Nikon DX VR AF-P Nikkor 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6G and camera Nikon D3400

In short

Nikon AF-P 18-55 / 3.5-5.6G VR - the fifth generation of standard lenses for cameras Nikon DX... The first lens in the Nikon AF-P series. In general - good full-time lens. There must be a clear understanding that the whale lenses (supplied lenses) are the simplest in the entire line of zoom lenses Nikon DXand therefore you should not expect high performance from them. These are lenses for a wide range of tasks, they are great for amateur everyday shooting. However, the Nikon AF-P 18-55 / 3.5-5.6G VR surprised with its sharpness on a 24 MP camera with an APS-C sensor.

Nikon AF-P 18-55 / 3.5-5.6G VR usually comes with some entry-level SLR camera. In such a kit, its cost is low.

And now about the sad:

  • Nikon AF-P 18-55 / 3.5-5.6G VR will not work correctly on any Nikon camera released before Nikon D5200 (in fact, until 2013). The lens will not focus either automatically or manually. There is no complete compatibility data with some older cameras.
  • On some older cameras, automatic or manual focusing will work, but it will not be possible to control the stabilizer.
  • To control the stabilizer on some older cameras, you will need to perform a firmware update.

History

Nikon AF-P 18-55 / 3.5-5.6G VR and his twin brother Nikon AF-P 18-55 / 3.5-5.6G (without VR) were presented on January 4, 2016, but they found practical application only after they began to complete the camera with these lenses Nikon D3400, which went on sale only in the fall of 2016.

A line of standard (i.e. 'whale') class 18-55 / 3.5-5.6 lenses for cameras Nikon DX:

  1. Nikon 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6G ED AF-S DX Nikkor SWM Aspherical - first version. It was produced from 2005 to 2006. It exists in two colors - black and gray / silver. Announced with the camera Nikon D50.
  2. Nikon 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6GII ED AF-S DX Nikkor SWM Aspherical - second version. It was produced from 2006 to 2007. There are no serious differences from the first version, the lenses use the same optical circuit. It exists in two colors - black and gray / silver. Announced with the camera Nikon D40.
  3. Nikon 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6G VR AF-S DX Nikkor SWM Aspherical - third version. It was produced from 2007 to the present day. Has a built-in image stabilizer (Nikon VR, Vibration Reduction). Unlike the first two, it does not have 'ED'-elements in its optical scheme. Announced with the camera Nikon D60.
  4. Nikon 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6GII VR II AF-S DX Nikkor - the fourth version. It has been produced since 2013. Unlike the third version, it has a new optical circuit and can be folded compactly for transportation. Updated stabilization system. For the first time he could be seen with a camera Nikon D3300.
  5. Nikon DX AF-P Nikkor 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6G - fifth version. Available since January 2016. It has a new optical circuit and a new stepper focus motor. Went on sale with the camera Nikon D3400.
  6. Nikon DX VR AF-P Nikkor 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6G - the sixth version. The same as the fifth version, but with a built-in image stabilizer. It was presented simultaneously with the fifth version. Went on sale with the camera Nikon D3400.
  7. Nikon Nikkor Z DX 16-50 1: 3.5-6.3 VR - seventh version, for mirrorless cameras such as Nikon z50... Available from Fall 2019. New optical design, foldable body, reduced aperture and built-in image stabilization.

Sigma at one time produced an interesting alternative to similar whale lenses in the face of a faster Sigma Zoom 18-50mm 1: 2.8-4.5 DC OS HSM.

Nikon DX VR AF-P Nikkor 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6G and camera Nikon D3400

Unlike the previous version of GII VRII

Key differences from the previous model Nikon AF-S 18-55 / 3.5-5.6GII VR II:

  • the diameter of the filter increased from 52 to 55 mm
  • increased weight by 10 grams
  • focus motor has changed
  • focus speed is much higher
  • focus ring has become electronic
  • there was a function of holding focus while changing the focal length (parfocality), very important when shooting a video
  • there was a function of constant manual focus control M / A
  • lost focus mode switches and stabilizer
  • The optical design has changed. Another aspherical element added to the optical circuit
  • the new model is not compatible with cameras released before 2013

In general terms, the new lens is better than its predecessor.

Nikon AF-P 18-55 / 3.5-5.6G VR and Nikon AF-P 18-55 / 3.5-5.6G Are the first kit lenses from Nikon in the 18-55 class, in the optical design of which 2 aspherical elements are used.

