the frame even from open apertures. This is one of the sharpest whale lenses I've shot.

As befits a modern lens, the Nikon AF-P 18-55 / 3.5-5.6G VR behaves well in backlight.

In general, the image quality is at a decent level.

My experience

Nikon AF-P 18-55 / 3.5-5.6G VR did not start on my Nikon D90. Nikon had little to pervert Nikon D40 (lost compatibility with a huge amount of optics), now it has touched its whale lenses.

Nikon AF-P 18-55 / 3.5-5.6G VR itself is good, the Nikon system, with its amateur cameras, is strange and illogical.

On the official website there are simultaneously 5 relevant models of the class 18-55 / 3.5-5.6 (proof screen, link), users can choose for themselves any color and taste.

The electronic focus ring, the absence of switches and the parking system make modern lenses more and more similar to their mirrorless counterparts.

Nikon AF-P 18-55 / 3.5-5.6G VR is a good lens as the first and only one bought with a modern amateur camera. Who just wants to buy a DSLR camera with this lens - feel free to buy. Who knows a lot about photography - look for something else.

  • Alex

Good afternoon! Tell me, who knows why such a problem. I have NIKON D5300. I installed an updated firmware version on it (from 1.00 I upgraded it to 1.01). When you attach this lens now (18-55 AF-P VR), the “Optical VR” column is added to the “Shooting menu”. It (stub) can be activated or deactivated, respectively. But, with all this, in the same “Shooting Mode Menu” the ability to activate the “Auto. distortion control ”. This column remained in the menu, but it was darkened, and now it cannot be turned on and activated. When I put other lenses on, this function works without problems

    • Arkady Shapoval

      1. Or is it always on for this lens by default
      2. Or Nikon screwed up again.

      • Alex

I have another version, and therefore this function does not work. (Well, as an assumption ...) On the NIKON website, in an article about this lens in the general text I noticed the following phrase - “... Two aspherical lenses installed in this lens minimize spherical aberrations and other types of distortions, allowing ... (well, etc.). Is this the reason? By the logic of manufacturers, having a new optical scheme, this lens automatically removes various distortions by default. Therefore, this function as a separate option, in general, is not needed anymore ??

        • Arkady Shapoval

In fact, this is just a beautiful fairy tale about aspherics, but how can they still write without praising the lens. At Sony E 3.5-5.6 / PZ 16-50 in optics there are as many as 4 aspherics, while the barrel there is 16 mm so strong that I want to cry.

          • Alex

Perhaps I do not argue. Maybe so .. Well, as we say - "I bought for sho, and sell for that." In marketing without "fairy tales" - no way ... If you write everything as it is - sales will fall .. Hence - "Even brighter, more transparent, even richer .." (In general - some epithets.) And in the "bottom line" - zilch ... Well, returning, in fact, to the essence of the question, I think that this is, as Arkady said, “the default feature”. And in order to somehow explain it (trick) - they beautifully told about the aspheric ... I don't see any other intelligible motives for such an "upgrade"

            • Alex 2

By the way, the toggle switch for switching the stub and focusing modes was also removed from the lens (now through the menu) ... Why ?? And who knows ... On the official website it says - "in order to improve the usability of the lens." It is difficult to say which of the users these tumblers interfered with ... (For some reason, I remembered a common phrase from the times of developed socialism - “Going towards the wishes of the working people ...”). Although, in reality, no “working people” to the party and government expressed any “wishes”. So it is here. They just ... put it before the fact, and that's it.

          • koba

these are not real aspherics, but simple glued ones, that is, in fact, good plastics ...

      • Alex 2

Understood, it worked. The problem was due to firmware

    • Alexey

Most likely the second update has not been downloaded. The base for automatic distortion is sewn separately. I checked on the D5300, everything works.

      • Alex 2

If not difficult, please clarify what you mean by the phrase “second update”? I bought my d5300 in 2015. It had firmware 1.00. Recently I bought myself 18-55 AF-P, under it from the office. Nikon's site downloaded firmware 1.01. Now you can activate VR, (but distortion control, as I already wrote, is not available). What firmware (number) do I need to install in order for everything to work correctly? Tell me please

        • Alexey

Distortion Control Data Ver.2.015 lies next to the main firmware.

