Canon Lens EF 50mm 1: 1.8 II review, 'Canon Lens Made in Japan' version

According provided by Canon Lens EF 50mm 1: 1.8 II, 'Canon Lens Made in Japan' version is huge thanks to the store www.fotika.com.uawhere you can find a huge number of different used photographic equipment, including similar lenses for canon.

Canon Lens EF 50mm 1: 1.8 II, 'Canon Lens Made in Japan' Version

Canon Lens EF 50mm 1: 1.8 II, 'Canon Lens Made in Japan' version. The lens is shown on a digital SLR camera Canon EOS Digital Rebel XSi.

The Canon Lens EF 50mm 1: 1.8 II is available in two sub-versions: 'Canon Lens Made in Japan'and'Canon Inc. ø52mm Made In Malaysia'.

Key differences between versions:

  1. Different names. The original Japanese version has' Canon Lens EF 50mm 1: 1.8 II Canon Lens Made in Japan 'on the focusing ring near the front lens, the Malaysian one has'Canon Lens EF 50mm 1: 1.8 II Canon INC. ø52mm'. The Japanese version has only an 8-digit serial number on the bayonet side, while the Malaysian version has a serial number and an inscription 'Canon INC. Made in malaysia'.
  2. The Japanese version is older than the Malaysian. Initially, the Canon Lens EF 50mm 1: 1.8 II lens was made only in Japan, and subsequently production moved to Malaysia. Relocation, most likely, is associated with cheaper production.
  3. The Japanese version has the lettering near the front lens and the 'Canon 50mm' lettering on the body in a slightly gold-colored paint. The Malaysian has a regular white. The flower near the MDF marks '0.45m / 1.5ft' in the Japanese version is yellow, in the Malaysian version it is white.
  4. The Japanese version is rarer, the vast majority of Canon Lens EF 50mm 1: 1.8 II lenses are made in Malaysia.
  5. Perhaps there are other design differences.

I did not find any functional difference between versions 'Canon Lens Made in Japan' and 'Canon Inc. ø52mm Made In Malaysia'. You can safely buy any of them, however, on sale, most likely, it will be possible to find only a newer Malaysian version.

  • Alexey

Good lens, judging by the photo. Thuja is just wonderful. On-camera JPEG is an expressionist dream. Thanks for your review.

  • Alexey

Something this copy is in the review, on an open soap soap. This piece of plastic is much sharper on open.

    • Alexey

It's just that the FLIP is small, the focus is not on the newspaper. But with a bump on a thuja everything is fine.

  • Ilyas

    Soapy in the open

  • Novel

Advise for shorthand for portraits on the Canon EOS 50D crop what to choose: is this lens or manul 1.4 and which one?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Always a tough question. Picture versus convenience. A good 1.4 costs a lot of money, for starters you can buy one with 1.8.

      • Alexander

        Picture against laziness and autofocus))))

        • Artem

How everyone loves to boast of their “incredible” ability to focus with their hands! I would have watched how you, for example, a children's matinee or a sports event with a manual from the Central Exhibition Hall filmed. Not just one shot, but a series.
In fact, it all depends on the shooting conditions. Allow to use hands - forward, no - autofocus.
P.S. All this has little to do with the saber lens. Its slow autofocus and inconvenient manual focusing is the reason why I quickly parted with it.

  • Denis B.

    Plastic Fantastic)))

  • Gaziza

Thanks Arkady, cool reviews! I eagerly reread all your reviews, especially the flash sections!
Could you tell us about the rare Canon EF 28mm f / 1.8 USM, please, if you get caught? He seems to be not 24, and not 35.

    • Arkady Shapoval

I didn’t work with him, it's hard to tell :)

  • ULADZIMIR

Do not scold the lens. Please note that not every camera has a good autofocus. My picture on 7D was fundamentally different from the picture on 1000D

    • Sasha

interesting to try on 40D, it is something in between between 1000D and 7D. Does anyone have shots of the forties and this lens?

      • Arthur

        I have )

      • Arthur

        and here's another

        • Sasha

Thanks for the photo. Sharpness is of course so-so. It may be better on the covered, but the bokeh will suffer.

          • Oleg

It’s more like an auto focus miss. Here's a couple of quick shots of a flash in your forehead though. Aperture 1.8. The picture is soft, but sharpness is quite present

            • Arthur

no, there I just focused on mdf, so the grip is small. although it is possible that the lens itself was caught. to tell the truth, they don't want to shoot too much - everything hangs out, backlash ... maybe in a full frame it will be better in terms of the picture, but even at 7d, with its vaunted autofocus, on a diaphragm closed to 2.5, from one event, there was not one sharp shot ...

          • Oleg

            ...

