In short

Tokina AT-X AF 100-300mm 1: 4 Internal Focus (official name Tokina AT-X 340 AF-II, short for Tokina AF 100-300 / 4) is a good lens. Super high quality build, constant 1: 4 aperture ratio and nice picture. At 300 mm and f / 4, sharpness is limping, but in the range of 100-200 mm, all chiki-bunches. Without a twinge of conscience, I would call this lens 'Tokina AT-X PRO' (instead of the actual 'Tokina AT-X').

History

Tokina AF 100-300 / 4 is the result of a reworking of an older manual lens Tokina AT-X SD 100-300mm 1: 4.

Exist two versions Tokina AF 100-300 / 4 (the official name Tokina AT-X 340 hints at this AF-II). The first version of the Tokina AT-X 340 AF differs from the AF-II in a glossy-glossy coating of the case and a red border near the front lens (there may be other functional differences).

Important: the Tokina AT-X 340 AF-II version for Canon cameras is outwardly different from the versions for Nikon and Minolta. The Tokina AT-X 340 AF-II version for Canon cameras has a body design with the focus ring shifted towards the front lens (due to the addition of a focus mode switch).

Tokina AT-X AF 100-300mm 1: 4 Internal Focus (N / AIS, Tokina AT-X 340 AF-II)

Assembly

The lens assembly is beyond praise. The lens body and lens hood are coated with a special, rough, pleasant and stylish material. Focus and zoom rings use hard rubber, which is unlikely to ever stretch from frequent use (which cannot be said about the gum on many original Nikon lenses). To the touch, the lens is very similar to Tokina AT-X PRO 80-200mm 1: 2.8. Comes in a stylish case with leatherette and velor trim (view view).

Of course, the Tokina AF 100-300 / 4 uses a metal mount. The lens weighs more than one and a half kilograms. For convenient work with the lens on its body is located tripod foot. The foot can rotate freely 360 degrees and is fixed with the clamping screw in any position. There are three white marks for quick installation of the lens and camera in a strict vertical or horizontal position. During rotation of the tripod foot clamp, it clicks in fixed positions and allows you to find the correct orientation by touch or by ear (a nice little thing that I first met in this particular lens). Unfortunately, the tripod foot cannot be removed from the lens.

When changing the focal length front and rear lenses are fixed. Unfortunately, the lens may change spontaneously the focal length under the weight of its own lenses, however, the change is very small (the disease can progress with age).

Tokina AF 100-300 / 4 may use metal hood. The hood can be installed in the opposite direction for transportation. The hood is of a threaded type and must be screwed into the thread of the front filter. It is a pity, but when using the lens hood (transport mode or direct use) you can not install the lens cap.

The front lens of the lens is very close to the front edge of the frame, you need to be careful so as not to damage or stain it.

Tokina AF 100-300 / 4

Tokina AF 100-300 / 4

Focusing

Tokina AF 100-300 / 4 focuses slowly. I would not risk taking this lens for dynamic scenes. The auto focus speed is independent of the selected focal length.

The manual focus ring is wide enough, pleasant to the touch, and rotates 135 degrees. Friction of internal mechanisms is audible during manual focusing. The zoom ring travel is smoother and quieter. On the lens barrel there is an inscription 'Internal Focus' in large letters, which indicates that the focusing of the Tokina AF 100-300 / 4 internal - when focusing, the front and rear lenses remain motionless.

The minimum distance is 2 meters over the entire range of focal lengths. The maximum magnification ratio is achieved by 300 mm, and is 1: 5.6 (weak pseudo-macro). For a telephoto lens, a large MDF (minimum focus distance) is not a problem. Tokina AF 100-300 / 4 has window with a scale of focusing distances in meters and feet, as well as tags for working in the infrared spectrum for 100 and 300 mm.

It's important: auto focus with this lens is available only when using him on cameras with built-in motor focusing.

Exact list Nikon DSLR cameras with a built-in focus motor, on which this lens will focus automatically:

Exact list Nikon DSLR cameras without a built-in focus motor, on which this lens will not focus automatically:

Only auto focus and sound confirmation of focus will not work with these cameras, all other important functions, such as automatic exposure metering and automatic iris control, will work well.

You will find a lot of useful information on the types of cameras and lenses Nikon here.

On cameras Nikon D700 и Nikon D70 the lens focused accurately and rarely re-focused. Even at 300 mm focal length, the lens behaves well. Focusing accuracy is independent of focusing distance. In Live View, focus becomes indecently slow.

Feature 1: lens version for Nikon cameras does not have a focus mode switch. To translate the lens into manual focus on cameras with motor For focusing, use the focus mode switching lever located near the camera mount. For cameras without motor Only manual focus mode will always be available for focusing. It is not clear why there is such a switch for Canon cameras, but not for Nikon and Minolta / Sony.