          • Alex 2

Thanks, figured out the second update. Installed, now the function “Aut. rev. distortion ”works

    • Alexander

Strange, but the Nikon D7200 does not have an Optical VR option for this lens. In Google they say that it is only in the models 3000 and 5000. A very strange decision. Well, yes for the lens for 2000 UAH excusable.

  • Alex

Nafig need such "happiness". Nikon made a "present" to his users in honor of his 100th birthday. A lens that is attached only to newer camera models. Just super! I'm afraid that this greediness will continue to spread to all new models of lenses and Nikon cameras.
    Thank you!

    • Denis

then only the lens remains in production to stick on superglue

      • Sergei

You can’t say better. Nikon has not ceased to amaze recently. Canon, when a pig was planted by users in terms of compatibility of optics, even though it changed the mount, which allowed to obtain advantages in the future. And to make just a software restriction, I don’t know .. Mechanically, everything too, even this antediluvian jumper, could have done at least electronic control ..

    • Alex 2

Yeah ... It is difficult to explain such "actions" of such a respected company by normal human logic. The situation is very similar to that which developed in one respected football team. As Lobanovsky died, the Game did not become. Some kind of constant rearrangements, castling of coaches and line-up, but the result is zero ... So it is with Nikon, apparently. Their management, apparently, understands that “we need to do something and move somewhere” .. But from the “set of roads to choose the right one”, alas, they still do not work out .. This is the result of “jumping in place and running to the side” ..

      • Alex 2

As for the lenses, actually. At the moment Nikon has rolled out a "trial balloon" in the form of a "whale" and "telezum" AF-P series to the market. In principle, the lenses themselves are not bad (apart from the "jamb" in terms of incompatibility with early models of devices). Perhaps, they decided to test new technologies on budget lens models, to find out the public opinion, before launching more professional lenses with AF-P technology. In general, the release of the third lens will show everything. If we eliminate this "jamb" with incompatibility "- well, if not ...

        • Denis

Well, it’s unlikely that they are studying people's opinions.
they themselves shape the needs of people. like Apple with iPhones

          • Alex 2

Well, yes, basically ... The point is, I mean, the whole history of marketing (in any brand) is a history of compromise. A compromise is a situation where both parties (in this case, the manufacturer and the consumer) are not 100% satisfied. Manufacturers want to invest less in production, but sell at a higher price, and buyers want to “buy a Mercedes, but at the price of Tavria”. This is the age-old problem. With regards to the photo, Nikon also has Bodies, which are close to the concept of “ideal camera” (I mean D500 and D5). In these models it is very difficult to find fault with something. The only question is the price. If the manufacturer starts making models in which all inclusive (all inclusive) in the price range from 300 to 500 USD (for example), then the above-mentioned professional models will “sadly gather dust on the shelf” ... Therefore, the company (most likely) and there is an unspoken policy of “artificial limitation of opportunities” in order to encourage potential buyers to take out their wallet more often. If “everything fits everything,” then who will go to the shops?

            • Alex 2

I remembered an old Odessa anecdote: “Guests come and sit at the table. The owner asks - Did you wash your hands with soap? - Yes! "Well, then you will drink tea without sugar!" It is unlikely that the reputable company Nikon knows this anecdote, but judging by their latest “marketing achievements” (D3400, 18-55AF-P, etc.), this is the case ..

          • Alexey

I doubt that incompatibility is a jamb, it is rather a deliberate step designed to stop people chasing old BU cameras. The only jamb is the extremely inconvenient disconnection of the stub, but I think it will be corrected, a lot of people complain to them about this point. On the other hand, for example, I saw the pluses in these lenses, the error of the autofocus error is linear at all focal lenses, and not like in AF-S, at different focal points it is either a plus or a minus.

            • Denis

of course a jamb. first they dragged the entire optics park (unlike the canon), and then they took and refused. then they themselves will get confused, which is compatible with

              • Alexey

Most likely the jamb is that they dragged the optics park for a long time and everyone got used to it. You are, in general, strange people, where did you get the idea that there will be lifelong support for modern equipment with equipment that has been discontinued and supported? I'm curious why no one writes angry letters, say, to melkosoft due to the fact that win98 still does not support usb3, or google screaming why android 4 has not been updated to android 7 ... This is just an example showing the absurdity of this kind of claims. The manufacturer announced incompatibility, but he could have forgotten ... buy a camera with which it will be compatible, there is no money to buy, use what you have. All these screams will not make the new whales compatible with the old cameras.

