According provided by Tokina AT-X 80-400mm 1: 4.5-5.6 lens (Tokina AT-X 840 AF-II, option 'N / AIS', for Nikon cameras) is huge thanks to the store www.fotika.com.uawhere you can find a huge number of different used photographic equipment, including similar lenses.
The lens has three main modifications:
- Tokina AT-X AF 80-400mm 1: 4.5-5.6 (AT-X 840 AF, MKI)
- Tokina AT-X 80-400mm 1: 4.5-5.6 (AT-X 840 AF-II, MKII)
- Tokina AT-X 80-400mm 1: 4.5-5.6D (AT-X 840 AF-II D, MKIII)
On Radozhiv there is already an overview of the first version of this lens, namely Tokina AT-X AF 80-400mm 1: 4.5-5.6. In this review, I will only consider the differences between AT-X840AF and AT-X 840 AF-II.
- Version AT-X840AF produced from 1996 to 2001. The AT-X 840 AF-II version was released from 2001 to 2006.
- Unlike the first version, the AT-X 840 AF-II was not available for Pentax cameras.
- AT-X 840 AF-II became 90 grams heavier (1050 grams versus 960 in the first version).
- The type of hood has changed. Instead of the Tokina BH-721 JAPAN, the new version began to use the Tokina BH-724 JAPAN hood.
- AT-X 840 AF-II received fixed tripod foot. The foot rotates 360 degrees around the lens body and is fixed using a special clamping screw. There are marks on the lens body for quick installation of strictly vertical or horizontal orientation.
- The AT-X 840 AF-II received a zoom lock at 80 mm. The latch (lock) prevents the spontaneous change of the focal length of the lens under its own weight.
- It is stated that in version AT-X 840 AF-II redesigned focus mechanism, which is why the focus should be smoother. In practice, I did not notice much difference in the quality of focus between versions. The AT-X 840 AF-II version focuses a little faster.
- AT-X 840 AF-II has different case design. Compared to the first version, the AT-X 840 AF-II has a much narrower zoom ring.
- The AT-X 840 AF-II version does not have an 'AF' prefix anywhere on the body to indicate autofocus support.
AT-X 840 AF-II Versions and AT-X840AF use the same optical scheme with the same enlightenment.

Material prepared Arkady Shapoval.
the model has become prettier, since the time of 70-200 MK6 :), but the lens, yes, not really.
Whichever gadget is tested, there are still things that cannot be conveyed in words - these are personal impressions. Here is not only the quality of the issued image (from my point of view, there is no need to modify it in a photo editor), but also the impressions that come to you as a result of comparison with other gadgets with similar characteristics.
Exquisitos analisis, buenos puntos de vista, excelentes fotos de muestra.
Gracias a la distancia por su excelente descripción y los detalles que mucho ayudan.
I have II version for Pentax.
Good afternoon. I consider the AT-X 840 AF-II as an inexpensive 400mm TV for the Sony A850.
However, Arkady, you wrote “The AT-X 840 AF-II from this review is optically much worse than the AT-X 840 AF, which I reviewed earlier”.
But the article also says that "Versions AT-X 840 AF-II and AT-X 840 AF use the same optical scheme with the same coating." Why, then, is the deterioration? Thanks.