Feature 2: lens not parfocal - focus is lost when the focal length is changed

Feature 3: there is the effect of 'Focus Breathing' (changes in viewing angle during focusing)

Feature 4: Tokina AF 100-300 / 4 transmits the focus distance to the subject in the camera and is similar to Nikon D-type lenses.

Feature 5: during focusing, the lens and camera are very noisy

Feature 6: During focusing, the focus ring rotates and must not be touched

Feature 7: when using the 2X teleconverter, you can get a set of focal lengths of 200-600 mm at F / 8. Theoretically, Nikon cameras can work with such a set, in which focus sensors are designed to work with a maximum aperture of F / 8, they can be found here. I don’t have exact data about the work of Tokina AF 100-300 / 4 with teleconverters.

Feature 8: When the extreme focusing positions are reached, the strokes of the focusing mechanism are heard (massive lenses knock against the extreme positions). Do not worry, this is a common occurrence for massive screwdriver lenses.

Feature 9: the lens has a manual aperture ring. To be able to control the value aperture from camera or for automatic installation aperture on modern central control valves, you need to turn the control ring to the F / 32 value, and fix it with the locking lever with a green mark, which is located to the right of the marks aperture. The F / 32 value and the latch mark are highlighted in green to match them. If this is not done, then on a number of cameras, the display will display an error - 'fEE' (ring is not installed aperture) Some cameras having diaphragm rheostatallow you to control the aperture using the ring aperturebut only in metering modes exposure 'M' and 'A'. You can read more about this issue in the section on Non-G Lenses. Ring aperture rotates with clicks, the values F / 4, 5.6, 8, 11, 16, 22, 22, 32 are plotted on it; set an intermediate value between pairs of numbers using the ring aperture impossible. Intermediate values can only be set using the camera menu

Tokina AF 100-300 / 4

Tokina AF 100-300 / 4

Image quality

In general, the lens is not bad.

The main advantages are low distortion, confident sharpness in the center of the frame at F / 4 in the range of 100-200 mm, pleasant bokeh. In the range of 200-300 mm, the sharpness decreases smoothly. Surprisingly, even at 300 mm, the lens shows satisfactory image quality, much better than the old televisions of the 70-300 / 4-5.6 class at its long end. If you cover the aperture 300 mm to F / 5.6, the sharpness increases markedly. Also, it was pleasantly surprised that the edges and corners of the image are not as far behind in sharpness from the central region of the image as one might expect.

In the range of 100-200 mm chromatic aberration well fixed in the center of the frame. The edges of the frame in this range are slightly worse. 300 mm chromatic aberration make themselves felt much stronger. In the range of 200-300 mm, the contrast drops in the lens.

Without a hood, Tokina AF 100-300 / 4 is very afraid of side light (example), most likely due to the front lens close to the edge of the lens. With a hood, resistance to side light increases significantly. In backlight, the lens can catch a large number of glare.

My experience

Super assembly of the lens makes you trust him.

After a week of working with Tokina AF 100-300 / 4, I still have a lot of positive emotions. I would use such a lens for portrait photography, I really love the telephoto range for this purpose. I would prefer the Tokina AF 100-300 / 4 to any darker 70-300 / 4-5.6 grade lens. And I would even prefer the given Tokin instead of my beloved Nikon AF Nikkor 70-210mm 1: 4. It’s a pity, Tokina AF 100-300 / 4 is not as good at 300 mm as the original fix Nikon ED AF Nikkor 300mm 1: 4.

300mm and f / 4 focal lengths do the trick - they create very nice bokeh, a squeezed perspective and the ability to shoot some scenes at a comfortable distance. I often remember the time when I loved to shoot with Jupiter-37 135 / 3.5 and Jupiter-11 135/4. With the Tokina AF 100-300 / 4 at 135mm, I got a similar picture and, at the same time, autofocus.

The range of 100-300 mm was very convenient. It seems that you are shooting on a 70-300 lens, but at the same time you have an extra stop of aperture in stock. After the internal zoom of Tokina AF 100-300 / 4, the lengthening trunk of 70-300 telephones begins to seem like some kind of wildness.

At 300 mm focal length I was lucky take off even at shutter speeds of 1/80 second. It is not clear why this lens does not have updates.

If you look for original autofocus lenses with the ability to use 300/4, then among Nikon you can find only expensive mono-edged Nikon AF-S Nikkor 200-400mm 1: 4G VR ED и Nikon AF-S Nikkor 200-400mm 1: 4GII ED VR N Nano Crystal Coat.