              • Alexey

And by the way, not the entire fleet of old optics operates on digital mirrors, there is optics compatible in the mount, but with a different working length. Let Nikon and put the blame.

              • Denis

the jamb was exactly that dragged when it was not needed. and this makes it difficult to do, for example, fast lenses.
I am a lover. I don’t have an old park at all. and I don’t worry that lenses and carcasses become obsolete. It scares me a bit that in the future I will not be able to get a battery or a flash drive, and both of my cameras will have to be thrown out
and let Nikon upset, not me, because I won’t buy new lenses for my old camera, but I’ll go buy a used one (I don’t need it yet)

              • Alexey

I doubt that Nikon will be upset, because the sale of a used lens that you buy almost certainly implies the purchase of a new one by a person who got rid of the old one. As for cards and batteries ... According to our laws, Nikon declares the supply of spare parts within 10 years from the moment the camera was launched. If, say, batteries are no longer available on the D3100 within 10 years, then all this is perfectly resolved through the courts, for example, I had a similar case with other equipment, well, they stopped supplying spare parts within the declared 8-year period, a calm conversation with the representative office and I was given a modern technique, since no one has canceled the laws.

              • Alex 2

Developing the topic of "compatibility and incompatibility", I want to express my vision of this problem. I think any brand (and not only “photographic”) is periodically faced with the dilemma - “compatibility or new technologies”. The fact is that each chosen path has its own pitfalls. If you follow the path of “maximum compatibility”, then it is difficult to introduce new innovations. (The client is dissatisfied, his favorite brand is technically lagging behind the competition). If the company tries to work ahead of the curve, then it is really difficult to maintain "compatibility" (purely for technical reasons). The client is again unhappy - they are trying to buy a new one, but it is "incompatible" with the old one. You can, of course, try and "mold" a kind of "hybrid harvester", which will combine both the new and the old. But will the client like this “creation”? Let me give you an example. In the 80s, cassette audio players were fashionable. Then in the 90s they were replaced by CD-players. Then, in the 2000s, small, compact MP-3 players began to appear. Progress does not stand still. And now everyone is calmly wearing small, comfortable MP-3 players, and no one is outraged that they do not have "compatibility" with CDs and audio cassettes. Well, let's say, some company (SONY, for example) for the sake of fun will release such a "monster" in which there will be an MP-3, and a slot for CD, and for audio cassettes with reels? How many people want to buy themselves "this unit"? I don’t think so .. So, alas, users only have to make a little “noise”, and go buy new, “improved” devices. And if you don't like products in the “budget segment”, buy more expensive professional cameras and glasses.

              • Alex 2

Complementing Denis's words, I will note that for more than 50 years Nikon (unlike Kenon) has been “dragging” the entire fleet of his optics, making it some kind of “chip” of his own. An inexperienced user can sometimes get the impression that “everything fits everything” (during this period). Of course, in reality, things are not so rosy. Unlike Kenon, Nikon has not changed over the years only the mount design. That is, in other words, any optics with a Nikon bayonet (released during the specified period) will fit on a modern carcass without any problems. The question is, what functions will be available for use? So we can only talk about “conditional compatibility”, or “partial”. And, what's more interesting, there is a certain factor, relatively speaking, “one-way compatibility”. What I mean. You can put glasses of the past years on a new, modern camera and work with almost all of them (albeit in the manual, but still). And new lenses (as we are seeing now) with old cameras, alas, will not work at all. Even manually. As the reader correctly noted, most likely, this is such a subtle “push” of people to buy new cameras.

              • Onotole

                Turned everything upside down.
Nikon dragged, dragged, and so far there are no prerequisites for stopping in the near future to drag the entire 50+ year old optics park. The fact that new lenses do not fit old cameras does not contradict this statement.
Optics are the main thing, lenses are for life, cameras (especially digital ones) are almost a consumable.
New cameras (well, except for younger amateur ones) continue to support old lenses, what else is needed?