Nikon DX VR AF-P Nikkor 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6G lens

Nikon DX VR AF-P Nikkor 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6G lens

Assembly

Nikon AF-P 18-55 / 3.5-5.6G VR assembled in Thailand. The lens uses a plastic bayonet mount, such a bayonet mount is the first sign that the user has a lens from the simplest Nikon Nikkor line of lenses.

Focusing ring plastic, without rubber inserts. zoom ring covered with rubber.

During a change in focal length, the front of the body frame (trunk) moves in a wave-like fashion. The retractable body frame part consists of only one section.

When changing the focal length, the rear lens moves in the middle of the lens body like a pump - it draws in and pushes out air. This behavior of the rear lens is called 'vacuum cleaner effect', which can increase the amount of dust that accumulates in the camera. See the effect of a vacuum cleaner with a lens Nikon 18-105mm f / 3.5-5.6G can here. Nikon AF-P 18-55 / 3.5-5.6G VR has such an effect much lower. From the side of the rear lens (when it is deepened), the lenses and other lens fillings are visible at the lens.

On the back of the lens is a small rectangular hood that cuts off excess light and prevents flare.

Nikon DX VR AF-P Nikkor 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6G lens

Nikon DX VR AF-P Nikkor 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6G lens

L button

To start using the lens, you must first unlock it. To do this, you have to press a special button that holds the lens in the 'L' position ('Locked' - 'Locked'), located on the zoom ring and rotate it toward the 18 mm mark, after which a slight click will be heard. To fold the lens, just press the button in exactly the same way and turn the zoom (zoom) ring in the opposite direction. When folded, the lens is noticeably shorter than in the working, with a protruding trunk.

On camera Nikon D90 and, most likely, on many other old cameras, when folded, the camera “does not see” the lens, but in the value field aperture the error 'F - -' blinks. Also, when folded in the viewfinder, everything is blurry.

On camera Nikon D3400, and most likely, on many other modern cameras, when the lens is folded, the camera displays the message "Before you start taking pictures, rotate the zoom ring to lengthen the lens."

UPDATE, critical error

With heavy use, the lens will wear out and the position lock will stop working. This is fraught with the fact that after rotating the zoom ring from 55 to 18 mm, it does not stop (abuts) at the value of 18 mm, but continues to rotate to the folded position. This is very annoying and very disruptive to shooting. The photographer thinks that he has set the widest possible angle of view, but in fact crossed the 'L' line and received a message that the lens is not extended and shooting is prohibited. I think this is a very serious problem with this lens.. I observed this situation with lenses with a range of over 60.000 frames.

Nikon DX VR AF-P Nikkor 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6G lens

Stabilizer

Nikon AF-P 18-55 / 3.5-5.6G VR uses a stabilizer with the same efficiency as in the previous model Nikon AF-S 18-55 / 3.5-5.6GII VR II. The stabilizer allows you to get 4 steps of compensation excerpts. In numerical terms, this means that you can shoot at shutter speeds 16 times longer than what a lens without a stabilizer requires. For example, when shooting stationary subjects at 55 mm of focal length, instead of being limited to 1/60 sec., You can shoot at 1/4 sec.

The stabilizer works well. The stabilizer can track the movement of the camera while shooting panoramas.

Important: for cameras that were presented before the release of Nikon D3400, and which are compatible with this lens, you should update the firmware to be able to control the stabilizer from the menu. These cameras include models D3300, D5500, D5300, D5200, D7200, D7100 (possibly others, there is no exact data). This is due to the fact that the lens does not have a stabilizer switch. The stabilizer needs to be turned on or off only using the camera menu.

Focusing

Nikon AF-P 18-55 / 3.5-5.6G VR and Nikon AF-P 18-55 / 3.5-5.6G Are the first lenses to use Nikon's new 'P' focus motor. Lenses are now labeled with a new abbreviation AF-P: 'Auto Fear Pulse motor '-' pulsating focusing motor '. The new 'Pulse Motor' is actually a Stepping Motor.

Canon has long implemented such motors in its whale lenses. First model Canon Zoom Lens EF-S 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6 IS STM (STepper Motor) was introduced at the beginning of 2013.

The focus motor is very quiet. Auto Focus Speed - Fast (closer to very high).

When used on a camera Nikon D3400 with unpretentious Multi-CAM 1000 focusing system the lens behaves well, rarely focuses incorrectly. I had no problems with focus accuracy and focus.