    • Arthur

do not consider it as criticism, but the “picture” on 7d is something just unimaginably disgusting. perhaps if you put an elka on it for a couple of thousand ye, then something will change, but with the same fifty dollars, for example, 40d will show itself better. I have both 7d and 40d)

      • Novel

What nonsense, even subjective? What makes the 40d better? Due to what characteristics? You are simply cunning or it is not clear why or with your hands something, just no offense….

        • Michael

          Due to the matrix

          • Novel

Well, do you think that all modern cameras that have matrices with a total number of pixels several times larger than 10 megapixels, but with a smaller physical size of each pixel, are worse than 40d?

  • Basil

The 5-blade diaphragm cuts excellent quality marks :) but personally I like the Minolt nuts much more.

  • Artem

It is interesting to compare "head-on" with 50 / 1,8 STM. Those. camera on a tripod and photos from one and the second at different apertures.
From 50 / 1,8 II there were some dubious impressions. It seems to be good for the money, but with a bunch of nuances. So I think to take an updated or not worth it.

    • Oleg

Yes, take an updated, metal mount will not hurt. And the price difference is not great

      • Artem

To be honest, I think that for an inexpensive plastic lens, the value of a metal lens mount is overrated. Well, if it falls, then with metal, with plastic lenses will be slippers. But in the case of plastic, this should not damage the mount on the camera. And from the crooked hands when removing / putting on, titanium will not save)))
The price agrees humanitarian. Here the picture from him and the focus speed are more interesting. The manual focus ring seems to have remained flawed.

        • Rodion

Humanitarian price? Does she do painting? Sings? Does he write poetry? Does history and law teach?

          • Artem

5 points for a joke! I apologize! AutoCorrect) Naturally, humane.

          • Michael

No less! You must listen to her and, most importantly, look at her! And you must like her!

            • Rodion

Well, then you have to do something.

      • Artem

Judging by synthetic comparisons, the new one is as much as 5 percent sharper. Mostly centered. On cover, the situation is slightly better. But that is all that. Tests by tests, and the photo is more objective, kmk.

  • Alexander

Quite suitable lens, take into account the cost, I came across a good copy, more or less accurate, I mainly use manual glasses, but when I am too lazy to twist I use it, but naturally the picture will be better for many manuals. If you install a focusing screen with a microcline and a raster on the camera, there will be much less problems with focusing on focus, and in some cases, in terms of speed, I aim at the raster faster than auto focus. I inserted the screen myself, took a good film SLR, took out its screen, cut off , milled the ends (it is not necessary to mill for all cameras), then inserted the most difficult and tedious thing - adjusted. There are ready-made, Chinese ones on sale, but the price and of course the quality cannot be compared with those inserted into the old film mothers and boxes.
By the way, auto focus is protected because the sensor is at the bottom under the mirror, the exposure may change slightly, usually not significantly, its sensors are around the pentaprism, after the screen.

  • Alexander

    continued on the screen.

  • Alexander

Below are two photos on the lens itself, the photos do not have any processing and correction, on the camera jpeg, what the camera gave out, that is, the aperture in both pictures is 1,8 camera canon thirty, the lens is naturally canon 50 1,8 II

  • Yaroslav

Mine merges Nikkor 50 1.4 non-ai in both sharpness and contrast.
In order not to throw contrasts in FSH, you still need to search :).

  • Leons

I will add what is the difference between these lenses, Japan and Malaysia. First is the weight, the Japanese is heavier. When you pick up Japanese, the quality of the plastic is noticeably better, the Malaysian plastic is not as rough as the Japanese, the density of the Japanese is several times higher than the Malaysian one, I would say that the Malaysian plastic is 50% polyethylene, the Japanese is carbon plastic. I was amazed at the density of the Japanese during its repair, if the Malaysian "Boeings" when falling can really suffer with multiple fractures, and this focusing ring is immediately blown up and so on, then the Japanese when falling can get off with a slight fright with a slight deformation, as the maximum front lens can pop out from the latches, everything. Again, during operation, the Malaysian will noticeably receive traces of this very operation, the Japanese will keep the cosmetics at a level. As for the mechanics, I can't say anything, I admit that the gears are also made of plastic by an order of magnitude stronger, during the test run of the Japanese, the rotation of the entire gearbox is much quieter and “oily” than that of the Malaysian.

  • Andrei

Tell. There are 50 1,8 STMs in stock.
I don’t like the sharpness at 1,8, which is quite weak. 4 is excellent, but the blur is weak.
I also want to buy a 24 pancake, because 50 is sometimes a bit too much on a crop.
So, does it make sense to carry both, or is it better to buy Sigma 17-50 2.8?
The price is the same as 2 Nikon, which is 1 Sigma.
In terms of image quality and sharpness, I will not lose?
