Tokina Fisheye 10-17 F3.5-4.5 DX AT-X (Model 107, N / AIS) I will abbreviate as Tokina 107 Fisheye. This review shows the Nikon DX version.

In short

The Tokina Fisheye 10-17 F3.5-4.5 DX AT-X (Model 107, N / AIS) is the world's first zoom fisheye (in fact, almost the first). Very specific. Not optically flawless, but fisheye is always fun. A very strong point of the lens is its short focusing distance.

History

The lens was introduced on December 1, 2005. SMC Pentax-DA FISH-EYE 1: 3.5-4.5 10-17mm ED [IF] (Pentax 10-17), which became the first fish for cameras with an APS-C sensor with zoom capability. Already in January 2006, a similar lens was released - Tokina 107 Fisheye 10-17 F3.5-4.5 DX AT-X. Most likely Tokina 10-17 and Pentax 10-17 are a joint development, as evidenced by the same optical design of the lenses. The Tokina 107 Fisheye lens is not available for Pentax cameras, there are only versions for Nikon and Canon.

It's good to know that Pentax has released lenses for Samsung SLR cameras. There are only four Samsung SLR cameras:

Copy of the original SMC Pentax-DA FISH-EYE 1: 3.5-4.5 10-17mm ED [IF] (Pentax 10-17) it could be considered 'Samsung Zoom Lens Fisheye D-XENON 10-17mm 1: 3.5-4.5 AL'and'Schneider-Kreuznach D-XENOGON 1: 3.5-4.5 10-17mm ED AL'(the names are indicated according to their writing on the lens bodies).

On June 12, 2011, in addition to the Tokina 107 Fisheye, a similar lens comes out - Tokina 107 Fisheye 10-17mm F3.5-4.5 DX NH AT-X... The new version does not have a built-in hood (the name is marked NH - No Hood) and can work on full-frame cameras as a 10 mm circular fishy. The lenses have no other significant differences.

At the beginning of 2015, a new line of lenses Tokina AT-XV for video shooting. A lens was introduced for this new lineup on May 28, 2015. Tokina 107 Fisheye 10-17 F3.5-4.5 DX AT-X V NHbased on the T lensokina 107 Fisheye 10-17mm F3.5-4.5 DX NH AT-X. Version Tokina 107AT-XV so far only exists for Canon EOS cropped cameras.

All lenses mentioned in this section have the same optical design and can be considered clones of each other.

Tokina 107 Fisheye 10-17mm F3.5-4.5 DX AT-X belongs to the first four lenses of the Tokina DX line (for cropped cameras): Tokina AT-X 16.5-135mm F3.5-5.6DX, Tokina AT-X PRO SD 165 16-50 F2.8 DX Internal Focus, Tokina AT-X 535 PRO DX AF 50-135mm f2.8 for Nikon and Tokina 107 Fisheye 10-17 F3.5-4.5 DX AT-X (from this review). All of these lenses were shown at the beginning of 2006.

By the way, the Nikon company, which released its Nikon DX AF Fisheye Nikkor 10.5mm 1: 2.8G ED in July 2003.

Assembly

The Tokina 107 Fisheye came to me with a completely new review, in a complete set, which includes the front and back covers, a box with instructions and coupons.

The lens is built very high quality. In the hands it feels like a solid strong thing. The zoom and focus rings are rubberized, the lens uses a metal mount and a metal front cover. The front lens cap on the inside is coated with a special sealing material that allows you to firmly fix it on the lens. The lid does not snap into place, but fits snugly to the front lens barrel. Over time, most likely, such a cap will not fit snugly against the lens and will fall off it. The lens body is pleasantly rough, such a coating is usually used with lenses of the AT-X PRO series, for example, Tokina 280AF AT-X PRO. When installing the cover, the black coating is erased from the metal hood.

Unfortunately, due to the slightly convex front lens and built-in petal hood, Tokina 107 Fisheye cannot use filters.

During focal length changes, the rear lens moves in the middle of the lens barrel like a pump, but the movement is small, there is no 'vacuum cleaner' effect.

There is a bayonet mount mark on the case. When changing the focal length, the front of the body frame (trunk) moves forward / backward within one centimeter.

The front lens has an additional water-repellent coating, which makes cleaning the lens easier after getting moisture, dirt, fingerprints and more. I did not begin to dirty the lens to check this property in action.