On camera Nikon D3400 I checked the presence of back and front focus at different focusing distances and different focal length values (infinity and MDF as well). As a measure, the images were taken using the Live View mode (which actually does not suffer from back / front focus). Focusing accuracy using a center cross-type phase focusing sensor was exactly the same as in Live View.

The lens does not have a focus mode switch. To put the lens in manual or automatic focus mode, use the camera menu. In auto focus mode can be supported focus mode 'M / A'... To do this, activate the 'Manual focus ring' item in the camera menu. at AF '. In 'M / A' mode, autofocus works with constant manual focus priority. 'M / A' mode very convenient and useful - for manual focusing or focus correction, you do not need to additionally put the lens in the 'M' mode using the camera menu.

During focusing, the front and rear lenses remain stationary, as the lens uses internal focus 'IF'-'Iinternal Focus' - 'Internal Focusing' (this abbreviation is used on the official website). Thus, it is possible to use any filters without problems, for example polarizing or gradient.

Nikon AF-P 18-55 / 3.5-5.6G VR uses electronic focus ring. The ring rotates freely without locking in the extreme positions. In manual focus mode, the ring actively rotates about 120 degrees. During auto focus, the focus ring remains stationary. The focus ring travel is very smooth and pleasant (almost like with old manual lenses). On cameras D810, Nikon D810a, Df,  D750D7200D7100, D5200 the focusing distance previously set by auto focus will be lost when the camera exits standby mode.

The closest focusing distance is only 24 cm. Nikon AF-P 18-55 / 3.5-5.6G VR focuses closer than other similar lenses, while the maximum zoom ratio (important for macro photography) is 1: 2.6.

Auto focus with AF-P lenses will only work with cameras (exact list):

D5200, D5300, D5500, D5600, D3300, D3400, D3500, D7100, D7200, D7500, D500 + D4, D4s, D5D6, Df, D800, D800E, D810, D810a, D850, D750, D780, D600, D610 + Nikon z6, Nikon z6 ii, Nikon z7, Nikon z7 ii, Nikon z5, Nikon z50 with adapter FTZ

Important: some of these cameras will need to use the latest firmware.

Auto and manual focus will not work with cameras (exact list):

D700, D3, D3s, D3x, D1, D1h, D1x, D2x, D2h, D2xs, D2hs, D100, D200, D300, D300s, D50, D70, D70s, D80, D90, D7000, D40, D40x, D60, D3000, D3100, D3200, D5000, D5100 + Fujifilm FinePix S1 Pro, S2 Pro, S3 Pro, S3 Pro UVIR, S5 Pro, IS Pro + Kodak DCS PRO 14n и Kodak DCS Pro SLR / n.

Features:

  • There is no depth of field scale, focusing distance and mark for working in the infrared spectrum. There is nothing at all, except for the focal length marks.
  • Focus shift (shift-focus) was not noticed during operation and testing.
  • During focusing on the MDF, the distance from the front lens to the subject is approximately 10 cm.
  • The lens has an effect 'Focus breathing'(changes in viewing angle during focusing).
  • While changing the focal length, the lens holds the focus distance (electronic analogue of the parfocal lens).

Nikon DX VR AF-P Nikkor 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6G lens. Minimum trunk length when unfolded.

Image quality

The quality depends very much on the settings of the camera or the original RAW Converter, allowing you to automatically correct some lens flaws (geometric distortion, vignetting, chromatic aberration).

There is nothing more difficult than writing about the image quality produced by kit lenses, especially when you know about the capabilities of modern 'real' lenses. However, I would like to point out that the lens is surprisingly sharp in the center of the frame even from open apertures. This is one of the sharpest whale lenses I've shot.

As befits a modern lens, the Nikon AF-P 18-55 / 3.5-5.6G VR behaves well in backlight.

In general, the image quality is at a decent level.

My experience

Nikon AF-P 18-55 / 3.5-5.6G VR did not start on my Nikon D90. Nikon had little to pervert Nikon D40 (lost compatibility with a huge amount of optics), now it has touched its whale lenses.

Nikon AF-P 18-55 / 3.5-5.6G VR itself is good, the Nikon system, with its amateur cameras, is strange and illogical.

On the official website there are simultaneously 5 relevant models of the class 18-55 / 3.5-5.6 (proof screen, link), users can choose for themselves any color and taste.

The electronic focus ring, the absence of switches and the parking system make modern lenses more and more similar to their mirrorless counterparts.