The Tokina AT-X AF 100-300mm 1: 4 Internal Focus (N / AIS, Tokina AT-X 340 AF-II) is a good lens of a bygone era with the rare '100-300 / 4' parameters. Due to the high-quality Japanese assembly, it will be able to serve for more than a dozen years. The range of 100-300mm with constant f / 4 proved to be very convenient. The image quality is not bad, the ability to shoot at 300mm and f / 4 is a kind of trump card of the Tokina AT-X 340 AF-II. Given its low cost, the Tokina AT-X 340 AF-II is the lens to consider buying.

So think it better this modelka or 80-200 2.8 mk1-2 the price is the same on the secondary, although different weight categories, but a picture on 300f4 might be more interesting than 200 2.8

    • Arkady Shapoval

200 2.8 the picture will be more interesting. If we take people for shooting, then definitely μ2. MK2 will provide a wider angle and a full stop of aperture will not bother anyone. Compared to 100-300, only the 300/4 option will disappear. And the 80-200 is a professional lens, compared to the AT-X series of Tokin.

        Thanks Arkady)

Thanks so much for the article! As always, everything is clear, meaningful and even, I’m not afraid of the word, fascinating)

All the same, there is magic, any competitor takes similar optics from third-party manufacturers, disassembles it and looks at what a "thief" has invented, under a microscope and so and so and the EU. but. trying to repeat or do better. I am not a professional photographer, with a knack for the IT world, the same trick with Cisco switches and everyone else, it seems, they copied to the byte and micron, and all the commands are the same, but the fault tolerance is different.

Here and in the review a good product, but comparing with Nikon's analogues is not very correct. Nikon will be more stable, mind you don’t shine, but more stable. And for the pros, a stable result is a guarantee of his result and success in his business.

At one time, I chose between 24-70 2.8 Nikkor and 24-70 2.8 Tamron. Tamron was very good, but taking pictures of him for an hour, there were more misses than with his native Nikkor. Native lenses are the bar, you always have to level it.

The native manufacturer will always have an advantage, it has all the codes and algorithms, this will always provide 100% performance and compatibility.
Although Nikon can learn how to build quality from tokins, all lenses are made for centuries, the same 24-70 from Nikon after a year of use begins to wedge when zoomed.

  • Rodion

By the way, is it optically different from the manual version?

    • Arkady Shapoval

The scheme is most likely different. In the manual version, the front lens rotated and exited during focusing. In the AF version, the focus is internal, without rotation.

Picture class! I once bought Tokinu 100-300 5.6-6.7 for a penny (developed by Kosina, if I'm not mistaken) with mold. I took pictures for two days. Didn't expect anything good, but the picture was very juicy. On the third day, he slipped on a pebble on a mountain stream, fell a slug and broke his bayonet-mount legs right in the cell…. Now I think how to put an aluminum adapter in its place.

  • Bolek

Thanks for the review, Arkady! Sigma has a similar telephoto lens - the Sigma AF 100-300mm f / 4 EX DG HSM APO with very attractive parameters. If you can, write a review for him too, he deserves it.

Hello. Can you tell me about Tokina lenses with a built-in focus motor? I look at all the models, from wide-angle to tele-range - all with focus through a screwdriver .. and I have a D5200. Usually, each company has its own focusing marking, but here something in the name about this information is zero, each model has to be struck and upset. I would be grateful for your answer.

There are many of them, do you want someone to prepare a list of them instead of you?

    Good review! As always! Thanks!
I have a Tokina 300 F4. I'm happy with it! The quality is very decent. And then I came across a lens from this review for sale ... And now I'm thinking of buying it! The difference in price between Nikon and Tokina is painfully large ...

  • Valery

Great site with good glass reviews.
Arkady, tell me a decent 300 mm lens. Despite the fact that there is Tokina 80-200 2.8 and I really like it. I'm thinking about Tokin 300/4, but maybe there are other decent ones - let it be fixes, let it be manual 300 mm, which can confidently shoot at f4-5,6.
I really have not Nikon, but 5D II, but I think this is not so important.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Tokina 300/4, Nikon 300/4 are very decent

Selling RMC Tokina lens 100-300 mm 1: 5.6, new, without caps and case, sold separately

  • Alexey

The question is a little off topic. I have Tokin 300/4. AF works very poorly regardless of the camera. It is guided in several passes, that is, you press the focusing button several times and only then is it guided. What could this be? Kind of like manuals - the grease on the autofocus mechanics thickened?

Is it possible to somehow compare this lens with the Nikkor AF 70-210mm 1: 4 lens?

    • B. R. P.

      You can, it's not prohibited.

        Which one should be preferred?

Hello. Tell me how to understand “the maximum magnification ratio is achieved at 300 mm focal length and is 1: 5.6.”
How does it compare, for example, with “Nikon ED AF Nikkor 300mm 1:4” where “maximum magnification ratio is 1:7.1”. And what does it affect? Thank you!
