Corpse of the bride: Canon EOS-1D Mark II VS Nikon D2H

This is part of a small article about how the cartoon was filmed 'The Corpse of the Bride'. Prerequisite for selective translation original article became my search for information on the camera Nikon D2H.

Shooting process

The shooting process. Picture taken from here.

Shooting with a Canon Digital SLR Camera and Nikon Lenses

Surprisingly for performing cinematic film shooting 'Corpse Bride' camera was selected Canon EOS-1D Mark II - a commercial CPC originally designed for photography only. This choice was a huge innovation. This is the first film shot at the Central Exhibition Hall, instead of a conventional movie camera.

The production of the picture began only a month ago, and with it began the testing of various CZKs to shoot the future picture. There were many unresolved issues:

  • Are the pictures from digital cameras sequentially the same from frame to frame?
  • Is quality with numbers comparable to quality with film cameras?
  • Is image quality stable under various conditions of temperature and humidity?
  • Is it possible to develop a system for previewing animation on the set?
  • Is it possible to develop a system to track all frames?
  • Can a movie camera be developed to watch online video using a digital camera?

Given all these issues, Chris Watts tuned in to ensure that he got into each hands TsZK, which he can find. Canon UK lent models Canon EOS 10D, Canon EOS-1D Mark II и Canon EOS 1DS. Nikon lent Nikon D1x, D100 and one of the newest - Nikon D2HChris Watts also tested Sigma and Kodak cameras. Initial tests were conducted on Framestore-cfc и Moving picture company in London .

'We shot the same scene with each camera, digitized footage using dcRAW (an open source program that accesses the raw raw RAW files), compressed everything to 2K quality, color-coded the timestamp for sequence mapping in Baselight, and then everything was transferred to tape ', said Chris Watts... “Basically, everything looked great until the tape version came out, after which everyone walked around and cheered loudly at the projectionist! This is a trick! '. When viewed with a projector, the images from the digital camera looked amazing.

'We initially chose Nikon D2H... The reason for this was the wireless transfer of files to FTP, the size of the sensor and the fact that we already had Nikon's glasses (lenses) for $ 90,000 ', I noticed Chris Watts. However, while playing back pictures in a row, in the form of a movie, random noise in the form of pixelation was visible in dark areas of the image. This pixelation effect was noticeable only during frame-by-frame shooting and playback, when creating a movie, the situation for which Nikon D2H was not intended.

Camera Canon EOS-1D Mark IIwhich used a CMOS sensor and DIGIC II processorwas one of the most expensive models to test, but the image quality was amazing, according to Chris Watts... I also found a way to attach Nikon lenses to Canon EOS cameras - using the NEOS adapter, but focus and aperture were manually set, which is normal for frame-by-frame movie production.

Also, some of the central control centers had a video output, in fact, not one central control center showed a video until the shutter was released. The priority was to create a movable crane so that the animators could see what they were doing. Pete Kozachik, Wats and Chief Motion Control Specialist Andy Bowman designed a rig in which a small video camera was mounted on the back of a digital camera. The camcorder has been moved slightly to the side for easy focusing.

For production, 24 Canon cameras were purchased. According to the original plan for movie-shooting places with specific lighting, it was necessary to have workstations for each of 24 locations, but the cost of such a set was too high. Seven lighting teams took turns sharing one station on a mobile cart. Each cart included Macintosh, Photoshop, and JavaScript, AppleScript, and QuickTime tools to enable the team to view their work during the shooting process.

Canon could shoot 4K, but the image was compressed and processed only up to 2K (2048 x 1365) because it was such a resolution that was required for the final production on Arri Laser.

Full-length tape can be easily find online. While watching, it is advisable to enable HD-quality:

So the video was first shot on the camera, even before the appearance of the video recording function as such. Much later, another camera, with the ability to record video, once again turned the film industry upside down. It was Canon EOS 5D Mark II.

  • Jury

spend so much effort, time and money to remove such crap

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Contemporary art in action.

    • Lynx

Well, to each his own, I think.
someone understands Burton, someone needs "Captain America"

      • Jury

under this formulation, any schizophrenia can be passed off as art

        • Lynx

          only for amateur.
The simplest test for an art critic is to distinguish children's scribbles and / or the work of the mentally ill from a talented abstractionist or chromatism.

          • Borgert

            And he will distinguish? ;)

            • Lynx

You can find an art critic and check.

