Characteristics Tair-41

Optical design: 4 elements in 3 groups (Tair, see); * The error is obvious in the diagram - the rear segment of the lens is never 50 mm, but about 25 at all.
Field of view angle (16 mm film): 15 degrees;
Diaphragm design: multi-petal, blackened, non-preset, without ratchet;
Mounting to the camera: M32 * 0.5, working length 31 mm;
MDF: 0.7 m.
Native format: 16 mm film, covers the frame up to APS-C.

Design and adaptation features

Tair-41 50/2 - this is not an ordinary fifty dollars! This is not even the equivalent of an 85mm lens, like the Zenitar 50 / 1.2 for APS-C. This is a real TV set, only for 16 mm movie cameras, with an angle of 15 degrees. All the other features of the lens follow from this.

Tair-41, like most movie lenses, can not be installed on SLR cameras - there will not be enough rear segment. Therefore, it was decided to adapt it to the M39 thread for mirrorless cameras.

Tair-41 already has everything you need to use: a focuser, a lens unit with a beautiful aperture:

This lens only needs to replace the shank with a more common one.
To do this, everything that is behind is cut out at the lens, only parts of the helicoid can be spared. It is necessary to remove the rear lens aperture of the lens. The hood in the front can, as it turned out, not be removed.
Further to the remnants of the helicoid, a part with an M39 thread from I-26M / I-61 is simply attached - ready!

As a result of alteration, the stroke of the helicoid is increased (stoppers removed), providing an MDF of about 40 cm.
The construct of Tair-41 is convenient enough for adaptation, of the additional parts you only need the right shank.

When I ordered this infrequent lens, I, of course, assumed that it would behave unpredictably, but so ...

Only MFT covers the lens more or less qualitatively, APS-C covers with a vignette and, most importantly, with invincible distortions at the edges of the frame. In fact, on the APS-C, only the central part is more or less sharp.

The lens has low sharpness at F / 2 due to software, at F / 2.8 the lens becomes noticeably sharper and more pleasant, at F / 4 you can see quite decent sharpness in the center. On F / 8-F / 11, the lens is very sharp ~ within the MFT frame.

On SLR cameras it works only in macro mode, as a macro lens is quite interesting for its design. Aperture required:

They are even interested in shooting in the F / 2.8-F / 8 aperture range even on the CZC - the lens has its own character:

On mirrorless cameras Tair-41 can be used fully. This reveals more features of the lens.
For example, it turned out that Tair-41 significantly distorts (pillow) on the APS-C. In fact, in the scheme there are no parameters correcting distortion (according to Volosov).

As already mentioned, Tair-41 has very bad edges even with closed diaphragms:

It’s just better not to talk about the edges openly - they are not on the APS-C.

In general, the diaphragm saves if you need sharpness at least in the center. Aperture to F / 2.8, you can get a more or less acceptable sharpness / picture ratio.

Due to the work "at the limit of possibilities" on the APS-C, artifacts such as tailed lemons in the bokeh and just tails appear. It does not look aesthetically pleasing, therefore it is better to crop the frame to crop 2 (MFT). Although it is possible to pass it off as a feature, as monoclay lovers do.

Occasionally, chromatism can be seen in the pictures. But coma, astigmatism and spherical aberrations are more affected.

Tair-41 is not very resistant to backlight - contrast is lost, sometimes bright lens flare appears.

In general, the picture on the lens is often quite good and interesting, especially at F / 2.8. But the fact is obvious that on APS-C this lens makes little sense to apply.

Conclusions

Tair-41 is an unusual lens that has “tasty” characteristics for its design. Unfortunately, the lens is not intended for a frame larger than the frame of the Micro Four Thirds system (but in fact, than 16 mm Super), on APS-C its use is limited by strong distortions at the edge of the frame. The lens can be recommended as a "spectacular" (software, strong torsion, "monoklevo" along the edge - in this he excels) and portrait for mirrorless cameras.
I liked the lens precisely because of its unusualness in all respects, I will leave it to myself until better times.

It would be nice to look at ff for how terrible the vignette would be. Well, immediately Helios 40 is remembered with sharpness only in the center and torsion :)

        I got it without aperture blades and not a single screw.
        I twisted everything from it, the rear lens is not covered by anything. Here is this element, because of which the rear lens seems to be at the bottom of the well, and limits the field within reasonable limits. I inserted it into the body of the camera with a 6x9 cassette, shot it on paper. Covers even at infinity. There is a drop in lighting towards the edges. And of course, there should be nothing “valuable” outside the full frame.
        And as it is, I used it on Nikon 1. super.