              • Dim

What a theater of trolls, or a performance of one troll. There is such a character on Trunk Slavik, he knows how to create such a sickening atmosphere that he literally turns out from reading the comments. We also managed to pile on Sony a bunch in passing - it’s impossible not to pour cocoa on a neighbor. I wonder what exactly it was dragging and where, by the way, this same Sony, if my Schneider Radionar, originally from the 30s of the last century, can be put on a Sony a 5000 through a penny adapter, focus on the sharpness and take a great photo, but not on Nikon D 40, such a focus will not work on D 300 - there is a special segment and a corrective lens is needed, exposure metering does not work there and a chip is needed to deceive the camera's automation. The most interesting point is that Sony was formed in 1946, and Nikon 1917? So why exactly Sony cameras have no problem with Schneider, which was founded in 1913? The first digital camera Nikon was released in 1999 2017-1999 = 18 years old, about what a deep and ancient history, it takes quite a bit - it is not a sin to get lost in such a “huge” historical period.

          • Alexey

They’re just studying the opinions of people, but in order to become a person from their point of view, you must have at least professional equipment, they don’t consider us poor owners of younger crops. This can be seen in everything, recently did alignment of the crop + 35mm dx and d750 + 24-70. A professional kit after adjustment just hits the target, and an amateur kit with a slight back focus and this is considered the norm, because it gets into the flu and does not want to do fine-tuning, they say, within the tolerance. It’s the same when you contact a representative office on a problem or voice your wishes.

            • Denis

maybe an amateur crop, in principle, can’t exactly hit the target, like a professional, by design features

              • Alexey

In principle, it can, if the owner of an amateur crop is ready to spoil the nerves of himself and the service. From experience I’ll say that even 18-55 can hit the target very accurately after an hour of hassle in the service.

              • Alexey

In general, this whole situation very clearly shows the division into people and beggars. Half of the planet has been crying for them for many years - adjust the autofocus on the younger crops ... Make a lossless compression of the rav, and not a jeep disguised as a rav ... Fig, let the client tremble, but they basically won't do it.

              • Denis

Well then, the question is, why does an amateur need it. my 18-55 on D5100, it seems to me, hits right on target. I'm not complaining about 50mm F / 1.8G either - I am satisfied with the focus accuracy. the colors are not very good, but it does not adjust in the service

              • Denis

I checked another 35mm F / 1.8G DX with a ruler. a colleague from work doubted his focus, he did not like his photo on the D3200. so it is either front or back - this is definitely not regulated by the adjustment in the carcass. I do not see this as a problem, everything is within reason

              • Alexey

The D3x00 is another sad story ... Any lens with a certain level of chromatic aberration and soapiness will behave exactly this way in the open - either front or back. And for example, 1-1.5 mm of a stable slip does not suit me, it crawls out sideways under certain conditions and does not care that this slip fits into the grip, hands, or rather legs, will reach the service, I will endure their brain so that they can correct it. As they say to each his own, someone and technical alcohol is elite alcohol ...

              • Denis

I incomprehensibly put it. on the D5100 + - I couldn’t exactly get there, maybe the lighting was insufficient. most importantly, I realized that his lens is normal, I just want some kind of absolute image quality, excellent sharpness, no noise and natural color

  • B. R. P.

There is no soap or sugar for you ...

  • Eugene

Hello! I believe that the main feature of the lens is its adaptability for shooting videos. Maybe there is an opportunity to supplement the review about the quality of autofocus in the show mode compared to AF-S?

    • Alexey

So it is written that he holds the focus when changing the focal length, which is good for the movie. I’ll add that the focus in LV will be more dependent on the camera, because in real time the picture is analyzed, the faster the camera, the faster the focus, so it won’t be faster, there are changes, but almost imperceptible, the accuracy is absolutely the same except that the noise is much less than that of AF-S, which is again good for cinema. And on this, as it were, miracles should not be expected.

      • Alex 2

That's right, there are changes, but minor ones (as it was rightly noted, more useful for videographers). I just want to remind you. that the 18-55 AF-P is a “budget kit lens”. And that, as they say, says it all. Do not wait for technical breakthroughs and “stunning changes in quality” from “glass” from the budget segment of 50-100 USD. In principle, there is no such thing as a "top kit lens" at all. There are top-end glasses with a different quality and, of course, a different price. But this (as in one program) is “a completely different story”.

        • Alexey

I don’t shoot films, so for me personally the changes are not significant, but for the photos we’ll say so significant, I have the previous generation and the new one, the new one is much better in terms of sharpness in the open, and the maximum sharpness throughout the field was like on f8 , it remained, here you are right, miracles should not be expected, this is not a top-end lens with sharpness throughout the field at 1 stop open or covered. Nevertheless, this lens can be used to solve a wide range of problems, while the pictures will be worthy of participation in the same annual Nikon photo contest, the winners of which are often shots made specifically for cheap whales. The main thing is not to listen to anyone and shoot for your own pleasure.