Nikon AF-P 18-55 / 3.5-5.6G VR is a good lens as the first and only one bought with a modern amateur camera. Who just wants to buy a DSLR camera with this lens - feel free to buy. Who knows a lot about photography - look for something else.

  • Denis

Do all Nikon 18-55 lenses have a vacuum cleaner effect?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Everything. When changing the focal length, the rear lens moves.

      • Vyacheslav

And where is the air usually drawn in? For between the bayonet mount and the lens the gap is not visible.

        • Oleg

The retractable trunk does not have a special seal, so it pulls

    • Vladimir

I have been using 18-55 for five years now. The multiplicity is small and the movement of the lens unit is not large. I can say that dust can be caught sooner when replacing optics than by zooming.

  • Sergei

Some of the photos presented above have a “digital snapper” character. Early kit Nikon lenses, in my opinion, were better in terms of the picture.

    • Michael

Most likely, a small pixel produces a number of numbers. Compare the old cameras to 6mp and 24mp.

    • Alexander

Let me object, I want to buy this device on a spare D5200 camera, and in my opinion this is the best option, since earlier models are designed for 10-12Mp maximum.

  • Onotole

Thanks so much for the review.

But I can see the logic in the Nikon amateur segment.
Does this lens fit on old (amateur!) Cameras? Well, okay, this is primarily a whale lens, that is, it comes with a new (this is important!) Camera. There is a complete order with compatibility.
If you have a D90, for example, it means you already have it with your own whale, which also works fine on it (meaning previous generations of the same 18-55).
If you decide to upgrade your old kit, then where is the logic to look towards this lens? You will not find something new with it on your old small-megapixel SLRs, you yourself write “if this is not your first lens, you better look for something more serious”. Fortunately, Nikon has been releasing (and continues to release!) Lenses for absolutely every taste and budget, and almost all of them are better than any whale, what is old or what is new.
And the point in all innovations causing no one in fact breaks off incompatibility - of course, Economy.
After all, on the other hand, buyers of new multi-megapixel DSLRs (for many this is the first camera in general) will get a generally good lens in optics, normally suitable for their pixel size and at the same time it will be light, compact, quiet, uncomplicated to use and, most importantly, very cheap.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Why not leave compatibility? Canon’s STMs work for themselves on older cameras.

      • Denis

some half measures. compatibility was removed, but the electromagnetic diaphragm was not made. sometime next time there will be a surprise to the owners of old amateur carcasses)

    • zengarden

I agree with you. This partial incompatibility is not annoying, because models hardly intersect; few people will buy a new whale lens on an old camera, but with a new one it is very good.
And for sure there are serious technical reasons for incompatibility, and not just "so wanted."

      • Eugene

“Serious technical reasons for incompatibility” - haha). This is just a typical junk marketing ploy.

        • Arkady Shapoval

          I agree.

          • Onotole

What could be a “bargain marketing ploy” here ??
Someone desperately needs this particular whale lens? And is a camera like the old one and you have to buy a new camera with the lens? So what should your logic look like?
What exactly Nikon makes you buy in this particular case with a “bargaining marketing ploy”?

            • Ivan

Soon all lenses will be updated to a new version, this af-sch, and when a person, say, with d90 in his arms will be forced, if he wants to buy a lens, or look for an old one on a flea market or update a carcass. Well, or, change the system, of course.

              • Onotole

Where did D90 come from? Really from a store and not from a flea market? She's over 10 years old for a second. So why can you buy a used carcass, but not lenses? Moreover, it is well known that the real life of a lens is much longer than a carcass, especially a good lens.
Moreover, did you know that despite the fact that the vast majority of Nikon optics have long been "updated" to G, many good lenses of the screwdriver era are still in production (!), Not to mention the sale. Buy - I don't want to. And even there are generally super-ancient manuals like 50 / 1.2, which you can come and buy in the store NEW!

So the question is - what have the owners of D90 cameras been deprived of again?

              • Ivan

Could from the store, could appear from a flea market in a person. I know people who buy only new, in principle. But here it is not the old lenses, but the new ones.
Deprived of the opportunity to use new lenses. I don’t know how to formulate this idea, so that it would be clear to you.
Nikon makes parts of its consumers uncomfortable based solely on marketing goals, not technical ones.

              • Onotole

Yes, this kit is not needed on the D90, NOT NEEDED.
Other in bulk, including and whales.

