Assembly, control, focus

Lens body made very high quality... The diameter of the filter for the front lens, as for this type of lens, is generally tiny and is only 52 mm. The piston ring is rubberized, the diaphragm ring is not. On the side of the rear lens there is a rectangular hood that cuts off excess light and prevents flare. During focusing and changing focal lengths, the rear lens of the objective remains stationary. The lens length does not change while the focal length is changed.

One ring is responsible for focusing and changing the focal length. To change the focal length, pull or push the piston ring, to focus - rotate it. Nikon 80-200 / 4.5 uses'reversible PUSH-PULL'- the maximum focal length value is available when the piston ring is closest to the camera mount.

Nikon 80-200 / 4.5 focus ring rotates approximately 200 degrees... During focusing, the front lens rotates and extends forward. On the body there is a focusing distance scale, depth of field scale (in the form of colored stripes) and a mark for working in the infrared spectrum. The lens has a hard stop (hard infinity mechanical stop), which allows you to accurately and quickly focus the lens to infinity under any external temperature conditions.

Nikon 80-200 / 4.5 has a slightly pronounced 'Focus Breathing' effect (changing the viewing angle during focusing). During focusing towards the MDF, the viewing angle decreases. Due to the fact that the focus ring is wide enough and has a large and smooth stroke, the effect of 'Focus Breathing' is almost not noticeable during focusing.

The instructions indicate that there is no need to refocus when changing the focal length. In fact, it says about the lens parfocality: 'There is no need to refocus with each change in focal length'. In fact, when changing the focal length, the Nikon 80-200 / 4.5 misses focusing a little and is not parfocal.

Unfortunately, the lens changes the focal length under the weight of its own piston. Effect spontaneous piston movement on the copy from the review expressed very, very strong.

How to work with manual lenses is described in detail here и here. When working with Nikon 80-200 / 4.5, the green focus confirmation point works well and it is easy to focus on focus accuracy.

Image quality and sample photos

First of all, I want to note that the f / 4.5 aperture, in terms of sharpness, is working across the entire range of focal lengths. The lens itself is sharp, sometimes even very sharp. On covered diaphragms, the Nikon 80-200 / 4.5 may surprise you. For harshness, he can forgive a little distortion, vignetting and chromatic aberration.

The weak point is backlighting and freezing (example) Non-rounded aperture blades can create nuts (example) In general, the lens has a nice bokeh.

The gallery shows photos without processing. Download RAW c source photos Nikon D90 can at this link. All these days there was cloudy weather due to which the gallery of pictures turned out to be small. At 200 mm focal length, the lens loves excerpts no longer than 1/200 second. Due to the very shaken piston, I had no desire to shoot for a long time on this lens.

Nikon Zoom-NIKKOR 80-200mm 1: 4.5 is a nice old school lens. The strong point is good sharpness, the weak point is the spontaneous movement of the piston.
