In short

The NIKON NIKKOR-H Auto 1: 3.5 f = 28mm is an old wide-angle lens for Nikon film cameras. In our time, it is interesting only for a very high-quality case and a low price. At one time it was a wonderful fix, but now F / 3.5 is considered too low for such a fix.

Earlier versions of this lens under the name 'Nippon Kogaku Japan 1: 3.5 f = 2.8 cm'went on sale in March 1960. The review lens was released between 1971 and 1973 and is well preserved.

Optical design NIKON NIKKOR-H Auto 1: 3.5 f = 28

Previous and subsequent lens versions use a similar optical design.

Lens hood Metal hood Nikon HN-2 28 / 3.5, screwed into the thread of the front filter
Period The lens from the review was released between 1971-1973. Similar lenses have been produced since 1960. In July 1973, they were replaced by the NIKON NIKKOR-HC Auto 1: 3.5 f = 28mm version (with improved coating)
Manufacturer country LENS MADE IN JAPAN (Lens made in Japan, the inscription on the focus ring on the back of the focus distance marking)

The peak evolution of 28 mm lenses was Nikon 28 / 1.4D, which is almost 3 stops lighter than the hero from this review.

Important: despite the fact that this is Nikon NON AI (PRE AI) lens, for some reason it is easy to install any modern Nikon cameras. You will find how to use manual lenses on modern Nikon central control centers in the 'How to work with non-CPU lenses on modern Nikon central controllers'. While working with the lens, I used this trick for correct exposure metering.

The focus ring is metal and rotates 180 degrees. The progress of the focus ring, on the copy from the review, is quite smooth. During focusing, the frame rim lengthens slightly, but the front lens does not rotate.

Image quality and sample photos

This is one of the first Nikon wide angle SLR lenses. In 1959, Nikon introduced its first Nikon F SLR camera with the Nikon F mount. Under the company's new SLR system, it was necessary to expand the fleet of new SLR lenses. Nikon already had an excellent rangefinder Nippon Kogaku Japan W-Nikkor.C 1: 3.5 f = 2.8 cm, developed in 1952, but under the SLR cameras had to radically redo the lens using a retro-focus optical scheme.

During the design of this lens, the main task was to get rid of a coma, which the engineers quite succeeded. Years passed, and this NIKON NIKKOR-H Auto 1: 3.5 f = 28mm works as expected, with good sharpness in the center of the frame on the open aperture. If you close the aperture to F / 8-11, the lens shows a very good indicator in terms of sharpness. Due to the slight curvature of the field, the angles and edges of the image are not as good as the central part.

Distortion is well compensated, but vignetting on F / 3.5 makes itself felt. Vignetting is very much worse when using filters. With the Green.L CPL 52mm polarizing filter, vignetting is just awful. The lens does not tolerate backlight, it creates multi-colored flares-pentahedrons from bright light sources. In the next version of this lens, enlightenment has been improved.

5-petal aperture with straight petals easily creates 10-ray stars (example) The lens is chromatic.

Due to the lack of a CRC system, the minimum focusing distance is already 60 cm, which is so much for a 28 mm focal length.

To be objective, then modern universal zoom lenses can be no worse than this old man in image quality.

    Pleasant reporter.

  • Rodion

Manuals 28 / 3.5 - generally indistinct glass. Now any zoom will be no worse (apart from distortion) than the old and not very bright fixes.
    Vivitar 28 / 1.9 seems to have been - that's funny)

  • Evgeny_d60

They are children of their time. 28mm then it was very cool. I remember very well the wow effect when a photo-teacher replaced a fifty dollars wide and suggested we look at her Zenith

  • pokemon

"The pinnacle of evolution for 28mm lenses was the Nikon 28 / 1.4D, which is almost 3 stops lighter than the hero from this review."
They seem to have about 7 thousand pieces released.
The price tag of the hucksters for them is hellish - about 3 thousand $$$. In any case, this is exactly what they asked for last spring. At a flea market photo.ru saw for 160.000 (one hundred sixty thousand) Russian rubles in March last year.

  • anonym

“Due to the lack of a CRC system, the minimum focusing distance is as much as 60 cm, which is a lot for a 28 mm focal length.” - IMHO, this is a feature of a particular lens.
For example, my inexpensive Konica Hexanon AR 28 mm f / 3.5 of about the same years of production - MDF 30 centimeters, my former more expensive Konica UC Hexanon AR 28 mm f / 1.8 with CRC - MDF is already 18 centimeters ...

    • Arkady Shapoval

The developer of this lens said that if you make a smaller MDF, then the quality will deteriorate greatly, because he did not allow himself to make smaller MDF. Later invented CRC and everything worked out.

  • Tofik

I have a relative of 35mm / 2 of the same series. Chic shirik. Recently shot. Norm At 2 sharpness and no vignette.

  • Victor

MDF - 60 cm? I do not consider this a disadvantage, because Shooting anything with a wide-angle from such distances, you still get, for obvious reasons, BYAKU ... for macro photography, you still need to use MACRO optics, or, at worst, a staff ...

    • Arkady Shapoval

Small MDF is not a macro. With a wide angle and small MDF, you can play well with perspective (such)

  • KalekseyG

“Despite the fact that it is Nikon NON-AI (PRE-AI)
lens, for some reason it is easy to install any
modern Nikon cameras ”- it looks like my NIKON NIKKOR-H
Auto 1: 2.8 f = 24mm will also rise, the skirt of the iris control ring is short (barely closes the buttocks)

    • KalekseyG

No. Does not get up, tried on the D200.

  • Basil

And you try it on the backlight, I think it’s better not even Nikon. It was about 30 years ago, but to speak for aperture ratio is wide (this is a fashion, it will pass) Who will buy 1.4 expensive? Marketing