About marketing goals in more detail, please. I already asked me no one answered: is the desire to use this glass so great that it makes me buy a new camera? Why did the light converge on it somehow?

              • Ivan

I answer clearly and in the case:
I'm not talking about this particular whale. To hell with him. I am sure that new lenses (not only whale lenses, but necessary, good, interesting lenses) will also be af-r, like their STM boot. And this means that updates to old versions of lenses, completely new lenses will not fit on old cameras (old ones, probably, should be in quotes. 2013 was quite recent). What will force people who want a fresh lens and have an old camera to change the carcass, which is a profit for Nikon. Well, if a person does not dare to change the system, of course.
IMHO, to produce simultaneously incompatible carcasses and lenses - nonsense and a wild minus for the consumer. I am sure that technically there were no problems leaving compatibility. But the boot could, nikon, why is it worse?

              • Onotole

Okay, let's say the new ones will be af-p too. But firstly, it is not a fact that they will lose compatibility at the same time (one case with this whale is not yet indicative), and secondly, it will still be necessary to see what kind of lenses they will be (it is possible that they will be optically identical to af-s but just like renewed glass - and what is the point then?), and thirdly, how long will it leak by the time Nikon is born with a normal line af-p? How many will have cameras of 2013, and will they be functional by that time?

On my D7000, this kit (and, hypothetically, all new af-p lenses) will not start either. Does this fact soar me a little bit? Not at all.

Optics is where all the slightest revolutions died down 50 years ago. Then and still there is a slow evolutionary process. That is why people can easily attach some dinosaur from the museum to the newest Sonya and get great photos. When a new analogue of a camera comes out, the old one is removed from production in speed, while lenses are still being produced for decades. Because modern digital cameras, regardless of format, become obsolete 5 times faster; what 10 years ago was mega-cool for the pros, now it is an amateur-advanced level for three kopecks (not for reliability). With optics, this does not work, a good lens and after 40 years a good lens, so there is absolutely no point in chasing the newest glass in the world. Actually this whole site is about it.

              • Ivan

Let's see if they will be incompatible, but I think that they will.
To put it mildly, you are not quite right. They make interesting new lenses: both canon and sigma and tamron, I don’t know anything about Nikon, but I’m sure that something also happens to them.

You know, I now have a camera made around 2005, which is efficient and pleasing, and a modern lens with a stepper motor is my favorite lens.

Well, you know, many will look at a stepper motor to shoot video, very many, as happened with canon, for example.

I think that we are looking at the problem from several sides: you are not annoyed because you are not going to use new af-lenses, and you think that most of you are in solidarity, but I am not annoyed, because I no longer use Nikon but I’m more terrified of this system. But if I used it, I would be greatly bothered by this unhealthy tendency to incompatibility.

They also removed the auto-manual focus switch! Tin.

        • Alexey

The reasons for the incompatibility are rather political. The AF-P series was designed for 24 mega pixel sensors, so that the lens on fresh cameras would give an image the same or slightly better than on older cameras of the previous AF-S versions. If they made compatibility with earlier ones, then immediately the increase in quality would have happened due to the fault of a thicker "pixel", then no one will buy more expensive glasses and everyone will chase old cameras + new whales, and this is just not what they need. This improvement, by the way, is well demonstrated by the AF-P 18-55 and AF-P 70-300 on the D610 or D750 with their fat "pixel" ...

          • Michael

Yes, I did just that. Old carcass + modern glasses of medium scab give pixel-by-pixel sharpness with almost open

      • Alexey

She already annoys those who want to buy AF-P 70-300, it is cheap, but not compatible with the old ones.

    • anonym

I completely agree with Onotole, because in his glories there is common sense and logic, and comments like: I still have a film carcass, but I only use "whales", which is not at all sane, even from the words of Arkady it is clear that to acquire a new one whale does not make any sense, and most of the limitations are generally not related to the focusing motor, but to the lack of controls on the lens, which seems to me to be absolutely unacceptable for top-end glasses, how do you imagine it at all? So that the owners of professional glasses can not worry, everything will work, the danger lies in wait only for the owners of nikon d800 (and similar ones) who decide to install such a whale for themselves))) but in fact, you gentlemen disputants have missed the main thing, and the main thing is that on the new carcasses there was compatibility with old glasses (with which, as I understood from the review, there are no problems) and not on the contrary. That's all

  • Onotole

Otherwise, mirrorless pretty soon just gobble up this cheap mirror segment.

    • Ivan

And “pretty soon” is how much?