            • Arkady Shapoval

A true pro, an artist knows that details are important. The details immediately show who is who and what is what. Likewise here, some people look at skeletons and say "fu". Those who have been able to look at the details between the skeletons may actually see something else worthy of attention.

          • Jury

it's not about children's scribbles - no one questions the professionalism of the creators, but the result is clearly not suitable for everyone. By the way, the creativity of the mentally ill is also there, but it has different vectors - from the masterpieces of Van Gogh to the monsters of Bosch

            • Lynx

The fact that a certain art “does not suit” someone is someone’s problem, not art.
The judgment of Wangog and Bosch as mentally ill is extremely limited and incorrect.

              • Jury

Lynx, reasoning “The fact that a certain art“ does not suit ”someone is someone’s problem, not art” - this is demagoguery, and Van Gogh himself admitted that he was ill, this was the reason for his parting with life.

            • Lynx

Judging Wangog by a cheap, twisted movie is not the best way.

              • Jury

maybe some kind of cheap film has contributed to my judgment, but in general, I judge it by his work, from some of them I get aesthetic pleasure every day at home :)

              • Valery A.

I know that they will beat, but I will tell the truth: 1. Van Gogh was mentally ill, which is clearly evidenced by his treatment in the clinic for the mentally ill Saint-Paul - soon after cutting and shortly before suicide; 2. I am sure that many 5-year-old artists will paint as well.

              • Oleg

Well, Mike Tyson bit off the same ear. Although not treated in a clinic for the mentally ill. So the question is still controversial. Okay, close the psychiatry shop

              • Lynx

                come on.
couch art connoisseurs in the comments - it would be funny if it weren't so dull.
Especially considering that the vancog did not cut off the ear, but damaged the lobe, and not by himself, but in a brawl.
In Saint Paul he was with a nervous breakdown, which, according to modern “everyday concepts”, would sound like “cut at work,” and left there completely cured of it, he had no personality disorders.
Well, before the heap - there was no suicide either, but there was an accident.
But the townspeople are not interested in the reality of a torn earlobe and an accident, they need razors, bloodsuckers, and Anna Karenina, you can also with a dissection.

              • Valery A.

And it seems to me sad to deny the common knowledge. Bibliographers, based on the police protocols of that time, write about an ear wrapped in a scarf and presented to a prostitute, and you are embarrassed about a torn lobe ...

              • Lynx

                ahahahaha….
especially about police protocols written from the words of Gauguin.

  • Dmitriy

This is not the first picture shot at the Central Exhibition Hall ..

    • Arkady Shapoval

It would be interesting what else was filmed at the Central Control Commission to Burton.

  • Eugene o

An article about how Kenon made Nikon. Again.

    • Arkady Shapoval

But what is filmed? On Canon, did you shoot the camera? Or on Nikon, did you shoot the lens?

      • anonym

about the black squares of pixels it is not clear why so

        • Arkady Shapoval

Yes, in the previous review in the comments they wrote that noise is visible even at ISO 200 (and the camera has no lower values). For the production of the film, they needed to ensure that the frame from the frame does not differ in random (random) noise.

Considering that d2 had only 4 MP (video in 2K format), the downsize noise was not suppressed. Canon EOS-1D Mark II has a physically larger matrix (APS-H VS APS-C) and there are 2 times more pixels, which when downsized to 2K, of course, gave a cleaner picture.

          • anonym

            clear. Thanks, Arkady!

  • Alexander

How can you show such garbage to children ... ..? There are so many disadvantaged and hungry children in the world, and they spend money on some kind of garbage that is absolutely useless to anyone… .. It would be better if they helped orphans and homeless people…. Krahobors ... ..

    • Lynx

Krohobor - "a man picking up crumbs", a curmudgeon on trifles, a synonym for "rogue".
Before you literally and pathos throw words at least find out their meaning.
Have you yourself donated to an orphanage for the last time or went to work as a volunteer in pediatric oncology?

      • Arkady Shapoval

The transition to the individual. Ban.

      • Lynx

        deuce you in this quarter.

“Who are the little bums? These are very petty people who, having the means of subsistence, are engaged in hoarding in a hoard. The little man is content with very little, denying himself everything, having in his mind only a thirst for hoarding, they are stingy to the point of impossibility. , whether it be crumbs of bread, whether it be money, etc.
The mind of the little man is loaded with trivial questions, he is very greedy even in the process of a personal relationship to himself and his personality. The little man is meticulously concerned with trifles, missing the main and vital. Krokhobor “will die” if he misses somewhere, even the smallest benefit, and this gives him great suffering. ”(C)

        • Arkady Shapoval

Offtopic. For the continuation of all banned. :)

    • Arkady Shapoval

In the minds of many, an animated film must be for children. But this is not so. Unfortunately, such statements that I observe in this topic very clearly show the general level of education, culture and taste.