Tokina 107 Fisheye 10-17mm F3.5-4.5 DX AT-X Internal Focus

Focusing

Tokina 107 Fisheye focuses quickly, the focusing speed can even be called very high.

When used on a camera Nikon D90 (with unpretentious Multi-CAM 1000 focusing system), as well as on the camera Nikon D70 (with super-simple Multi-CAM 900 focusing system), the lens behaves well, very rarely makes a mistake in focusing. I had no problems with focus accuracy and focus. On camera Nikon D90 I checked the presence of the back and focus front at different focusing distances and different values of the focal length (infinity and MDF as well). Pictures taken using the Live View mode (which does not suffer from back / front focus) were used as a measure. Focusing accuracy using phase sensors completely coincided with the Live View mode.

It's important: auto focus with this lens is available only when using him on cameras with built-in motor focusing.

Exact list Nikon DSLR cameras with a built-in focus motor, on which this lens will focus automatically:

Exact list Nikon DSLR cameras without a built-in focus motor, on which this lens will not focus automatically:

Only auto focus and sound confirmation of focus will not work with these cameras, all other important functions, such as automatic exposure metering and automatic iris control, will work well.

You will find a lot of useful information on the types of cameras and lenses Nikon here.

The first Nikon camera, which did not have a built-in focus motor, was Nikon D40presented half a year later than the Tokina Fisheye 10-17 / 3.5-4.5 lens. Thus, Tokina cannot be blamed for initially releasing its lens without an integrated focus motor. True, it is unfortunate that this version has not been updated to an option with a built-in focus motor. Many other Tokina wide-angle lenses, which at first also did not have a built-in focus motor, were eventually replaced with motorized versions. For owners of cameras without a focus motor, I recommend not spending money on Tokina Fisheye 10-17 / 3.5-4.5, but buying a cheaper one Samyang 8mm 1: 3.5 UMC FISH-EYE CS II Aspherical NI - manual fisheye with a microprocessor.

Tokina 107 Fisheye lens uses internal focus, there is even an inscription on the lens - 'Internal Focus' ('Internal Focus'). Neither the front nor the rear lens moves during focusing.

The focus ring rotates approximately 80 degrees. The focus ring is rubberized. The ring travel is smooth, but not very pleasant. It was convenient for me to work with manual focusing on this lens.

When changing the focal length, the front lens does not rotate, it only moves in waves: from 10 to 12 the trunk of the lens is hidden, from 12 to 17 mm the trunk of the lens goes forward.

The minimum focusing distance is 14 см over the entire range of focal lengths (the distance from the camera’s matrix to the subject). The maximum magnification ratio is 1: 2.56 achieved at 17 mm focal length. it very good indicator for an ultra wide angle lens. The distance from the built-in lens hood to the subject from shooting when focusing on the MDF is only 2-3 cm... With such a small MDF, you can do incredible wonders with the game of perspective - Example 1, Example 2, Example 3.

Focus Features:

  1.  Tokina 107 Fisheye does not have a focus mode switch. To translate the lens into manual focus on cameras with motor For focusing, use the focus mode switching lever located near the camera mount. For cameras without motor Only manual focus mode will always be available for focusing.
  2. Focus speed may vary slightly from the camera used. This issue has been considered. here.
  3. During focusing, the lens and camera are quite noisy. The noise level can be found in my video review of this lens.
  4. There is the effect of 'Focus Breathing' (changes in viewing angle during focusing).
  5. During auto focus, the focus ring rotates and cannot be touched.
  6. Tokina 107 Fisheye is a third party lens. It may happen that it will not work correctly with some Nikon cameras. Details on this issue have been reviewed by me here.
  7. Tokina 107 Fisheye has no focus problems in Live View (tested on Nikon D90).
  8. When changing the focal length, focusing is a bit confused.
  9. Tokina 107 Fisheye transmits the focus distance to the subject in the camera and is a type lens Nikon D.
  10. The lens has a hard stop (hard infinity mechanical stop) which allows you to accurately and quickly focus the lens to infinity under any external temperature conditions, but only at 10 mm focal length. At 10 mm in most cases, it is enough to focus manually on infinity and forget about the focus ring.
  11. The lens has a window with a scale of focusing distances in meters and feet. There are labels for 0.14, 0.16, 0.2, 0.4 and an infinity label. Such a scale in itself is of little use and is present more for show (justification of this thought here).