      • Onotole

        In our century

        • Ivan

A, 30-40 years old. Well, it’s understandable why I misunderstood you initially. My apologies, everything is possible during this time.

  • Vyacheslav

The parking button is terribly annoying, because of it you can lose a successful frame. And incomprehensible logic with removing the sliders of the focus mode and on off the stabilizer. Some penny savings.

    • Denis

I think there is logic. if the shutter speed is short, it is advisable to turn off the stabilizer. if there is no toggle switch, the carcass (if implemented) can decide whether to enable it or not

      • Dim

This is not a saving at all, since the beginning of centuries Nikon has been distributing cameras for different price groups: amateur cameras have fewer buttons and convenience, which is very important for pros to work efficiently. So the settings of this lens were hidden in the menu, everything suggests that they optically consider it good, and all the dancing with the switches is an attempt to return it to its place.

  • Ivan

Hello, sorry for the off-topic question, but can someone tell me:
-Which camera, lens, is it better to retake drawings?
At the moment I use Canon Powershot A620: A4, A3 - no problems, A2 - the edges are already soapy and darkish, A1 - the edges are blurry and dark.

    • Snapdragon

      Nikon D5200 + Micro Nikor 40 2.8

      • Oleg

And do not forget about lighting devices.

        • Eugene

aha) .. in short, the drawings - in the studio! ))

    • Alex

your drawings can be removed ABSOLUTELY with any (without) a reflex mirror, or even a GOOD soap dish.
The main thing, as they have already said, is to illuminate them well, and a fast wide-angle lens.

      • Sergei

Yes, it is aperture! 1.4. And close to a minimum of 5.6, and preferably up to 8. Very logical

    • Sergei

I support any modern crop and wide makrika. If Nikon, then d5200 and 40 macro are a great option. And do not forget the light, the corners can be therefore dark. If you just puff with the built-in flash

    • Bright

Ivan, take a regular smartphone, put the camscanner prog and enjoy the result. And do not use a microscope to nail nails.

  • Pickwick

Df and D5 are listed in the list of fully compatible cameras and in the list of incompatible.

a couple of thoughts on the reasons for the appearance of the next creation of the company Nikon.
repeatedly had to open Nikon whales of different generations.
the very first https://radojuva.com/2013/12/nikon-dx-af-s-nikkor-18-55mm-g/ made mechanically very durable and its design with a minimum number of small parts.
    second and third versions https://radojuva.com/2012/12/nikon-18-55-3-5-5-6-g-af-s-vr/
has slackened guide bushings. from that they have two diseases: with more or less vigorous exploitation, very often the bushings are destroyed. from which the zoom lens wedges or the front lens hangs.
I opened the fourth cable (with the LOK button) and immediately put it back together: everything inside is backlash, and when transferred to the transport position, one of the trains bends sharply. I do not think that the bending stability margin of the metal cable tracks is very large ...
I believe that the described variant is most likely an attempt to make the fourth version more reliable. a more “spacious” body while maintaining the diameter of the lens unit logically means more durable parts of the same zoom and focuser.
But making a high-quality, reliable and cheap lens now is a marketing zapad (I apologize for the emotional accuracy of the definition). so they castrated him.

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Fixed
      Thank you.

    • varezhkin

      Thanks, very interesting.

  • Ivan

That is, Nikon makes another line of lenses broken on old carcasses? Again?
Or am I stupid and read something wrong?

    • Ivan

But, not, they were new carcasses, broken with old lenses.
Nikon, stop it, I'm too dumb for you!

  • Snapdragon

Nikon AF-P 18-55 / 3.5-5.6G VR will not work correctly on any Nikon camera released before the Nikon D5200 (in fact, until 2013). The lens will not focus either automatically or manually.

It's five. I have d40. Previously, Toko old did not fit. And now new ones will not come. It's five!

    • anonym

On Nikon d3200 and d5100 will not be either. Owners of d800 and d4 are also grieving :)

      • anonym

+100500;) though today is not Friday!

      • Arkady Shapoval

        Poor owners of Nikon D4s, D800E :)

  • Dim

Everything is as simple as 2 * 2, if this lens allows even new multi-megapixel sensors, then it may well show on the same D90 and even more so D40 - a good result, and this, for obvious reasons, will not suit the seller, since they will soon have a bag on the secondary for 5 kopecks.