        • Alexey

By the way, this lens has a big plus, it detects autofocus problems of the carcass ... If there is a front or back focus, then it is almost certainly the problem of the carcass and it needs to be adjusted.

          • Alex 2

Interesting news…. If it is not difficult, share with your colleagues the “recipe” how practically using this lens you can “reveal the autofocus problems of the carcass”. If possible, point by point. I think many AF-P owners will be interested in doing a similar test of their body.

            • Alexey

Yes, there’s no recipe here, they have the same situation as screwdrivers, that is, the lenses themselves do not need to be adjusted, except for cases of lens displacement in the package, which is essentially a consequence of mechanical influences. We set the diagnostics as simple as 55mm and check on a ruler, but not with MDF, starting somewhere from 80 cm. If with increasing distance a progressive front or back focus is observed and the lens is guaranteed not to be subjected to mechanical stress, then the problem is almost certainly in the carcass. On the D3x00 and D5x00, carcass autofocus problems are a frequent occurrence; they were adjusted according to the principle of filling in the averaged calibrated data throughout the batch and calmed down.

  • Peter Sh.

In vain, citizens are so upset because of possible problems with the compatibility of Nikon's technology and optics, and see this as a vile ambush for an unhappy consumer.
Nikon's main source of income is not cameras at all. There, a single lens costs millions of dollars. Cameras are like a bonus to all of us. All new technologies are fending off in other areas, and it is impossible to recoup them by selling consumer goods.

  • Cindy

Thanks for cotgniburint. It's helped me understand the issues.

    • Denis

It seems to me that you don’t know English?

      • Artyom

How are you with Russian? Everything is fine?

        • Andrii

Don't you think that replying to a comment from 6 years ago is also not very normal?

  • Evgeny_d5000

You swear at a loss of compatibility, but meanwhile the Nikon EL2 carcass fully supports it? Or only with a minimum aperture?

    • Yarkiya

Of course, completely, and the video gorgeous shoots at 60fps fullHD.

  • varezhkin

just noticed from the photo that the color of the paint of the “golden” letters on the nameplate had changed, and the letters seemed to be not embossed even ...

    • Alexey

No, it hasn’t changed. AF-S DX NIKKOR 18–55mm f / 3.5–5.6G VR II and AF-P DX NIKKOR 18–55mm f / 3.5–5.6G VR are in front of my eyes, everything is the same.

  • varezhkin

The compatibility lists may not be correct. That's what those answered me today. Support: “Compatible cameras are D3200 and above, D5200 and above, and D7200 and above. For what reason these lenses are not compatible with older cameras, we cannot answer. ” - that's such a funny answer.

  • Val

"Nikon's hobbyist camera system is weird and illogical." I agree completely.

  • Andrei

After six months and 3000 photos, the lock in the Lock position broke. And, although the trunk does not spontaneously exit at the same time, the lens can now be opened without pressing a button.

    • Denis

in my opinion it only got better

    • pchel

Great hardware hack! Does the carcass see that the lens is parked?

    • Sanya

3500 less than six months. works as if purchased)

  • D5500

    Super sharp

  • Anon

I noticed one thing, if you turn the focusing ring further “18” towards blocking somewhere 2-5 mm, then the carcass will not see this, and the angle will become wider, I think it is equivalent to 16mm
A trifle, but it may come in handy

  • Nikita

I read komenty and honestly faded away, why did everyone get to the point of not working on old cameras? the point is that FOR THE MONEY you can buy af-s lens and everything will work.
if you take a kit camera kit with af-p then that’s good.

if you have been photographing for a long time, it is assumed that you have already bought a camera kit version with af-s
if you have been photographing for a long time, most likely you already have several different and necessary lenses, but even if you need EXACTLY 18-55, you can always take it at a flea market or just buy af-s for the same money. WHAT IS THE PROBLEM I just cannot understand ...

at prices af-p and af-s are somewhere around 6-7 thousand with a stub. Do you need it separately for the money? Of course, I would take it from parfocalism and quickly focus. but I have d5300

but old models do not have the quality and capabilities of UG video, and parfocality if nikon 1 j1 is more convenient to remove .. in short, IMHO, you don’t have any

    • Oleg

But what about the bayonet mount that we have been pulling for 90 years

      • Alexey

Eh ... sorry, but why didn't the bayonet please you? Or change it every 5 years in order to keep up with fashion?

