prehistory

In the beginning there was... Sony. And then I sold it and switched to Canon :). Along with the camera, the glass also went, leaving only Helios 44. Since I like to play around with objects, I began searching for glass that is better suited for this task than Helios. Preferably not very expensive. Some time later I purchased a Tamron Adaptall-2 35-70mm F3.5 CF Macro (17A) for 28 bucks + Tamron Adaptall-EOS adapter for 14 bucks.

History

Tamron Adaptall-2 35-70mm F3.5 CF Macro (17A) – zoom lens for 35 mm SLR cameras. Since Tamron does not make its own cameras, the lens, thanks to the Tamron Adaptall-2 system of interchangeable shanks, can be installed wherever your heart desires. Fortunately, the working distance of 50.7 mm allows you to screw it even onto Nikon. For systems from the 70s and 80s, it is possible to find original adapters, but for newer systems there are a huge number of Chinese adapters. It is possible to use adapter bundles, for example Adaptall-M42+M42-necessary system.

Our experimental graduated from 1982 to 1987. Interestingly, there were 3 different modifications and they were all labeled 17A. The first version has a smaller focus ring pattern and reverse focus, like Nikon's. In the second version, the focus direction was changed to normal. In the latest version, purely cosmetic, they only increased the size of the focus ring pattern.
I got the very first version.

The lens lies comfortably in the hand, assembled well, efficiently. Glass, metal and very little plastic. The zoom ring is rubberized, the diaphragm and zoom rings are plastic. The zoom ring consists of two arcs on the sides of the lens. When zooming, the lens lengthens. When focusing lengthens, the front lens rotates. The lens has a wide rubberized focus ring that rotates approximately 330 degrees. The focus ring rotates gently, smoothly, it is a pleasure to use it. Turning from infinity to 0.9 meters takes only about 80 degrees, the rest is close range.

The lens uses a special 'BBAR MC' multi-enlightenment - Broad-Band Anti-Reflection (broadband anti-reflective multi-layer enlightenment). The front lens is cast in blue, lilac, aquamarine, and the rear in lilac. The front lens is also very convex.

Now about MDF. At 30 mm it is 0.9 m, at 40 mm - about 0.45 m, 50 mm - 0.3 m, 70 mm - 0.25 m. CF in the name of the lens it stands for Close focusingthat is, when focusing 30 mm from infinity upon reaching the MDF of 0.9 meters, the focus ring does not stop, but continues to rotate, changing the focal length until it stops at 70 mm and 0.25 m. The lens is capable of capturing macro at a scale of 1: 2,8 to 70 mm.

Now about the problems that I encountered when using on my canon 60d. First, infinity only focuses on a covered diaphragm. Since the working distance is as much as 50.7 mm, then I sin more likely on the Chinese adapter. A new one will come - I’ll check it. Secondly, the same Chinese adapter does not fully clamp the diaphragm pusher, as a result of which it does not close more than F / 8. The pusher is a small wheel that needs to be pressed into the lens. Again, I’ll think about blocking it with a new adapter. If someone suddenly had an unnecessary Adaptall-M42 adapter lying around - I’ll be happy to get it in my raking hands :)

Image quality and examples

Distortion is very well fixed. Data taken from www.adaptall-2.com: Distortion: 35mm: 2.18% (barrel), 70mm: less than 1% (pinclush.)

Since the lens was primarily bought for the subject and there is no infinity, then there will be no test shots on the street with grass and cats. There will be no portraits, since from infinity to 0.9 m we have only 80 degrees and focus is not very convenient to catch.

The color of the lens conveys wonderful, automatic white balance The camera also works without problems. All test shots were taken quickly at work, with one softbox and on the F / 8 aperture, from editing only exposure compensation in Lightroom during conversion. Also reduced size.

Сonclusion

A lens for 28 bucks for a subject? IMHO is very suitable, for the same money it is difficult to find something else. Even the problems mentioned above do not bother me at all.

    Is such a small flu for the subject a deliberate step?

      I wrote that due to problems with the adapter, the aperture only closes until F / 8.
      The adapter that is now, I spoiled a little trying to achieve infinity (in vain I did this, I don't need a lens for infinity). A new one will arrive - I will normally block the pusher and close the diaphragm more. Test shots were taken at 70mm and on MDF, the decorations are small, that's why there is such a small depth of field at F / 8.

      Using it as a staffer is not very convenient, distances up to 0.9 m occupy most of the focus ring stroke.