    • Denis

on the D40 and the old whale is enough

      • Dim

I remember changing it to a budget 40 \ 2.8 and could not believe my eyes - how the picture had changed, and before that I did not see much difference when compared with the Kodak soap dish, with the exception that the latter was much cheaper and more compact.

        • Denis

I have both D40 and 40mm F / 2.8G and D5100. There are no complaints about the picture 18-55 on the D40. there is still a Canon A640, but with it I do not see the difference in favor of the latter, although the matrix is large 1 / 1.7, and I bought it in 2007 for 12 ty

        • brighty

Eka compared with aperture Makrikom, even with 70-200 2,8 compared or 85koy. But, I think you were not friends with the light.

          • Dim

Their prices are very close and focal too, it is clear that the fix should be better, but not to the same extent

            • Denis

3 times difference in cost (22900 vs 6500-7900)

              • Dim

I took 40 / 2.8 in Thailand for about $ 250, I don't remember exactly, it was a long time ago - maybe less, maybe more.

              • Dim

Not that it is a lot of money, if you keep in mind the cost of the camera. The old 18-55 really limited it too much (D40), for a start it will come down of course.

              • Dim

Why not compare with 80-200 / 2.8, if there is both? One is huge, heavy and with good grip control for fx, the second is small and light for smaller cameras, but its possibilities are limited. When going on a long trip, the question may well arise, what to take with you - is there a place or not, it is stressful to drag or not, will it attract attention or not, and what kind of pictures will you bring?

  • Yarkiya

18-55 with a button, I use it from the moment it is released, I take it off often. Still nothing backlash, creaks and does not break. Technically and optically, the image is almost perfect, artistic, so how to shoot. The parking button is completely annoying, taken for granted and all.

    • Oleksandr

... although I have been using it not so long ago, I completely agree with Yarki (m). On a crop with a moderate pixel count, the 18-55 VR II's optical performance will do well to many of the more established and expensive rivals, especially at wide angle. A high-quality picture at a wide angle is worth a lot (all the more because of its cheap cost ... there is nothing to talk about - everything is just great!) As for the "highly artistic" moments, it depends on what to smoke))) As a rule, the degree of masterpiece does not depend from the lens: after all, the button on the side is parking, not “do well”.

      • Michael

So it is! 18-55 VR II at 18 mm excellent sharpness, even in the corners. Previous versions were weaker at a wide angle.

  • andrey.ali

Hello, I will speak about this lens. I had his "papirudnik" af-s vr2 with a button. There is something to compare, I used it on Nikon d5300. So, the old VR2 is not suitable for vidos at all, that is, if you want to take pictures of a child, and you watch the video on a PC, you will be oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo been strained by these focusing sounds. The lens was sold and forgotten.
What I liked about the new af-p, improved micro-contrast! The new focusing motor is silent, smooth and also much faster than the old BP2 !!
There was still a moment I bought 18-105 for little money, the quality of the photo (at the same focal length) is not comparable better with 18-55 af-p. Another 18-105 was much heavier (195 gr. At 18-55 against 420 at 18-105). After comparison, I sold 18-105 and do not regret it. To small weight I can add not large dimensions. Comparing with the first versions 18-55 so it is generally tiny !!!
As a result, I already use it for half a year, and I can not find a replacement for it! Yes, you say that there is Tamron 17-55, and Sigma 17-55, but they are heavy and bulky. When choosing an optics park, I have so far decided on such a set: Nikkor 18-55 af-p (staffer, shirik), 35 1.8g (you can safely take a walk in the fresh air) and 85 1.8g (bokeh shmak, portraits) and bought flash sb-500 for the aforementioned 18-55 af-p.
So who wants a lens for vidos, I don’t know better for the Nikon system ... Tamron released something like HLD ... but I don’t know what kind of motor it is ... stepping motor or something cooler, quieter, more precisely ... time will tell.
By the way, he promised Sat 500 for the review ...

  • Alexey

    Hello, Arkady.
Are you planning to review the AF-P DX Nikkor 70-300 f / 4.5-6.3 VR? Nikon got an interesting lens, I think people will be interested in his review.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Yes, I plan. Maybe Nikon will push something else for review.

      • Jury

        take a review of the D810 or D5, and I will customize you 20 1,4 :)

    • varezhkin

      +1

  • Alexey

By the way, your specimen still has a small focus front, even the f8 aperture did not “eliminate” it in the picture with snow, sharp snowflakes are a little closer to the focus point.