      It really wasn’t really a movie to shoot, apparently. But it is worth noting that the frame area of ​​16 mm is much smaller than that of the APS-C, i.e. only the more or less sharp center of the frame works.

Therefore, on a test for the camera BMPCC acquired the entire set of lenses from Kiev 16u. The picture is wonderful, especially Tahir 41. The only problem with my kit is that the lenses are greasy and focusing requires too much effort. I wanted to ask if you know how to lubricate Tair 41 (well, at the same time Vega 7 and World 11)? How dangerous is this for alignment? I would be very grateful for the advice or disassembly scheme!

      You can disassemble them, however, I do not remember how. It seems to be done from the “tail” of the lens. It has a single lens unit housing with an internal part of the helicoid and diaphragm.
      Therefore, it is necessary to remove the tail, remove the stoppers and completely unscrew the “nut” of the helicoid, which is then cleaned and lubricated. The main thing is to remember the start of the thread, otherwise it is not a fact that you will correctly assemble it the first time.
      This operation will not harm the optics - the lens unit is reliably protected and cannot be disassembled along the way.

          I don't recommend bothering with Vega-7 - a disgustingly unsuccessful lens. One cannot even compare with Tair-41. Tair-41 is generally unique and cannot be confused with anything in character. On the micro, I shoot almost only with them. There is a slight vignette on the mic, but not at all critical. The only thing is to install a good hood - it helps a lot in protection against counter.

    I bought it on the occasion of Kyiv-16E with all 3 lenses, made an adapter ring M32 / 0,5xM39 / 1, put it on anaerobic paste in an adapter for Nikon 1. If you need the adapter ring to rest against the inner edge of the adapter, make it 10 long -10,5mm. I did 9,5, and I had an overrun for infinity, so I had to put on an anaerobic sanepasta. But now it is convenient to twist the lenses - the ring remains on the camera. The world does not completely cover the frame, but for the street it’s the most - at infinity (I have it on a comma at 1,5) with an aperture of 4-8, everything is sharp, but even a square does not save - a lot of vignetting, round frames are obtained. Vega is also good for street, close-up, and portraits, but you have to turn the focus ring more often on it, which is not sugar on Nikon 1. I love Taira (11, 11N, 3), but so far I have not used the 41st so often. There is no vignetting in Tair. Important: I didn’t succeed in setting up the adapter so that all 3 lenses were at infinity when set to infinity. I adjusted both to 60cm and to infinity, it still turns out that either Mir and Tair more or less coincide, or all three have to run over. It doesn't really bother me, because. I still don't go by the scale. If you take Tair-41 for the sake of it, then I would recommend taking Vega-9 from Krasnogorsk, because. much sharper, and covers not only micro, but also 1.5 crop. But Vega-9 is more difficult to remake - you need to bore the insides of the large M42 macro ring, and not only the glass, but also on the threaded segment, then make grooves for the Vega-9 “mustache” with a needle file, but the lens is worth it. The drawing is not Tairovsky, but also very, very original. On a mirror crop for macro, it is more convenient than Vega-11U, and the aperture is covered more. In terms of resolution, Vega-11U should be better than Vega-9, but for me this is not critical. Out of all 4 16mm movie camera lenses that I have, I will definitely leave the Vega-9. If unhurried photography and ICM are not for you, then you can not mess with the other three. Especially if you are not used to Tair-11/11N, then you don't need Tair-41 either. I took 41 precisely because I wanted a portrait camera for Nikon 1, similar to the 11th one on a DSLR, but more compact.

    On Ali I found a ring m32×0.5-m42×1 - it should fit. A narrow one will probably have to be planted on an anaerobic paste to the lens. It is easy to convert the M39-N1 adapter into M42-N1 with a segment like that of M39 - we file the gear knurling at the narrow M42 macro ring and insert it into the adapter instead of the M39 liner. It is better not to grind the outer thread of the macro ring right away - it may be necessary to adjust the working length (grinding then little by little you will catch the necessary stop in the wall of the adapter). The price of 660 is cheaper than turning, but there will be more fuss with the setting.