Tokina 107 Fisheye 10-17mm F3.5-4.5 DX AT-X Internal Focus

Image quality

The Tokina 107 Fisheye is more for creative shooting than for shooting requiring high optical quality of the final image. The specificity of the lens is such that at 10 mm it is a classic fisheye lens with 180° diagonal view, at 17 mm it turns into an ordinary wide-angle lens with strong distortion. At 17 mm it behaves like a full-size fisheye mounted on a cropped camera.

At the edges and corners of the image there is a drop in sharpness and very strong chromatic aberration... Closing the aperture helps a little to combat these disadvantages. In the center of the frame, the lens is not sharp enough at wide apertures. Sharpness increases significantly at closed apertures in the center of the frame. Sharpness at the edges and corners of the image is very dependent on the focusing distance - the shorter the focusing distance, the more difficult it is to get a sharp picture on the periphery of the frame.

Tokina 107 Fisheye poorly tolerates side and back lightcreating a small amount of glare. In certain cases, the lens can greatly lose contrast from bright light sources.

It is nice that the lens has low vignetting over the entire range of focal lengths at any focusing distance and at any aperture value.

Due to the 6-blade aperture, it is very easy to receive 6-ray stars from bright light sources (example).

Tokina 107 Fisheye 10-17mm F3.5-4.5 DX AT-X Internal Focus

My experience

At 10 mm focal length with this lens you can take off motionless objects even for 1/5 of a second. When shooting with this lens, the biggest challenge for me was choosing the right one exposure. At 180 degrees of view, a large number of places with different illumination get into the frame, the camera’s exposure is crazy, which leads to a strong overexposure or underexposure of the scene.

The Tokina 107 Fisheye is the only wide-angle / ultra-wide angle lens currently available outside of the professional Tokina AT-X PRO series. I can say that optically it is the weakest of the entire line of such lenses from Tokina. At the same time, at the time of writing this review, it was the 'widest' width for crop cameras from Tokina.

Looking at the lens from a creative perspective, primarily for playing with perspective, the Tokina 107 Fisheye is a very good solution. If you use it for more technical purposes, for example, to create panoramas, including spherical ones, this is not the best solution.

I really liked the build quality and the capabilities of the lens. Tokina 107 Fisheye, like the original Nikon DX AF Fisheye Nikkor 10.5mm 1: 2.8G ED, can focus only 14 cm from the subject and allows you to very unusually transmit perspective with small objects in the frame. If I had a choice, I definitely settled on Nikon DX AF Fisheye Nikkor 10.5mm 1: 2.8G EDTokina is almost a stop darker than the original Nikkor. I tried the Tokina 107 Fisheye indoors while shooting a wedding (here и here) - due to excessive exposure and low aperture ratio, it turned out to be quite difficult to use in poor lighting conditions.

The Tokina 107 Fisheye is an interesting fisheye with a zoom function that allows it to be used as a wide-angle lens with strong distortion. Excellent build, fast focusing, 180 degree diagonal view. For this lens, flawlessness in optical performance is not very important; for it, creativity is much more important during shooting.

Ark, thanks for the review, I've always liked the lenses that change the perspective ...

  • Pastor

Cool lens. I tried it a bit, but for some reason I didn't buy it, I decided that since I don't use phishing tools, Zenitar will be enough. And now I regret it, because in fact this is one of the two fishey zooms, while the second is an elk with a high price. And then, having filmed more at the zenith, he became generally interested in the fish picture. Thanks for the interesting review.

    • Yuri Molchanov

It is incorrect to compare with Zenitar. At my full-frame Zenitar frames the corners of the frame, only its price of $ 90 saves from complete disappointment.

      • Pastor

Well, it catches very slightly for my taste. Again, such glass is unacceptable most often for work, but for the sake of pleasure it’s completely nothing. Especially at 5.6 zenithar is quite sharp.

  • Denis

Thanks for the review, it’s especially nice to see another video review. M guys subscribe to the YouTube channel Arcadia!

Thanks for the review! I had one, used on Canon 60D and 5D2. Excellent lens, sold and very sorry.

Yes, actually it’s a less or less decent picture all over the field from f / 8.0, its plus is that at 17mm it’s wide without a blockage. Shot at f / 11

This product is just awful. The worst thing that passed through my hands. It is unsuitable even for amateur graphomania “on the table”. Sold the next day after purchase. Samyang 8mm, even in the old version, tears it radically in quality (color, sharpness, detail).
I think that Tokina’s release of this under-reporting, with all due respect to its build quality, was just a glitch in the Matrix ..