  • Frog

Dear amateur photographers and professionals, tell me, please, is there a problem to take. For money, about the same thing:
    1.Nikon D5100 + NIKOR 18-105 + NIKOR 35G
    2.NIKON D7000 + NIKOR 18-105
I just can't choose. I am a beginner amateur, I have experience and understanding of photography and lenses. I love this business and really want to develop in this direction. But I photograph "for the soul."

Please advise that it is better to take

    • Onotole

      Of course, the first option.
None of the functions of the D7000 of those that are not in the D5100 will not give such an increase in quality as a fix of 35 / 1,8.

      • Frog

I will love to take a fix, the only question is time and money. So I think ... here, of course, I decide what is important now, but I wanted to hear the opinion of knowledgeable people. Opinions were divided ...
Thank you very much for the recommendation.

    • Arkady Shapoval

      I would take d7000 + with one 35 1.8

    • d.martyn

If there is a choice between D7000 and D5100, then the budget is running out, so take the D7000, after that you will enjoy a fleet of screwdriver optics from Nikon and third-party manufacturers. Plus, the D7000 is more advanced (autofocus adjustment, chip-on battery, moisture protection, stronger body, additional screen, two control wheels, two card slots, etc.).

    • Michael

D40 and there will be happiness!

    • Sergei

Depends on plans. If you just shoot a family and play, then the first option is more than enough. If you want to develop in the direction of photography, then with the 5100, the truncated functionality and control will quickly become annoying. And yes, no “screwdriver”. Although for “taking pictures of children at home and taking pictures on vacation” whale and 35 again more than. And the screwdriver is no longer needed

  • andrey.ali

The second option is unambiguous, be patient to dig up and buy 35 1.8ji, or 50 1.8ji. you will take a boo, pay attention to the camera's mileage, if the lenses are nikon, look at the body, if the gold is gone from the letters, then it is pretty worn, I am silent for the back-front .... read on how to choose a boo technique.

  • Frog

Thank you very much for your prompt feedback. I have already read the whole of Radozhva up and down. Respect to the author!

    • brighty

5100 and 7000 have the same matrix, theoretically outdated. The 7100 has probably fallen in price, and the 5300 is also excellent.

    • Arkady Shapoval

      * I am happy, so true.

      • Frog

Arkady, thanks for your comment. For me it is important))
I decided that I would take a d7000 with a staffer of 18-105 (other options are much more expensive) + and I will buy 35 1.8 at the first opportunity.

  • Frog

Thank you, but I don’t have a drain ... I expect to meet the maximum of $ 450. Then I plan a high-aperture lens closer to summer. I take the camera myself for a couple of years ...

  • varezhkin

Arkady, grand merci! I have long wanted to see your review for this lens. The AF behavior in the video is interesting, for several. websites I read about some absolutely rave reviews in this regard ...

    • varezhkin

“Auto and manual focus will not work with cameras (exact list)” - the D50 is missing.

      • Arkady Shapoval

        Fixed

    • Alexey

On the video, AF behaves much better than on the previous ones, but the focusing sound will still be, although not significant, solved by an external microphone.

  • andrey.ali

it is on the d5300 .... very compact!

  • Igor

A good cheap state employee with an excellent stub, not 4 but 2 steps you win for sure.

    • Alexey

At 55mm, 1/30 from the hands in years, 1/15 is quite real, the marriage is there, but good ones are also quite sharp, so 4 definitely are. 4 stops is 55 * 1.5 / 4 = 1/20 seconds, you can probably say that 3-3.5 is definitely there.

      • Onotole

        4 stops is NOT 55 * 1.5 / 4 = 1/20 sec, but 55 * 1.5 / 2 ^ 4 = 1/5 sec

  • Dinah

Hello! Tell me pzhl and what size filters are suitable for this model and will they fit at all? I understand you need filters with a diameter of 55mm?

    • Denis

      right 55mm

    • Sergei

As you read in the review of the respected Arkady, the thread for 55mm filters. To correctly answer your question, I would like to know from which size options you choose.

  • Alexey

    Good evening!
In this review, the author pointed out, and I quote: “for cameras that were introduced before the release of the Nikon D3400, and which are compatible with this lens, you should update the firmware to be able to control the stabilizer from the menu”.

I ask for clarification, where can I get this firmware?
I have a Nikon d7100 with software version 1.03, and I did not find access to stabilizer control at home, but off. There is no fresh firmware site ..

    • Arkady Shapoval

Write to support Nikon, who knows where to get it :)