        • Oleg

“Nikon is famous for not changing the mount of its DSLR cameras since 1961. All lenses released since 1961 (sometimes even earlier) are mechanically compatible with all Nikon cameras, including modern Nikon DSLRs. ” But this compatibility has its limitations: one of them is described here, where a modern lens cannot be installed on the same modern cameras: D3300, D5500, D5300, D5200, D7200, 7100. It is clear that all this is not fatal. But it's all the same that, for example, buying a new 200d kenon with a whale from 18-55 \ f4-5.6 I will not be able to install it on the 1100d kenon. All this can be experienced, no one argues, but on the other hand, why not plug the mount of the outdated 1100d with a more compact and modern whale, and put something more serious at 200d, why should the manufacturer limit me in this? Sorry for the long post

          • Arkady Shapoval

Installing af-p on these cameras is not difficult, since it also uses a Nikon F mount. Here we are talking about the fact that there will be no autofocus with the indicated models.
If you touched Canon, then it is worth mentioning that any canon 18-55 will not work on older models d60, d30, 10d as it simply cannot be installed there due to the incompatibility of the efs-> ef mount. The same applies to full-format cameras (Canon, unlike Nikon, cannot place original cropped lenses on full-format cameras), as well as optical problems for aps-h cameras (they do not have an optics fleet including crop).

            • Denis

autofocus will not be half the trouble. will the diaphragm work?

              • Arkady Shapoval

The aperture will be the same 'G' lens, not 'E'.

      • Nikita

And here is the bayonet mount? AF-s and af-p are equal in price, what's the problem?
Take af-s version if you have an old camera.

  • NE

The last Nikkor lens was purchased in 2013. Then there was no desire to buy Nikkors: I took Sigma ARTs, Tamron, and not at all because of the lower cost, since , for example, the Sigma 50 1.4 ART is many times more expensive than my native fifty dollars (which, by the way, I already had at that moment). Here the risks were and are higher. Therefore, my personal concern is that this economy continues to work on new Nikon cameras. And maybe I shouldn't be worried, given the current clear trend in Juche with all that it implies. And AF-P is not a topic for tantrums by and large ..

  • Nikita

    By the way!
    Pomino DK Nikkor (18-55 + 70-300 4.5-6.3)

    still out
    full frame 70-300 af-p 4.5-5.6
and also on crop - super shirik (and super dark too) 10-20 AF-P DK NIKKOR

    • anonym

I wonder if Nikon will release the AF-P lens, but with a constant aperture? .. Logically, it should. True, the price will surely be sky-high. I would like to make a remake of the legendary 17-55 / 2,8 (but in AF-P format). It would be nice for videographers

      • Michael

Logically, it’s unlikely. Manufacturers are now replacing conventional micromotors with cheap lenses with stepper motors, and ring ultrasonic ones, as they were, remain on top lenses (I look at Canon).

  • NoName

“There is nothing more difficult than writing about the image quality produced by kit lenses, especially when you know about the capabilities of today's 'real' lenses.”
I’ve been shooting with this lens for almost a year. I don’t know what is wrong with the quality of the image it creates. Yes, no bokeh, but XA and distortion are automatically corrected. Sharp, the image quality does not change in the back. Will there be a difference when shooting landscapes with more expensive wide angle lenses?

    • Denis

try 16-85. no bokeh, but the picture is really sharp

    • Denis

I bought myself this glass. chromatite more than the first VR. 55 probably cut, that's all. I will shoot a video with him. he has no other advantages, no matter how much they praise him :) in general, probably 5 different 18-55 pieces fell into my hands.
16-85 is noticeably better, and obviously 18-105 too (although the latter I only tested in the store when buying d5100, and then I chose 18-55 due to the fact that I could not find the hood from 18-105)

  • Innp

    Thank you for your feedback.