      • Lynx

Photographers. What to expect from them.
Moreover, most of the typical "Alex".

    • Ivan

Count your money, please, but do not get into the pocket of other people.
The beauty of art is freedom.
Great movie. And to me personally, it is even more beautiful and pleasant thanks to your anger and misunderstanding.

    • anonym

It's a shame to read this.
Have you ever seen the movie itself, or judge only by its name (or the devil knows what else)?
Burton's saber work is one of the best animations I've seen, and I've seen a lot. Touching, romantic, not banal, exciting, with a special indescribable atmosphere; and just an amazing picture, many who are not in the subject are generally sure that this was done using the CGI method. And in fact - the colossal work of hundreds of people over the course of several years.
It is strange that creative people (after all, we are at the photo forum, don’t we?) Do not see and do not understand all this.

Yes, not for children at all, of course, but from the age of 12 it is quite possible (and necessary) to watch.
And certainly better than fresh Disney stuff, which cannot do without “humor” deep below the belt.

      • anonym

I don’t know what CGI is, but I agree with the rest

        • from the first Anonymous

          CGI - Computer Generated Image

      • Arkady Shapoval

When I looked many years ago, I was even sure that it was a CGI with a bevel under the doll animation. I was amazed when I found out that these were dolls and sets of individual frames.

  • anonym

they would not use Nikonov’s glasses, but foolishly bought them for $ 90.000

    • Arkady Shapoval

      They rented them.

    • Alexander

      It is an objective choice;)

  • Alex

Yes, the film is certainly moronic, but it’s interesting to look at the filming of this pornography, as well as the filming of any movie (to me personally)

  • anonym

There is an inaccuracy in the translation, it says that they rented Nikon lenses for 90, and in the original they already had them, and, apparently, a long time ago from the previous shootings.
This changes the meaning, otherwise it is not obvious why they did not surrender Nikon and did not buy / rent Kenonovskoye, but bought adapters.

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Fixed

  • Oleg

Damn, intrigued by the cartoon. Need to see

  • Eugene

An excellent cartoon, I never considered it childish. The creators have done a great job - from creating dolls and shooting to bringing everything to the final result.

    • zengarden

I completely agree. Cartoon is gorgeous. The story of its creation is interesting.

  • anonym

I read the headline on the newsletter and thought it would go
about skin tone when shooting brides! Ahh !!! Corpse bride! On Nikon ...
And on Canon as a living!

  • Pastor

I can imagine how difficult it was to do it all ... How much hard work. When I watched the cartoon I did not know about it. Now I wanted to reconsider.
And it's cool when they make clips from photos. It looks unusual. I remember a clip from Tori Amos, and there’s still one.

  • Oleg

In general, of course, it is better to shoot the "carrion" on Nikon, but it did not work out badly on Canon. It's just that a valid skintone came out. Humor. The cartoon touched, the creators are great, thanks to Arkady

    • Alexander

      What nonsense?

  • Sergey Obskura

Cartoons were shot on a digital camera long before this picture.

    • Arkady Shapoval

For a long time - in no way, since the classic CZK appeared on their own in early 2000.
      Nikon D1 - June 1999.
Canon D30 (not to be confused with 30D) - May 2000.
      Canon EOS-1D Mark II - February 2004.
But still, if filmed, it would be to find out more accurate information, who, when and what was filmed.

  • Sergey Obskura

    Chaun the sheep.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Sean Lamb 2007, The Corpse of the Bride 2005.

  • Igor

You need to take into account time and technology, then it was cool, and then all the same, don’t say that the programmers worked more on color rendering rather than marketing noise reduction, which the masters of noise reduction from Nikon have not played enough, namely, artificially bullied non-working people of 3 million . with odd ISO on D5

    • Andrei

mmm apparently d5 with artificial iso is just very expensive for you)
technologies go on and everything requires changes and increasing parameters ... maybe you are still retouching pictures for 1 stump today? the working iso was raised, and the camera was like a reportage ... that's what we will equate with such

and the cartoon is interesting, you need to look

      • Oleg

If it’s not too expensive for you to file a review

  • Ilyas

    A very decent cartoon

  • Ishtar

The cartoon is gorgeous shot, very stylish and high quality. Thanks for the review!