    • Michael

Normal product, current diaphragm must be clamped. Not good, but not so bad either. You would give a canonical whale, I would look at your reaction)))

      • Oleg

And that whale pinched the diaphragm 5.6-11 at the wide end and you will be happy. I am satisfied with is2. And stm is generally a good series

        • Pastor

Here you need to try a whale without a stub :) I tried different whales, but the old unstoppable (not the third version) canon whale is just awful :) A lot of ha, soap, even on covered one and lousy assembly. is2 is actually very good, in general even open normal, in comparison with the old version.

      • Kirill Yankovsky

In this product, I somehow did not notice much of a difference between an open hole (a terrible hardening soap) and F10-11. Only at f18-22 did the flaccid signs of sharpening begin. Perhaps the unsuccessful got away with it.

        • Arkady Shapoval

At F / 22, the sharpness in the frame is leveled, but small details are completely eaten up by diffraction.

        • Michael

Maybe. Or there are a lot of MPix, that's why you see flaws. After f / 8, I have only claims to chromatics, and that is not much.

          • Kirill Yankovsky

I tested it on the D7100 .. But on samyang on f22 I didn’t notice the parts being eaten at all

            • Michael

Well, such a herd, this lens does not pull at all, it’s a bit old already.

          • Anton

Similar. There is plenty of detail at f8. At first I thought without a UV filter there would be solid holes on top, but to my surprise, it does not take the sky very well (maybe because of the bloom of vignetting at an ultra-wide angle ... Although, I have not noticed the darkening at the edges yet). Plus, this is the only one of my lenses on which I manage to shoot at 1/60 sec (and at f4.5 get a reasonable result ... Although, normal sharpness starts after f5,6). And, here is HA - yes, since the editors with one slider correct the situation in most cases. It's a great thing to understand how fishy suits you. I'm not sure, however, whether it is worth 10,5 thousand, but I took a used one. for 4,5 thousand and is very pleased that the city with him is revealed in a completely new way. And, for yourself, you can straighten the distortion to a non-fisheye ultra-wide angle (by 10-14mm) and get an alternative result, although then of course the soap comes out in the corners.

            • Michael

HA is not always easy to correct from him, but for such a price you can tolerate)

  • anonym

Really someone is ready to give 50 pieces for this mediocrity. A rare case, the photographs of the review did not touch well at all. (

    • Michael

50 for it and do not ask, half current. This is one of the cheapest autofocus fisheries.

Arkady, the very first and for a long time the only zoom fish-eye was the film zoom, oddly enough, also from the Pentax-SMC Pentax-F 17-28mm F3.5-4.5 Fish-Eye. In addition, Samsung Pentax lenses never did. This was done by Schneider-Kreuznach

At 17mm FF it turns into a diagonal fish-eye, and at 10mm it turns into a circular one. The 10mm lens hood on the FF will climb into the frame (I have both options).

This is on Nikon D610. Previous -10mm, this one - 17mm

      Another 10mm

On FF at 17mm, both work the same.

By the way, 58mm filters are perfectly screwed into the built-in hood of this lens. I don’t know if this is intended or is it a “side effect”. The slots just remain and the filter strongly closes the corners, the working FR is somewhere from 14-15 mm.
Maybe someone will come in handy such infa)

I was like that, I used it on crop and FF, changed it to 17-40L I really regret it! The glass is excellent!

No, this glass works at a price, I took it 3 years ago, but now something really is not right for a new one in magicians asking for TR 59. I took it from my hands, ideally for 13 tr

Hello! Is this lens suitable for interior photography of premises (for example, hotel rooms, rooms in an apartment)? Or is it better to use a wide-angle Sigma 10-20 on a crop for this type of shooting? Share your experience please

        • B. R. P.

Too much distortion for shooting interiors, in my opinion. Although, depending on what your requirements for the quality of images. What, in your opinion, is the fundamental difference between Sigma 10-20? Slightly already at the long end.

        • Arkady Shapoval

Only for 3D tours, usually use something in the cropped area of 10mm, stitch panoramas, without strong distortion

Katya, fisheye for interiors? Look at the survey photos here # 2, 22, 24, 28 - he bends the edges into a circle (like a view through a fisheye), you can't understand a curve or a straight element in nature. Sigma 10-20 is even a normal shirik.