  • the material moisture meter shows you the

Such a respected surveyor, but did not realize what this lens was created for. the fact is that now there is a race with cameras for bloggers where the most important thing is video capabilities and autofocus. Nikon has a failure in AF area in love view. Autofocus does not rake out at all. And he's jerky, which is natural for contrasting focus. Kenon made a dual pixel, and af there is beautiful, Nikon needs to somehow catch up and solve the problem of jerky af in lv. So they created a whale with step focus. Now the video blogger can buy Nikon, and shoot himself for the blog, looking at himself through the rotating screen, and the focus will follow his face SOFTLY. And so we have what we have, as shown in this video https://youtu.be/Gz5Aje6BCGI focus test at 10:34

    • Arkady Shapoval

Thanks. I hope now the views will flow like a river :)

    • Peter Sh.

Well, the day has become more fun))

    • Denis

and where in this video is 18-55 AF-P?
      I see a fix at 10:34, most likely 35mm

      • Denis

although it seems I understand. the namesake did not try AF-P :) but I tried. it's VERY!

by the way, why focus on a “blogger”? if he takes pictures of himself at the table, there should be good lighting, and if you close the diaphragm and fix the focus, the viewer will only thank you for the fact that the focus does not go behind the face
or maybe you have a second option - a blogger who makes video selfie with a DSLR on the street. I would like to see it)))

Tell me, should the lens be fixed at the “L” position? My lens opens with a slight effort without pressing a button, but to close it you need to press a button. Does everyone have a defective lens?

    • Denis

press the button in both cases
someone wrote about the fact that the button stopped performing its function altogether ... in my opinion these are trifles

  • Nikita

    I tested this lens

    AF is just lightning!
    even live view!

old afs and did not stand nearby

Also add that the lens is super sharp

On d7100 (and if you believe Nikon 3100,5100, etc.) it starts with any firmware without problems, but the stub can not be turned off with ANY firmware. Correct pliz article. It works constantly and blurs all the advantages of glass at long exposures from a tripod. If you want a landscape with stirring water or heavenly stars - take the old 18-55. Alas. :(

    • Stas

I did not really understand the phrase about the fact that "the stub does not turn off at all." Maybe it is you specifically a malfunction of the carcass or lens? The stub can be easily turned on / off via the menu. It may not be as quick as with the toggle switch on the lens itself, but nevertheless it turns off if necessary.

  • Denis

maybe it’s sharp (I had and still have one new one and I took another used one, compare), but what's the point ...
after 18-55VR and 16-85 I was only impressed by the stub and focus speed
and he does something with flowers in poor lighting ... he used it with d7100, it turns out some kind of acid ...
still hard, and 70-300 AF-P VR generally disappointed with this parameter. sold it. 55-300VR was better
according to the parameter quality / cost 18-105 is still the best

Good day! Arkady, judging by the history of reviews, you have tested all versions of Nikon kit lenses, not counting the last one without the "VR" prefix, which is similar to the version with a stabilizer. There is an opinion that the first two versions, due to the presence of low-dispersion "ED" glass in their optical schemes, give a "cleaner" picture, minimizing chromatic aberration. In the third version Nikon excluded the "ED" -element from the optical scheme of the lens, but pleased with the built-in image stabilizer. In the fourth version, the optical scheme was changed and the stabilization system was updated, otherwise without surprises. And now the fifth and sixth versions of the lens are still without "ED" -elements, while the optical scheme now has two aspherical "AS" elements (one in all previous versions). Based on your experience with each version of Nikon kit lenses, and experience in general, which version would you recommend as the cheapest wide-angle lens? Interested in focal length up to 35mm. Did the rejection of the "ED" element in the optical design of newer lenses have a significant impact on the resulting image? How advantageous is the use of two "AS" elements in the fifth and sixth versions compared to older lenses? Which version suffers from distortion less? I have a Nikon D7100, so the focusing stepper motor of the new lenses should work fine.

It is not worth saving on a whale lens and you need to buy the latest models. The presence or absence of special elements is also not very critical.

Good afternoon! I have 7100. I took (for a test, for a while) this glass. AF and stub are working. But if it is fashionable to turn off AF on the carcass, then stub - no way! It's not on the menu! (new firmware)

    • Arkady Shapoval

I described this in my review “some older cameras will have automatic or manual focusing, but will not be able to control the gimbal.”

      • Denis

On the 70-300 AF-P DX VR when shooting the moon with the D7100 (the firmware is new), my stub turned off myself (it was visible in the viewfinder), apparently I thought that this was not a hand, but a tripod :)
I don’t remember the details now, in what mode I shot, etc.
